UPS Drone Delivery
UPS announced that it has successfully tested a drone that launches from the top of a UPS® package car, autonomously delivers a package to a home and then returns to the vehicle while the delivery driver continues along the route to make a separate delivery. Get More Great Car Videos - Subscribe: https://goo.gl/BSIaFc UPS conducted the test on Monday in Lithia, Fla. with Workhorse Group (NASDAQ: WKHS), an Ohio-based battery-electric truck and drone developer. Workhorse built the drone and the electric UPS package car used in the test. “This test is different than anything we’ve done with drones so far. It has implications for future deliveries, especially in rural locations where our package cars often have to travel miles to make a single delivery,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. “Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are miles apart by road. Sending a drone from a package car to make just one of those deliveries can reduce costly miles driven. This is a big step toward bolstering efficiency in our network and reducing our emissions at the same time.” With ORION, UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization Navigation routing software, a reduction of just one mile per driver per day over one year can save UPS up to $50 million. UPS has about 66,000 delivery drivers on the road each day. Rural delivery routes are the most expensive to serve due to the time and vehicle expenses required to complete each delivery. In this test, the drone made one delivery while the driver continued down the road to make another. This is a possible role UPS envisions for drones in the future. “Drivers are the face of our company, and that won’t change,” Wallace said. “What’s exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes, helping them save time and deliver on increasing customer service needs that stem from the growth of e-commerce.” The drone used in Monday’s test was the Workhorse HorseFly™ UAV Delivery system. It is a high-efficiency, octocopter delivery drone that is fully integrated with Workhorse’s line of electric/hybrid delivery trucks. The drone docks on the roof of the delivery truck. A cage suspended beneath the drone, extends through a hatch into the truck. A UPS driver inside loads a package into the cage and presses a button on a touch screen, sending the drone on a preset autonomous route to an address. The battery-powered HorseFly drone recharges while it’s docked. It has a 30-minute flight time and can carry a package weighing up to 10 pounds. For this test, Workhorse preset the route for the drone. But in the future, routes could be determined by UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION), which is the company’s proprietary routing software. “It’s wonderful to see this technology applied in such a practical way,” said Stephen Burns, Workhorse founder and CEO. “The drone is fully autonomous. It doesn’t require a pilot. So the delivery driver is free to make other deliveries while the drone is away.” UPS has been testing automation and robotics technologies, including drones, for years. Last September, UPS staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to an island three miles off the Atlantic coast. Additionally, UPS is using drones extensively for humanitarian relief, partnering with third-party organizations to deliver life-saving blood and vaccines to hard-to-reach locations in Rwanda. UPS also is utilizing drones to check inventory on high storage shelves in its warehouses. Unlike all of the previous tests, the most recent UPS drone test shows how drones might assist in making non-urgent residential deliveries as part of the day-to-day operation. Last year, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued small unmanned aircraft systems rules that allow for some commercial use of drones and paved the way for future expanded applications. UPS was one of 35 selected from a cross section of key stakeholders to serve on the FAA’s drone advisory committee. The committee will provide the FAA recommendations on key drone integration issues that will ultimately allow for safe and secure operations of drones within the National Air Space System. Portland, OR, is the first city to test the new delivery transport system due to the city's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Because of Portland's friendly loading and unloading zones and it was the best place to start. The success of this pilot program was first demonstrated in 2012 in collaboration with the city of Hamburg, Germany. It focused on developing a new and sustainable method of delivering goods to urban areas. UPS’ big trucks have 1 thousand cubic of storage and can carry 300 packages on board. The bicycles that UPS uses have one-tenth the space. The bicycle needs to be able to carry smaller items to a small urban area and able to make frequent trips back to a nearby distribution center. UPS is turning back to its past one that started in 1907 using bicycles as a way to deliver packages. Now, the bikes use advanced engineering with an electric motor providing better range and volume. The UPS delivery e-bike is a cargo tricycle capable of carrying a large volume of packages in an enclosed hauling platform. The e-bike is built by Portland's 'Truck Trike' which builds industrial trikes capable of hauling payloads up to 600 pounds. The e-bike is equipped with battery-powered electric motors that makes it possible to cover further distances, carry substantial loads, and navigate hills and other terrain. The eBike can be operated solely on battery power or pedal power. During the testing phase, UPS will evaluate the reliability, design, integration to the city’s infrastructure and acceptance of the vehicle. If you haven't tried an E-bike you don't know what you're missing. Electric bikes continue to be the highest selling electric vehicle on the planet, and are set to account for $24.3 billion worth of annual sales by 2025. Thanks for watching our videos. UPS Starts Testing On Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Delivery Truck
