UPS earlier today announced that its fleet of alternative fuel delivery vehicles has now driven more than 200 million miles since 2000. The alternative fuel fleet (AFV) now numbers more than 1,900 and another 62 vehicles have just been ordered. Doing the math, including the earth's circumference at the equator, the total mileage accumulated by UPS's "green fleet" is the equivalent to circling the Earth more than 8,000 times. In addition, while it took 11 years to do it the first time, it should only take another 6-years to do it again.

Delivery Drones | DHL steals UPS thunder

03:15
Another day another #deliverydrone. This time, real world point to point deliveries in European weather. Last week UPS announced a partnership with Zipline to trial medical delivery flights in Rwanda. DHL are already out there doing it with their Parcelcopter tilt-rotor VTOL system. DHL Parcel has successfully concluded a three-month test of its third Parcelcopter generation. The trial run, part of a larger research and innovation project, was conducted between January and March 2016 in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. It represents the first time worldwide that a parcel service provider has directly integrated a parcelcopter logistically into its delivery chain. Private customers in Reit im Winkl and up on the Winklmoosalm plateau were invited to test out the specially developed Packstations, dubbed the Parcelcopter Skyport. During the three month trial period, they could simply insert their shipments into the Skyport to initiate automated shipment and delivery per Parcelcopter. A total of 130 autonomous loading and offloading cycles were ultimately performed. As part of the trial, the technically upgraded vehicle was able to deal with heavier loads, longer distances and delivery to an alpine region notable for its geographical and meteorological challenges. The first task was to master the rapidly changing weather conditions and severe temperature fluctuation in the test area. With that achieved, the DHL Parcelcopter then performed a series of flawless flights. Each round trip from valley to plateau at roughly 1,200 meters above sea level covered eight kilometers of flight. The drone’s cargo was typically either sporting goods or urgently needed medicines and it arrived at the Alm station within just eight minutes of take-off. The same trip by car takes more than 30 minutes during winter. Watch UPS Tetris In 24-Hour Holiday Delivery Time-Lapse

There’s a UPS parking lot packed with truck trailers behind our Hell’s Kitchen office. On any given day–but during the holiday season in particular–the place is buzzing with activity, as its delivery fleet hitches up to and drops off the trailers. Due to space constraints, this plays out like an IRL game of Tetris, which we captured from a camera mounted on our roof in this 24-hour timelapse. Watch the entire puzzle-like dance play out in about three minutes above. Good luck making it through to the end. UPS tests drone delivery of medicine in Massachusetts - TomoNews

00:59
CHILDREN’S ISLAND, MASSACHUSETTS — Package delivery company UPS partnered with drone-maker CyPhy Works to conduct a test delivery using a drone last Thursday. The drone used in the test delivery was CyPhy Works’ Persistent Aerial Reconnaissance and Communications system (PARC). It flew three miles over the Atlantic Ocean from Beverly, Massachusetts to Children’s Island, where it successfully delivered an asthma inhaler to a child at the camp. The PARC drone is battery-powered and equipped with night vision. It also features secure communications system, preventing information from being intercepted or disrupted. “Drone technology used in this way can save lives and deliver products and services to places that are difficult to reach by traditional transit infrastructures, ” Helen Greiner, the founder and chief technology officer of CyPhy Works said in a press release. Greiner told NBC49.com that the drones are not going to replace delivery trucks. The United States Federal Aviation Administration’s rules for commercial use of drones officially took effect last month, which include a number of restrictions on commercial drone operations. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Portland, OR, is the first city to test the new delivery transport system due to the city's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Because of Portland's friendly loading and unloading zones and it was the best place to start. The success of this pilot program was first demonstrated in 2012 in collaboration with the city of Hamburg, Germany. It focused on developing a new and sustainable method of delivering goods to urban areas. UPS’ big trucks have 1 thousand cubic of storage and can carry 300 packages on board. The bicycles that UPS uses have one-tenth the space. The bicycle needs to be able to carry smaller items to a small urban area and able to make frequent trips back to a nearby distribution center. UPS is turning back to its past one that started in 1907 using bicycles as a way to deliver packages. Now, the bikes use advanced engineering with an electric motor providing better range and volume. The UPS delivery e-bike is a cargo tricycle capable of carrying a large volume of packages in an enclosed hauling platform. The e-bike is built by Portland's 'Truck Trike' which builds industrial trikes capable of hauling payloads up to 600 pounds. The e-bike is equipped with battery-powered electric motors that makes it possible to cover further distances, carry substantial loads, and navigate hills and other terrain. The eBike can be operated solely on battery power or pedal power. During the testing phase, UPS will evaluate the reliability, design, integration to the city’s infrastructure and acceptance of the vehicle. If you haven't tried an E-bike you don't know what you're missing. Electric bikes continue to be the highest selling electric vehicle on the planet, and are set to account for $24.3 billion worth of annual sales by 2025. Thanks for watching our videos. UPS Drone Delivery

