While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, a huge corporation like UPS has proven since 2004 how avoiding left turns in its trucks can significantly increase its bottomline while reducing emissions and accidents. With nearly 100,000 trucks and hundreds of aircraft, UPS averages 15.8 million packages delivered daily worldwide. While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, since UPS implemented a right turn policy in 2004, they have significantly increased profits while reducing emissions and accidents. UPS estimates the right-turn-heavy policy, combined with its routing software, shortens routes by 20.4 million miles and saves 10 million gallons of gas while delivering an additional 350,000 packages and reducing CO2 emissions by about 20,000 metric tons each year. UPS engineers noticed how waiting to turn left caused trucks to fall behind on their schedules, consume more gas, and increase the probability of accidents. Their software maps routes with only right-hand turns unless it's quicker or easier to proceed with a left-hand turn. A driver estimates they do about 90% right-hand turns. The television show Mythbusters tested the policy with one route using 8 left and 4 right turns, and another route using 1 left and 23 right turns. The UPS-like route was just over 1 mile and 9 minutes longer, but it reduced gas consumption from 6.8 to 4 pounds. UPS' software probably would've added one or two more left-hand turns to be more efficient on time while still saving gas.

One of the best evenings plane spotting ever. There was a surreal feel in the air and it was an evening I won't forget. I've uploaded a couple of videos from this trip last year but I purposely left you waiting for the best videos, and now they're here. East Midlands Airport (EMA/EGNX) is a big cargo airport in the UK, with numerous cargo flights arriving every evening, and then departing in the morning. So when my Dad and I went up to East Mids on the 20th/21st July 2013, we got the evening arrivals, spotting from about 16:00 until 21:30, then got the early morning departures from about 05:00 to 06:30. MORNING DEPARTURES: http://youtu.be/Enbjsf4WSpg All the cargo flights arrive within a couple of hours, making filming there really exciting! During the evening hours East Midlands gets hectic, with tens of flights arriving and many wanting to depart too. We absolutely loved it, and seeing as this was filmed back in Summer 2013, we are looking to go back soon! This video begins as I typically like to start them, with a nice intro including a view of the spotting location in which all the clips were filmed. Then straight into the cargo landings! - : UPS 767-300 Jet2 737-300 Swiftair EMB120 Star Air Maersk 767-200 Icelandair Cargo 757-200 Star Air Maersk 767-200 Atlantic Airlines BAE ATP DHL A300-600 TNT 737-400 DHL 757-200 DHL A300-600 (Retro Livery); the last arrival we caught before heading back because the lighting was deteriorating, 21:30pm. There wasn't much special that we hadn't already filmed after this arrival anyway:) The brilliant variety of airlines and aircraft we saw on this trip, plus the all around epic spotting location meant East Midlands is a must re-visit in our eyes. A lawsuit has been filed. As of March 2018, it is still working its way through the slow legal system. We will update when possible. Here are a couple court documents: http://sharkonline.org/images/Documents/nystatecomplaint.pdf http://sharkonline.org/images/Documents/nywaynecocomplaint.pdf Depositions are currently scheduled for May, 2018. The SHARK team appreciates those commenters who have a grasp of the US Constitution, and the vital rights it bestows on our citizens. Brave Americans have died to preserve and defend these rights, and it is tragic that so many people are not only unaware of their rights, but moreover are willing to give them up, and even insist that others do the same. The Constitution gives Americans the opportunity to stand, but standing requires a spine - something quite a number of people lack today. We will continue to stand strong with other proud Americans. November 13, 2016, a SHARK team uses an Angel drone to get an aerial view of Marshall Farms, a company in North Rose, New York that raises beagles, ferrets and other animals for research. Although absolutely no laws were broken, police made an illegal traffic stop that lasted more than an hour. The bullying and incompetence is hard to believe. Per the ACLU: Police may stop and briefly detain you only if there is reasonable suspicion that you committed, are committing or are about to commit a crime. The police lost their credibility, their dignity, and any legitimacy by selling out to a company that sells animals for research. Shame on the New York State Police and the Wayne County Sheriff's Department. We are in the process of reviewing our legal options, and will provide updates as decisions are made. Please email both law enforcement agencies about how their officers acted. Please be polite, and please let us know if you get a response: New York State Police: FIELDCMD@troopers.ny.gov IAFFAIRS@troopers.ny.gov Wayne County Sheriff: Sheriff Barry Virts firstname.lastname@example.org SHARK has set up a "Go Fund Me" Account to help with our travel and legal expenses. Help SHARK by donating here: https://www.gofundme.com/sharks-expenses There is no law against flying over private property. While we very much appreciate the supportive comments many people have left, we ask you to consider that threats against police officers is not the way to go. While SHARK will stand against bad cops, we do not wish them harm - we only wish to get rid of the bad cops, so the good police can do their jobs. Harming others is what we are trying to end, so let's not threaten even those with whom we very much disagree. We certainly understand the emotion, having seen so much corruption firsthand, but violence is not the answer.

