While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, a huge corporation like UPS has proven since 2004 how avoiding left turns in its trucks can significantly increase its bottomline while reducing emissions and accidents. With nearly 100,000 trucks and hundreds of aircraft, UPS averages 15.8 million packages delivered daily worldwide. While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, since UPS implemented a right turn policy in 2004, they have significantly increased profits while reducing emissions and accidents. UPS estimates the right-turn-heavy policy, combined with its routing software, shortens routes by 20.4 million miles and saves 10 million gallons of gas while delivering an additional 350,000 packages and reducing CO2 emissions by about 20,000 metric tons each year. UPS engineers noticed how waiting to turn left caused trucks to fall behind on their schedules, consume more gas, and increase the probability of accidents. Their software maps routes with only right-hand turns unless it's quicker or easier to proceed with a left-hand turn. A driver estimates they do about 90% right-hand turns. The television show Mythbusters tested the policy with one route using 8 left and 4 right turns, and another route using 1 left and 23 right turns. The UPS-like route was just over 1 mile and 9 minutes longer, but it reduced gas consumption from 6.8 to 4 pounds. UPS' software probably would've added one or two more left-hand turns to be more efficient on time while still saving gas.

There’s a UPS parking lot packed with truck trailers behind our Hell’s Kitchen office. On any given day–but during the holiday season in particular–the place is buzzing with activity, as its delivery fleet hitches up to and drops off the trailers. Due to space constraints, this plays out like an IRL game of Tetris, which we captured from a camera mounted on our roof in this 24-hour timelapse. Watch the entire puzzle-like dance play out in about three minutes above. Good luck making it through to the end. What is LOGISTICS? What does LOGISTICS mean? LOGISTICS meaning - LOGISTICS pronunciation - LOGISTICS definition - LOGISTICS explanation - How to pronounce LOGISTICS? Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Logistics is generally the detailed organization and implementation of a complex operation. In a general business sense, logistics is the management of the flow of things between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet requirements of customers or corporations. The resources managed in logistics can include physical items such as food, materials, animals, equipment, and liquids; as well as abstract items, such as time and information. The logistics of physical items usually involves the integration of information flow, material handling, production, packaging, inventory, transportation, warehousing, and often security. In military science, logistics is concerned with maintaining army supply lines while disrupting those of the enemy, since an armed force without resources and transportation is defenseless. Military logistics was already practiced in the ancient world and as modern military have a significant need for logistics solutions, advanced implementations have been developed. In military logistics, logistics officers manage how and when to move resources to the places they are needed. Logistics management is the part of supply chain management that plans, implements, and controls the efficient, effective forward, and reverse flow and storage of goods, services, and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customer's requirements. The complexity of logistics can be modeled, analyzed, visualized, and optimized by dedicated simulation software. The minimization of the use of resources is a common motivation in all logistics fields. A professional working in the field of logistics management is called a logistician.

The following video outlines five purchasing and procurement strategies all geared towards lowering vendor prices and or reducing supply chain and inventory management costs. These strategies are put forth from someone who has worked in sales and marketing for 20 years and wanted to combine the best strategies employed by the best purchasing negotiation teams. In essence, these strategies come from those purchasing and procurement agents I have negotiated with. They include the most successful strategies employed against me. The first includes not tipping your hand and or broadcasting your needs too soon in the negotiation process with a salesperson. Instead, nail down your price and then use your requests, needs and or concession to reduce pricing. For instance, agree upon a final price and then ask for a discount or reduced price for 1) prepaying total or a portion of your purchase, 2) prompt payment incentives like net-10 day terms 1 to 2 percent discount or 3) increasing volumes or committing to long-term supply contracts or orders. The second tip includes avoiding using veiled threats - which are simply threats you have no intention of following through on. When you threaten vendors too much without ever following through on a threat, then you are simply training them not to take your threats seriously. Third, match a high-value concession for a high-value concession. In this case, come up with a list of requests and or "must-haves" as outcomes from the price negotiation. When the salesperson makes a request, make sure you counter with one of your own of equal value. Fourth, when it comes to getting price reductions from a salesperson, you have to sometimes appeal to their better nature. In this case, add a little personal touch to your negotiations. Ask for a price reduction by outlining the pressures and demands that are placed upon you as a purchasing agent. In this case, you have to attain a certain inventory cost structure so ask your salesperson to help you attain that. Finally, keep your vendor honest by constantly going out for competitive bids. Even the best of vendors can become complacent. However, if they know you know as much about pricing in the market as they do, then those vendors will be less likely to take advantage of you.

Technology is changing the landscape of supply chain at a breakneck pace, and organizations that are able to stay ahead of the curve often enjoy a significant advantage over their industry competitors. Digitization, cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence are all major factors in shaping operational strategy. These manufacturing innovations have given rise to a trend dubbed Industry 4.0. John Stroup, President and CEO of Belden Inc., paid a visit to The Boeing Center at Washington University's Olin Business School to share his wealth of knowledge, and to give a brief history of Industry 4.0, aka the Smart Factory.
