Machines of the USPS

951 ratings | 173114 views
Every wondered what kind of machines the USPS uses to sort your mail? When I worked for the USPS, I made this video to show some of the systems used to sort letters, flats (magazine-sized), and packages.

I really wanted to see the Apps machine more. That’s what I work on at my distribution center.

Now this is how , packages could go wrong and eighter get lost or miss shipped
RaceGrooves (11 months ago)
Or it's how half a billion packages get sorted every single day.

I really enjoy your video!
Streetcar1664 (11 months ago)
This is a great tour of what goes on at a USPS sorting facility. Sadly some people want to call it a DPS. I blocked those who did that. This is to be a teaching tool about how our mail is sorted. The USPS has so many machines that sorts our mail and they want to make sure that it is safe to ship.
MIchael Sr. (1 year ago)
wait a minute!!! did i see a 3 wheel tricycle near the DPS machine at 6:57!!! what is it used for
MIchael Sr. (1 year ago)
RaceGrooves (1 year ago)
The building is so big that the mechanics get those tricycles to get to maintenance calls as soon as possible.
MissNebulosity (1 year ago)
Your "mule" is like a mini train with those carriages! haha
MissNebulosity (1 year ago)
LMAO The commentary is HILARIOUS. "wee, that was fun, let's go get back in line." ..."I have noooo idea how those stickers got there." LOLOLOL This is my favorite video on youtube for the whole week.
A Thompson (1 year ago)
I came here for the mail sorting machines but my question is about that lambo with the different wheels. How rare is that error and what is that hot wheels worth because of it?
RaceGrooves (1 year ago)
It's pretty rare to have an error like that but it does happen. As to what it's worth, it's only worth what somebody will pay. With it being a Lambo, that does help increase the value =) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu-eOkG80Lc

I don't get it. They got all these machines doing the work and they still go postal.

Excellent video, Mark! Also, I press like on this video!

Watching your video really has given me a new respect for all of the work that goes into shipping a product. I can easily foresee an instance where Amazon and some of the other big box retailers setup shop right next to the original mail sorters. Because no matter how many jobs can get cut for the purposes of automation, it'll never be enough.. One day most work will be done with robotics and advanced AI and when that happens, they'll have to pay us all a living wage.
Shinya Hudson (1 year ago)
One of the reasons videos of facilities aren't allowed in USPS facilities is terrorism. Basically 99.999% of U.S. residents get mail from the U.S. Postal Service. Any postal facility can become the entry point to mass mailings and biohazard attacks. Why expose those risks?
MissAmazanda (1 year ago)
I hear people complain about the USPS but honestly it's amazing how few packages they actually lose or whatnot considering the millions of packages they have to process. I've used them for ebay since 2007 so I had to watch and see how it was done.
John Magic (1 year ago)
Their system is truly remarkable. I've been on eBay since 1998 and I've only lost 1 package and that could have been the seller. UPS has also lost one of mine but I rarely use them. It's USPS vs. Others 100:1. For just a few dollars they can 99.99% of the time get anything anywhere sometimes the very next day no matter what. Remarkable. They need more Youtube videos highlighting stuff like this.
marsh neff (1 year ago)
That was great .... thank you so much ! Your video should be on the official website!! Hey I guess it is! Lol I just was laughing ...my first day or night rather at the plant ( after twenty years of delivery) I took pictures of DBs running and some guy walked by and said ..... o don’t do that....freaked me out. But everybody especially mechanics do it . How do you double check those belt patterns....ya think? That was great !
marsh neff (1 year ago)
Hey if I could send some of mine I would but I am not a steward lol and I don’t think it would be as funny to management as it is to me ! Did you actually film this from your mule? Amazing ..... I will be showing this to others tonight , thanks for your creativity! We are maintenence mechanics in Palatine plant by Chicago midnight Tour.

