Cost Saving Tips for Dimensional Weight Shipping. More info: http://datexcorp.com/1/dimensional-weight-shipping Companies using FedEx and UPS will be affected by the upcoming change in shipping rate calculation. You can influence how much this impacts your business. In this video we will share a few tips on how to reduce the financial impacts of dimensional weight shipping rates. While this change may seem as if there are stormy times ahead, it is also a great opportunity to take a deep dive into your business and make some improvements. One way you can reduce the financial impact of dimensional weight shipping is by optimizing your packaging. This will reduce the amount of large package fees your logistics provider charges. Large packages are defined as those which have a combined length and girth of over 130 inches. Avoid these fees by eliminating excess use of packing materials and unnecessarily large containers. Your business can also reduce associated shipping cost by providing package dimensions while manifesting. This allows you to properly determine shipping fees for your customers and reduce charge-back fees from your carrier for package size discrepancies. Testing out new packaging options is also a great way to optimize your packaging processes and reduce shipping costs. Now that shipping rates are based on volume rather than simply weight, replacing small boxes with padded envelopes or using more size appropriate box sizes can significantly reduce costs. Using cartonization software can result in significant savings. Cartonization software works with your warehouse management system and executes during the shipping process. It determines if the shipment will be split into one or more containers and then determines the correct cartonization strategy. The system considers the dimensions, weight, fragility, position requirements and other factors when evaluating the proper container, placement and packaging materials. Using cartonization can produce dramatic savings in labor and materials for your business and result in decreased order returns and damages. Another useful software tool is shipping management software, sometimes referred to as manifesting software. Shipping management software integrates parcel information with carriers. The software provides current rates for carriers such as UPS, FedEx and others. Using shipping management software, your company will be able to print out carrier compliant labels and documentation and have instant access to tracking information. Your employees will be able to use the shipping management software search for the lowest rates and method of shipment. This is a great tool to have in your arsenal to combat increasing shipping rates, fees and delays. Whether you choose to use these tips, cartonization and shipping management software or other means, your business can have more control over shipping fees.

One of the best evenings plane spotting ever. There was a surreal feel in the air and it was an evening I won't forget. I've uploaded a couple of videos from this trip last year but I purposely left you waiting for the best videos, and now they're here. East Midlands Airport (EMA/EGNX) is a big cargo airport in the UK, with numerous cargo flights arriving every evening, and then departing in the morning. So when my Dad and I went up to East Mids on the 20th/21st July 2013, we got the evening arrivals, spotting from about 16:00 until 21:30, then got the early morning departures from about 05:00 to 06:30. MORNING DEPARTURES: http://youtu.be/Enbjsf4WSpg All the cargo flights arrive within a couple of hours, making filming there really exciting! During the evening hours East Midlands gets hectic, with tens of flights arriving and many wanting to depart too. We absolutely loved it, and seeing as this was filmed back in Summer 2013, we are looking to go back soon! This video begins as I typically like to start them, with a nice intro including a view of the spotting location in which all the clips were filmed. Then straight into the cargo landings! - : UPS 767-300 Jet2 737-300 Swiftair EMB120 Star Air Maersk 767-200 Icelandair Cargo 757-200 Star Air Maersk 767-200 Atlantic Airlines BAE ATP DHL A300-600 TNT 737-400 DHL 757-200 DHL A300-600 (Retro Livery); the last arrival we caught before heading back because the lighting was deteriorating, 21:30pm. There wasn't much special that we hadn't already filmed after this arrival anyway:) The brilliant variety of airlines and aircraft we saw on this trip, plus the all around epic spotting location meant East Midlands is a must re-visit in our eyes. Dimensional weight rates changes 2014 | FedEx and UPS Changes. More info: http://datexcorp.com/1/dimensional-weight-shipping/ A change is coming soon. If your business uses UPS or FedEx for shipping, you will be directly affected. It is now more important than ever to understand how to calculate the shipping rates so that you can make adjustments in your business to meet these rising costs before this impacts you and your customers. Both FedEx and UPS will be implementing dimensional weight shipping rates. In the past, dimensional weight shipping rates were only used for packages over 3 cubic feet. Now these carriers will apply dimensional weight shipping rates for all US ground services. According to industry shipping experts, this is likely to lead to double digit cost hikes for shippers when annual rate increases are factored into the equation. Here is how you can calculate dimensional weight for any package, no matter the size or shape. First to determine dimensional weight you need to measure the length, width and height of the package in inches at the longest points. You will need to include any bulges or irregularities in your measurements and round to the nearest whole number. Next you multiply length, height and width. This will give you the cubic size in inches. Next, you need to know the dimensional weight factor, also known as the DIM factor The DIM factor is different for domestic ground shipments and international air shipments and is subject to change. To assure the accuracy of your calculation, be sure to verify the DIM factor from the shipping carrier you choose before finalizing your calculation. The cubic size is then divided by the DIM factor to determine the dimensional weight in pounds. This weight is then rounded to the nearest whole pound. From there, compare the packages actual weight to its dimensional weight. The higher of the two is the billable weight. The dimensional weight factor will vary depending on the shipment destination. If your package is being shipped somewhere within the continental United States the dimensional weight factor is 166. For packages being shipped internationally, the factor is 139. This differentiation accounts for additional shipping costs related to longer travel distances for international shipments.

Across the country, businesses, government agencies and other organizations that operate vehicle fleets turn to natural gas vehicles (NGVs) for their transportation needs. Natural gas is one of the cleanest, most affordable fuels available today, and vehicle makers offer more NGVs every year. UPS, the world's largest package-delivery and logistics company, operates one of the nation's largest NGV fleets. Its iconic brown delivery trucks are instantly recognizable, but what many people don't know is that UPS is truly committed to the environment. The company has used alternative-fuel vehicles including NGVs to transport packages for years, and in 2014 most of the new tractor-trailers UPS puts on the road will be powered by natural gas. Longtime employee J.D. Baker, who works at the UPS facility in Ontario, California -- one of the first UPS facilities to adopt NGVs -- says their NGVs are reliable, get great mileage and provide plenty of power on the region's notorious mountain roads like The Grapevine and the Tejon Pass. "They're also a great conversation piece," J.D. told us. "People in the community see 'Natural Gas Vehicle' on the side and ask us about it." By using more natural gas, UPS reduces emissions, while taking advantage of an affordable fuel that powers a massive delivery fleet traveling thousands of miles every week. In this video, J.D. explains why he's proud of his company's commitment to the environment as well as the communities it serves and how NGVs are an important way of showing that commitment. Using natural gas to deliver for America? That's something to think about. For more information about the positive impact of natural gas, visit http://www.thinkaboutit.org.
