The Dark Truth Behind Free Two-Day Shipping! Subscribe to TheHub http://goo.gl/87YJzG Freedom isn’t free and neither is free shipping. While more and more companies get in on the game, hidden fees can go totally unnoticed until you take a magnifying glass to your emailed receipt. Sure, it seems like an incredible bargain at first, but it usually requires something extra from you. Whether you’re forced to sign up for a special membership or asked to purchase a certain amount of goods, this service has more strings attached to it than a balloon at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Your purchased items will definitely reach your doorstep faster than a slow-moving float, but the cost is more than just hidden fees: The environment is the most exploited victim. Beyond the extra boxes and shipping materials needed for a bump in orders so customers can meet their free shipping quota, the carbon footprint of extra fuel and the need for more trucks on the road have a lasting effect on the Earth. The good thing is, these big companies are looking for ways to get you to buy their products so obviously they want your experience to be as convenient as possible. As you click through their sites - whether they be Amazon, Walmart, or some new start-up – you should know that as much as they want your business, they’re still trying to make a profit. Before you get all buy-happy at your favorite digital departments store, TheHub will shed some light on The Dark Truth Behind Free Two-Day Shipping. Horrible service By UPS. My UPS delivery was thrown out from the track to the ground wherever it would lands.

Last week we had an ice storm. My driveway was smooth, wet ice... super slippery. I heard the UPS truck pull up so I opened the garage and told him to just leave the package at the sidewalk and I'd figure out a way to get it, but he insisted on getting it to me. Above and beyond... this guy is awesome.

UPS is beginning a groundbreaking new logistics program using unmanned drones to deliver medical samples at a North Carolina hospital. It’s the first FAA-sanctioned use of a drone for routine revenue flights transporting products under a contractual delivery agreement. The pilot program is taking place at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, overseen by the FAA and North Carolina Department of Transportation. The program represents a major milestone for unmanned aviation in the U.S. Working with Matternet, a California drone company, drones operate multiple times a day between a medical building on the edge of WakeMed’s campus and the hospital’s main pathology lab. The project is part of the FAA’s Unmanned Aircraft System Integration Pilot Program, or IPP. The IPP aims to test practical applications of drones by partnering local governments with private sector companies to learn how drone technology can be integrated safely and usefully into day-to-day activities. The program is managed by the UPS Advanced Technology Group. Bala Ganesh, who leads the group, said drones are an important part of UPS’s transformation efforts. “What you’re seeing is transformation in action. It will play out over the next four or five years, but today is the first step in that journey,” Ganesh said. The M2 drone can carry a five-pound payload over a distance of up to 12.5 miles, at a speed of more than 40 miles per hour. Initial service involves short hops moving blood samples between buildings at WakeMed, but even that short distance can have a significant impact. The service avoids road delays and reduces transit time from hours by courier to potentially just minutes by drone. As the project advances, drones will connect the hospital with satellite medical facilities miles away. UPS will use what it learns at WakeMed to identify drone service opportunities at more U.S. hospitals and potentially other specialized segments. “This opens the door for UPS and Matternet to serve the life science sector in a more robust way as logistics demands shift,” said Chris Cassidy, president of UPS Global Healthcare and Life Science Logistics. “Healthcare logistics is a strategic focus for UPS, and we are developing innovative solutions that position us as the logistics provider of choice.” Dr. Stuart Ginn, director of WakeMed Innovations, said he’s excited about the drone program because it has the potential to reshape how the hospital provides care to patients. He added that UPS’s participation has been critical. “When a company like UPS shows up and shows interest, it legitimizes the entire industry and accelerates the entire industry,” he said.

Last week UPS announced a partnership with Zipline to trial medical delivery flights in Rwanda. DHL are already out there doing it with their Parcelcopter tilt-rotor VTOL system. DHL Parcel has successfully concluded a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. The trial run, part of a larger research and innovation project, was conducted between January and March 2016 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. It represents the first time worldwide that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. Private customers in Reit im Winkl and up on the Winklmoosalm plateau were invited to test out the specially developed Packstations, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. During the three month trial period, they could simply insert their shipments into the Skyport to initiate automated shipment and delivery per Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. As part of the trial, the technically upgraded vehicle was able to deal with heavier loads, longer distances and delivery to an alpine region notable for its geographical and meteorological challenges. The first task was to master the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the test area. With that achieved, the DHL Parcelcopter then performed a series of flawless flights. Each round trip from valley to plateau at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level covered eight kilometers of flight. The drone’s cargo was typically either sporting goods or urgently needed medicines and it arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of take-off. The same trip by car takes more than 30 minutes during winter.
