Another day another #deliverydrone. This time, real world point to point deliveries in European weather. Last week UPS announced a partnership with Zipline to trial medical delivery flights in Rwanda. DHL are already out there doing it with their Parcelcopter tilt-rotor VTOL system. DHL Parcel has successfully concluded a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. The trial run, part of a larger research and innovation project, was conducted between January and March 2016 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. It represents the first time worldwide that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. Private customers in Reit im Winkl and up on the Winklmoosalm plateau were invited to test out the specially developed Packstations, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. During the three month trial period, they could simply insert their shipments into the Skyport to initiate automated shipment and delivery per Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. As part of the trial, the technically upgraded vehicle was able to deal with heavier loads, longer distances and delivery to an alpine region notable for its geographical and meteorological challenges. The first task was to master the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the test area. With that achieved, the DHL Parcelcopter then performed a series of flawless flights. Each round trip from valley to plateau at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level covered eight kilometers of flight. The drone’s cargo was typically either sporting goods or urgently needed medicines and it arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of take-off. The same trip by car takes more than 30 minutes during winter. UPS Airlines Flight 6 was a cargo flight operated by UPS Airlines. On September 3, 2010, a Boeing 747-400 flying the route between Dubai International Airport and Cologne Bonn Airport developed an in-flight fire, with the fumes and subsequent crash resulting in the death of the two crew members. The aircraft had departed Dubai International earlier, but returned after reporting smoke in the cockpit. It was the first fatal air crash for UPS Airlines. The crash caused an examination of safety procedures protecting airliners from cockpit smoke. Disclaimer: Boring Video. I purchased a laptop from Best Buy and this is how the outside box appeared when it was shipped to my parents house. Yay!! The odd thing is that it says "If the seal is broken, please do not open and contact seller about shipment" Alas, I was very scared and disappointed at how the package was so banged up. The laptop inside was an asus T300 Chi which I bought for $378.99 on sale as an open box item off ebay.

Source: http://www.stattimes.com/index.php/supply-chain-ups-test-drone-for-urgent-commercial-delivery/ Sept 26, 2016: Logistics giant UPS has begun testing the use of drones to make commercial deliveries of packages to remote or difficult-to-access locations, working together with drone-maker CyPhy Works. Testing began on last Thursday when the companies staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to Children’s Island, which is about three miles off the Atlantic coast. The CyPhy drone used in the test is the Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications (PARC) system. The battery-powered drone flies itself, so very little user training is required. It is extremely durable, has night vision and features secure communications that cannot be intercepted or disrupted. UPS and CyPhy flew the PARC from Beverly to Children’s Island to test the viability of using the drone to make a time-critical delivery. In the mock scenario, the drone successfully carried an asthma inhaler to a child at a camp on the island, which is not reachable by automobile. The drone flight advances an investment made by The UPS Strategic Enterprise Fund in CyPhy to gather information about drone uses and capabilities. “Our focus is on real-world applications that benefit our customers,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. “We think drones offer a great solution to deliver to hard-to-reach locations in urgent situations where other modes of transportation are not readily available.”

UPS Delivery Man Saves San Diego Teen's Life After Pickup Truck Collapses UPS Delivery Man Saves San Diego Teen's Life After Pickup Truck Collapses UPS Delivery Man Saves San Diego Teen's Life After Pickup Truck Collapses A California teen is lucky to be alive after getting pinned beneath a truck that collapsed on his head, according to FOX5 San Diego. Cameron King, 17, was working on a truck when a jack slid out from underneath it, dropping the truck on his head and shoulder. Using all the strength he could muster, Cameron fought against the massive weight of the truck. Video from the incident shows a neighbor and a UPS driver scrambling to free him. Rescuers said if the truck had fallen on Cameron an inch over in one direction or another, he could have died. "The truck was on top of his head. I was pretty surprised," said firefighter, Rich Rinker. "I saw the tire marks on the side of his face and swelling. He's a tough kid." Cameron said the near-death experience has helped him focus on what's really important. "I can't tell you how happy I am to be at school right now and to see all your faces and I get to say that I'm the luckiest man alive," Cameron said.

United Parcel Service announced that it has started testing the use of drones for emergency deliveries of medical supplies this week with a flight in rural Massachusetts. The company is hoping for federal approval of drones as a regular delivery option. The drone successfully delivered a small package from Beverly, located about 25 miles northeast of Boston, to Children's Island, a summer camp for children three miles off the Atlantic coast. It took about 8 minutes total. Earlier this year UPS announced it was backing a start-up using drones in Rwanda to transport life-saving blood supplies and vaccines. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/domesticNews/~3/Ad6ceBgEmtk/us-united-parcel-drones-delivery-idUSKCN11T1BZ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Business using http://wochit.com

This UPS driver was delivering an Amazon package for us late at night; he couldn't get through the gate to our courtyard so he had to leave the package. Rather than leave the package outside the gate where it could be stolen or drop or throw it over the gate and risk damaging the product like some other delivery services have done, he looked for the best way to gently deliver the package. I wanted to share this with all of you leading into the holiday season... this is the kind of service I get every time I use UPS (which is quite often).

A man who posed as a UPS delivery driver and three others are wanted in a violent robbery, caught in part on camera, according to Houston police. The robbery occurred on Nov. 22 around 8:40 p.m. local time at a residence on Willers Way in Houston, Texas, police said. A surveillance camera outside the home captured part of the incident, according to police. In the surveillance footage, one suspect -- clad in a UPS jacket and brown baseball cap, and carrying a package -- is seen approaching the door to the residence. Police said the man rang the doorbell, claiming he needed a signature for the package. After the homeowner opens the door, the surveillance footage appears to show the man forcing his way into the home. Three other suspects brandishing guns and wearing hoodies or masks then appear and also enter the home. Upon entering, police said the suspects assaulted a man inside the residence with a pistol. At some point during the struggle, a shot was fired, though no one was struck, police said. The man was later transported to a local hospital for severe neck and head injuries, police said. Two women inside the house were able to grab two small children and lock themselves in closets to stay safe, according to police. The suspects stole several pieces of jewelry and collectible firearms before fleeing the scene in a getaway car, police said. Authorities are cautioning homeowners in the area to not open the door if they don’t recognize their regular delivery person.