Watch the next episode about Lauren Singer, who produced only a jar's worth of trash in 2 years: http://bit.ly/1QsnSqu Subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/c/seekerstories?sub_confirmation=1 In 2003, the local government in Kamikatsu, Japan decided to require that all residents comply with a new, rigorous recycling program - perhaps the most rigorous in the world. Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan. Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer. All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors. And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items. At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal." Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste. Now before we talk about a normal set of sunglasses and a pair of polarized ones and how they affect your vision we quickly need to discuss unpolarized and polarized light waves. The light emitting from the sun releases light particles, better known as Photons. These photons vibrate up and down, or side to side creating a bundle of light waves flying towards planet earth. Which means that the light provided by the sun flys in horizontal or vertical waves, therefore making the light waves unpolarized. But, the sunlight can untangle itself pretty easily. Those light particles just have to strike something, like a lake or in our case clouds, and they'll start vibrating in the same direction. Meaning all the photons start oscillating in the direction that's perpendicular to that surface. So, the light particles that bounce off a horizontal surface will then begin oscillating vertically. Meaning the reflected particles suddenly have fallen into sync reflecting as polarized light. Which brings us back to our polarized sunglasses. I admit the name was not well chosen, they should have called them "sunglasses with vertical or horizontal bars", which are able to block polarized light. So let´s say the sun light which gets reflected off a cloud, is coming vertically towards you, giving you that nasty glare. Now if you put on your polarized sunglasses with "horizontal bars" in them, they will block the vertical light waves and reduce the glare. Now you´ll think that´s great, cause pilots see sunlight reflecting clouds most of their time, so why can´t they wear polarized sunglasses? Here comes the problem! Watch the rest of the video to learn more about polarized sunglasses influence your vision in a modern airliner cockpit! A new truck driver endures the most challenging part of his entire career, in their first year. Just a few things the new trucker ought to be aware of, so you know what to expect in your first year. The pay is often lower than a more experienced driver, the loads dispatched to new drivers aren't usually premium loads, new drivers are often kept out on the road for very long periods of time, and sometimes trucking companies take advantage of new drivers. This first year may be somewhat stressful, but is necessary to get in hours behind the wheel, and get experience to add to your resume. Trucking companies like to hire drivers with experience, so you may not have much choice when it comes to your very first job in the trucking industry. After the first year, things should start to get better..... the driver will usually travel with his own company truck, and not as a team member/driver trainer, so become more independent. The loads will be better and things will fall into place. If you love to drive, hang in there... it'll be worth it in the long run. Signs - When you’re at the airport, you rely on the signs to point you in the right direction. Walkways - As you’ll see, the reason for many of these designs being the way they are is to prise as much money out of the traveller as possible. The golden hour - Still on moneymaking, let’s explain the concept of the ‘golden hour’. The ‘golden hour’ is what airport managers call the first hour after you’ve cleared security. Windows and lights - Modern airports tend to be designed with lots of glass, such as this one in Indianapolis. Everywhere you turn in new airports, there are huge windows. Departures and arrivals - In most airports, certainly the larger and more modern ones, arrivals is on the ground floor, and departures is on the floor above. Mobile - If you’ve travelled on a plane in the last few years, you’ll know you now have the option to do everything via your phone. Security - Airports are unfortunately prime targets for terrorists, with attackers hitting terminals in Belgium and Turkey over the last couple of years. Floors - Even the floors in airports are designed for a purpose. Firstly there’s wayfinding. In Atlanta , the floor tiles at check-in are coloured to lead you through the airport to the ticket counters. Art - Have you ever wondered why modern airports often contain giant works of art, like this one in Vancouver, or this one in Heathrow? There are many reasons. Queues - When you go to the airport, you’re going to have to queue. It’s a fact of life.
