Google tests drone delivery service in Australian outback

02:03
Watch engineers at Google trial their new delivery system that uses self-flying vehicles to drop off parcels in remote locations. With companies from fast food restaurants to Amazon all attempting to perfect delivery by drone it was only a matter of time before Google unveiled its vision. The resulting aircraft by Project Wing is larger than many rival drones, with a wingspan of approximately 1.5m (4.9ft), and is powered by four electrically-driven propellers. So far it has successfully delivered small items, including a first aid kit, candy bars, dog treats, and water to farmers in Queensland, Australia. The prototype Google drone is able to hover above its destination and drops its load on a string. The future of drone delivery, however, remains uncertain. Google has yet to find a commercial partner to bring the technology to the wider public and opponents have voiced concerns over safety and privacy. Delivery Drones | DHL steals UPS thunder

***************** If you would like to support Drone & Sundry for free and browse the internet without being tracked by ads and data trackers, download and use Brave browser: https://brave.com/dro980 ***************** Another day another #deliverydrone. This time, real world point to point deliveries in European weather. Last week UPS announced a partnership with Zipline to trial medical delivery flights in Rwanda. DHL are already out there doing it with their Parcelcopter tilt-rotor VTOL system. DHL Parcel has successfully concluded a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. The trial run, part of a larger research and innovation project, was conducted between January and March 2016 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. It represents the first time worldwide that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. Private customers in Reit im Winkl and up on the Winklmoosalm plateau were invited to test out the specially developed Packstations, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. During the three month trial period, they could simply insert their shipments into the Skyport to initiate automated shipment and delivery per Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. As part of the trial, the technically upgraded vehicle was able to deal with heavier loads, longer distances and delivery to an alpine region notable for its geographical and meteorological challenges. The first task was to master the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the test area. With that achieved, the DHL Parcelcopter then performed a series of flawless flights. Each round trip from valley to plateau at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level covered eight kilometers of flight. The drone’s cargo was typically either sporting goods or urgently needed medicines and it arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of take-off. The same trip by car takes more than 30 minutes during winter. Why Uber And Amazon Are Going After Truckers

10:38
The trucking industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars per year. Uber is going after this market with Uber Freight, an online platform that matches truckers with shippers looking to move cargo from one place to another. In 2018, about 3.5 million people in the United States were employed as truck drivers. With the explosion of Amazon and other e-commerce companies, the demand for truck drivers has been outpacing supply. In 2018, the United States trucking industry was short over 60,000 drivers. If the trend holds, experts predict there could be a 160,000 driver shortage by 2028. » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. Fuel cell technology boosts drone flight

05:58
(29 Mar 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: 4029669 LEAD IN: A UK-based energy tech company is demonstrating how hydrogen fuel cells can be used to significantly extend the range of commercial drones. Intelligent Energy says its technology can extend flight times from 15 minutes to up to two hours, benefiting a range of industries from inspection to search and rescue. STORY-LINE: Lift-off for this four-rotored quadcopter, but this is a drone with a difference. In this muddy Loughborough farmer's field, around 170 kilometres north of London, experts from UK-based energy group Intelligent Energy are testing what they claim to be a game-changer for drone tech. While it may not appear different from current commercially-available UAVs, this drone is powered using two hydrogen fuel cells. The only waste product is warm air and water. This, Intelligent Energy claims, solves two of the biggest problems associated with current battery-powered drones: flight time and re-fuelling. "So, I'm holding a drone with a fuel cell technology on board instead of a battery," explains Julian Hughes, acting managing director of Intelligent Energy's Consumer Electronics Division. "So, we've integrated the fuel cells to give an extended flight time over and above traditional batteries." Having announced last December they'd developed a prototype range-extender for drones, Intelligent Energy now feels confident enough to demonstrate its technology. On top of the drone are two hydrogen fuel cell stacks fitted with fans to usher in oxygen, therefore prompting the chemical reaction. Underneath is a 350 millilitres hydrogen tank which, Intelligent Energy say, can be changed in around a minute once depleted. Hughes says the water by-product produced by the reaction is so minimal it disappears as vapour, similar to what humans breathe out. They claim any added weight is negated by the extended flight time. "So, on the top are the two fuel cell stacks, they need oxygen which is from the air, which is what the fans help and underneath is the hydrogen," he explains. "So, the hydrogen and the oxygen run across the fuel cell plates and produce electricity." Intelligent Energy believes this application of hydrogen fuel cell technology will be a game-changer for the rapidly-growing commercial and enterprise drone market. Independent research firm, MarketsandMarkets, expects the global commercial drone market to sky-rocket in the coming years, reaching $5.59 billion USD by 2020. But, Hughes says it's currently held back by the short range and long re-charging times associated with conventional batteries. "So, the main problem with current battery technology on drones is flight time - you get around 15 minutes and then you have to re-charge the battery for a number of hours," he says. "And with fuel cell technology that we now have put on board, the flight times are significantly increased, up to between an hour and two hours. "And no need to recharge the battery, all you need to do is change the fuel source and that takes around a minute." It's thought longer flight times and quicker refueling will open a wide range of possibilities for high-flying drone tech. Inspection, search and rescue, aerial photography, precision agriculture and parcel delivery could all benefit. Having completed an engineering PhD at Cambridge University, Dr. Ben Todd founded London-based Arcola Energy, an engineering services company which specialises in fuel cells and hydrogen. Dr. Todd says drones are potentially a good use for hydrogen fuel cell tech, but only when its application outweighs the added cost and complexity. Dr. Todd says people shouldn't be worried about any safety implications. The Tesla Roadster Whisperer

