27 YEARS Living Off-Grid on a Self-Built Island Homestead

13:36
Freedom Cove is a rare and very special place. It's a man-made floating island that acts as a homestead, an art installation, and a home to Catherine and Wayne in Tofino, BC, Canada. The project started with a small float home that was built using wood that had washed ashore after a storm, and since moving into it in 1992, they've gradually added new buildings, greenhouses, and an outdoor dance floor to create a fully off-grid, floating homestead where they can grow most of their own food, earn a living as artists, and reduce their environmental footprint. They have used as much reclaimed material as possible, including the flotation technology that has been discarded from nearby fish farms over the years. The site where they chose to settle in was chosen specifically because it had a fresh water source above sea level so they could have gravity fed water, and because the cove provided protection from winter storms. They use a mix of solar panels, a generator, propane and firewood for their various energy needs, and they have a new microbial wastewater system that will allow them to fully purify their waste. Before that, they had a tank that could be emptied in open water like most boats and vessels do. Catherine King and Wayne Adams are artists and carvers who make beautiful work and showcase some of it in their floating gallery. If you'd like to visit Freedom Cove in Tofino, BC, you can book a tour with Browning Pass here: http://www.browningpass.com/freedom-cove-tour-tofino/ Or you can reach out directly to Catherine and Wayne by email at: freedomcove4@gmail.com Special thank you to Shane for the good chats and the boat rides! Tentsile tree tents: floating treehouses mimic spider webs

13:03
Treehouse architect Alex Shirley-Smith wanted to create a portable treehouse, a kind of ready-made, floating shelter that could be assembled in any backyard, wood or even city streets. In 2010 Shirley-Smith released several tree tent prototypes inspired by spiders' webs. "A spider always uses three anchoring points and the web finds its own position in space that's a circle in between any of those 3 points. So as long as you've got 3 anchoring points this tent will find its own central position to create its own shape inside that triangle. The whole thing is sort of taken from spider's web technology or you know, what exists in nature. Biomicmicry." After refining 11 prototypes, Shirley-Smith and partner Kirk Kirchev finally released a production model tree tent- the Tentsile Stingray. Using just 3 tree straps, 2 poles and one fly sheet, the Stingray will shelter up to 4 people in mid-air. It takes about 10 minutes to set-up and a few minutes to take down. And best of all, it is one size fits all. The tent can be used as a camping alternative- to keep you comfortably suspended above any animals, bugs or uncomfortable rocks-, but the design could also prove the basis for a new type of eco-village. Kirchev dreams of one day creating a community of (much larger) tensile structures where portable villages could be mounted and disassembled in a day, leaving little impact on the forest floor. Idaho modern oldtimer builds underground & solar $50 houses

24:16
Mike Oehler lived for over 30 years in an underground home that he built for $50 (and expanded for $500) on his land in Northern Idaho near the Canadian border. Now in his seventies his arthritis keeps him from hiking up to his home, but he continues to “write and proselytize” In 1968 like thousands of other San Franciscans hoping to go “back to the land”, Oehler bought property and began to build a homestead. After spending a winter freezing in a small cabin, he designed a home that would use the earth as insulation. With his first attempt he fell into the easy errors of what he calls a “first thought house”: a hole cut into a hillside with south-facing windows. Gradually he began to innovate with subterranean design, creating better ways for letting light in: among them “the Hollywood Wing”, “the Royer foyer”, gables and most-importantly the “uphill patio” (which also provides space for an earth-sheltered greenhouse). He also created an inexpensive, low-tech approach to basic design with what he calls PSP or Post/shoring/polyethlene. Modern home in Mexican plateau revives ancient water harvest

