Ya They was bad about the coating pealing and water rusting out the basket. Wile your at it get a new basket block hub WP389140 and nut. The block over time will ware out and will brake the ears off the basket drive. Also pick up a hub spanner. Let me know if you need help.

I'm loving that predicta in the background
Robert Przybylowicz (3 months ago)
Guy's any luck on finding a new tub for your Kenmore washer yet???
Jerry Wayton (4 months ago)
if you can find a donar for the inner tub you can fix that washer in about 30 minutes it being a short neck inner they should be plentiful
Phil Racicot (4 months ago)
I have the same problem with my 1972 Inglis washer. I have another one for it but I haven't fixed it yet! I've been relying on my 1976 Frigidaire 3 speed 1-18 for the last two years and it's holding fine. BTW, do you still have yours (it's exactly the same model as mine).
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (3 months ago)
Nope, we just have the Kenmore pair, the 1996 Maytag pair, the 2015 Speed Queens, and the compact A50 Maytag pair.
whirlpool1978 (4 months ago)
I just hope it didn’t damage the outer drum when it broke.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (3 months ago)
Fortunately it didn't.
themaritimegirl (4 months ago)
Awww, poor Spats must be heartbroken :( Hope you guys are able to get it running again.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (3 months ago)
Yup. And thanks! Gonna try :-)
T Capone (4 months ago)
Spray COSMOLINE under the agitator and through the holes in the bottom of the tub to get the outer tub coated too with heavy wax. Cosmoline prevents rust.
T Capone (4 months ago)
+Spats Bear Excellent ! POR-15 is great stuff too ! Yes that would be just fine since you have it apart. But for those who want to prevent rust without taking machine apart - spray Cosmoline would be a substitute. I sprayed my 1969 MayTag just in case. Love the old machines !
Spats Bear (4 months ago)
T Capone I’m going to be painting the outer tub with POR-15, and do the same under the agitator area once we get a new basket as well.
matthewbestdfghy (4 months ago)
If you get a new basket and or cant fix the old one turn it into a fire pit.
davida1hiwaaynet (4 months ago)
Hey Harley; I have almost the same washer! I hope this is not going to happen to mine. It has a lot of sentimental value to me, although it's not nearly as nice as yours.
Lake Nipissing (4 months ago)
Was the rust not seen when the dismantle/rebuild/restore was done? It happened so fast? Do you have a lot of minerals in the water there which would have attacked the basket? I uploaded this video just the other day when washing the bed sheets, because I though You and Spats would appreciate the power of the agitator in the Kenmore belt drive washer:  https://youtu.be/FyWAuKc68j8 Maybe I should take the agitator out and look for corrosion in the same place?
Lake Nipissing (4 months ago)
I will watch Spat's video to see the steps to remove the agitator... I am wondering how much corrosion is hidden beneath it, even though the machine is still operating fine. If you cannot find a replacement basket in good condition, I was thinking one of the best ways to resurrect basket would be with epoxy. There are epoxies which are stronger than steel and waterproof, which could join the two sections, and encapsulate the bare metal, instead of welding would only exasperate, and likely lead to more rust. Since it is hidden by the agitator, appearance would not matter, only strength and metal sealing properties.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Wow, that's quite a powerful washer! And yup, if you just get the agitator off, it's easy to see at the bottom.
Eric Purkey (4 months ago)
My mom and dad had a Kenmore washing machine like that when i was a kid.
dynatrak (4 months ago)
I had a bad feeling it was the 78 Kenmore:( If anyone can find a replacement basket, it's you and Spats. Maybe a good one will turn up next to a dumpster!
dynatrak (4 months ago)
Yep, I remember you talking about that! That would be awesome if it happened again with the washer.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
That would be SO ideal! I didn't video it, but I found a 70-series dryer next to a dumpster, I asked at the dock and they allowed me to grab some quick parts off it.
TRAIN SHIPS (4 months ago)
May be able to have it welded. The Porcelain Finish could be a Problem with welding repairs.
Damusician Strikes Back (4 months ago)
I hope you can find a new basket soon.
Emerson Collie (4 months ago)
Oh shit.. I guess what you can do in the mean time while getting a new basket for it is to JB weld the cracks and scenes to where you can use it for the time being.
randomrazr (4 months ago)
time for a new samsung jk . u def got ur moneys worth out of it though
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Ha! I tried my luck *once* with a new Samsung.
randomrazr (4 months ago)
+force311999 mines 4 years going strong.
force311999 (4 months ago)
the front loaders samsung ,that part gos in 3 years
Bluethunderboom (4 months ago)
I'm so appalled that the inner tub was rusted, and I didn't know what happen two. =(
Maxxarcade (4 months ago)
You might be able to have a patch plate fabricated and welded on there. If that's on the bottom of the drum assembly, I don't think any slight imbalance would have enough leverage to really affect it that much? I hope you can at least find a scrapped washer with a good tub if all else fails.
