Most people presume that world hunger is caused by a lack of food. But Esther Ndichu, the humanitarian supply chain director at UPS, argues that the real issue is logistics. She points out that food often rots just miles from the neediest people and that farmers often can’t get goods to market. By fixing the "last mile," she shows that hunger can be solved in our lifetime. TED@UPS was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the UPS community. Jointly produced by TED and UPS, the event put a spotlight on ideas, projects and insights that will contribute to the importance of pushing forward through obstacles. UPS, world's largest express carrier and package delivery company, expand their new services, express delivery and contrast logistics services in Myanmar on Thursday. UPS started its operations in the country in 2014, offering the said services, as well as in bound and out bound air and Ocean freight services. Deputy Chief of Mission, from US Embassy Yangon, Virginia Murray said in her speech that this expansion demonstrates the interest and potential of Myanmar business by US businesses. According to the reference from UPS, foreign direct investment doubled last fiscal year, reach US$8 billion and total trade is expected to grow 8% this year to US$30 billion. Aside from expansion of services, UPS and US AID launched last year the US-ASEAN Business Alliance for competitive SMEs, a multi-year public private partnership to provide capacity building to SMEs to help them join global supply chains.

The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land Session Three: Spatial Logistics Jesse LeCavalier Recorded September 26, 2014 The Five Thousand Pound Life: Land was a symposium on rethinking land and its value in light of climate change organized by The Architectural League and co-sponsored by The Cooper Union Institute for Sustainable Design in September 2014. The Spatial Logistics panel invited an industrial real estate developer and two designers and academics to unpack the spatial dimensions of the sometimes hidden networks of logistics and debate their consequences — the good, bad, and unknown — for design and society. In this presentation, Jesse LeCavalier traces the spaces and invisible networks that circulate goods, people, and resources created by logistics. He dissects a recent advertising campaign by United Parcel Service (UPS) — “Logistics makes the world work better” — to understand how supply chain logistics “tries to deny space” and collapse distance (and therefore time) in pursuit of improved efficiency, lower costs, and increased profits. Drawing from his extensive research into the architecture and logistics of Walmart, he tours the sequence of trucking, unloading, sorting, distribution, floor display, and purchasing that determines our consumption of goods. He concludes with a revision to the UPS advertising slogan: “Logistics makes the world.” Jesse LeCavalier is working on a book about the architecture and logistics of Walmart, forthcoming from the University of Minnesota Press. He is a member of Co + LeCavalier and an assistant professor of architecture at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he coordinates the first year design studio. The Five Thousand Pound Life (5KL) is an initiative of The Architectural League on new ways of thinking, talking, and acting on architecture, climate change, and our economic future.

Today, I want to tell you a story. It’s about a sleeping giant that wakes up very hungry and decides to eat its partner. But, unlike the praying mantis, there won’t even be any sex before death… We live in an age of disruptive technology. Where Uber can become the world’s biggest taxi company without owning any cars and Airbnb can become the world’s biggest hotel chain without owning any bricks and mortar. Unless you’ve been living in a hermetically sealed underground bunker these last five years, you’ll know that the only growth area in shopping these days is online. Who’d ever have imagined that people would buy shoes and clothes based on minute images on a screen without trying them on? What I find amazing is that people think it’s less hassle to order three pairs of shoes, try them all on and send two back than it is just to go to the shoe shop in the first place. And of course it creates a whole new set of demands on the logistics that deliver and collect all these packages. And that’s the biggest issue for the retailer. It all boils down to the customer experience. However fancy your website, however slick your one click check out might be, it can all fall apart if the post office or the courier screws up the delivery. As happened to Amazon last Christmas. It’s one thing having a late delivery on something you’ve ordered for yourself. But what if it’s a present for someone you love? The only good Christmas present is one that’s there to be opened on Christmas morning. If it arrives three days late, she may already have sent the dear John text that kills your beautiful relationship. Not the customer experience Amazon were hoping to give you. So they've taken matters into their own hands. Amazon’s massive distribution centres are already like something out of a sci-fi movie. They’ve got a hundred and twenty of these mega centres filled with orange Kiva robots that long ago replaced human pickers and packers. But now Amazon are taking their ownership of the logistics process to the last mile, all the way to your front door. Their big, hairy audacious goal? Same day delivery. Maybe even one hour delivery. That’s what you call instant gratification. They’ve already disrupted cloud computing with Amazon Web Services. If you’re a shareholder in Royal Mail, UPS or Fedex, it’s time to start worrying. The cost of deliveries is rising faster than sales, causing Amazon to lose one point two billion pounds on distribution in their most recent quarter. They’ve launched Prime Now in twenty cities including London, with new delivery hubs to support them. They’ve hired a network of freelance delivery drivers in the Amazon Flex programme while in America they’ve ordered thousands of truck trailers to take goods from the main distribution centres to smaller local sorting offices. Will customers pay enough for rapid delivery to cover all these new costs? Or, like me, would they rather wait a few days and get free delivery? Is this a real attempt by Amazon to take over from the big courier companies? Or just a way of flexing their muscles to get faster service and lower prices? Amazon deliveries already account for four per cent of UPS’s overall business, around two billion dollars worth of revenue. I imagine you get your own account manager when you spend that much. But I imagine the meetings might be getting a little bit tetchy when UPS realise that their biggest customer is starting to steal their lunch. If you’re betting on the existing players reaping all the benefits of delivering the online shopping boom, be very careful out there!