20:19
In the slope of Tepozteco mountain, Meztitla (Náhuatl for “place near the moon”), Casa Meztitla is in a never ending relationship with nature, harvesting/filtering water the way it was done in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Surrounded by subtropical rainforest that remains untouched, its inhabitants believe that what the land gives should be returned to the property. In an area with no public water supply and a rainy season that lasts only from July through September/October, the home uses only the water it can capture and reuse from the property. Water flows through an intricate system of filtration. Two main (or three including the pool) water reservoirs exist: the potable water reservoir covered by the grass patio, and the open-air reservoir (using aquatic plants, fish and a pump) for irrigation which resembles “cenotes”, open air water sources sacred to Mayans. The water system relies on gravity and can store 30,000 liters; it provides enough water for the house all year round. Conceptually, this storm water management captures every drop of rain that touches the property (3800 square meters), uses it in different ways, and does not let a drop out. The result is abundant water and land that is constantly irrigated in a region with seasonal droughts. Secret building that could be a house from Middle Earth in The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings

10:40
A building in a secret location that could be a house straight from the set of a Lord of the Rings movie. This is an update of information for the hundreds of you that have emailed me asking for more info about the building. First off I will not reveal the location as by keeping it secret helps to preserve the building as the more people that know about it the more likely that someone will graffitti or damage it. That said here are a few answers to some of your questions: The building is in England. It was built over a period of several years starting in the 1980's. It was initally started as a shed for the farmer to store hay and other supplies but over time he continued adding to it as the farmer was also an artist. In total it took 11 years until the farmer stopped building it. It was never finished because the farmer sold up, due to a quarry opening up nearby and he did not want to live with the noise of big lorries all day long. It is not a building that was ever lived in but the room with stained glass windows called 'The Hermitage' was used by the farmer for wine and poetry evenings with his friends. He also used to sleep in the upstairs area during lambing season. The stained glass windows represent the four seasons, winter, spring, summer, autumn and the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. The building was constructed by initially using traditional dry stone walling methods followed by pouring concrete down the back of the walls for strength. To give a sense of scale, the doors are normal sized doors. This is not a miniture house, it is full size. The house was not built for a movie set and has not been in any movie. It was built purely as a hobby and a labour of love. In a newspaper interview the farmer said "I just got a bit carried away!" In response to all the comments about the turning sideways of the camera. I agree, it is annoying and makes viewing awkward. Explanation.... It was the first time this vid cam was used and it was thought that the camera would self correct when viewed if turned sideways to give a wider shot. Cameramans mistake!! :)

Modern Caveman - Man Builds A $230,000 House In 700-Year-Old Cave

SUBSCRIBE to the Barcroft network: http://bit.ly/Oc61Hj THE pressures of modern life mean that most of us have probably dreamt at one time or another of fleeing to the hills. But real-life caveman Angelo Mastropietro has made his hermit dream a reality - by spending over £160,000 turning a 700-year-old cave, carved into 250 million year old sandstone cliffs in the the Wyre Forest, into his dream home. The 38-year-old, originally from Worcestershire, was living a high-flying life as the head of a successful recruitment company in Australia when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007. The condition led to him being temporarily paralysed - and inspired him to seek a simpler life. From old Belgian water tank to dream tower house with a view

13:26
Patrick Mets loves “old, industrial buildings” and he’s always been fascinated by water towers. After years of scouting the Belgian countryside he found one for sale (for 30,000 euros or about $43,000 at the time) and began working to convert it into a home. “It was quite naive that we bought it because we didn’t have any permit to convert it into something else,” explains Mets. “And so it took us 12 years, 7 years to get the necessary permit and 5 years of renovation work.” Working with designer Mauro Brigham (NC & Bham), they tried to leave as much of the tower in its original state. Fortunately the 30-meter-high (90 feet) tower was built with windows- an oddity for a water tower-, but forty of them keep the converted home well lit. The water tank itself was kept mainly intact. Brigham and Mets added a floor inside it and cut holes out of the sides for views and it now serves as the kitchen and living room. After a couple years using the space as their full-time home, Mets and his partner Valérie Lecherf moved out to be closer to their daughters’ school. Today they rent the “Chateau d’Eau” for special events. Underground Rock House Construction

