The Problem With Fast Trains: What Happened to Hovertrains?

10:50
In 1974, a French train sets a speed record, exceeding 250 miles per hour. But this train is unlike any other before it. Instead of rolling on train wheels, it hovers on a cushion of air. In the 1970’s hovertrains were seriously being considered the solution to slow, antiquated railways, which increasingly had to compete with new superhighways and even intercity air travel. Without the rolling resistance of train wheels, hovertrains promised greater efficiency and much higher speeds. By feeding high pressure air through lifting pads, hovertrains float on a cushion of air much like a hovercraft. One of the most widely known hovertrain prototypes was called the Aerotrain. Lead engineer Jean Bertin and his team in France, designed several versions, including one that could carry 80 passengers. The i80HV was powered by a turbofan sourced from an airliner, producing over twelve thousand pounds of thrust. At the front, a 400 horse power gas-turbine supplied high-pressure air to hover the twenty loaded train a quarter of an inch off its guideway. The British and Americans also experimented with hovertrain technology, incorporating the linear induction motor for improved efficiency. British research led to the development of the RTV-31 Tracked Hovercraft, and the American’s developed several prototypes, culminating in the development of the Urban Tracked Air Cushion Vehicle (UTACV). But like their counterpart the Maglev, Hovertrains failed to revolutionize rail. Hovertrains, Maglevs, or any other innovative alternative to rail has to compete with nearly a million miles of rail line already in existence. With stations and infrastructure built-out in nearly every city in the world. The limitations of conventional railways were overcome not a single innovative leap forward, but by incremental improvements. Existing rail networks were modernized with sections of track that could handle higher speeds. New signaling technologies were developed along with more advanced wheelsets. #Hovertrain #Aerotrain #TrackedHovercraft #YesterdaysFuture The first 200 viewers to sign up at https://brilliant.org/mustard will get 20% off their annual premium subscription Want to help Mustard grow? Where Did A Million Chinese Millionaires Come From?

26:20
The Ka-Ching Dynasty! - China. From communism to capitalism, a new generation of very young, very rich people have emerged, but where did they come from? Subscribe to journeyman for daily uploads: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures The economic transformation of China has been electrifying. But with Europe teetering and the US plodding, can the biggest tiger of all keep on roaring? China's super-rich certainly think they can. Outside a private Beijing nightclub Porsches, Maseratis and Ferraris compete for space. Inside the club is packed with the children of China's super-rich enjoying a 'palace' themed party. China now has almost a million millionaires, six hundred billionaires, and the numbers keep growing at a staggering rate. As a reporter for the Hurun Report rich-list points out, they are a force to be reckoned with: "certainly we need to be aware of and understand this group." Even more striking is the bravado of China's super-rich, who feel that they can keep going from strength to strength. "I met an entrepreneur last week who said that if all goes to plan, in ten years time his business will be ten times the size it is now". The focus is certainly on quick growth. Current projections say that in ten years time half the world's billionaires will come from China. While there are warnings signs that the economic woes of Europe and the US will hit China, China's super-rich don't seem concerned. For some the hope is that the Chinese market will pick up the slack. For others, who have only known the good times, anything else is unthinkable: "if I have any spare money I buy sports cars." That's Why Airplane Seats Are Almost Always Blue

11:04
Have you ever noticed how airplane seats are almost always blue, and have you ever wondered if there’s a special reason for that? We’re going to answer this and other popular plane-related questions and also help you pick the best seat aboard as a bonus. With the stress and apprehension that comes with traveling, especially by air, airlines understood that it’s important to calm passengers down and reassure them that everything’s gonna be alright. It turns out blue is the perfect color to send that message. As for materials, the seats can be upholstered with either faux leather or fabric. As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, like transatlantic ones, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin, so passengers won’t sweat, chafe, or experience any discomfort. Tracks on the floor of the aircraft allow rows of seats to be organized at the airline’s discretion, so companies take advantage of this in order to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. That’s why plane windows don’t line up with the seats. Most planes are painted white to save money on fuel. The heavier the plane is (and it gets heavier when painted), the more fuel it needs. The color white also reflects light better, which means the plane won’t overheat because of the sun’s rays. Plus, white makes it easier to notice cracks, leaks, and any other damage that needs to be fixed. The temperature onboard is kept close to freezing for a reason. Many airplane passengers get hypoxia, which is when a person is more likely to faint at high altitudes than on the ground. It happens when bodily tissues don’t get enough oxygen. To minimize the risk of it, airlines keep the temperature low. Music: Rondo Brothers - Special Ed https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Why are the seats blue? 0:50 Fabric or leather? 2:41 Why don’t plane windows line up with the seats? 3:53 Why are planes white? 4:53 Why is it so cold on planes? 6:07 Where do the pilots sleep? 7:27 Bonus: how to choose the best seat 8:40 SUMMARY -According to scientists, most people associate the color blue with reliability and safety, which is essential even for travelers who don’t suffer from aerophobia. Blue slows down your heart rate and relaxes tension. -As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin. Artificial leather works great for short flights. It’s extremely wearproof, and even spilled drinks don’t stain it. -Plane windows don’t line up with the seats because airlines care about profits and try to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. -Planes are white out of economy: paint can make a plane anywhere from 600-1,200 lbs heavier, and the heavier the aircraft is, the more fuel it needs. -To minimize the risk of passengers fainting, airlines keep the temperature and air pressure in the cabin really low. -On flights that are longer than 10½ hours, pilots take turns resting in private bunks for the crew. In case there’s no special rest area onboard or if the flight isn’t that long, pilots take a break in the seat rows within or near the cockpit or even in the passenger cabin. -If you don’t want to listen to the hum of the engine throughout your whole flight, then choose a seat closer to the airplane’s nose. If you’re tall, be sure to sit next to the emergency exit. Making Artificial Earthquakes with a Four-Tonne Steel Ball

