12 Most Amazing Ancient Artifacts That Were Way Ahead Of Their Time
Subscribe ► http://goo.gl/WPKt5w One day soon, someone will come up with a viable working model for a flying car. That person won't truly be the originator of the idea of flying cars, though, because the concept of a flying car has existed for as long as the car itself. Similarly, the idea of a mobile phone existed long before anyone was able to make one. Some of the things we think of as modern inventions are actually based on ancient ideas - and some of the historical artifacts you're about to see in this video were whole centuries ahead of their time! As Amazon Air Expands, FedEx And UPS May Suffer
Amazon aims to compete with FedEx and UPS in the logistics and shipping industry. That's what analysts told CNBC after Amazon Air recently expanded to 50 planes and announced it will open a $1.5 billion air hub in Northern Kentucky in 2021. Amazon is handling up to 26% of its own shipping, meaning FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service are losing a portion of Amazon's business. FedEx says it's not worried, but Morgan Stanley reports the major shippers have already lost 2% revenue to Amazon Air. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. What It's Like To Be An Amazon Flex Delivery Driver
Amazon has offered free two-day shipping for Prime members since 2005. As Amazon rolls out a one-day shipping guarantee for its 100 million Prime members, Amazon Flex drivers help solve the company's last mile problem. CNBC spoke to these on-demand contract workers all over the country to find out what it's really like to deliver for Amazon. Watch the video to hear about the pay, pace of work, and how Amazon Flex works. Is Amazon Prime worth it? For many members, free shipping is a key Amazon Prime benefit that factors into their decision to pay $119 per year for the service. As Amazon starts offering Prime members the added benefit of one-day shipping they're working with on-demand contract drivers to help with this especially labor-intensive and expensive hand-delivery. We spent a day with Omar Montes, a Flex driver in the San Francisco Bay Area. Omar helped a friend deliver around 46 packages in 3½ hours, for $105. “These are like the good days that make you want to continue doing Amazon. But, you know, there’s obviously bad days too,” Montes said. » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. 12 Most Incredible Abandoned Vehicles
The car that sits on your driveway or in your garage probably isn't a unique vehicle. You might like it a lot, but that doesn't make it unique! The vehicles we see and use every day, whether they're cars, buses, trains or planes, are mass-produced. That isn't the way every vehicle is made, though. Some of them are one-of-a-kind builds, and once they've served their purpose, they're left abandoned. That's been the fate of every incredible vehicle you're about to see in this video!

How Amazon Delivers On One-Day Shipping
Prime Day, Amazon's biggest shopping event, is here, and now one-day shipping is the norm for tens of millions of items available during Amazon's Prime Day event, which runs from July 15 to July 16. To succeed at this rapid delivery, Amazon spends tens of billions of dollars every year and employs 250,000 workers in its U.S. warehouses. The process is an incredible challenge, and Amazon has faced criticism about working conditions at every step of the process. The Tragedy Of Pantera Shook The Music Word To Its Core
Pantera originated groove metal. Guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, bassist Rex Brown, and singer Phil Anselmo provided a soundtrack for the disaffected, and a loud one at that. This is their tragic real-life story. The members of Pantera were infamous for their hard-partying ways, particularly when they were on the road. Their tour rider was basically a virtual liquor store. Backstage, the band demanded liters of whiskey, vodka, and bourbon, plus several cases of beer and bottles of wine. Their production office required liters of booze and a bottle of French wine. Onstage, they demanded two cases of beer and two liters of whiskey. These were nightly requirements for tours that could run 80 or more nights. Some of the mayhem caused by such copious alcohol consumption was caught on film. Mostly, though, it's the stuff of legend, handed down in stories told by the people who were there and shouldn't be able to remember anything, but somehow do. Rex Brown, for one, has gone sober, telling The Rock Pit, "I quit drinking completely; I don't even think about it, and it's just amazing now." The Biggest Sports Scandals Of The Past Decade
