12 of the World’s Most Insane Engineering Marvels

08:15
From Chandra X-Ray Space Telescope to Hong Kong International Airport here are 12 of the World’s Most Insane Engineering Marvels. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Chandra X-Ray Space Telescope Along with the Hubble Space Telescope Chandra is one of NASA’s most advanced space observatories. Chandra has advanced astronomers knowledge of stars, galaxies, black holes and the origin of life inducing elements. It was appropriately and fittingly named after Indian-American astrophysicist Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, whose work on black holes earned him a Nobel Prize in physics in 1983. Originally launched in 1999 the observatories longevity and scientific value has made it one of NASA’s most successful missions. In 2014 Chandra observed the awe-inspiring Tycho supernova remnant, which was created by the explosion of a white dwarf star. 5. Shasta Dam Stretching mightily across the Sacramento River in Northern California construction of the Shasta Dam took place from 1938 to 1945. Once completed it would back up water for over 35 miles to form Shasta Lake, California’s largest reservoir and a place that is visited by millions of vacationers annually. Frank Crowe, who had just helped finish the Hoover Dam oversaw the entire project, which included 4,700 workers building what was the second largest concrete dam in the country. Twelve million tons of gravel was needed for the project. Luckily a substantial supply was located in the nearby city of Redding. To transport this large quantity of gravel the world’s longest conveyor belt was constructed. It was 9.6 miles long and operated 24/7 for several years. 4. Millau Viaduct Soaring high above the clouds, the world was captivated by the Millau Viaduct when it opened in December 2004. The idea that the viaduct only took three years to build is almost as astounding as the bridge itself. Towers on the incredible structure rise to a height of one thousand one hundred and twenty-five feet, making it the tallest bridge in the world. Seven pillars weighing 700 tons each were built for the project that had to be placed in exactly the right place for the bridge to be a success. Multiple satellite signals were used to help pinpoint the right spots for the pillars to be placed. Bridge specialist Michel Virlogeux and renowned British architect Norman Foster were employed to design the Millau Viaduct which is widely regarded as an engineering marvel that has no equal. 3. Hubble Space Telescope Anytime you hear news about a new distant star or planet found in outer space it was likely discovered with the use of the Hubble Space Telescope, which has rested in low Earth orbit since 1990. It's named after Edwin Hubble, who took the largest telescopes of his day to the Mt. Wilson Observatory near Pasadena, California and discovered countless unknown planets and galaxies in the 1920’s. Experts have published over fourteen thousand scientific papers using data from the space telescope, making it one of the most productive instruments of science in history. At launch, it weighed twenty-four thousand pounds, and today it is twenty-seven thousand pounds and 43.5 feet long. 2. Hong Kong International Airport Though the Kansai International Airport in Japan was the first to be entirely built on an artificial island when it opened in 1994, it lies on soft land that has been sinking much more quickly than anticipated, ultimately making the project a potentially colossal failure. The Hong Kong International Airport went a lot better. The project took six years and around twenty billion dollars to build making it one of the biggest projects in the aviation industry. It lies on Chek Lap Kok, an island that is mostly made of land reclaimed for the construction of the airport. The 24-hour airport is one of the busiest in the world and holds one of the Earth’s largest passenger terminal buildings 1. ISS The International Space Station is not only the largest human-made object in orbit, but it also represents a collaboration of nations around the world. Five space agencies (NASA, Russia’s Roscosmos (ross cosmos), the European Space Agency, The Canadian Space Agency and the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency) representing fifteen countries were involved in constructing the one hundred billion dollar station. The structure was taken and built piece by piece in orbit and has been continuously occupied since November 2, 2000. Current plans call for ISS to be in operation until 2024, by which time some of its first components will be nearly three decades old.

