While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, a huge corporation like UPS has proven since 2004 how avoiding left turns in its trucks can significantly increase its bottomline while reducing emissions and accidents. With nearly 100,000 trucks and hundreds of aircraft, UPS averages 15.8 million packages delivered daily worldwide. While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, since UPS implemented a right turn policy in 2004, they have significantly increased profits while reducing emissions and accidents. UPS estimates the right-turn-heavy policy, combined with its routing software, shortens routes by 20.4 million miles and saves 10 million gallons of gas while delivering an additional 350,000 packages and reducing CO2 emissions by about 20,000 metric tons each year. UPS engineers noticed how waiting to turn left caused trucks to fall behind on their schedules, consume more gas, and increase the probability of accidents. Their software maps routes with only right-hand turns unless it's quicker or easier to proceed with a left-hand turn. A driver estimates they do about 90% right-hand turns. The television show Mythbusters tested the policy with one route using 8 left and 4 right turns, and another route using 1 left and 23 right turns. The UPS-like route was just over 1 mile and 9 minutes longer, but it reduced gas consumption from 6.8 to 4 pounds. UPS' software probably would've added one or two more left-hand turns to be more efficient on time while still saving gas.

Wire harness assembly: http://robot.fanucamerica.com/Products/Robots/assembly-robots.aspx Clear Automation developed this fully automated robotic assembly system for electrical wire harnesses; The system consists of four overhead-mounted FANUC LR Mate 200iD robots, a FANUC M-10iA robot, as well as custom winding, wire handling, and connecting mechanisms that produce six different harnesses ranging from 20 to 200 feet in length. It produces six electrical harness assemblies per minute. Some portions of the process are considered sensitive intellectual property and are not shown in this video. An LR Mate 200iD robot picks new wire from the decoiler, clamps it into place in a winding head, and the machine winds the wire to the appropriate length as selected by the operator through the HMI. Once the appropriate length is coiled, the wire cutters snip the wire, and the LR Mate handles the end of the wire back into a clamp within the winding head so that the coil doesn’t unravel. One LR Mate is responsible for two turntables that include six coil winding heads. After the coils are wrapped in plastic, they are moved to the FANUC M-10iA robot. The FANUC M-10iA robot picks a coil and presents it to a heater. As previously mentioned, the system handles six different lengths of wire assemblies. Therefore each pallet needs to be automatically adjusted to fit the proper coil size. To do this, a height sensor relays information to a servo, which sets the appropriate pallet height for each individual coil. The pallets of coil move down a conveyor to two LR Mate 200iDs, designated for deploying inner and outer wire ends. The wire ends will eventually be cut to length, stripped of insulation, straightened, and inserted into connectors. The coils then move to an inspection station. The vision system checks the wires for length, straightness, and shape. The coil is also checked for continuity before being placed on the finished conveyor. Finished windings travel down the conveyor to the end of the system process where an LR Mate picks finished windings and places them on a conveyor out of the system. Rejected windings are place on a separate reject chute; Coils could be rejected if they lack continuity. There’s a UPS parking lot packed with truck trailers behind our Hell’s Kitchen office. On any given day–but during the holiday season in particular–the place is buzzing with activity, as its delivery fleet hitches up to and drops off the trailers. Due to space constraints, this plays out like an IRL game of Tetris, which we captured from a camera mounted on our roof in this 24-hour timelapse. Watch the entire puzzle-like dance play out in about three minutes above. Good luck making it through to the end. Japan, like the rest of the developed world, has taken a serious shine to online shopping. 3.9 billion home deliveries were made in 2016 alone, and that volume doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Japan's wholehearted embrace of online shopping is fueled, in part, thanks to the country's efficient shipping infrastructure, in which next-day delivery is the norm. Hit the streets in Japan and you're bound to spot uniformed men and women delivering packages by truck, scooter, bicycle, and on foot with speed and dedication that may surprise those from other countries. But the ever-increasing number of packages is putting strain on these workers and the logistics that support them. On this edition of Japanology Plus, we take a look at the system as it exists and some of the new ideas that will be needed to keep it running in the future. As we learn on the program, the current home delivery system in Japan, in which trucks make front-door stops in residential areas, was established in 1976. This watershed innovation was the brainchild of Masao Ogura, the then-president of private shipping company Yamato Transport. Up to that point, home delivery had been exclusive to the post office, which was government-run at the time. Ogura encountered opposition from the government authorities responsible for that service, but he was determined to set up his new system regardless. It's been reported that one impetus came when Ogura's family ran into trouble trying to send old clothes to relatives in another prefecture—even the president of a transport company couldn't get a package from one household to another! The service was launched in January 1976 in Tokyo and the surrounding area, with a grand total of 11 parcels delivered on day one. By the end of the next fiscal year, however, Ogura's service had shipped almost two million packages. Rival services sprang up one after another, and many, like Ogura's original, employed cute animal logos, causing competition among them to be branded the "animal war." Part of what made Ogura's service so popular—and set the standard for the rest of the emerging industry—was his dedication to customer service. As his drivers had to handle multiple tasks in addition to driving, he likened them to sushi chefs, whose work also goes above and beyond simply preparing sushi. As we see in the program, this tradition continues today: drivers must personally deliver packages, take payments, adjust their routes when customers call for redelivery, and more. This is not easy work and, as we hear, Japan is facing a shortage of drivers. Host Peter Barakan and expert guest Hiroaki Oshima meet at the site of one new trend in logistics: a giant ferry that transports both passengers and freight by sea. But even sea transportation has its limits. Japanese firms have really started thinking outside the box in order to move all those boxes. One issue hampering drivers is the fact that more people are outside the home all day, meaning many packages have to be redelivered, a huge drain on time and resources. The program explores some potential solutions, such as secure delivery boxes in new apartment buildings and even driverless trucks whose lockers can be accessed with a smartphone code. One more trend is that of convenience store pickup. When ordering a package online, customers can choose a convenience store near their workplace or home, then present a special code to the staff to receive their packages. This allows for 24/7 pickup and obviates the need for redelivery—though it does shift some of the work to already harried convenience store employees. This comes back to an important point made by Oshima near the end of the program: though some logistical jobs currently done by people will be taken over by automation, the human touch will remain, and it's possible emerging trends such as transport by sea, driverless trucks, drones, and more will require a whole new workforce of engineers, roboticists, drone pilots, and other jobs we can't yet imagine. To keep Japan's delivery services at their current high standard, these workers will also have to be as skilled as sushi chefs.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why are companies so intent on using technology to track our behavior? Our actions reveal what we desire, how we shop, and why we buy. Retailers can now learn so much more about shopper behavior than ever before, and while these “big data” applications create concerns about privacy, the detailed data can be used to design stores, product offerings and promotions that connect with our interests, speed up the shopping process, and help us find items we will buy. These new tools are critical to improving store efficiency and shoppability; and offer a vision of the future of retailing. Raymond R. Burke (Bloomington, IN USA) is the E.W. Kelley Professor of Business Administration at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, and founding director of the School’s Customer Interface Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility for investigating how customers interact with new retail environments and technologies. His research focuses on understanding the influence of point-of-purchase factors–including new products, product packaging, pricing, promotions, assortments, and displays–on consumer shopping behavior. Dr. Burke has served on the faculties of the Harvard Business School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. His articles have appeared in several major journals, including the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Consumer Research, the Journal of Marketing, and Marketing Science.