The 2010s provided the sports world with some scandals we'd prefer to forget. Names like Aaron Hernandez and Oscar Pistorius went down in infamy, and they weren't the only ones who made headlines. Here are the biggest sports scandals of the 2010s. Even before the 2010s, experts had raised concerns about brain injuries suffered by professional and amateur football players. Eventually, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, became part of the sports world's active vocabulary. The issue was never as simple as football being a dangerous pursuit. One doesn't need to be a practicing physician to understand that 300-pound men repeatedly ramming their heads into each other isn't great for staying healthy. Nevertheless, the NFL denied the truth as it attempted to hide the concussion crisis hovering over the sport and the number of former players likely suffering from CTE. The league was ultimately forced to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars following a class-action lawsuit filed by ex-players, although such settlements have been less than helpful for many former pros. The NFL has also taken measures to make the game safer, including in-game penalties and post-game fines for players who hit opponents high on their bodies. The league has also hired independent concussion specialists to evaluate players suspected to have suffered head injuries during games. North and South Korea are separated by a thin strip of land serving as a buffer, since the two countries are technically still at war with each other. It's called the Korean Demilitarized Zone, or DMZ. South Korea built a village on its side of the DMZ, meant to show North Koreans how great life could be if they escaped. The residents who live there get major perks, like paying fewer taxes, free farmland, exemption from compulsory military service, an incredible school system, and abnormally large household incomes. North Korea also built a propaganda town, known as "Peace Village," just in case anyone actually wants to defect to the totalitarian regime. Unlike the South Korean version, this village is a complete sham. First and foremost, no one lives there despite North Korea's claim that it houses 200 people. While there are houses, schools, daycare, and a hospital, every building is just a concrete shell. Lights turn on and off, but observers say that they seem to be on an automatic timer. The only human activity is people brought in to sweep the streets and sometimes tend the surrounding fields to keep it looking nice. The Weird Reason UPS Trucks Never Make Left Turns
At first blush, it seems to be what mainstream scientists refer to as "totally made up," but it's true: when at all possible, delivery drivers for the United Parcel Service, better known as UPS, won't make left turns. "But why?" you might ask. And if you did ask, it would be a good question. Is it out of fear? Some leftover superstition from days long passed? A deep respect for folks like Derek Zoolander? Well, prepare to be flabbergasted and get ready to have your mind blown, because it turns out that the reasoning is actually grounded in genuine logic, reason and science. It probably won't surprise you to learn that one of the largest, most financially successful delivery companies on the planet makes a decent amount of its decisions based on what will make them the most money. What might shock you, though, is how much money they're estimated to save simply by telling their drivers not to hang a louie. According to CNN, UPS saves an estimated 10 million gallons of fuel every year just by eliminating left turns. With diesel running, on average, around three dollars per gallon, that's a $30 million annual savings. They also shave miles off of every route, allowing for more packages to be delivered, saving money on man hours and, in the long run, maintenance. The grand total? By their own estimates, they save somewhere in the $300-400 million per year by finding the most efficient delivery routes, routes designed around never making a left turn. Yes, it sounds impossible. But the folks at Mythbusters actually tested the theory that skipping right turns could save on fuel and found that, in a single route, a truck making exclusively right turns used around a third less fuel than one that sat waiting to take a left! So should we all be avoiding left turns in our daily lives in an attempt to see what brown can do for us? Funny you should mention it, but as a matter of fact, yeah, we probably should. See, as it turns out, left turns are kind of the bane of modern traffic, at least in parts of the world where people drive on the right side of the road, and that's about 65 percent of all drivers worldwide, so it's a pretty big deal. Think about your daily commute: turning right is quicker, since you can generally do it at a red light. You're not stuck in the middle of the intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, running your engine pointlessly as the sound of your turn signal ticks away your precious moments on this mortal plane. There's also the matter of safety. In 2014, the Washington Post reported that more than 50 percent of crossing-path collisions involved a left turn, while less than six percent involved hanging a right. More shockingly, over a third of fatal motorcycle accidents were due to an automobile unexpectedly making a left hand turn in front of the biker. Through the use of routing software programmed to eliminate as many left turns from their drivers' daily grinds as possible, UPS minimizes the risk of their employees causing congestion or being