T Capone (4 months ago)
I did my lawn mower deck with doubled up galvanized steel sheet and then riveted it together.
Sean A806 (4 months ago)
Maxxarcade these older Whirlpool/Kenmore belt drive washers are pretty well made, but they tended to rust out, and they weren't as easy to service compared to machines like Maytag. I've seen a couple of older Kenmore and Whirlpool belt drive machines on Craigslist, but I've seen at least a dozen or so vintage Maytags pop on Craigslist and market place.
ToryTheFanMan (4 months ago)
Well that sucks :(
VegaBass25 (4 months ago)
Brutal! I'd love to hear how that happened in a machine with what appears to be so little use. Sucks that its permanent damage to a vital and non-serviceable component. You could quite possibly have a very, very experienced machine shop or welder repair it worst case. Keeping everything aligned would be very difficult... Best of luck finding a replacement wash basket guys.
ARednecksLife (4 months ago)
Time to go all new
CrestwoodRocks (4 months ago)
My 1996 Kenmore I had, We ended up having to get our basket replaced around 1999 or 2000. the new basket looked a little different than the original basket (mainly the hole design). Your new basket might have a design like the newer baskets if you order one.
petermazbabie (4 months ago)
Sorry to hear I’m sure you can get another tub for that machine someone out there in you’re following will be able to help you. At least you have the Speed Queen so no back up of laundry there and no need to go to laundromat, thank God!
petermazbabie (4 months ago)
Harley Badger Oh yes I forgot about that you have the dependable care set.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
and the two Maytag pairs ;-)
FrostbiteXZ (4 months ago)
im sure this washer can still be fixed and where the rust was shown in the video it might be possible to scrape away the rust and put rust inhibitors around the area and have it welded or re-enforced with new metal but im sure in any case its still fixable
Robert Przybylowicz (4 months ago)
I Knew it!!! When I saw your video yesterday and listened to you talk, I thought to myself I bet the Kenmore went down??? I feel bad for you guys because I know how it feels to have something that you took pride in and then suddenly have something happen to it!!! I too had a few of my prize washer's let me down after rebuilding them and yes it can be frustrating but I know that you will get it up and running again!!! Sorry Guy's
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Thank you. We'll get it back up.. Fortunately it's not dead, just hibernating :-)
kraig 88 (4 months ago)
That's even terrible. Won't be able to wash laundry.
nerdywolfi (4 months ago)
Does this count as an Octember fail?
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
YES. A late one, but yes indeed.
Christopher Murray (4 months ago)
www.repairclinic.com make sure you give them the model number of that washer.
Christopher Murray (4 months ago)
+Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley okay. You may want to find and appliance junkyard nearby. Google an appliance junkyard in the area. Or....find a Whirlpool washer of that year.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Unfortunately not available.
batterymaker (4 months ago)
You should be able to fix that fairly easily, whirlpool didn’t change their general design for a good while back then. What was designed in the fifties was made well over thirty years. If you can’t JB weld might be the solution
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Spats will have to explain better, but this is a rare model with a deeper tub (?) or something about the height of the drive mechanism (?)
Chris S (4 months ago)
Is it possible to have it welded back together??
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Probably not, it would have to be perfectly straightened and balanced, then again after welding.
fgbags76 (4 months ago)
Now is a good time to find a replacement with more options and dual action!
Seth Horst (4 months ago)
Oh no! Well, unfortunately appliances can't last forever, but they sure can last a while. Also you have a philco predicta TV I see in the background, cool those are extremely rare.

+mspysu79 XD...
mspysu79 (4 months ago)
And an extreme pain in the butt to work on....
jaykay18 (4 months ago)
When I watched that, I got the feeling like I did when the engine in the Bluick blew up. Of course, it's a critical, not-easy-to-obtain part. Bad news all around. Now I do remember watching a bunch of washes in this and there was always some sort of rubbing/banging during the spin cycle. Could that have possibly been it being cracked partway around, ready to fully let go?
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (3 months ago)
+jaykay18 Yup. Stay tuned though, picking up a donor machine today!!!
jaykay18 (4 months ago)
Ok, I called it.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Yup, that was the sound. I always thought it was the tripod legs against the cabinet.
Spats Bear (4 months ago)
jaykay18 Very likely... I couldn’t track down the sound until I took it apart. Plus it didn’t do it all the time, only occasionally. That explains it.
f23948 (4 months ago)
Oh no!
Trance88 (4 months ago)
Awww. I knew it was the Kenmore washer. Dang it! Yeah, it's understandable when critical parts fail, and there are no easy to find replacement parts. Hopefully a parts washer or something will come up at some point soon.
matthewbestdfghy (4 months ago)
At least you have a back up machine imagen if you didn't.
Harley Badger - from Spats & Harley (4 months ago)
Yup!
FireAlarmTechGuy4444 (4 months ago)
hopefully you can find it a new tub otherwise. RIP Kenmore 1978-2018.