Can a PASSENGER land a PLANE? Presented by CAPTAIN JOE

Today´s topic is one of the most ask passenger question, "Can a passenger land a plane?". There are so many rumours about this question, it´s just not true. So a few facts. My friend Carolin, has no connection to the aviation world besides from flying to holiday once in a while, obviously as a passenger. Now as soon as she sat down, the hardest part was establishing a communication between her and me, the ATC controller. Carolin was totally overwhelmed with all the switches and buttons, that it took nearly 20 minutes to find the push to talk button. In a real-life situation, if a plane does not respond within 20 minutes, fighter jets will be on their way intercepting the aeroplane as it causes a potential threat to national security, depending which land you´re flying across. Once communication was established, I had to give her instructions on how to set up the approach phase for an automatic landing, better known as AUTOLAND procedure. The AUTOLAND allows pilots to perform a fully automated landing in bad visual conditions, known as CAT3 approaches. More about that in future videos. Once the approach set up was completed, I had to give her instructions to familiarize with important levers and switches, such as the landing gear lever, the flaps, flight control computer and much more. Later I guided her via radar vectors towards the airport, constantly descending and reducing the speed accordingly. But see for yourself. My opinion if a passenger can land a plane. I´ll be honest with you! It´s impossible! We needed three attempts to just establish basic communication and Carolin accidentally brought the aircraft into a stall. Don´t ask how! And she was pretty nervous, although she knew it was a simulator. Imagine the anxiety in a real plane!? I know that there are many videos out there where apparently the passenger landed the plane, but all of the passengers had some kind of flying background. And the likelihood of both pilots being incapacitated is very unlikely. BIG THANK YOU TO TFC KÄUFER for making this video possible such as Lockheed Martin Prepar3D flight simulator, here a few more facts about the used simulation: Scenery ORBX A320 Flightsimlabs Simulator Prepar3D v4.1 I hope you enjoyed this video and where able to learn something from it as well. Siberian Sakha Republic - The Siberian Sakha Republic covers about twenty percent of Russia. Vale Do Javari, Brazil - This next one refers to a place that no modern, civilized human has ever set foot. The Mariana Trench - The Mariana Trench is the deepest point in the entire ocean. Gangkhar Puensum - Gangkhar Puensum, meaning "White Peak of the Three Spiritual Brothers", is the highest unclimbed mountain in the world, and the fortieth highest mountain overall. Star Mountains - The Star Mountains are an enormous mountain range in Papa New Guinea that stretches all the way from the country’s border with Indonesia to the Hindenburg Range – a neighboring mountain range with a less cool name. Yucatan Cenotes - The Yucatan Cenotes are a large cave network located in Mexico.A ‘cenote’ is a particular type of cave that is formed when limestone bedrock collapses. Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park - Tsingy De Bemaraha National Park is located on the western edge of Madagascar. Greenland - Despite being, you know, a country, there are large parts of Greenland that are unexplored. The Namib Desert - You may want to bring at least one water bottle if you decide to go explore the Namib desert, as the region, one of the most arid in the world, gets only two millimeters of rain on average every year. North Sentinel Island - North Sentinel Island tops this list because, of all these places, it is the one I would most strongly advice against visiting.

REASON WHY PLANES ARE PAINTED WHITE! Explained by CAPTAIN JOE

When a brand-new plane rolls out of the factory, they are very often painted in a greenish anti-corrosive paint, so that the plane can fly or be moved to the final assembly line and paint shop. Therefore they are nicknamed the "green jets" and are a rare sight for plane spotters. But once the plane arrives at the paint shop, let´s take an Airbus A380 as an example, it takes approximately 34 painters, working in three shifts each day for fifteen days to wash, prepare and paint the plane. After 6000 working hours, they´ve roughly applied 1100 kilograms (2425 lbs) of paint onto the plane. And that procedure needs to be repeated every seven to eight years, depending on the use of the plane and cleaning schedule. After applying a minimum of two layers, the plane gains a few more pounds to its dry operating weight, and even more, if a third more colourful layer is sprayed onto it such as the company logo etc. Therefore putting fancy detailed liveries onto planes is not only costly at first, but also increases it´s operating cost. For example, a Boeing 737 paint job can be as heavy as 500 kilograms which equals 6 passengers who aren´t paying for their flight and increasing the fuel consumption. See more about it in the video :) BIG THANK YOU TO TLV1979 who provided me with this amazing picutres, please check out his great collection of aviation pictures at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25695066@N00/ Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe Outro Song: Joakim Karud & Dyalla - Wish you were here https://goo.gl/kJ9pef ALL COPYRIGHTS TO THIS VIDEO ARE OWNED BY FLYWITHCAPTAINJOE.COM ANY COPYING OR ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADING AND PUBLISHING ON OTHER PLATFORMS WILL FOLLOW LEGAL CONSEQUENCES