involved in potentially deadly accidents. And both of those are even bigger wins than saving a few hundred million dollars. While the idea of nearly eliminating an entire direction of travel from a delivery driver's arsenal might seem novel, it's actually a method that the company has been using for decades. CNN reported that UPS has been utilizing a right-turn-heavy system since the 1970s. Since then, they've developed a routing optimization software program called ORION that, by comparison makes your GPS look like an old timey farmhand giving you directions. ORION, which took more than a decade to develop, takes insane amounts of data that most mapping software wouldn't consider, making thousands of calculations per minute to create the most efficient multi-point route possible. The results? According to UPS, millions of dollars saved, and a reduction of 100,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year, leading to cleaner air for everyone. Strange, but true. #UPS #TruckDrivers

The Truth About MMA Legend Bas Rutten Finally Revealed
Sebastiaan "Bas" Rutten. Fight sports pioneer and innovator. MMA legend. TV show host. Pro wrestler. Actor. Inventor. Terrifying bald man giving you life advice on YouTube. Here are things you might not have known about the amazing Bas Rutten. If you're an MMA fan, you probably know that Bas Rutten has a great record. But it might be strange to discover that his status as a UFC legend is based on very few actual UFC fights. In fact, the vast majority of the fights that made his name were for the Japanese promotion Pancrase. His professional record of 28-4-1 contains only two UFC matches , one resulting in Rutten winning the UFC heavyweight championship against Kevin Randleman. Despite Rutten's relatively small role as an active UFC fighter, his high regard within the circle was enough for UFC President Dana White to surprise Rutten in 2015 by announcing his induction into the UFC Hall of Fame. As MMA Junkie reports, Rutten was genuinely astonished when he learned of his induction. He was a special induction in the Hall's "pioneer class," which was designed to honor professional fighters who dominated the ring in the wild days before the introduction of unified MMA rules in 2000. As UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta stated: "He's a pioneer of the UFC. He was there in the early days as one of the guys that's really responsible for keeping this promotion going." Biopics From The 2010s That Lied To Your Face
Biopics may be based on true stories, but that doesn't mean they are true stories. Often, screenwriters and filmmakers have to juice up the tales they're telling, and sometimes they can end up a little taller than some might like. Here are the biggest lies biopics told you in the past decade. Bohemian Rhapsody primarily tells the story of Freddie Mercury, the charismatic, supernaturally-voiced lead singer of Queen. It's natural that filmmakers wanted to place particular attention on the late, larger-than-life Mercury, but it was kind of a practical decision too, since the history of Queen the band doesn't contain nearly as many dramatic moments as Bohemian Rhapsody may claim. The film suggests Queen formed after Mercury introduced himself to Brian May and Roger Taylor and gave them an impressive impromptu audition. But when Mercury actually joined those guys, they were already his roommates. Then there's the matter of the movie suggesting Queen split up so Mercury could selfishly and arrogantly pursue a solo career. But Queen never broke up; sure, they took a hiatus in 1982, but that was so all the band members could go off and record their own stuff. By 1984, they'd released the album The Works and toured throughout 1984 and 1985 to promote it. That emotional sequence where the band let bygones be bygones to reunite for a triumphant appearance at Live Aid in the summer of 1985? For them, that was just another day at the office. The Reason Plane Tires Don't Explode During Landing
You know what they say: "The bigger they are, the harder they fall." And that's not just a metaphor, either — just ask the geneticist, physiologist, and biometrician J.B.S. Haldane, who once said: "You can drop a mouse down a thousand-yard mine shaft; and, on arriving at the bottom, it gets a slight shock and walks away, provided that the ground is fairly soft. A rat is killed, a man is broken, a horse splashes." So you can only imagine what a jumbo jet ought to do once it hits the ground. For context, a Boeing 747 weighs 403,000 pounds when empty, and 875,000 pounds at max weight. Planes usually land at around 170 miles an hour, too — and yet you've probably never seen a news story about an airplane tire bursting like a horse thrown down a mineshaft. So why doesn't landing usually affect an aircraft's tires? Well, a commercial jet typically has 20 tires. Brandy Moorhead, the director of Off-Highway Product Development for Goodyear, explains that these tires are constructed using "a combination of proprietary synthetic rubber compounds" along with aluminum steel reinforcements and nylon fabrics. Moreover, they're filled