Four people, including a UPS driver, were killed Thursday after robbers stole the driver’s truck and led police on a chase that ended in gunfire at a busy Florida intersection during rush hour, a law enforcement official said. Both robbers were shot and killed, and the fourth victim was in a nearby vehicle when shots rang out at a crowded intersection in Miramar, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of where the incident began, according to an official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the information had not yet been announced publicly. Television news helicopters showed first responders tending to at least one person who fell out of the UPS truck, moments after several shots were fired when the chase ended. In Coral Gables, where the incident began, police said a jewelry store worker was also injured but could not say if she had been shot. There was no immediate update on her condition. It all began shortly after 4 p.m., when police in Coral Gables received a silent alarm at the Regent Jewelers store in the city’s Miracle Mile area. Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak said during a news conference that two suspects were at the store and that shots were being fired when police arrived. The suspects fled in a truck, then carjacked the UPS delivery truck and its driver not long afterward to start the chase into the southern portion of Broward County, running red lights and narrowly avoiding some crashes along the way. The UPS truck finally stopped in one of the middle lanes of a busy roadway, caught behind a wall of other vehicles waiting for a red light to turn green. Television footage showed several officers on foot, some with guns drawn, approaching the truck once it stopped from the rear and the driver’s side. News helicopters were following the chase and at least one showed the conclusion live, with one person falling out of the vehicle’s passenger side after several shots were fired. It was unclear if the shots were fired from inside the truck, from law enforcement who were moving in or some combination thereof. “This is what dangerous people do to get away,” Hudak said. “And this is what people will do to avoid capture.” A bullet hit a window at Coral Gables’ City Hall, which was locked down, Hudak said. No one inside City Hall was believed to be injured, Hudak said. Hudak said officers responded within 90 seconds, including one officer on foot who was involved in a nearby traffic stop. It was not immediately clear if anything from the jewelry store was taken, Hudak said. Hours after the chase ended, medical gauze, wrappers and other debris remained strewn across the Miramar roadway’s middle lane, next to the truck which still had its right rear door open. Traffic remained snarled, and it was not clear how long it would take investigators to clear the scene. UPS spokesman David Graves said they are staying in touch with authorities. He didn’t share any information about the driver. Last week we had an ice storm. My driveway was smooth, wet ice... super slippery. I heard the UPS truck pull up so I opened the garage and told him to just leave the package at the sidewalk and I'd figure out a way to get it, but he insisted on getting it to me. Above and beyond... this guy is awesome.

Wonder how Amazon Prime can get you a product within one/two days? Amazon’s Distribution network is intricate but efficient. It’s fulfillment centers are the heart of the operation and connect to other distribution centers. It still mostly relies on 3rd party logistics providers like UPS and FedEx. Its own fleet of planes and trailer trucks is gradually growing but still only responsible for a fraction of the packages. This video was an oversimplification. For a more thorough analysis, you may want to check out this website. https://www.innovationtactics.com/amazon-business-model-part-1/ Amazon F.C credit - Rauglothgor Sources: https://anotepad.com/notes/j4ryf5

Nearly an hour-long police chase ensued in Coral Gables, Florida, on Thursday, ending in gunfire and multiple people shot dead, according to police. Coral Gables police said they were investigating a robbery at Regent Jewelers at 386 Mile. Shots were fired and the two alleged robbers jumped into a UPS truck and fled the scene, taking the delivery driver with them. A woman was shot in the head at the jewelry store, according to Local 10 News. Her condition is unknown. The hijack “turned into a hostage situation with the UPS driver,” Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak said, according to the Sun-Sentinel. The UPS truck made its way up Interstate 75 with dozens of police cars on its tail. Traffic came to a standstill as terrified drivers waited for the crazed truck driver to pass. Once the UPS truck was boxed in, more shots were exchanged between law enforcement and the fleeing robbers. At least one person from the truck was taken away from the scene in an ambulance and another inside the truck appeared to be wounded. The UPS driver could be seen sitting in the truck on the floor near the center wheel during live video of the chase. Police say the two suspects and two innocent civilians died.

