Last week UPS announced a partnership with Zipline to trial medical delivery flights in Rwanda. DHL are already out there doing it with their Parcelcopter tilt-rotor VTOL system. DHL Parcel has successfully concluded a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. The trial run, part of a larger research and innovation project, was conducted between January and March 2016 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. It represents the first time worldwide that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. Private customers in Reit im Winkl and up on the Winklmoosalm plateau were invited to test out the specially developed Packstations, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. During the three month trial period, they could simply insert their shipments into the Skyport to initiate automated shipment and delivery per Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. As part of the trial, the technically upgraded vehicle was able to deal with heavier loads, longer distances and delivery to an alpine region notable for its geographical and meteorological challenges. The first task was to master the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the test area. With that achieved, the DHL Parcelcopter then performed a series of flawless flights. Each round trip from valley to plateau at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level covered eight kilometers of flight. The drone’s cargo was typically either sporting goods or urgently needed medicines and it arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of take-off. The same trip by car takes more than 30 minutes during winter. On September 3, 2010, a Boeing 747-400 flying the route between Dubai International Airport and Cologne Bonn Airport developed an in-flight fire, with the fumes and subsequent crash resulting in the death of the two crew members. The aircraft had departed Dubai International earlier, but returned after reporting smoke in the cockpit. It was the first fatal air crash for UPS Airlines. The crash caused an examination of safety procedures protecting airliners from cockpit smoke. Was waiting for UPS to pickup up a package return to amazon.com all morning. All of a sudden I get an email from UPS stating that they attempted to make the pickup, but no one was home. But I was here all morning! So I checked my home security cameras and caught the UPS delivery man pulling up in front of my house, sitting there for a few seconds and then driving away. He never even attempted to come to my door!

Just after 230am Wednesday an 18-wheeler car hauler was southbound on i-45 north of Huntsville near FM 1696. That’s when his truck shook violently. As the driver pulled to the shoulder and got out he realized he had an 80,000 pound UPS truck attached to his trailer. Almost all of the vehicles on the car hauler were pushed forward and some were crushed. Walker County EMS responded to the scene and the 58-year-old driver of the UPS truck, who was from Keller, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene. I-45 was closed until just after 7am as the road was cleared and DPS investigated the crash. At this time ,DPS does not know why the UPS truck ran into the other truck but hope the Black Box onboard will yield some answers. As the scene was being investigated, a driver approaching the scene had a medical emergency and slammed into a Huntsville Police car. There were no injuries.

CHILDREN’S ISLAND, MASSACHUSETTS — Package delivery company UPS partnered with drone-maker CyPhy Works to conduct a test delivery using a drone last Thursday. The drone used in the test delivery was CyPhy Works’ Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications system (PARC). It flew three miles over the Atlantic Ocean from Beverly, Massachusetts to Children’s Island, where it successfully delivered an asthma inhaler to a child at the camp. The PARC drone is battery-powered and equipped with night vision. It also features secure communications system, preventing information from being intercepted or disrupted. “Drone technology used in this way can save lives and deliver products and services to places that are difficult to reach by traditional transit infrastructures, ” Helen Greiner, the founder and chief technology officer of CyPhy Works said in a press release. Greiner told NBC49.com that the drones are not going to replace delivery trucks. The United States Federal Aviation Administration’s rules for commercial use of drones officially took effect last month, which include a number of restrictions on commercial drone operations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Source: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/ups-completes-drone-test-for-urgent-commercial-delivery-2016-09-23 Drones are coming to a hard-to-reach customer near you. Package delivery giant United Parcel Service Inc. UPS, -0.69% began testing Thursday the use of drones to make commercial deliveries of packages to remote locations. Working with Danvers, Mass.-based drone maker CyPhy Works, UPS staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to Children’s Island. As part of the test, UPS said the drone delivered an asthma inhaler to a child at a camp on the island, which is only a few miles offshore, but isn’t accessible by automobile. The drone took about six minutes to deliver its package--with “very extreme precision,” Wallace said--while a boat ride of similar distance could take roughly five times as long. “Our focus is on real-world applications that benefit our customers,” said Mark Wallace, senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability at UPS. “We think drones offer a great solution to deliver to hard-to-reach locations in urgent situations where other modes of transportation are not readily available.” The drone used--CyPhy’s Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications (PARC) vehicle system--is battery powered, has night vision, flies itself and features a secure communications system. United Parcel Service, CyPhy Works UPS invested in CyPhy to gather information about drone uses and capabilities. UPS has tested drones in warehouses to check high, difficult-to-access storage racks, to confirm stock and available storage space. In May, the company announced a partnership with drone startup Zipline and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to deliver blood transfusions throughout Rwanda by drone. Thursday’s first test of a commercial delivery comes less than a month after the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration put new rules--Part 107--into effect, which reduce restrictions on the use of unmanned aircraft systems for commercial applications. “People are captivated by the limitless possibilities unmanned aircraft offer, and they are already creating business opportunities in this exciting new field,” said Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx in a statement released Aug. 29. UPS said it plans to continue to work with regulators as new guidelines are put into place. UPS Airlines’ director of safety, Captain Houston Mills, was recently appointed to the FAA’s new drove advisory committee. Current rules that could still hinder the commercialization of drone deliveries include: • The drone must remain within visual line-of-sight of the remote pilot or of the visual observer from take off to delivery. • Drones may not operate over people who are not directly part of the operation Shares of UPS have climbed 14% year to date, while the Dow Jones Transportation Average DJT, +0.30% has tacked on 6.1% over the same time, and the S&P 500 SPX, +0.53% has gained 6.5% UPS doesn’t expect drones to replace other forms of delivery, but they can increase the places deliveries can be made in a timely manner. “UPS uniformed employees remain a vital connection to our customers, but tests like these reveal a bridge to the future of customer service and urgent package delivery,” Wallace said.

(23 Sep 2016) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus063647 One of the largest package delivery companies in the world is stepping up efforts to figure out ways to integrate drones in its system. UPS has partnered with Massachusetts robot-maker CyPhy Works to test the use of drones to make commercial deliveries to remote or difficult-to-access locations. The two companies began testing the use of drones on Thursday when they launched a drone from the Massachusetts seaside town of Marblehead, and the aircraft flew on its own on a programmed route for three miles over the Atlantic Ocean to deliver an inhaler at Children's Island. CyPhy Works Founder Helen Greiner said the tests with UPS are a big deal. "Well, UPS delivers 15 million packages a day, so it's a huge operation and we don't yet have numbers" on how drones could fit into that delivery system, said Greiner, who previously founded iconic robot maker iRobot. Still, the robot maker does not see drones replacing delivery trucks, bikes, buggies or gondolas anytime soon. Newly revised federal aviation regulations also do not currently permit commercial drone to fly over people not involved in the operation and they require the aircraft to remain within line of sight of the operator at all times, facts that effectively render commercial deliveries impossible. Those restrictions are not holding back drone makers and their partners from racing to develop technology suitable for commercial deliveries, while they continue working with federal aviation regulator to tweak existing rules.
