Kennedy International Airport on February 28, 1984. The flight, operated by a McDonnell Douglas DC-10, originated at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden, before a stopover at an airport in Olso, Norway. All 177 passengers and crew members onboard survived, although 115 were injured. The cause was a runway overshoot due to the crew's failure to monitor their airspeed and overreliance on the aircraft's autothrottle. The FAA "recommends" that Scandinavian change their procedures? Who the hell is actually in charge - the FAA or the airlines? The FAA needs to start ORDERING them to do X, Y or Z or be banned from flying in the US until they do. That goes for ALL airlines.

Hey fellow commenters, I have seen the ending (about donating) but haven’t really paid attention to it. It’s just sort of “there”. But I finally thought about how much I enjoy these vids, and went to the patreon site. This looks like a hard working young man, and right now he’s getting about $480 bucks a month off of this, and seems like he is really using the money for good stuff too. Let’s all pledge a few bucks ... come on... even the $1.00 a month pledge would be awesome for this young man, and I know I sure get a $1.00 month EASILY out of this. A lot of us probably think he’s making bank off of this ... but he’s not. I know NOTHING about him other than what I read on his patreon account. I’m not a “friend” shilling for him, I don’t know him... I don’t know his family... and unless I’m six degrees away from him and Kevin Bacon, I don’t know anyone who knows him.... but I suspect that if you go to his account you will think like I do, and see a hard working young man with some talent who provides us with some good quality enjoyment, and hopefully you will kick in a few bucks... I mean part of it isn’t human failure, he trusted the system to the point where it failed him, pushing the engine to 84% throttle from where they managed to disconnect it and throttle down, imagine them trying to takeoff after that, they would had definitely had a worse time in that situation. Honestly he choose a path that reduced damage and casualties after a hard landing situation.

Have you done a video on the Japan Airlines disaster? I think it was around 1984 or 1985 when the 747 lost Hydraulics and the plane eventually crashed into the japanese mountain. I think it may have been JAL Flight 123.

Why are procedures different between airlines? I would think flying a 747 or Airbus would be the same no matter what airline its for. Procedure for bad weather landing would be the same SAS, United or Delta.

rockyo59 American for instance, wherever they are going, their altimeter is set so as to show “zero” when they touchdown. They use the radar altimeter during flight.

Hello!! I love your videos and the way you tell these stories. I've always been a bit obsessed with air disasters and what is learned from each one. I'm wondering if you are planning to do a video of the December 3, 1990 runway collision at Detroit Wayne County Airport, with the DC-9 and the 727? It happened when I was a kid and was the first airplane accident that I remember seeing on the news. I was amazed that one plane was completely destroyed by fire, while the other was so minimally damaged that it went back into service. Hey Allec, did you heard news today? Iran Aseman Airlines flight #EP3704 (Tehran-Yasuj) carrying 33 people has crashed. The aircraft involved is a 24 year old ATR 72. Registration EP-ATS. MSN 391. According to our logs flight took off at 04:33 UTC. Last signal was received at 05:55 UTC when flight was at 16,975 feet and descending.

adib mouhanna And of course unlike the four engines on a 747 which can be a big fuel guzzler, the DC10 has one less engine and adequate enough to get you across the Atlantic but a bit slower.

adib mouhanna Actually it isn't really - it does depend on how it is properly run and maintained. Had McDonnell Douglas really held off the launch of the DC10 until maybe the 1990s, then it could still be around as a commercial jet in today's modern era. It could be possibly the replacement of the 747 with the same exact seating arrangement. I flew on a DC10 in 1987, and the seating arrangement is exactly like a 747.

John Matthew wanna bet, at Tampa Fl , it was so bad that this knucklehead, had a hug put his plane on the ramp close to runway, so why did he do so ?So he would NOT hit another plane while texting. So he proceeded to go in ZERO/zero conditions, so he WIPED OUT HIS ENTIRE FAMILY. not sure what height he got to, but wreckage was UNRECOGNIZABLE !

raboesperto perhaps it was too large an area or the forward area of the fuselage was less visible than the vertical stabilizer at that angle. I don't know for sure. It was a possible explanation. I know that after the FedEx MD-10 incident in FLL, they did the same thing with that aircraft.

raboesperto This was most likely done on the ground at JFK. While the investigation and clean up effort is ongoing, the aircraft probably will sit in it's position for a number of days. They brushed out the logos because it looks bad to have one of your aircraft sitting at the end of the runway, so might as well remove the branding to make it slightly less embarrassing.

IKR I cheered at 4:19. As for the plane - when it comes down to it, it's just a big pile of machinery. Now the pilots I think will be able to find work elsewhere. Maybe or maybe not as pilots, but somewhere. And that's assuming they got fired at all - it's entirely possible that they just had to go through more training to strengthen their abilities regarding coordination and landing in bad weather. I cite Mentour Pilot's video about what if pilots make a mistake to reinforce my notion of the pilots not being fired.

This was pilot error, maybe if the pilots were disciplined better, they would have done a go around, had the auto throttle worked, the plane would have been slow enough to stop, had the pilots properly monitored their speed, they would have disconnected the auto throttles and the plane would have been slow enough to stop.

Auto throttle was malfunctioning, they were too dependent on the Auto throttle. If they did decrease speed manually, the landing would have been the same as usual. There are times when the instruments malfunction but show "It works" when it truly doesn't. And yes, they should have watched the speed during the landing.

Why not do a go-around, ample speed and time? If you know the history of the auto-thrust malfunctions, just don't rely on it. A basic private pilot can land without all that automation, even in IFR (IMC) conditions. Glide slope ILS is all you really need.

I love Oslo.. When I was there, they still had the overhead wire with the skier on it as a memento to the Olympics there in 1952. I wonder if it is still there. Probably so. In 1994, I went to the Olympics in Lilehammer, but bypassed Oslo that time. I love that country, Norway! I also went up to Trondheim one summer, when I had to travel in the summer due to teaching school. I hate the heat ever since a trip in 1969 or so, when birds were dropping dead out of the trees in Madrid and I got food poisoning from a shrimp cocktail at one of the best restaurants there! After that, I never traveled in the summer again. Spring at the latest, fall and winter but never summer again! My spouse and I usually traveled in January, after the holidays, when no one else was traveling! No lines, weather in the tropics was grand (usually) and often the planes were nearly empty! We'd get bumped to first class a lot. Nice!
