Police said a UPS driver was ambushed in a southwest Atlanta neighborhood Wednesday night in what appears to be a dangerous trend developing for delivery drivers at the start of the holiday season. App users: View full article here Wednesday night along Allegheny Street near Cascade Ave, Atlanta Police said an armed man ambushed a UPS driver as it was making deliveries. Investigators said the man ordered the delivery driver out of the signature brown truck and before he ransacked the van, pilfering packages. Police said package pirate also stole the delivery driver’s cell phone before leaving the scene. A witness called 911. No injuries were reported in this incident. %INLINE% This incident follows a similar report from Tuesday morning near the Donald Lee Hollowell Pkwy NW & Fulton Industrial Blvd NW. Atlanta Police said two UPS delivery trucks were stopped at a red light around 10 a.m. when they were ambushed. “They were stopped at the red light there when three males approached. They got in those two vehicles and forced the drivers to drive to the 3000 block of Cushman Circle,” said Sgt. John Chafee, Atlanta Police Department. That location is an abandoned apartment complex in northwest Atlanta about five miles. “The males tied up the drivers and they began to load the packages from this trucks into a waiting U-Haul truck,” said Sgt. Chafee. %INLINE% Police said the crooks didn’t get a chance to get away thanks to a witness who phoned in a tip to police. “The suspects heard the police coming into the area and they fled leaving all three of those vehicles there along with the packages there,” said Chaffee. Police will be investigating if the two incident are related, but as of late Wednesday evening, it was too early to tell. Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Atlanta Crime Stoppers. Tipsters can remain anonymous and be eligible for a $2,000 reward.

UPS Drone Delivery

01:48
UPS announced that it has successfully tested a drone that launches from the top of a UPS® package car, autonomously delivers a package to a home and then returns to the vehicle while the delivery driver continues along the route to make a separate delivery. Get More Great Car Videos - Subscribe: https://goo.gl/BSIaFc UPS conducted the test on Monday in Lithia, Fla. with Workhorse Group (NASDAQ: WKHS), an Ohio-based battery-electric truck and drone developer. Workhorse built the drone and the electric UPS package car used in the test. “This test is different than anything we’ve done with drones so far. It has implications for future deliveries, especially in rural locations where our package cars often have to travel miles to make a single delivery,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. “Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are miles apart by road. Sending a drone from a package car to make just one of those deliveries can reduce costly miles driven. This is a big step toward bolstering efficiency in our network and reducing our emissions at the same time.” With ORION, UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization Navigation routing software, a reduction of just one mile per driver per day over one year can save UPS up to $50 million. UPS has about 66,000 delivery drivers on the road each day. Rural delivery routes are the most expensive to serve due to the time and vehicle expenses required to complete each delivery. In this test, the drone made one delivery while the driver continued down the road to make another. This is a possible role UPS envisions for drones in the future. “Drivers are the face of our company, and that won’t change,” Wallace said. “What’s exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes, helping them save time and deliver on increasing customer service needs that stem from the growth of e-commerce.” The drone used in Monday’s test was the Workhorse HorseFly™ UAV Delivery system. It is a high-efficiency, octocopter delivery drone that is fully integrated with Workhorse’s line of electric/hybrid delivery trucks. The drone docks on the roof of the delivery truck. A cage suspended beneath the drone, extends through a hatch into the truck. A UPS driver inside loads a package into the cage and presses a button on a touch screen, sending the drone on a preset autonomous route to an address. The battery-powered HorseFly drone recharges while it’s docked. It has a 30-minute flight time and can carry a package weighing up to 10 pounds. For this test, Workhorse preset the route for the drone. But in the future, routes could be determined by UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION), which is the company’s proprietary routing software. “It’s wonderful to see this technology applied in such a practical way,” said Stephen Burns, Workhorse founder and CEO. “The drone is fully autonomous. It doesn’t require a pilot. So the delivery driver is free to make other deliveries while the drone is away.” UPS has been testing automation and robotics technologies, including drones, for years. Last September, UPS staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to an island three miles off the Atlantic coast. Additionally, UPS is using drones extensively for humanitarian relief, partnering with third-party organizations to deliver life-saving blood and vaccines to hard-to-reach locations in Rwanda. UPS also is utilizing drones to check inventory on high storage shelves in its warehouses. Unlike all of the previous tests, the most recent UPS drone test shows how drones might assist in making non-urgent residential deliveries as part of the day-to-day operation. Last year, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued small unmanned aircraft systems rules that allow for some commercial use of drones and paved the way for future expanded applications. UPS was one of 35 selected from a cross section of key stakeholders to serve on the FAA’s drone advisory committee. The committee will provide the FAA recommendations on key drone integration issues that will ultimately allow for safe and secure operations of drones within the National Air Space System. UPS package jams door handle and traps man inside his own apartment in UPS delivery fail - TomoNews

05:34
DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA — A delivery man should leave your package either right in your hands or in a safe spot, and not trap you in your own apartment. A UPS delivery person unintentionally made a California man a prisoner inside his own apartment over the weekend when a package actually boxed him in. After discovering that he was unable to turn his door handle from the inside, Jessie Lawrence called his apartment's maintenance guy to help free him from this conundrum, SFGate reported. Lawrence then realised that his door handle had been jammed by a package delivered by a UPS guy who left it inconveniently right under the outside door handle, rendering it unable to turn. Lawrence later recreated the set up and tweeted a photo of it to UPS. Thanks to the power of Twitter, the tweet was quickly shared tens of thousands of times. Though the post has since been deleted, there are still plenty of screenshots floating around the Interwebs. The tweet has also set off a series of responses of people sharing their own bizarre delivery experiences. Some debated whether the image was fake, theorizing the door could have still been opened even with the package stuck under the handle, as the door opens inward. While others were simply curious about what is inside the large box. UPS Customer Support soon offered up a typo-filled apology to Lawrence via their Twitter account. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. UPS reveals new cargo bike that will roll on Toronto streets