with nitrogen, which is less sensitive to temperature and pressure changes than the air typically used in car tires. To ensure that the tires can withstand the weight of an aircraft, they're inflated six times as much as a car's tires. A plane can usually land 500 times before the tires have to be retread. After seven retreads, however, the tires end up essentially useless. That means it takes roughly 3,500 landings for most tires to kick the bucket. Still, that's not to say it doesn't happen. In June 2019, a United Airlines flight skidded off a runway because its tires exploded mid-landing. At least one person suffered a head injury while another injured their elbow. Then, in September 2019, a Qantas Airways flight had to reverse course because one of its tires exploded midair. Obviously, the landing process had nothing to do with that one, but it still goes to show that tires aren't necessarily safe just because you're putting no pressure on them. But why does this actually happen? Put short: human error. Goodyear Aviation's 2017 "Aircraft Tire and Maintenance" manual explains: "Over-inflation can cause uneven treadwear, reduce traction, make the tread more susceptible to cutting and increase stress on aircraft wheels. Under-inflation produces uneven tire wear and greatly increases stress and flex-heating in the tire, which shortens tire life and can lead to tire incidents." Furthermore, the manual warns that that tires exposed to higher-than average stress should be removed and scrapped. This can happen if a plane lands at too high a speed, or if the brakes are used an unusually high number of times. Unfortunately, a damaged or improperly maintained plane can easily turn a tire explosion into a tragedy. In 1991, blown tires caused a fire on a Nigerian Airlines jet. The plane subsequently crashed, and all 261 people on board perished. The Associated Press have reported that it was the world's 10th-worst air disaster at the time. An investigation determined that the tires had insufficient pressure required for safe travel. Sadly, maintenance personnel recognized the problem but chose not to address it. According to the New York Times, an exploded tire might also have caused a Mexicana Airlines jet to crash into a mountain in 1986, an event that killed 166 people. Experts believe that a broken wheel brake may have dragged across the ground, causing it to overheat, and in turn increase tire pressure to the point of bursting. Though planes have safety valves to prevent a dangerous buildup of pressure, sometimes fail-safes fail, and — in this case — the exploded tire could have caused a fire to erupt on the plane. Although aircraft tires are usually heavily safeguarded against the stresses they're put through, the sad truth is that no form of engineering is perfect — and a combination of bad luck and human error can often lead to the very worst kind of tragedy. #Airplanes #Aviation

Athletes Caught Cheating On Live TV
Cheating happens in professional sports more than we'd like to admit, and with cameras everywhere, it's hard for athletes to get away scot-free. Whether they've escaped official punishment or were ejected from the game, the following players were all caught ignoring the rules on live TV. Sammy Sosa's name will always be linked with Major League Baseball's steroid era, both because of his famous single-season home-run record chase with fellow slugger Mark McGwire and because he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003. The perception exists that everybody did it back in Sosa's day, and the sport's culture during the 1990s and early 2000s resulted in pitchers and hitters alike believing they had to use whatever possible to keep up. And Sosa wasn't just using performance-enhancing drugs. During the 2003 season, he was caught breaking a direct MLB rule after his bat shattered into multiple pieces during what otherwise would've been a routine groundout. Umpires quickly confiscated portions of his bat and determined that it had been corked. The umpire crew chief tossed Sosa for his crime, and MLB officials handed him an eight-game suspension that was later reduced to seven following an appeal. Sosa bulking up his muscles with the help of consuming something other than spinach was one thing. But swinging a corked bat is completely different, and some will always wonder how often he used one while blasting home runs over the wall. The Scariest Predictions That May Come True In The Next Decade
