Most people presume that world hunger is caused by a lack of food. But Esther Ndichu, the humanitarian supply chain director at UPS, argues that the real issue is logistics. She points out that food often rots just miles from the neediest people and that farmers often can’t get goods to market. By fixing the "last mile," she shows that hunger can be solved in our lifetime. TED@UPS was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the UPS community. On July 29, UPS issued its 2014 Sustainability Report, the company’s annual compendium of environmental, social, and employee stewardship activities. UPS is achieving carbon and fuel goals through modernizing its air fleet; using data analytics to increase the precision of departures, arrivals, taxi times, payload, and fuel uplift; reducing the number of engines in operation during taxi; and lowering flight speeds without compromising arrival times. The report also highlighted the reduction impact of the 767 winglet program; engine washes; electronic flight manuals for pilots; and the newer, lighter fire-resistant containers. From the 19-year Hospital Records and Med School back catalogue we draw from the core, proving just how deep the roots go in drum & bass of past and present. With influences of breakbeat, dub and reggae, jungle is at the foundation of some of Hospital’s most prominent dance-floor prowlers. In over 46 tracks, Nu:Tone keeps the energy high, moving through the vocal chop-ups of Logistics and Danny Byrd, the deep basslines of S.P.Y and Total Science and right through to the broken beats of A-Sides and Krakota. Not to mention the likes of Calibre, Commix, Icicle, D*Minds and Detail also inspired by the drum & bass origin, bringing the junglist hype right to the forefront. This time round the carnival horns are calling, the elastic bass-lines drawing and there's a full return of the reverb. Get ready for the rumble of “Fast Jungle Music”.

The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land Session Three: Spatial Logistics Jesse LeCavalier Recorded September 26, 2014 The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land was a symposium on rethinking land and its value in light of climate change organized by The Architectural League and co-sponsored by The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design in September 2014. The Spatial Logistics panel invited an industrial real estate developer and two designers and academics to unpack the spatial dimensions of the sometimes hidden networks of logistics and debate their consequences — the good, bad, and unknown — for design and society. In this presentation, Jesse LeCavalier traces the spaces and invisible networks that circulate goods, people, and resources created by logistics. He dissects a recent advertising campaign by United Parcel Service (UPS) — “Logistics makes the world work better” — to understand how supply chain logistics “tries to deny space” and collapse distance (and therefore time) in pursuit of improved efficiency, lower costs, and increased profits. Drawing from his extensive research into the architecture and logistics of Walmart, he tours the sequence of trucking, unloading, sorting, distribution, floor display, and purchasing that determines our consumption of goods. He concludes with a revision to the UPS advertising slogan: “Logistics makes the world.” Jesse LeCavalier is working on a book about the architecture and logistics of Walmart, forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press. He is a member of Co + LeCavalier and an assistant professor of architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he coordinates the first year design studio. The Five Thousand Pound Life (5KL) is an initiative of The Architectural League on new ways of thinking, talking, and acting on architecture, climate change, and our economic future.

When the first cases of Ebola were reported in West Africa in 2014, the U.S. government mounted a comprehensive plan to keep it from spreading. Called Operation United Assistance, the strategy called for the U.S. military to support the civilian led agencies in the most affected areas of that country. Critical to the plan is the Air Mobility Forces; the logistics of airlifting equipment, supplies and personnel in and out of the country… and the Pentagon called on a UPSer to command it. Click on the video to see and hear the details of the incredible service of UPS Captain Jeff Barnson and the sacrifice of all those that serve in our military.