A white woman was captured on camera calling the police on a black UPS worker that he made her 'nervous' as he delivered packages in her neighborhood. The woman has not immediately been identified, but said she lives in the area where the Peters, a seasonal worker, was delivering several postal items. 'I'm going to need someone's information to check up on you, because I don't understand why you're walking around this neighborhood with a bunch a packages,' the woman says at the beginning of the video. When Peters expresses that the woman is bothering him, she explains that the man's presence made her 'nervous.' 'I'm not bothering you,' she says. 'I want to complain to UPS that you look very suspicious and making me nervous.' She then goes on to explain her apprehension, citing past break-ins that occurred in the area. 'No, let me tell you why. My car's already been broken into twice. And guess what? It's a really big thing in this neighborhood for people to walk down the street for vandalism,' she says. Feeling affronted, Peters refuses to give his name when asked and is shocked when the woman says she would be following him throughout the rest of his route. The woman says: 'Like I said you look very suspicious and I'm trying to tell you, you need to at least be able to tell people who you work for.'Peters then proceeds to turn the camera around and show what appears to be a company issued jacket with the official emblem attached. Later, Peters also shows his work dolly carrying a pile of packages meant to be delivered. At one point the woman retreats to her home, but reappears to allegedly take pictures of the man and record him. In a separate clip, the woman says she has called the police as a second UPS worker comes into frame and begins speaking to the woman. It is unclear what occurs after the video ends. Since is initial posting, the video has been shared on Twitter and has quickly gone viral. #whitewomancallsthepoliceonupsdeliveryman #upsdeliveryman #ups

UPS has been secretly hauling cargo back and forth between Phoenix and Tuczon, Arizona for over three months, courtesy of their minority stake in automated trucking startup TuSimple. The tractor trailers are outfitted with nine cameras, as well as LiDAR sensors, those spinning contraptions often attached to the roofs of self-driving vehicles to help them "see." At first blush, it seems to be what mainstream scientists refer to as "totally made up," but it's true: when at all possible, delivery drivers for the United Parcel Service, better known as UPS, won't make left turns. "But why?" you might ask. And if you did ask, it would be a good question. Is it out of fear? Some leftover superstition from days long passed? A deep respect for folks like Derek Zoolander? Well, prepare to be flabbergasted and get ready to have your mind blown, because it turns out that the reasoning is actually grounded in genuine logic, reason and science. It probably won't surprise you to learn that one of the largest, most financially successful delivery companies on the planet makes a decent amount of its decisions based on what will make them the most money. What might shock you, though, is how much money they're estimated to save simply by telling their drivers not to hang a louie. According to CNN, UPS saves an estimated 10 million gallons of fuel every year just by eliminating left turns. With diesel running, on average, around three dollars per gallon, that's a $30 million annual savings. They also shave miles off of every route, allowing for more packages to be delivered, saving money on man hours and, in the long run, maintenance. The grand total? By their own estimates, they save somewhere in the $300-400 million per year by finding the most efficient delivery routes, routes designed around never making a left turn. Yes, it sounds impossible. But the folks at Mythbusters actually tested the theory that skipping right turns could save on fuel and found that, in a single route, a truck making exclusively right turns used around a third less fuel than one that sat waiting to take a left! So should we all be avoiding left turns in our daily lives in an attempt to see what brown can do for us? Funny you should mention it, but as a matter of fact, yeah, we probably should. See, as it turns out, left turns are kind of the bane of modern traffic, at least in parts of the world where people drive on the right side of the road, and that's about 65 percent of all drivers worldwide, so it's a pretty big deal. Think about your daily commute: turning right is quicker, since you can generally do it at a red light. You're not stuck in the middle of the intersection waiting for oncoming traffic to pass, running your engine pointlessly as the sound of your turn signal ticks away your precious moments on this mortal plane. There's also the matter of safety. In 2014, the Washington Post reported that more than 50 percent of crossing-path collisions involved a left turn, while less than six percent involved hanging a right. More shockingly, over a third of fatal motorcycle accidents were due to an automobile unexpectedly making a left hand turn in front of the biker. Through the use of routing software programmed to eliminate as many left turns from their drivers' daily grinds as possible, UPS minimizes the risk of their employees causing congestion or being involved in potentially deadly accidents. And both of those are even bigger wins than saving a few hundred million dollars. While the idea of nearly eliminating an entire direction of travel from a delivery driver's arsenal might seem novel, it's actually a method that the company has been using for decades. CNN reported that UPS has been utilizing a right-turn-heavy system since the 1970s. Since then, they've developed a routing optimization software program called ORION that, by comparison makes your GPS look like an old timey farmhand giving you directions. ORION, which took more than a decade to develop, takes insane amounts of data that most mapping software wouldn't consider, making thousands of calculations per minute to create the most efficient multi-point route possible. The results? According to UPS, millions of dollars saved, and a reduction of 100,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year, leading to cleaner air for everyone. Strange, but true. #UPS #TruckDrivers

