Kennedy International Airport on February 28, 1984. The flight, operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, originated at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden, before a stopover at an airport in Olso, Norway. All 177 passengers and crew members onboard survived, although 115 were injured. The cause was a runway overshoot due to the crew's failure to monitor their airspeed and overreliance on the aircraft's autothrottle. Holy crap this aeroplane is old

I think in the future all runways should have ample distance for problems. I suppose it is not possible but maybe 3 kilometers instead of barely 1.

capt see speed at 180 and instead of commanding the FO to "Go Around!" He just says "Speed Hi"? what a fucking idiot!

a happy ending is a good ending.

If I was a pilot I'd watch anything labelled "auto" (as in autothrottle) like a hawk, and take manual control the instant it looked like it was messing up.
Sir Tristan (2 months ago)
Video after video and 80-90% come to the same conclusion: the majority of flight crews are inept at the jobs thereby putting life and property in peril.

Just an observation with tail engine aircraft.First of all centre of gravity is bias towards the tail. Secondly the thrust of that engine is behind and above the elevators. The DC10 in my humble option like the TriStar were always unstable by nature???Interesting that no one uses the idea now.? Maybe I am missing the engineering but I would never have designed an aircraft with so much cantiliveer at the rear? Surely it wants to pitch up regardless?

SAS Is so much smaller than it used to be. I’m not a big fan of there livery now but I like there old ones

'Degradation of crew coordination' and over-reliance on auto-controls. Sounds pretty much like any workplace, ever....

Do you have the one about the plane that overran and dunked it's nose in the water in Boston? I knew someone on that flight. plus I forget if the cockpit crew drowned.

Pretty cool that it was repaired and is still flying today

Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. Not sure what kind of landing it is if you can float away, though.

I like it when everyone survives and hugs are passed along thanking God for the gift of life after they walk out of the crashed plane. You don't see that too often.
John Ferguson (5 months ago)
3:24 BREAK (sic) it should say "BRAKE"
Robert Gantry (5 months ago)
Captain should have aborted the landing as soon as he noticed excessive speed during landing. He should have gone around and tried again, and possibly should have gone to full manual flight. I call that an error in judgement.
Robert Gantry (5 months ago)
Didn't the DC-10-30 have lots of problems with the hydraulics in the tail section due to the configuration of the number 2 engine's installation...?
sobelou (1 month ago)
@Robert Gantry . No
Ian Rutherford (5 months ago)
I think where you've typed 'break' you probably meant brake, but they broke it, so I may be wrong

Too many accidents from Douglas planes :-/

Another maintenance f-up, and the pilots not able to fully compensate for that.

Watching these videos, it seems these long time pilots go brain dead !
TedBronson1918 (6 months ago)
The FAA "recommends" that Scandinavian change their procedures? Who the hell is actually in charge - the FAA or the airlines? The FAA needs to start ORDERING them to do X, Y or Z or be banned from flying in the US until they do. That goes for ALL airlines.
yvonne redgrove (7 months ago)
Yes blame the pilots seems all too easy
GenKatQltr (7 months ago)
Thanks for another positive outcome!

They must have veered from the runway in an attempt to slow the plane, or it could have been worse.

Hey fellow commenters, I have seen the ending (about donating) but haven’t really paid attention to it. It’s just sort of “there”. But I finally thought about how much I enjoy these vids, and went to the patreon site. This looks like a hard working young man, and right now he’s getting about $480 bucks a month off of this, and seems like he is really using the money for good stuff too. Let’s all pledge a few bucks ... come on... even the $1.00 a month pledge would be awesome for this young man, and I know I sure get a $1.00 month EASILY out of this. A lot of us probably think he’s making bank off of this ... but he’s not. I know NOTHING about him other than what I read on his patreon account. I’m not a “friend” shilling for him, I don’t know him... I don’t know his family... and unless I’m six degrees away from him and Kevin Bacon, I don’t know anyone who knows him.... but I suspect that if you go to his account you will think like I do, and see a hard working young man with some talent who provides us with some good quality enjoyment, and hopefully you will kick in a few bucks... I’m gonna finish my coffee, and post this on some of his other videos too and try to kickstart some interest here, and then drop him some bucks myself. (I’d already have done that, but it would require me to get off the couch and find my wallet lol... but I swear I’m gonna pledge today!! Seriously.). Help me to help him.... repost this, or your own comments, on his other vids and let’s get him motivated to continue his efforts for us.

I mean part of it isn’t human failure, he trusted the system to the point where it failed him, pushing the engine to 84% throttle from where they managed to disconnect it and throttle down, imagine them trying to takeoff after that, they would had definitely had a worse time in that situation. Honestly he choose a path that reduced damage and casualties after a hard landing situation.

Have you done a video on the Japan Airlines disaster? I think it was around 1984 or 1985 when the 747 lost Hydraulics and the plane eventually crashed into the japanese mountain. I think it may have been JAL Flight 123.
Mike Black (8 months ago)
Mate I like your videos. You flight simulator 2004 appears a lot more sharper than mine, your planes are a lot clearer too including the virtual cockpit instruments. Do you alternate between FS2004 and P3D?

Why are procedures different between airlines? I would think flying a 747 or Airbus would be the same no matter what airline its for. Procedure for bad weather landing would be the same SAS, United or Delta.
Leighton Samms (8 months ago)
rockyo59 American for instance, wherever they are going, their altimeter is set so as to show “zero” when they touchdown. They use the radar altimeter during flight.

Hello!! I love your videos and the way you tell these stories. I've always been a bit obsessed with air disasters and what is learned from each one. I'm wondering if you are planning to do a video of the December 3, 1990 runway collision at Detroit Wayne County Airport, with the DC-9 and the 727? It happened when I was a kid and was the first airplane accident that I remember seeing on the news. I was amazed that one plane was completely destroyed by fire, while the other was so minimally damaged that it went back into service. The story is here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_Wayne_County_Airport_runway_collision and the NTSB report is here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/AccidentReports/Reports/AAR9105.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwji4JHhx7rZAhWCnOAKHWU4Dx8QFjAAegQIBxAB&usg=AOvVaw2quOoszMv5JqODYmk88Zke

I’m used to watch “sloppy” US pilots causing mistakes, or USSR leftovers cause major catastrophes, but this is Scandinavian crew, as a Swede I’m feeling embarrassed. :(
Deric Gregory (5 months ago)
Obviously there are FAR more pilots and flights in the US than in a tiny country like Sweden. More flights and pilots = more chances for disasters. Common sense here. Don't let that get in the way of some good America bashing though.
Suicidal in Cleveland (5 months ago)
When glorious Scandinavians fuck up, no one dies. By contrast, when pilots from shithole countries fuck up (which is a LOT), everyone dies.

John Matthew wanna bet, at Tampa Fl , it was so bad that this knucklehead, had a hug put his plane on the ramp close to runway, so why did he do so ?So he would NOT hit another plane while texting. So he proceeded to go in ZERO/zero conditions, so he WIPED OUT HIS ENTIRE FAMILY. not sure what height he got to, but wreckage was UNRECOGNIZABLE !