00:48
UPS unveiled a pilot project which will use cargo bikes for package delivery. The reveal comes on the heels of a report last week from Pembina Institute that recommended Toronto use more cargo bikes to cut down on traffic and emissions. (Toronto Star) For more on this story visit the Toronto Star: https://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2017/10/23/ups-to-test-cargo-bikes-for-deliveries-in-toronto.html Read and excerpt of Ben Spurr's article below: A new type of vehicle is about to roll out on Toronto’s streets. UPS announced Monday the U.S.-based shipping giant is a launching a pilot project of using cargo bikes for package deliveries. At a press conference outside city hall to mark the launch of the pilot program, Mayor John Tory said deploying cargo bikes could help reduce congestion and mitigate the “traffic nightmares that people experience in this city. “It’s time we take a look at something like this, because it’s being done in Frankfurt, in Vienna, in Hamburg, in Rome. And it has made a difference in those cities; they know that,” he said. According to UPS Canada President Christoph Atz, this is the first time it has piloted the vehicles in Canada, although it has used cargo bikes in cities around the world. Atz called it “another step towards a more sustainable city.” Evaluation of the project “will determine our strategy going forward for cargo delivery by bicycle on a larger scale in Toronto and potentially to other cities across Canada,” Atz said. UPS Is Next Company To Try Out Drone Delivery

01:00
Drones are becoming cheaper and more available, so of course more people and companies are looking into them for different uses. They’re used in everything from military work to film making. And now their new platform is delivery. Companies like Amazon and Dominos have been testing them out and now UPS is the latest company to jump on board. UPS debuted their new drone system called HorseFly last week that was developed by the company Workhorse, who also provides their electric trucks. The drone takes off from the roof of the truck and can carry a package that weighs up to 10 pounds to the residential destination, according to Autoblog. The drone is completely autonomous but is required to stay in visual sight lines of the operator due to FAA rules. HorseFly communicates with the truck through 4G but can use radio frequency as a back up if it’s out in rural places. UPS Starts Testing On Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Delivery Truck

00:52
UPS has unveiled a more efficient prototype delivery truck aimed at cutting both emissions and fuel costs. Powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, which takes compressed hydrogen gas and converts it into electricity, with the only byproduct being water, the new trucks can store about 10 kilograms of hydrogen fuel and have an estimated range of 125 miles. UPS plans to deploy the first fuel-cell prototypes in Sacramento later this year. Additional fuel-cell trucks are planned to be rolled out in order to accrue about 5,000 hours of performance testing. Part of the money for this program originates from a 2013 Department of Energy grant focused on implementing hydrogen fuel-cell technology in commercial delivery vehicles. https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/ups-begins-testing-hydrogen-fuel-cell-delivery-truck/#ftag=CAD590a51e http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Portland, OR, is the first city to test the new delivery transport system due to the city's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Because of Portland's friendly loading and unloading zones and it was the best place to start. The success of this pilot program was first demonstrated in 2012 in collaboration with the city of Hamburg, Germany. It focused on developing a new and sustainable method of delivering goods to urban areas. UPS’ big trucks have 1 thousand cubic of storage and can carry 300 packages on board. The bicycles that UPS uses have one-tenth the space. The bicycle needs to be able to carry smaller items to a small urban area and able to make frequent trips back to a nearby distribution center. UPS is turning back to its past one that started in 1907 using bicycles as a way to deliver packages. Now, the bikes use advanced engineering with an electric motor providing better range and volume. The UPS delivery e-bike is a cargo tricycle capable of carrying a large volume of packages in an enclosed hauling platform. The e-bike is built by Portland's 'Truck Trike' which builds industrial trikes capable of hauling payloads up to 600 pounds. The e-bike is equipped with battery-powered electric motors that makes it possible to cover further distances, carry substantial loads, and navigate hills and other terrain. The eBike can be operated solely on battery power or pedal power. During the testing phase, UPS will evaluate the reliability, design, integration to the city’s infrastructure and acceptance of the vehicle. If you haven't tried an E-bike you don't know what you're missing. Electric bikes continue to be the highest selling electric vehicle on the planet, and are set to account for $24.3 billion worth of annual sales by 2025. Thanks for watching our videos. Track FedEx and UPS Packages in Google Sheets 📦 #2 - Delivery Date, Method, Weight, Etc.

04:50
In this second episode I show you how to bring in other details like delivery date, destination, weight, and shipment service level. --- This new method allows you to track FedEx, UPS, USPS, and many more carriers in the same Google Sheets spreadsheet. You will be able to see the current status of a package—whether it has been delivered, delayed, or held up for some other reason. All you have to do is paste in a tracking number (and copy down the logic columns). Please note that this example is piggy-backing off a Heroku package called, Shipit. Please run your own deployment of Shipit so as to not overwhelm the demo deployment. Shipit Heroku Package: https://www.npmjs.com/package/shipit ImportJSON Function: https://www.chicagocomputerclasses.com/google-sheets-import-json-importjson-function/ Copy of Spreadsheet (must be signed in to Google): http://bit.ly/2xtJoX7 Questions? The holiday shopping season is in full swing and with the uptick in online shopping, delivery services likes UPS are busy. Very busy.