Does the cameraman have tinnitus now, after 20+ years there? You might be surprised how many P.O. workers have it. Working many years in a noise fest of machines is not good for your health. All these machines were supposedly bought to reduce the workforce. Rather laughable, imo, because in the main building I worked at, there were more workers when I left in 2001 than when I started in 1974. The difference? More casual employees, paid at a lower salary.
Ineedstone (2 years ago)
steveo288 it is a noisy environment thats for sure -clerk usps
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
You have way more than a couple APPS by the way I have been installing/moving/retrofitting these for years. In Chicago nearly done with an install this week too. DIOS/AFCS/CIOS are pretty mesmerizing to watch the first time you see them after seeing them a few times it's just another normal day in the USPS. The only machine off the top of my head that has the APPS beat on pure size is SSIU I think there are around 20 in the country give or take, but only at the NDCs now those would be interesting to see being installed. I also understand that there will be a new contract (possibly next year) and the bidding is down between Lockheed and Siemens. With any luck solid work for three whole years for me if Lockheed gets it. There are also some tricks that the USPS could do to up the amount of processing on an APPS, but it would require removing a a whole side FSD/Inducts and installing three supplementary inducts in it's place - unlikely they would toss out all that equipment though.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
And to note that would be a closed loop APPS we have 3 different versions of the machine closed, open, and L some even have walk overs some go up an incline.

We used to have a sorting facility in my home town but due to cutbacks it got downsized. Now all of our mail goes 165 miles east to a sorting facility then finally out to the destinations. It's not so bad when I ship items going east but the other way around it adds a full day to the delivery time. Nothing we can do about it but just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Good video. I am a mechanic on conveyors in Austin Tx, 15.5 years. We don't have a robot but we have a tray management system that uses robotics. Best job I ever had.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
Well you might get APPS BINS bin expansion more or less just more bins to sort to. We just did some supplimentary induct addons all across the US. Which is basically a dumper with an incline then optional conveyors to a work station where two people can face the mail bar code up then feed the pieces one at a time there is a dedicated scale (same as the new one on your semi-auto you just installed(last year as well right?)). I want to say your is an open loop, but it has been years since I was in that facility. Should you all ever need some help let me know seems like this site I am on is the last thing lockheed has scheduled for this year other than a bin expansion somewhere. I have applied at the USPS for maintenance positions, but have never even gotten a call to take the test.
Thomas Moore (2 years ago)
Yes we have one. It is getting another modification soon. I work on Barney, PPCs and the LCUS.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
Pretty sure there is an APPS in Austin I seem to remember doing the EN-Retrofits to it back in 06 or 07 something like that?

'What facility is this? I'm a mail handler @ the Baltimore GMF (Main Post Office). Our APPS machine doesn't look anywhere near as clean as the one in this video. Good video though.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
Dude I have never seen a clean APPS(after moving one I always end up turning the hotel shower black from the dust) trust me there is no such thing in existence(it is impossible to clean ~80% of the machine because of the chutes / sack racks). Look at the horse heads probably enough tape to mail 50 packages on those things(I would be amazed to see an APPS that stayed clean after install and test). I thought that they went to only NDCs and BMCs / P&DCs now?

No Singulator? I wish I had taken video of our Primary PSMs before they removed them. We still have the Secondary PSMs but they're not as impressive. The APPS machine does a finer sort with a much smaller footprint, but requires much more maintenance.
boomermg (2 years ago)
At the Denver NDC we called the singulator (the strangulator). Gave the USPS 28 years, first as a MPE, then retired as an ET-10.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
SSIUs are only at the NDCs that would be Seattle, LA, San Fran, Denver for that side of the country.

Question, I'm really scared right now because my incomming package has been staying at ISC New York : "Processed Through Facility ISC NEW YORK NY(USPS) " for days now. Usually it takes 1-2 days and there will be an update when I ordered online internationally before. Is my item held for customs? Will they take away and steal my item? Please help..
danny1460 (2 years ago)
takes even longer leaving our country but that not their fault that mail is extremely slow in Ghana! Takes week to get there (13 hour flight) then another 2-4 weeks to reach a suburb in same town as international airport !!!!
Mark Dymek (2 years ago)
Angela - it's sitting on a platform or in a post con waiting to be delivered.
TheGamingEdgeHD (2 years ago)
Laudium Enoch (2 years ago)
Eventhough its a month later this comment is for others and not you. That completely normal by the way. Once its cleared customs its treated as a priority 2 day mail. So once it hits the USA, its usually 2-3 days till you get it. Sometimes it longer. I have seen scans of packages looking like they were moving backwards to still show up on time. So its weird sometimes, but I have NEVER not gotten any mail.

Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
I'm working in there now looks to be fairly SOP from what I can see on the floor I am on.... a good 12 or so DIOS (letter mail), APPS we are installing, Interlox sorter, probably some other stuff somewhere else, but we don't explore much. At least the Chicago(Palentine) site has an actual lunch cafeteria where you can order food. I think the O'Hare site had one as well where you could order food, but that was years ago.
Laudium Enoch (2 years ago)
lol I heard Chicagos mail is terrible.
L Newton (3 years ago)
Just wondering if you could do a short video about mail that gets caught in the sorting machines, or machine jams, and the way the mail pieces look afterwards. On a local Facebook group there are a lot of pictures being posted of damaged letters, most look like machine damage to me, but they are crying foul and trying to say someone is tampering with the mail. I can't seem to find any videos or even photos or web pages talking about it. I ship over 16,000 pieces through the USPS every year and in the last two years have only had to make three claims. I know tampering happens but believe it to be extremely rare.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
Generally there are some employees that are dedicated to putting packages back together if they get torn up. It does happen I have seen it happen when we run live mail tests. Generally things move really quickly no one working there really cares what is in your package it gets processed tossed into a bin then delivered to you by hand. USPS also has these hanging one way glass hallways everywhere so there is always a chance you are being watched even if you are an employee. I'm sure Race will confirm that those things go every which way in every USPS facility.
RaceGrooves (3 years ago)
+L Newton Sorry, I no longer work for the USPS. I resigned a couple years ago because my YouTube channel was doing very well. Generally speaking, mail does get damaged from the machinery but with any organization, the possibilities of employees tampering with the mail exist. I'm not authorized to speak on behalf of the USPS (whether I was still working there are not) but the vast number of employees are dedicated to their jobs. Judging by your numbers, 3 claims out of 16,000 is a great number!
Julia Lewis (3 years ago)

Far better than UK's Parcel Force owned by Royal Mail which is suppose to be the world's first mail service. Awful service haven't seen my watch for a couple of years. They also blame and charge you for the loss. Just read the reviews. It's the 1# worst mail service, even worser than China. USPS is still government owned and they sometimes have honest workers.

I just wanna know why do USPS lose packages like they do and not update the tracking system like they should????? My package hasn't been scanned for 2 days now and I was supposed to receive it on March 31, 2015 the last scan that it got was on March 30 2015 at 3:55am departing from California and I live in North Carolina. Thats unacceptable, it does no good to have a tracking system if they aren't updating it as they should. I wouldn't be surprised if this package was lost...AGAIN.
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
Packages sometimes fall off machines or get caught in weird places. It's pretty rare that it would be missed during mail search after the run, but normally they will find it. Now I have also seen packages that made it somewhere where there is no hope of someone finding it unless they take parts off the machine in that case you are SOL, but when they take the machine apart in 5 years to move it - it will be found( and delivered I think).
BOYCOTT PC (3 years ago)
Classical Rips (4 years ago)
@BG Slamimball If you got tracking on the package, which is only $1 extra, then they can see where the package got lost and they have about an 80% success rate of finding it.
Classical Rips (4 years ago)
@Akeia Campbell No, you can get insurance of any amount on any package. $50 of insurance and tracking comes free with priority mail, but you can increase that amount to whatever you want.
Classical Rips (4 years ago)
@BG Slamimball No, if you have tracking on your package they can see the last place the package was in the country and find it about 80% of the time.

they must have prettied up things for this filming because that's not the nice/neat way it arrives at our office.  letter trays are haphazardly thrown on shelves, almost no green lids on anything, all parcels pretty much dropped without regard to size or shape into the same bins for us to sort & deliver!
RaceGrooves (4 years ago)
@Randal Alford The flat tubs/letter trays that have lids/sleeves are heading for the airlines. They have to be strapped because they get tossed onto a plan. There is no need for the added steps for mail that is traveling by rolling stock on trucks. (I don't work for the USPS anymore as I am full-time YouTube now.)