For better or worse, the future is never certain, and while there's plenty to get excited about in the next few years, there's a heck of a lot to be worried about, too. These are some of the scariest predictions that may come true in the next decade. Today, the use of remotely piloted drones is widespread in warfare, and most of the world's most advanced militaries have their own fleets of unmanned aerial vehicles. But there is one bottleneck that these militaries are eager to remove: the human pilot. This is because humans require things like food and sleep, and can generally only control a single vehicle at a time. But this problem can be overcome by the use of LAWs, otherwise known as lethal autonomous weapons. LAWs are similar to drones, but are completely piloted by AI and require no human intervention. The most terrifying thing about them, however, is the L in their name: Lethal. LAWs are authorized to kill without human oversight. "It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop...ever." On the surface, you can kinda see the argument for LAWs. Instead of sending humans to fight costly and bloody wars, international disputes would be solved by what are essentially fighting robot contests, with few humans hurt or killed in the process. Unfortunately, war isn't that simple. For one thing, once the enemy's robot army is destroyed, the humans would inevitably be next, and there's always going to be a strong likelihood of collateral damage. And then you've got the situations in which an army manned by LAWs comes up against an army that has none. Things aren't looking so ethical then, are they? But by far the biggest problems with LAWs come from the many what-if scenarios that surround them. What if they get hacked? What if a bug in their programming causes them to attack the wrong targets? What if a rogue nation or terrorist group gets their hands on them? Scariest of all, what if an army of LAWs are programmed to commit genocide? And if any of these things did occur, would anyone be able to stop them? It doesn't seem likely. People rely on satellites now more than ever. Even in an era when satellite television and other obvious uses of the tech are on the decline, there are hundreds of other ways you're using them even without you knowing it. GPS is a major example, but even basic communications systems often rely heavily on satellites. Without those helpful machines floating around in Earth's orbit, you'd suddenly lose a whole lot of stuff that you depend on every day of your life. And here's the problem: new satellites are constantly being launched, but the old ones are slow to be decommissioned or otherwise cleaned up. This leads to a build up of what's known as orbital debris, and this is starting to become a big concern. Remember the 2013 movie Gravity with Sandra Bullock? In that film, Bullock plays a NASA astronaut who is working on the Hubble Space Telescope when a missile strike on an old satellite causes an endless chain reaction of collisions. But this scenario wasn't made up for the film. It's a real thing, and it's known as Kessler Syndrome. If this were to occur, it's possible that some debris might not burn up in the atmosphere before reaching Earth, causing widespread death and destruction when it finally crashes down. Even more alarming, however, is the possibility that the chain reaction might just keep going, making it practically impossible to launch new satellites, as anything new that is sent into space will inevitably collide with the debris that already exists there. Keep watching the video to find out more of the scariest predictions that may come true in the next decade. The Untold Truth Of Sally Ride
Sally Ride entered the history books on June 18th 1983 when, as part of the crew of Space Shuttle STS-7, she became the first American woman in space. Ride has since been celebrated as a heroine and a pioneer but she was more than just an impressive resume in a space suit. Funnily enough, Sally Ride very nearly never became a NASA astronaut. As a young woman, she was a strong tennis player and almost opted for sport instead of space. Ride started taking tennis lessons at age 10, and her coach was none other than Alice Marble, a pro with four U.S. Open wins and two Wimbledon championships under her belt. Having received a scholarship to play tennis at LA's famed Westlake School for Girls in the late sixties, Ride was eventually ranked 18th among junior girl players in the United States and even received encouragement to go pro from the legend Billie Jean King. When Ride left Southern California for Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, she didn't stop playing. In fact, she won the Eastern Collegiate Tennis Championships two years in a row, prompting her to return to the golden state to pursue a career in professional tennis. But this wasn't meant to be. In a 2006 interview, Ride explained that she quit the sport because her forehand was weak but her mother thought it was because Ride, a perfectionist, wasn't always able to control her game. Either way, she eventually decided to go back to school to study English and physics. Anyone who's seen movies like Apollo 13, Hidden Figures or First Man knows that NASA began as the very definition of a boys' club. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration became a thing in 1958, and it wasn't until twenty years later that the first women were officially admitted to the astronaut program. Sally Ride was part of that inaugural class. Ride and four other women were part of NASA's Astronaut Group 8, which also included three African-American men and the program's first Asian American. American women had previously been part of the astronaut training program — but none of those women made it into space.