08:18
Old photos taken during construction, construction tips, look at the finished rock walls inside, exterior views. A newer video of the Underground Rock House with no music and narrated by the builder exists on YouTube. https://youtu.be/CpCmZIvZ-Yk I started with a 40 foot wide 12 foot deep space between two natural rock walls and proceeded to dig down another 18 feet so it would be a two-story home. Poured in place concrete slab and beams form the ceiling and floors allowing the interior walls to remain natural, beautiful stone. All of the doors lead out to concrete pathways between other rock formations. This is a two-story underground rock and concrete house. The house utilizes existing rock bluffs as the walls. It is located on 80 acres of rural timber land. It was designed and built entirely by one person from$28,000. of savings. Construction began in 1975 and took 8 ½ years. These particular rock bluffs were chosen because of the location of a spring that could be used as a water source. A 3000 gallon spring-fed water cistern supplies water to the house and a 2000 gallon pool. No air conditioning is required. A wood-burning stove supplies heat during the winter. Water is supplied by gravity from a spring above the house. There is no water bill, no sewer bill, no gas bill, and this house has a smaller electric bill than most homes. Concrete walls were water proofed by placing a perforated drain pipe at the bottom of the outside trench. It was covered with gravel and rocks to above ground level to keep any water from ever touching the wall. No wall coating or covering of any kind was needed. The lower floor is waterproofed with perforated drain pipes located in the hand placed rocks beneath the lower concrete floor slab. There are drain openings filled with gravel at the floor edges adjoining the rock walls. Waterproofing the roof was accomplished by designing the concrete roof beams to slide on metal plates embedded in concrete supports. This design minimizes expansion/contraction cracking. The few cracks that developed during curing were sealed with less than one tube of clear silicone caulk. The roof was covered with two 6 mil black plastic sheets sandwiching 3 ½” of rigid foam insulation and topped with 1 ½” of concrete and then dirt. The roof still has no leaks after 34 years. The dimpled concrete ceiling was formed by placing gravel on homemade concrete forms, covering the gravel with a 6 mm black plastic sheet and pouring the concrete on top of that. The concrete forms and gravel were removed and the ceiling painted white. The music is a YouTube selection entitled "Mario Bava Sleeps in a Little Later Than He Expected To" by Chris Zabriskie. WA maker turns skoolie, short-bus & container into family home

47:25
Seven years ago, Jeremy and Mira Thompson quit their jobs and sold their suburban home to hit the road in a short-bus they’d converted into a mobile home. After a year on the road, they’d gone through their savings and were thinking about starting a family. Now living on family property in rural Washington they bought a full-sized school bus at auction. This time they stripped away the metal behind the cab and embedded a wooden cottage inside their new vehicle. Jeremy used his experience as an auto body mechanic and recent education in architectural drafting to design their conversions. He had also turned his carpentry into paid work and needed a workshop. After finding a very affordable container - one that had been tagged as scrap-, Jeremy began to convert it into a wooden clad (on 3 sides) office with a green roof. Underground dome house stays warm in Omaha winters

12:13
Rebecca Weitzel and Jeff Waschkowski live in a buried home in Omaha, Nebraska and while winters temperatures can hit negative 30 degrees (record lows), inside the home is affected by the temperature of the earth, not the air, and rarely drops below 55°F (13°C). Built as a labor of love by Lloyd Texley, the former head of science for the Omaha Public School District, the underground home took him 10 years to build. He buried 3 rebar-enforced concrete domes under up to 15 feet of dirt. The home's only opening is a glass wall facing south. Waschkowski explains that because the indoor temperature reflects the heat of the surrounding earth, it mostly fluctuates between 64 and 74°F. The couple explain the home is also very quiet and soundproofed from the noise of their busy street. With all the cement, the home was fairly expensive and Waschkowski argues that berm houses (earth-sheltered homes) are about half the cost with most of the same benefits.

Most ISOLATED Homes In The World!