01:48
UPS announced that it has successfully tested a drone that launches from the top of a UPS® package car, autonomously delivers a package to a home and then returns to the vehicle while the delivery driver continues along the route to make a separate delivery. Get More Great Car Videos - Subscribe: https://goo.gl/BSIaFc UPS conducted the test on Monday in Lithia, Fla. with Workhorse Group (NASDAQ: WKHS), an Ohio-based battery-electric truck and drone developer. Workhorse built the drone and the electric UPS package car used in the test. “This test is different than anything we’ve done with drones so far. It has implications for future deliveries, especially in rural locations where our package cars often have to travel miles to make a single delivery,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. “Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are miles apart by road. Sending a drone from a package car to make just one of those deliveries can reduce costly miles driven. This is a big step toward bolstering efficiency in our network and reducing our emissions at the same time.” With ORION, UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization Navigation routing software, a reduction of just one mile per driver per day over one year can save UPS up to $50 million. UPS has about 66,000 delivery drivers on the road each day. Rural delivery routes are the most expensive to serve due to the time and vehicle expenses required to complete each delivery. In this test, the drone made one delivery while the driver continued down the road to make another. This is a possible role UPS envisions for drones in the future. “Drivers are the face of our company, and that won’t change,” Wallace said. “What’s exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes, helping them save time and deliver on increasing customer service needs that stem from the growth of e-commerce.” The drone used in Monday’s test was the Workhorse HorseFly™ UAV Delivery system. It is a high-efficiency, octocopter delivery drone that is fully integrated with Workhorse’s line of electric/hybrid delivery trucks. The drone docks on the roof of the delivery truck. A cage suspended beneath the drone, extends through a hatch into the truck. A UPS driver inside loads a package into the cage and presses a button on a touch screen, sending the drone on a preset autonomous route to an address. The battery-powered HorseFly drone recharges while it’s docked. It has a 30-minute flight time and can carry a package weighing up to 10 pounds. For this test, Workhorse preset the route for the drone. But in the future, routes could be determined by UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION), which is the company’s proprietary routing software. “It’s wonderful to see this technology applied in such a practical way,” said Stephen Burns, Workhorse founder and CEO. “The drone is fully autonomous. It doesn’t require a pilot. So the delivery driver is free to make other deliveries while the drone is away.” UPS has been testing automation and robotics technologies, including drones, for years. Last September, UPS staged a mock delivery of urgently needed medicine from Beverly, Mass. to an island three miles off the Atlantic coast. Additionally, UPS is using drones extensively for humanitarian relief, partnering with third-party organizations to deliver life-saving blood and vaccines to hard-to-reach locations in Rwanda. UPS also is utilizing drones to check inventory on high storage shelves in its warehouses. Unlike all of the previous tests, the most recent UPS drone test shows how drones might assist in making non-urgent residential deliveries as part of the day-to-day operation. Last year, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued small unmanned aircraft systems rules that allow for some commercial use of drones and paved the way for future expanded applications. UPS was one of 35 selected from a cross section of key stakeholders to serve on the FAA’s drone advisory committee. The committee will provide the FAA recommendations on key drone integration issues that will ultimately allow for safe and secure operations of drones within the National Air Space System. As CBS 2′s Dave Carlin reported, a surveillance video from a home in Mapleton, Brooklyn, last Thursday, shows a UPS worker leaving a package on the porch, and less than a minute later, a woman jumps out of her white minivan and steals the package. Homeowner Norman Brodt (Nechemia Brodt) said he is stunned by the brazen 5 p.m. crime. "Hopefully, the right surveillance is going to get them," he said. Inside the box were women's shoes, size 7 1/2, valued at $105. "My wife wanted to use (the shoes) for a party for a wedding," he said. Brodt said he is also upset the UPS driver never rang the doorbell because he was home, he said, and there was no notice on the door saying to leave the package outside. UPS has policies to prevent theft, and drivers told Carlin that during the holidays the rules are even more strict. "This time of the year, we are not allowed to leave any packages at all," said UPS driver Uri Eshel. Eshel said every driver is required to knock on doors, and he recommended that customers demand packages be released only with their signatures. Eshel said leaving packages on porches invites criminal behavior. UPS has promised to reimbuse Brodt for the stolen package, he said.
