The Madeiran capital is mainly known for the historic city of Funchal, a popular resort destination and the birthplace of Cristiano Ronaldo. But hold up! It’s also known as the home to one of the most dangerous runways on Earth. Pilots flying into the coastal airport must undergo additional training, studying the approach in detail. Airlines wishing to fly into Funchal require special approval from the Portuguese aviation authority. No instrument landing system approach exists at Funchal, so pilots must navigate the challenging terrain manually. The destination is particularly tough because of strong and highly variable Atlantic winds. Basically there’s mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. As if that weren’t enough, the runway has been extended on uhhhhhhh… stilts!!! The extension has actually been constructed on 180 concrete pillars, each standing 230 feet above the rocky, windswept coastline. It’s kind of insane when you look at it from the side. 9 - Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Nepal Tenzing-Hillary or, Lukla Airport, is a small airport in the town of Lukla in eastern Nepal. The airport is situated in the Himalayas at 9000 feet above sea level. This high altitude often causes difficulty for the pilot to control the landing speed of the plane. The airport is popular because Lukla is the place where most people start the climb to Mount Everest Base Camp. There are daily flights between Lukla and Kathmandu during daylight hours. Well, in good weather anyways. Although the flying distance is short, high winds, cloud cover, and changing visibility often mean flights can be delayed or the airport is just simply closed. The runway is a short asphalt strip. It’s only 1,500 feet long and 65 feet wide with a gradient of 12% from north to south. Because of its size, it can only accommodate small airplane and helicopters. The topography of the runway makes any go-around impossible. At the south, the runway is the end of an angled drop of about 2000 feet! This cliff is fenced off, thank goodness, as a precautionary measure. At the northern end of the runway there’s a huge mountain terrain. Pretty much, this airport doesn’t leave much room for error! The landing plane comes from the north to the south of the runway, so the plane will have go round the mountain and land on an uphill runway. Hey, at least they planned out this one pretty well, because being uphill helps stop the plane before it hits the fence and falls off the cliff! 8 - Barra Airport, Scotland Have you ever landed on a beach? The airport on the tiny Outer Hebridean Island of Barra is actually a wide shallow bay which scheduled planes land, making it a pretty cool curiosity in the world of aviation. The tiny Scottish airport on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean has been voted the world's most stunning landing spot in 2011. The airport is unique, being the only one in the world where scheduled flights use an actual beach as the runway! Flight times are dictated by the tide and the 'runway' is washed away every night, because at high tide these runways are under the sea. The beach is set out with three runways in a triangle, marked by permanent wooden poles at their ends. The aerodrome isn’t licensed for night use, although emergency flights occasionally operate at night from the airport, with vehicle lights used to illuminate the runway and reflective strips laid onto the beach! 7 - Matekane Air Strip, Lesotho Matekane Air Strip is an airport in Lesotho with a 1,300 foot runway that extends to the edge of a 2,000 ft. cliff. Located high in the mountains, take-offs here are NOT for the faint of heart!