Through the centuries, the port of Rotterdam has grown into a port and industrial complex that stretches more than 50 kilometres. Get to know Rotterdam under three headings. 00:00 Access to Europe Rotterdam is the gateway to Europe, a trade hub. A port that can tackle any logistics assignment, is accessible for all modes of transport, and can handle, store or process any product. Over 500 million European consumers rely on the port of Rotterdam. An important responsibility, which it discharges together with the satellite ports of Dordrecht and Moerdijk and the network of terminals that extends throughout the Netherlands. 02:00 Knowledge and Expertise The location is perfect: directly on the sea and no locks. But Rotterdam has more to offer. This is the place where they devise ways of making logistics processes even faster and more efficient. The IT system Portbase is an example of this, but the customs service also plays a role here. Maasvlakte 2 was built so that Rotterdam could remain the port of the future. As a result, Rotterdam is increasingly not only the first, but also the last port of call. It can also handle increasing volumes of export cargo. Sustainability plays a key role in this. 05:00 Human labour Thirty thousand vessels a year call at the port of Rotterdam. They are attracted by the knowledge that they will be handled professionally. It is the job of the nautical service providers to ensure that all vessels can sail into and out of the port safely. This must be done smoothly and without any hold-ups. Set ups shot of Lieutenant General Ken Keen, Deputy Commander of the US Southern Command ++MUTE++ 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Lieutenant General Ken Keen, Deputy Commander of the US Southern Command: "We''ve been very fortunate that there haven''t been any security issues but obviously working with the government of Haiti and national police we will continue to do that (monitor the situation). My message to the people of Haiti is that we need a safe and secure environment to be the most effective we can to deliver these humanitarian supplies so I plead to them that they work to that end and it will be in the interests of everybody" 7. Workers sorting aid boxes at airport 8. Worker loading aid boxes into vehicle STORYLINE: US relief force asserted its control over the Port-au-Prince''s airport on Friday as aid supplies continued to pour in for the survivors of Haiti''s devastating earthquake amid fears of unrest as the nation faced its fourth day of desperation. More than 100 paratroopers of the US 82nd Airborne Division arrived at Toussaint L''Ouverture International Airport overnight, boosting the US military presence to several hundred on the ground here, and others arrived off Port-au-Prince harbour on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. Helicopters had been ferrying water and other relief supplies off the Vinson into the airport, US military officials said. Within hours, an 82nd Airborne rapid response unit was handing out food, water and medical supplies outside the airport, a helicopter lifted off with water to distribute and a reconnaissance chopper went searching for drop zones around the capital to move out more aid. Governments and government agencies from around the world have so far pledged about 400 (m) million US dollars worth of aid, including 100 (m) million US dollars from the United States. However more and more, the focus has fallen on the daunting challenge of getting the aid to survivors. The global helping hand has been slowed by the capital''s damaged seaport and an airport that turned away civilian aid planes for eight hours on Thursday because of a lack of space and fuel. A stream of US military cargo planes landed Friday, but they had to circle for an hour before getting clearance to land because the quake destroyed the control tower and radar control, and the US military was using emergency procedures. Aid workers have been blocked by debris on inadequate roads and by survivors gathered in the open out of fear of aftershocks from the 7.0-magnitude quake and re-entering unstable buildings. United Nations peacekeepers patrolling the capital said people''s anger was rising that aid hasn''t been distributed quickly, and warned aid convoys to add security to guard against looting. The US Commander on the ground Lieutenant General Ken Keen pleaded with Haitian''s on Friday to maintain order. "We need a safe and secure environment to be the most effective we can to deliver these humanitarian supplies" he said at the airport on Friday. At the Pentagon, the top U.S. military officer said up to 10 thousand US troops will be in Haiti or off its shores by Monday to help distribute aid and prevent potential rioting among desperate survivors. Pockets of looting have flared across the capital with reports of small bands of young men and teenagers with machetes roaming downtown streets helped themselves to whatever they could find in wrecked homes. However some 6,000 tons of food aid was to be distributed shortly in Haiti, a UN spokeswoman said Friday, adding that reports that UN warehouses in Haiti had been looted were overblown.