03:34
In Göttingen, Germany, there's a four-tonne steel ball that can be raised up a 14-metre tower -- and then dropped in less than two seconds, crashing back to earth. It makes tiny, artificial earthquakes: here's why. Thanks to all the team at Wiechert'sche Erdbebenwarte Göttingen! You can find out more about them here: https://www.erdbebenwarte.de/ Three things I had to cut out of this video, because they didn't quite fit into the story or because I couldn't film them: The reason the steel ball survived two world wars is because the university's records listed it by use as a "rock-ball", not by composition as a "steel ball" - so no-one melted it down for weaponry. The observatory team refill that pit every year to make the ground flat, and the ball just digs a hole again. The rock's just being compressed underneath. They joke that, somewhere in Australia, there's a slowly growing hill... And finally, the ground steams for a little while after the ball hits: it gets rather warm... REASON WHY PLANES ARE PAINTED WHITE! Explained by CAPTAIN JOE

05:37
INSTAGRAM FLYWITHCAPTAINJOE: https://goo.gl/TToDlg MY WEBSITE: https://goo.gl/KGTSWK ►STAY INFORMED: https://goo.gl/ByheuP ◄ NEW FACEBOOK PAGE: https://goo.gl/heUKGb ————————————————————————————————— ▼▼My FLIGHT-KIT I highly recommend for you guys▼▼ MY HEADSET: https://amzn.to/2CrTrzz MY SUNGLASSES: https://amzn.to/2VY6FNo MY PILOT BAG: https://amzn.to/2DiWKux Company iPad: https://amzn.to/2W1zM2n ▼▼The VIDEO EQUIPMENT I use in my studio and outdoors▼▼ MY CAMERA: https://amzn.to/2T1VK3g LIGHTING: https://amzn.to/2szSRv4 IN-FLIGHT RECORDINGS: https://amzn.to/2VY7A0g —————————————————————————————————— Why are most planes painted white? When a brand-new plane rolls out of the factory, they are very often painted in a greenish anti-corrosive paint, so that the plane can fly or be moved to the final assembly line and paint shop. Therefore they are nicknamed the "green jets" and are a rare sight for plane spotters. But once the plane arrives at the paint shop, let´s take an Airbus A380 as an example, it takes approximately 34 painters, working in three shifts each day for fifteen days to wash, prepare and paint the plane. After 6000 working hours, they´ve roughly applied 1100 kilograms (2425 lbs) of paint onto the plane. And that procedure needs to be repeated every seven to eight years, depending on the use of the plane and cleaning schedule. After applying a minimum of two layers, the plane gains a few more pounds to its dry operating weight, and even more, if a third more colourful layer is sprayed onto it such as the company logo etc. Therefore putting fancy detailed liveries onto planes is not only costly at first, but also increases it´s operating cost. For example, a Boeing 737 paint job can be as heavy as 500 kilograms which equals 6 passengers who aren´t paying for their flight and increasing the fuel consumption. See more about it in the video :) BIG THANK YOU TO TLV1979 who provided me with this amazing picutres, please check out his great collection of aviation pictures at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/25695066@N00/ Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe Outro Song: Joakim Karud & Dyalla - Wish you were here https://goo.gl/kJ9pef ALL COPYRIGHTS TO THIS VIDEO ARE OWNED BY FLYWITHCAPTAINJOE.COM ANY COPYING OR ILLEGALLY DOWNLOADING AND PUBLISHING ON OTHER PLATFORMS WILL FOLLOW LEGAL CONSEQUENCES

To the average buyer, airline ticket prices appear to fluctuate without reason. But behind the process is actually the science of dynamic pricing, which has less to do with cost and more to do with artificial intelligence. Here's Why the C-5 Galaxy Is Such a Badass Plane

11:09
The largest military transport in the U.S.'s arsenal is also one of the largest planes in the world. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the aptly named C-5 Galaxy, and it's been five decades worth celebrating. With the ability to swallow 50-ton main battle tanks and deposit them on another continent, the Galaxy is an essential part of the global logistics system. As Air Force historian John Leland noted, the C-5 "symbolized the size, power, might and majesty of the United States Air Force," and it still does to this day. For a half-century, the Galaxy has kept America’s armed forces, allies, and far-flung scientists well supplied in the most remote corners of the Earth, and it will continue to do the job for the foreseeable future. An automated teller machine (ATM) is an electronic telecommunications device that enables the clients of a financial institution to perform financial transactions without the need for a cashier, human clerk or bank teller. On most modern ATMs, the customer is identified by inserting a plastic ATM card with a magnetic stripe or a plastic smart card with a chip that contains a unique card number and some security information such as an expiration date or CVVC (CVV). Authentication is provided by the customer entering a personal identification number (PIN). Using an ATM, customers can access their bank accounts in order to make cash withdrawals, debit card cash advances, and check their account balances as well as purchase pre-paid mobile phone credit. If the currency being withdrawn from the ATM is different from that which the bank account is denominated in (e.g.: Withdrawing Japanese Yen from a bank account containing US Dollars), the money will be converted at an official wholesale exchange rate. Thus, ATMs often provide one of the best possible official exchange rates for foreign travelers, and are also widely used for this purpose. http://engineers-channel.blogspot.com/p/atm.html