It seems that Dubai always aspires to carry out the largest, most luxurious and most eccentric projects in the world. In this small territory we can find the tallest building, the most luxurious hotel, and even the largest international airport on the planet. Located in a strategic enclave at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the growth process of Dubai is one of the fastest in human history. In just over 20 years it has gone from being a remote and lost enclave in the desert to becoming one of the world's great capitals. In this period of time the emirate of Dubai has multiplied by four its population, by nine the number of visitors, and by eight the size of its economy, But ... How has all this development been achieved? Has it all been just a matter of oil? Well in this VisualPolitk video we’re going to talking all about Dubai. Saudi Arabia future 1 trillion mega projects 2018 2030. Saudi Arabia already changed and it will change in the future. This country is an oil rich state. Saudi Arabia is now among the most powerful countries in the planet. Now Riyadh, the capital is full of skyscrapers and is very modern. The architecture of Saudis cities are awesome . Here are 6 mega projects that will reshape this country. Number 6 King Abdullah Economic City : With a total development area of 173 km² (66.8 sq mi), the city is located along the coast of the Red Sea, around 100 km north of Jeddah, the commercial hub of Saudi Arabia Number 5 : King Abdulaziz Airport The new King Abdulaziz International Airport three-stage development started in September 2006, and is currently scheduled for a soft start in May of 2018. The project is designed to increase the airport's yearly capacity from 13 million to 80 million passengers. The expansion includes brand new passenger terminal building, air traffic control (ATC) tower, airfield hard standing and paved areas, lighting, fuel network systems and storm water drainage network. There will also be a newly constructed support services building and upgrades to the existing runway and airfield systems. The three stages, according to GACA – the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia, will be marked by staged capacity increase to 30 million, 60 million and 80 million passengers per year. The new airport will be accessed by the Haramain High Speed Rail network. Prince Majed Street will connect to the Al-Laith Highway, forming a fast north-south transit route. Number 4: Riyadh Metro The Saudi Arabian government awarded $22.5 billion in contracts to three foreign-led consortia on Sunday for the design and construction of a metro rail system in the capital Riyadh. The project, which will involve six rail lines extending 176 kilometers (110 miles) and carrying electric, driverless trains, is the world's largest public transport system currently under development, Saudi officials said. NEW NON-STOP FLIGHT SPEEDS SHIPMENTS FROM U.S. TO THE MIDDLE EAST • Recently deployed Boeing 747-8F improves time-in-transit by one day to key destinations in Middle East, a gateway to Africa & the Indian subcontinent • Announcement follows news of UPS’s role as official logistics provider for Expo 2020 Dubai Louisville, USA/Dubai, UAE - 5 February, 2018 – UPS (NYSE:UPS) is launching a daily non-stop flight from its Worldport® global air hub in Louisville, KY., to Dubai, UAE, reducing time-in-transit between the United States and key destinations in the Middle East by a full business day. The flight, operated with one of UPS’s new 747-8F freighters, is part of the build out of UPS’s smart global logistics network and takes place as the company plans for its role as official logistics provider for Expo 2020 Dubai. “The UAE trades with all 50 U.S. states and has grown to become the U.S.’s largest export destination in the Middle East. Dubai’s importance as a global trade hub increases every day – and we’re now getting there a day faster with our small package express carrier and cargo offerings,” said Jim Barber, President, UPS International. “Growth potential is great for companies accessing the UAE and other rapidly developing industrial and commercial sectors in the region. Our new flight is another example of how UPS’s smart global logistics network, which carries three percent of the world’s GDP every day, constantly evolves to service increasing international trade demands.” At approximately 7,700 miles (12,400 km), the route is the longest regularly-scheduled flight UPS has ever operated, and is made possible by the new 747-8s, which offer greater payload over long range. The new flight is currently operating on a weekly basis and will become a daily flight on February 27th, operating Tuesday through Saturday. The new flight is part of plans to expand UPS’s presence in Dubai, the headquarters of UPS’s Indian Subcontinent Middle East & Africa (ISMEA) region, by establishing capacity, technology and staff capabilities to serve customers shipping to and through Dubai in the buildup to Expo 2020 and beyond. UPS has been operating in the region since 1989. “Our customers are demanding more capacity, and we’re providing it with this non-stop connection to Dubai,” said UPS Airlines President, Brendan Canavan. “UPS has made a strategic investment in 747-8 jumbo jets, the largest aircraft we have ever flown, to offer sustainable lift on long-range international routes like this.” The Louisville-Dubai flight leg is part of an “around-the-world” flight route that begins and ends at UPS Worldport in Louisville, KY. After arriving in Dubai, new package and freight volume is loaded onboard the aircraft before it departs for Shenzhen, China, home to UPS’ largest facility in Asia. U.S.-bound volume is then loaded in Shenzhen and the aircraft returns to Worldport via Anchorage, AK. With the addition of this new flight, the volume capacity on UPS’s current Cologne to Dubai flight increases to better serve the needs of customers connecting Europe to the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Africa.