Former iPhone Factory Worker Explains How They Keep New iPhones A Secret

03:14
While the US media scrambles to find out any minor details about future iPhone models, workers in China already know a lot about the device. Dejian Zeng, an NYU grad student who spent 6 weeks working undercover in a Pegatron iPhone factory in Shanghai, explains what the factory would do to prevent leaks as they transitioned into working on the iPhone 7. Following is a transcript of the video: "It’s impossible for workers to take photos or even carry some components out." Dejian Zeng spent 6 weeks working at a Pegatron iPhone factory in China. Here’s how they kept the iPhone 7 a secret. "Workers know how popular the iPhone is in China. And typically when we started producing the iPhone 7, a lot of workers think it’s very cool that they see the products that have not yet been published. In the workshop, we were originally producing the iPhone 6s, and during that time that we were in the workshop, they were already building up some facilities or infrastructure to build the assembly line for iPhone 7. And they had this big curtain that blocked everything. So even though we were in the same workshop, we saw nothing. And later on, we were moved to another sub-factory building to do work there for a while, because they need to rebuild the assembly line that we are working on also. After a while, we were moved back to the factory, and we had the new assembly line producing iPhone 7. We have a locker room. That’s where workers changed their clothes, put their phones, their keys, all their metals. We need to swipe our card, and they have facial recognition. After you get in, you wait in line to go through a metal detector. But that was during the time that I was producing iPhone 6s. When I was producing iPhone 7, they increased their security level. There were two metal detectors in the factories, and they also increased the sensitivity of it. Like, for example, some girls have some bras that have metals in it. All of a sudden, on that specific day, they couldn’t pass the security door, and they needed to go back and change everything. Inside the factories, any kind of metal is not allowed. So I don’t think anybody can bring a camera or something like that inside of the factories. But high-level managers — they’re able to bring their phone. So I’m not sure whether photos can get leaked by that. But every time when they need to go through the metal detectors, the security will ask those managers to press the button on their phone, so that they can see the screen. Because I think there are some cases where they bring an iPhone and put it in a case of a fake phone and just carried it out. A lot of the workers, on the first day they start producing it, we can tell that there’s no headphone jack there. And then we can see that they have two cameras. So those are some things that we can see and we can remember and we can tell the media later on. There are cameras in the workshop, in every assembly line. During the training, they told us that there are some cases where workers were trying to carry iPhones out of the factories and got caught, and they were being sent to the police. So when I was producing iPhone 6, I did see Apple come for audits. I think it was 2 or 3 times. And every time when they come, the manger in the factories got very nervous. They would tell us you need to follow the procedure and sit straight, and don’t talk. Later on, when we started producing iPhone 7, you could see Apple staff there every single day." How ATM Works

04:44
An automated teller machine (ATM) is an electronic telecommunications device that enables the clients of a financial institution to perform financial transactions without the need for a cashier, human clerk or bank teller. On most modern ATMs, the customer is identified by inserting a plastic ATM card with a magnetic stripe or a plastic smart card with a chip that contains a unique card number and some security information such as an expiration date or CVVC (CVV). Authentication is provided by the customer entering a personal identification number (PIN). Using an ATM, customers can access their bank accounts in order to make cash withdrawals, debit card cash advances, and check their account balances as well as purchase pre-paid mobile phone credit. If the currency being withdrawn from the ATM is different from that which the bank account is denominated in (e.g.: Withdrawing Japanese Yen from a bank account containing US Dollars), the money will be converted at an official wholesale exchange rate. Thus, ATMs often provide one of the best possible official exchange rates for foreign travelers, and are also widely used for this purpose. http://engineers-channel.blogspot.com/p/atm.html