10:41
Carl Medlock used to work at Tesla. Now he's one of the few people in the U.S. that can fix the company's original Roadster car. Medlock & Sons in Seattle rehabs Tesla Roadsters, and can fix any electric car -- they also convert internal combustion engine vehicles into pure battery electrics. Roadster drivers may be some of the earliest supporters of Tesla, but many feel neglected by Elon Musk's car company. Unlike owners of the newer Model S, X or 3, they can't book a service appointment through the Tesla app, and the carmaker doesn't manufacture spare parts for their vehicles even though they're only about 11 years old. Since 2014, the tucked-away repair shop Medlock & Sons has been one of the only places where Roadster owners can send their beloved electric cars for serious repairs, upgrades or maintenance if they're not getting what they need from Tesla. One customer had his Roadster waiting at a Tesla service center for over a year because the component it required, a 400-volt controller, wasn't available according to records Medlock shared with CNBC. Although Tesla put the customer in a loaner Model S while he was waiting, he eventually took his Roadster to Medlock. Typically, people go to Medlock & Sons to fix their crashed Roadsters, or to have their Roadster electronics rebuilt, ceramic coatings painted on, or to have sound reduction, custom audio or custom headlights installed. Many of the shop's clients are leaders in the tech industry, or actors and other celebrities, who refer to Medlock as the "Roadster whisperer." » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. The Rise Of Solar Power

14:48
Solar power is on the rise. You can see the evidence on rooftops and in the desert, where utility-scale solar plants are popping up. The picture is not all rosy, but if the recent past is any indication, solar power is going to help lead the transition to a carbon-free future, and it might do it faster than we all expected. Elon Musk and Tesla promised solar roof tiles in 2016, but the industry might not need an upgrade as its grown significantly with the solar panels currently available. You can see the evidence both on individual rooftops and in the utility-scale solar plants increasingly popping up in deserts across the country. In the United States, of all about 30% of the new power capacity added to the grid in 2018 was from solar. But the picture is not all rosy. Solar power (and sunshine) is intermittent and the price of lithium ion batteries, one of the most popular current storage solutions, is still relatively high. These are real problems that the industry needs to tackle if solar is going to reach its potential. However, if the recent past is any indication, solar power is going to help lead the transition to a carbon-free future, and it might do it faster than we all expected. Why Dunkin' Is Taking On Starbucks And Betting On Coffee

15:26
Dunkin' (formerly known as Dunkin' Donuts) is spending $100 million to become a major player in coffee. CEO Dave Hoffmann says espresso is going to be key to fueling the company's long-term growth. The shift in strategy comes at a time when traffic in stores has slowed and annual comparable store sales have taken a dip since 2017. While slow traffic and lagging same-store sales aren't unique to Dunkin', they are dialing up pressure on the chain. The question now - will Dunkin' be able to stand out in a crowded field as it bets big on becoming a major player in the coffee wars. Can Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10+ Shoot Pro-Quality Video?