RaceGrooves what exactly do the pse clerks do? I got the job and I’m a little nervous . Especially working in a big facility
RaceGrooves (4 years ago)
Sorry for the delay in replying. Santa Clarita is huge. It takes five minutes to walk from the parking lot to the furthest part of the building. That being said, it is just like any other processing facility. I was originally from Pasadena P&DC but left around 2005 and everybody else was gone a few years ago. It's only a carrier annex now. I know that Santa Clarita has been trying to absorb Bakersfield for quite a while so it's only a matter of time.

@RaceGrooves Thanks for the straight forward answer. People have been handing me guesses left and right. General delivery is where you pickup your mail at desk instead of home delivery (usually when you dont have a stable home address). PO boxes and mail holds ect. have since taken over and confused things. But GD still exists. And not many seem to understand it. Last time im ever using it..

How are the package addresses read? Is the machine able to read the text written on packages like letters?

hup2thepenguin yes. theres a camera inside of the machine that takes a picture then software on a computer turns the letters into something the computer understands.
RaceGrooves (4 years ago)

@RaceGrooves Ok, thanks! I do a lot of shipping so I am curious about the processes.

@hup2thepenguin Most packages have a bar code on them when the label is printed. If not, then the process of taking a picture and being remotely read is used but no barcode is printed on the box.

@RaceGrooves How do you get authorization to film there?
RaceGrooves (5 years ago)
Yeah, I wasn't supposed to but I don't work for the USPS anymore. I'm Race Grooves full-time!

How many people work at USPS?? About half of 'em
Ritgar001 (2 years ago)
On paper a single sided APPS should be able to process 5500 mail pieces per hour good luck getting 10 people to each sort 550 mail pieces an hour that would be something like 10 per minute! Also note flats generally are all the same type here is the same magazine you know where to look for the barcode. Here is random package #50 who knows what side the sender put the information on.
Riccardo Sirchia (2 years ago)
the only mail volume that is declining is flats - priority packages are on an increase. Although they say that the manual sorting of packages is more tedious than flats? Any idea why this is?
RaceGrooves (5 years ago)
Yes, I think that at the high point, the USPS had over 800,000 employees. With declining mail volume, the ranks had to be reduced. I resigned in December 2014.

r u supposed to photo?  I know at my job cameras are forbidden

how come packages got lost?
WizardWithNoPowers 069 (5 years ago)
They can fall off of the belt or go into the wrong bin. Worst case is a worker steals it.
Garret (5 years ago)
It makes me feel uncomfortable that a very expensive item and fragile item I ordered is going through all of that processing
NONE (4 years ago)
@Garret the parrot It is the same in FedEx/UPS.
oisiaa (4 years ago)
That is the purpose of performance oriented packaging. There are literally engineering disciplines that focus on how to package things so they don't get broken and you can bet that automated processing equipment is factored into this. Ebay seller packing....that's another story.
Ashley Randolph-Bennett (5 years ago)
You don't think UPS and FedEx carry everything by hand from the time you give it to them until it arrives to the destination do you? Lol there are millions of pieces of mail at one time so if there wasn't an "assembly line" type processing it wouldn't get there for weeks, maybe months!!

Really cool video, you filmed and explained that well.  It's fascinating watching those machines work.
Daniel Diner (5 years ago)
The package unloading dump made me cringe so hard, as a frequent shipper. Likely going to enhance packaging from now on.

Now that your last work day there has come and gone, what do you plan to do next? Did they find out about that video yet?
RaceGrooves (5 years ago)
Some co-workers and Supervisors knew about this video. I was careful to not show co-workers, any addresses, nor any security measures. No more Postal videos from me but lots of toy videos =)

Awesome video! How are large flat rate boxes handled (The Game board one)? I have 15 of them with over 50lbs of stuff in it, I'm just worried one of them bursting open because they are so heavy.
RaceGrooves (5 years ago)
I haven't worked in the Priority Mail area in several years. As far as I know, those boxes would be handled the same way. I would suggest that you use appropriate padding to protect your items.