That's Why Airplane Seats Are Almost Always Blue

11:04
Have you ever noticed how airplane seats are almost always blue, and have you ever wondered if there’s a special reason for that? We’re going to answer this and other popular plane-related questions and also help you pick the best seat aboard as a bonus. With the stress and apprehension that comes with traveling, especially by air, airlines understood that it’s important to calm passengers down and reassure them that everything’s gonna be alright. It turns out blue is the perfect color to send that message. As for materials, the seats can be upholstered with either faux leather or fabric. As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, like transatlantic ones, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin, so passengers won’t sweat, chafe, or experience any discomfort. Tracks on the floor of the aircraft allow rows of seats to be organized at the airline’s discretion, so companies take advantage of this in order to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. That’s why plane windows don’t line up with the seats. Most planes are painted white to save money on fuel. The heavier the plane is (and it gets heavier when painted), the more fuel it needs. The color white also reflects light better, which means the plane won’t overheat because of the sun’s rays. Plus, white makes it easier to notice cracks, leaks, and any other damage that needs to be fixed. The temperature onboard is kept close to freezing for a reason. Many airplane passengers get hypoxia, which is when a person is more likely to faint at high altitudes than on the ground. It happens when bodily tissues don’t get enough oxygen. To minimize the risk of it, airlines keep the temperature low. Music: Rondo Brothers - Special Ed https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Why are the seats blue? 0:50 Fabric or leather? 2:41 Why don’t plane windows line up with the seats? 3:53 Why are planes white? 4:53 Why is it so cold on planes? 6:07 Where do the pilots sleep? 7:27 Bonus: how to choose the best seat 8:40 SUMMARY -According to scientists, most people associate the color blue with reliability and safety, which is essential even for travelers who don’t suffer from aerophobia. Blue slows down your heart rate and relaxes tension. -As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin. Artificial leather works great for short flights. It’s extremely wearproof, and even spilled drinks don’t stain it. -Plane windows don’t line up with the seats because airlines care about profits and try to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. -Planes are white out of economy: paint can make a plane anywhere from 600-1,200 lbs heavier, and the heavier the aircraft is, the more fuel it needs. -To minimize the risk of passengers fainting, airlines keep the temperature and air pressure in the cabin really low. -On flights that are longer than 10½ hours, pilots take turns resting in private bunks for the crew. In case there’s no special rest area onboard or if the flight isn’t that long, pilots take a break in the seat rows within or near the cockpit or even in the passenger cabin. -If you don’t want to listen to the hum of the engine throughout your whole flight, then choose a seat closer to the airplane’s nose. If you’re tall, be sure to sit next to the emergency exit. Since the invention of the battery, there have been a pretty amazingly diverse number of battery types used with different sizes/shapes/voltages/storage capacities/etc., and also named a variety of things. This gave rise to the need for an industry wide standard, particularly as the lack of an international or even national standard during WWI was problematic for the military. Why UPS Trucks Don't Make Left Turns

01:17
While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, a huge corporation like UPS has proven since 2004 how avoiding left turns in its trucks can significantly increase its bottomline while reducing emissions and accidents. With nearly 100,000 trucks and hundreds of aircraft, UPS averages 15.8 million packages delivered daily worldwide. While an individual person may not save much by only making right turns, since UPS implemented a right turn policy in 2004, they have significantly increased profits while reducing emissions and accidents. UPS estimates the right-turn-heavy policy, combined with its routing software, shortens routes by 20.4 million miles and saves 10 million gallons of gas while delivering an additional 350,000 packages and reducing CO2 emissions by about 20,000 metric tons each year. UPS engineers noticed how waiting to turn left caused trucks to fall behind on their schedules, consume more gas, and increase the probability of accidents. Their software maps routes with only right-hand turns unless it's quicker or easier to proceed with a left-hand turn. A driver estimates they do about 90% right-hand turns. The television show Mythbusters tested the policy with one route using 8 left and 4 right turns, and another route using 1 left and 23 right turns. The UPS-like route was just over 1 mile and 9 minutes longer, but it reduced gas consumption from 6.8 to 4 pounds. UPS' software probably would've added one or two more left-hand turns to be more efficient on time while still saving gas.