UPS has unveiled a more efficient prototype delivery truck aimed at cutting both emissions and fuel costs. Powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, which takes compressed hydrogen gas and converts it into electricity, with the only byproduct being water, the new trucks can store about 10 kilograms of hydrogen fuel and have an estimated range of 125 miles. UPS plans to deploy the first fuel-cell prototypes in Sacramento later this year. Additional fuel-cell trucks are planned to be rolled out in order to accrue about 5,000 hours of performance testing. Part of the money for this program originates from a 2013 Department of Energy grant focused on implementing hydrogen fuel-cell technology in commercial delivery vehicles. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ups-begins-testing-hydrogen-fuel-cell-delivery-truck/#ftag=CAD590a51e http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

UPS Is Next Company To Try Out Drone Delivery
Drones are becoming cheaper and more available, so of course more people and companies are looking into them for different uses. They’re used in everything from military work to film making. And now their new platform is delivery. Companies like Amazon and Dominos have been testing them out and now UPS is the latest company to jump on board. UPS debuted their new drone system called HorseFly last week that was developed by the company Workhorse, who also provides their electric trucks. The drone takes off from the roof of the truck and can carry a package that weighs up to 10 pounds to the residential destination, according to Autoblog. The drone is completely autonomous but is required to stay in visual sight lines of the operator due to FAA rules. HorseFly communicates with the truck through 4G but can use radio frequency as a back up if it’s out in rural places. UPS delivery drone has glitch at launch event
The delivery firm UPS has unveiled a drone-launching truck - but the event did not go completely to plan. One aircraft failed to launch properly and was then nearly destroyed. The test in Florida was intended to demonstrate how package-carrying drones could make the company more efficient in rural locations. However, US rules currently state that commercial use of such aircraft requires pilots to keep them in sight. The firm acknowledges that until this restriction is eased it cannot carry out its plan to let drivers deploy the drones from one location and then meet up with them at another, letting both humans and machines make deliveries simultaneously. "Drivers are the face of our company and that won't change," said Mark Wallace, the firm's senior vice-president of global engineering. "What's exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes. Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are kilometres apart. "Sending a drone from a package car to make just one of those deliveries can reduce costly kilometres driven." The Horsefly octacopter involved was made by Ohio-based Workhorse Group. The initial test went well, with the aircraft launching from a platform built into the truck's slide-open roof. But a second attempt was more problematic. The drone tipped over when it tried to take off, rocked back and was then nearly crushed when the truck's roof began to close over the launch pad where the machine was still sitting. "For the photographers we tried to do a quick non-traditional delivery and something went wrong," Stephen Burns, chief executive of Workhorse, told the news site Techcrunch. "We probably shouldn't have tried to do something weird like that with everyone watching." Mr Burns added that the problem may have been caused by interference from TV cameras filming the trial. Techcrunch has posted footage of the incident on its site. UPS says it is not sure when or how it will eventually roll out the flying robots. "We have no idea how all that will play out until we find out how to integrate them into the business," Mr Dodero told reporters. Drones are, however, already making medical deliveries in Rwanda - a project UPS is involved in - and Amazon is testing the tech in the UK.

UPS The road too dangerous for delivery.
A ride down the road UPS deems too dangerous to deliver due to severe weather conditions. It has been 1 week since UPS received my package and has not made an attempt to deliver due to severe weather conditions. A second package shipped with next day delivery has also been delayed today due to severe weather conditions. I have received Fed Ex packages this past week with no issues. I finally called today and "severe weather conditions" turned into the driver said the road is too rough for delivery. This is not the first time this has happened with UPS and I am finally getting around to posting a video about it and how to deal with it . In the future I will post more videos on how to deal UPS .