The Drina River House You’ve always wanted a house surrounded by a moat, right? Everyone has!! But how about taking it a step further and building your home in the middle of a river? Well, that’s what a group of boys decided to do in 1968 when they were looking for the ideal spot to sunbathe. 9. Casa Do Penedo The Casa Do Penedo, which means the house of stone, is in the Fafe mountains of northern Portugal. The 16.5-foot-tall house, built at 2,600 feet above sea level, is often referred to as the ‘Flintstones House’, and it’s clear to see why. 8. The Crystal Mill The Crystal Mill is one of the most famous, and isolated, homes in Colorado. It was built on a rocky outcrop in the Crystal river, and is surrounded by the most amazing views! It’s about 6 miles away from Marble, and is close to the former town of Crystal. 7. Katskhi Pillar How far would you go for your beliefs? Religious devotion can lead people to make big sacrifices for their faith, but one monk has taken the idea of isolation to a whole new level. Maxime Qavtaradze has spent the past 20 years living in a cottage on the Katskhi Pillar- a 131-foot-tall rock that stands above his monastery in Georgia. 6. Wordie House If you like the cold, and staying indoors for most of the year, then maybe this is the place for you. Wordie House is one of the most remote buildings on the planet- located on Winter Island in Antarctica. 5. Long Studio The Long Studio, on Fogo Island in Newfoundland, Canada, was built to give artists a secluded space to work. The modern structure has been built on a series of stilts to raise it above the ground- which makes it feel as if it’s hovering over the landscape. 4. The Solvay Hut Located on the north eastern ridge of the Matterhorn mountain in Switzerland, the Solvay Hut is the highest mountain hut owned by the Swiss Alpine Club, at 13,133 feet above sea level. 3. Ellidaey Island If you really want an isolated home, and an entire island to go with it- then how about Ellidaey island in Iceland? It’s a part of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago to the south of the country, and there’s quite a mystery to the place. 2. San Colombano Hermitage First built in 1319, the San Colombano hermitage was named after the Irish Saint Colomban who, according to legend, took up residence in the cave after vanquishing the dragon that originally lived there. A small church was then built at the entrance to one of the small caves to provide accommodation for pilgrims and monks. 1. Just Room Enough Island Just room enough island is, as the name would suggest, a small piece of land that is just room enough for a house, and barely anything else! It’s one of the almost 2,000 islands of the Thousand Islands chain on the New York side of the St Lawrence River, and is the location of one of the most famous isolated homes in the region. Fully plumbed DIY treehouses & tree-cabin in OR "treesort"

09:52
When Phil moved to Oregon decades ago to be near his children, he began dreaming about building a treehouse or two. Once his children had grown, he indulged the fantasy, and with the help of friend and neighbor Michael Garnier (see our video of his Ewok village style treesort), he began to build up. Today, he and his wife Jody have three self-designed structures: the Japanese-inspired Shiitake, Tudor-style Calypso and the Cottage (a cabin in a tree). They rent them out by the night (they're fully plumbed) and the couple dreams of building yet another (Jody wants it to feature a skylight and to call it the "Sky Palace"). 325-square-foot "cave" apartment with DIY & upcycled furniture

07:44
Monica Potvin and Markel Otaola bought the 30-square-meter (323-square-foot usable space) apartment in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter during their child-free years when location was more important than space. The tiny quarters had once been a space for the doorlady and it was half under-ground. After a makeover that included a lot of custom, DIY furniture, Potvin dubbed the home the "cozy cave". The couple lived here while Potvin was pregnant* and have even hosted dinner parties in this reduced volume. Thanks to some dual-purpose furniture, the place now sleeps four. In addition to the queen bed in the bedroom, there's a couch bed for one in the living room and a nook under the stairs where the couple crafted a mattress on top of what was once a seldom-used ledge. Much of the home is custom and all was crafted by the creative couple. Potvin (co-founder of the eco-design store Matteria) found an old pallet on the street and covered it with plastic to create a stylish coffee table (with space for magazines and books between the wood). A salvaged door is now the hallway mirror and old airplane food storage carts serve as bedside tables. Old Railway Carriage Converted Into Stunning Off-Grid Home

These two derelict old railway carriages have been converted into an absolutely stunning off the grid home. Packed full of character and history from their time on the railway, these carriages are now a wonderful place to call home. Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/livingbig Located in the Central Otago region in the South Island of New Zealand, this conversion project has been a true labour of love. The restoration and renovation took 8 years to get the home to it's current state working part time. https://www.livingbiginatinyhouse.com/railway-carriage-home-conversion/ Being located on such a remote property, the home is unable to connect to services and so is completely off the grid, capturing it's own rain water and generating it's power from a small solar system.