07:37
Samsung’s $1,099 Galaxy Note 10+ is the best Android phone you can buy. It’s packed with everything most people want in a modern flagship device, from a great display to awesome cameras, even if there are a few sacrifices, such as no standard headphone jack. It starts at $1,099, which is expensive for most people. But it offers pretty much anything you could want out of a phone, including great battery life, fast charging, tons of storage and water resistance. It also has Samsung’s S Pen stylus for jotting notes and new air gestures that let you control music, the camera and more. Samsung and Apple’s earnings reports have shown that buyers are reluctant to purchase phones that cost $1,000 or more, instead choosing to hang on to older devices for longer. But there are still buyers in the segment, and for folks who don’t want an iPhone, the Galaxy Note 10+ is your best bet. UPS tests drone delivery of medicine in Massachusetts - TomoNews

00:59
CHILDREN’S ISLAND, MASSACHUSETTS — Package delivery company UPS partnered with drone-maker CyPhy Works to conduct a test delivery using a drone last Thursday. The drone used in the test delivery was CyPhy Works’ Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications system (PARC). It flew three miles over the Atlantic Ocean from Beverly, Massachusetts to Children’s Island, where it successfully delivered an asthma inhaler to a child at the camp. The PARC drone is battery-powered and equipped with night vision. It also features secure communications system, preventing information from being intercepted or disrupted. “Drone technology used in this way can save lives and deliver products and services to places that are difficult to reach by traditional transit infrastructures, ” Helen Greiner, the founder and chief technology officer of CyPhy Works said in a press release. Greiner told NBC49.com that the drones are not going to replace delivery trucks. The United States Federal Aviation Administration’s rules for commercial use of drones officially took effect last month, which include a number of restrictions on commercial drone operations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. 100's Of Drone Pilots Quit Their Jobs...

Hundreds of drone pilots decide to quit their jobs every year because of the huge stress. High demand for intelligence makes them working for 14 hours a day, which is 4 times more than traditional military pilots. U.S. Air Force doesn’t have enough capacity to fill the shortage and therefore wants to encourage more operators to stay by boosting their salaries. Amazon Testing Drone Delivery System

01:20
Support My Channel By Shopping on Amazon! http://amzn.to/2atadUZ SUBSCRIBE https://goo.gl/OXghgH https://www.facebook.com/deejay.gabriel.7 Amazon's chief executive has revealed that the company is testing a new service involving delivery by mini-drones to get packages to customers in just 30 minutes. Jeff Bezos appeared on CBS television's 60 Minutes programme in the US where he played a video from their website showing tiny robotic devices, called 'octocopters', picking up items in small yellow buckets and whizzing them through the air. "I know this looks like science fiction. It's not," Mr Bezos said. "We can do half-hour delivery ... and we can carry objects, we think, up to five pounds which covers 86% of the items that we deliver." The mini-drones are powered by electric motors and could cover areas within a 10-mile radius of fulfillment centres, thus covering a significant portion of the population in urban areas in the US. The retail giant's ambitious project still requires additional safety testing and federal approval but Mr Bezos estimated that Amazon 'Prime Air', as it would be called, would be up and running in four to five years. They operate autonomously and drop the items at the target locations thanks to GPS coordinates transmitted to them. "It's very green, it's better than driving trucks around," said Mr Bezos. Amazon said the octocopters would be "ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place," noting that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles. It projected a more optimistic timeline than Mr Bezos himself for the project to be activated, saying the FAA's rules could be in place as early as 2015 and that Amazon Prime Air would be ready at that time. Mr Bezos hinted that part of the motivation behind the mini-drones was to make sure Amazon remains on the cutting edge of the retail industry. "Companies have short life spans ... And Amazon will be disrupted one day," he said. "I would love for it to be after I'm dead." It is not known if there are plans for the service to be launched outside of the US.