Amazon aims to compete with FedEx and UPS in the logistics and shipping industry. That's what analysts told CNBC after Amazon Air recently expanded to 50 planes and announced it will open a $1.5 billion air hub in Northern Kentucky in 2021. Amazon is handling up to 26% of its own shipping, meaning FedEx, UPS and the U.S. Postal Service are losing a portion of Amazon's business. FedEx says it's not worried, but Morgan Stanley reports the major shippers have already lost 2% revenue to Amazon Air. » Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. UPS is beginning a groundbreaking new logistics program using unmanned drones to deliver medical samples at a North Carolina hospital. It’s the first FAA-sanctioned use of a drone for routine revenue flights transporting products under a contractual delivery agreement. The pilot program is taking place at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, overseen by the FAA and North Carolina Department of Transportation. The program represents a major milestone for unmanned aviation in the U.S. Working with Matternet, a California drone company, drones operate multiple times a day between a medical building on the edge of WakeMed’s campus and the hospital’s main pathology lab. The project is part of the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft System Integration Pilot Program, or IPP. The IPP aims to test practical applications of drones by partnering local governments with private sector companies to learn how drone technology can be integrated safely and usefully into day-to-day activities. The program is managed by the UPS Advanced Technology Group. Bala Ganesh, who leads the group, said drones are an important part of UPS’s transformation efforts. “What you’re seeing is transformation in action. It will play out over the next four or five years, but today is the first step in that journey,” Ganesh said. The M2 drone can carry a five-pound payload over a distance of up to 12.5 miles, at a speed of more than 40 miles per hour. Initial service involves short hops moving blood samples between buildings at WakeMed, but even that short distance can have a significant impact. The service avoids road delays and reduces transit time from hours by courier to potentially just minutes by drone. As the project advances, drones will connect the hospital with satellite medical facilities miles away. UPS will use what it learns at WakeMed to identify drone service opportunities at more U.S. hospitals and potentially other specialized segments. “This opens the door for UPS and Matternet to serve the life science sector in a more robust way as logistics demands shift,” said Chris Cassidy, president of UPS Global Healthcare and Life Science Logistics. “Healthcare logistics is a strategic focus for UPS, and we are developing innovative solutions that position us as the logistics provider of choice.” Dr. Stuart Ginn, director of WakeMed Innovations, said he’s excited about the drone program because it has the potential to reshape how the hospital provides care to patients. He added that UPS’s participation has been critical. “When a company like UPS shows up and shows interest, it legitimizes the entire industry and accelerates the entire industry,” he said. #UPS #drone #healthcare
