Having lived in America and now living in Japan, it's interesting to see how very different these two food environments are. I've seen comments on another one of my videos about low carb saying something like "Oh sure, you can lose weight on low carb, which is why all the rice eating Japanese people are so thin, right?" So with this video (and maybe the last one), I'm hoping to show that the diet over here is more complex than just "high carb" 0:00 - Intro: America & Japan 0:42 - People walk more in Japan 1:35 - Portion sizes are smaller 2:30 - America and Soda 2:40 - Rice vs. Wheat 3:50 - Fermented foods keeping the gut healthy 5:14 - Meat consumption is balanced with Fish consumption 5:54 - Muscle meat and organ meat balance 7:57 - Green Tea 8:43 - School Lunches in Japan A pdf of the transcript with links to my sources can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/17282506 - - - Big thanks to Greg from "Life Where I'm From" for letting me use some shots from his video "Tokyo by Train" ! - https://goo.gl/8EvfNU (They're the professional shots near the start of people walking in Kamakura / around the train station) -Make sure and check out his channel - it's very interesting, especially if you're interested in Japan: https://goo.gl/s1Xfvt - - - Featured Music: Broke for Free - Playground Pigeon Broke for Free - IF For Business inquiries: joseph.everett.wil@gmail.com

I heard of "the french paradox" in school, I think it could be an idea for a future video. The thing is, the average french person intakes a lot more fat than the average american but the population is healthier. Not the mention the cultural habbits of Bread and Cheese.

Japan has high cancer rates because of the nuclear bombs dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I've been to Japan, and I can say that they are not very healthy. The traditional Japanese diet, however, is quite healthy. The diet of a modern japanese, is loaded with white bread, fast food, noodles and loads of unhealthy snacks. They might have an easier time staying thin, but they have a tendency to increase in fat around their organs, which is arguably more unhealthy than gaining elsewhere. I'd say the current lifespan of the average japanese is more a cause of the older diet, and less the japanese being healthy overall.

They're healthy because they have some serious cult mentality going on in their culture, like a hive-mind you wouldn't believe exists unless you look at North Korea. Part of this cult mentality hive-mind is the excessive "fat-shaming" that occurs, where being fat is seen (rightly so) as an illness and a sign of health problems. Go to a doctor and tell him you're feeling unwell, and he might ask you how much you weigh and that you should lose weight; no, I'm not joking, this seriously happens. When you live in a society that is extremely homogeneous and extremely xenophobic like Japan is, coupled with the cult mentality hive-mind that runs throughout the nation's culture, being fat is like having leprosy. You will do anything and everything to avoid it, so as to not be socially stigmatized and outcast from the rest of society. Add this to the fact that many Japanese food products are not complete trash like in American fast-food, and that most Japanese eat home-cooked meals and live in a society that looks very similar to America in the 1950's, and you start to see why America is so full of disgusting fat fucks with no self-control. We need to change our society, change our culture, change the way food is "made" and change our zeitgeist thought processes, go back to the way America was 70 years ago (minus the segregation), and then these problems will dissipate.

Sushi also helps. Honestly the only way to get me to eat much fish. Cooked fish just takes the flavor out. But sushi is very expensive in the US and it's not safe to prepare yourself really.

In my point of view, those portions aren't too little. But maybe even in Europe portions are smaller than in U.S.A. However, some european countries (Italy) have a large percentage of obesity. It's the overrated Mediterranean diet. If I eat 2726 kalories daily, I get fat. I can eat only 1000/1200 kalories daily to stay in shape. If I do sport. I still can't go over 1500, and this is true for the whole country.

ughhh, in italy we get around 1200- 1500 kcal per day per person in average. It means we eat here even less than japanese people? italian food is basically vegetables, pasta, meat and fish.
Никто как Бог! Арх.Михаил (25 days ago)
breakfast - capuccino and briosch, 150 kcal approx. lunch - pasta with vegetables or meat, 500 kcal approx. dinner - meat or fish with vegetables 450 kcal approx. you may have sometimes during day "merenda", means pause food. It is usually a cup of coffee espresso with a little biscotto, pastry. Or some yogurt with dry fruit such as hazelnuts or grapes. That's all actually for an average italian.

I wonder if Ivor Cummins' view applies here that it is the physical structure of the carb foods - not the fiber content - that mostly matters for metabolic derangement (insulin resistance development). It seems to me that rice (even white rice) would maintain its physical structure well and stimulate the L cells (pancreatic stimulating cells) to a lesser degree and K cells (satiety stimulating cells) to a greater degree despite being "processed" carbohydrates more than other types of foods. Anyway, it's just a random thought I had, but it might explain everything observed without the need to use a bunch of explanations.

What? Eating out in Japan was so much cheaper than eating out in America. A bowl of ramen after tax and tip in America is like 15 to 17 bucks, in Japan it was like 7 to 9 bucks. Sushi was also cheaper in Japan.

Sausage and hot dogs are made out of organ meats, and they are common in the US. Cold water fish are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, and meat is high in Omega-6 fatty acids, which may well be the most important difference between the US and Japanese diets. Caloric intake is probably another important difference between US and Japanese diets.

Cancer is the mortality cell, its the kill switch. I think the whole ethos in Japan brings health benefits, their manners, the respect for personal space, their deliberate actions, the ritualistic processes they all fascinate me and of all the places I would put on my bucket list Japan would be at the top.

Just curious how does comparisons work exactly. Like i get that for example the US consumed several times the amount of soda as Japan, but in my head i'm thinking, "well... isnt that normal? Theres like 3 times as many people in America"
ntnnot (1 month ago)
Quite high average amount of ingested calories per person in America. Way over the average daily expenditure.
jerrydesu (1 month ago)
Biggest reason is small portion sizes, healthier food, and a lot more walking and bicycling to and from train stations. Sometimes even sprinting on and off trains to make it to the next one. It's normal to see not just young but middle aged and older people riding bicycles and walking. Almost unheard of in the U.S. where it's normally only young people. The U.S. is a car driving country - even short trips. Very rare to see people walk to and from the store unless they are poor and can't afford a car. Sweets have much less sugar. Convenience stores like 7-11 in Japan have much healthier foods than the typical junk food in the U.S. Green tea is known as longevity tea. It is not in just tea but shows up in all kinds of food in Japan. Health care in Japan is much cheaper than in the U.S. They have a universal health care insurance system with tightly controlled costs and insurance is required by law.

Japanese people aren't idiots like westerners. And they haven't bought into the whole fast-food craze that started in the 70s and 80s in the west, and is STILL going on. The US consumes most fast-food out of all the nations on the planet. Fast-food = disease and cancer.

I'm very happy that I live in PAKISTAN because according to this video USA don't care about their diet while here in Pakistan we usually eat typical dishes Most of the time in breakfast we have Parhata(dish made by wheat and little oil) with tea and with leftovers of yesterday. Lunch is usually pulses with boiled rice , or some salan(cooked vegetable or meat) and dinner is that salan of lunch with Roti(made out of wheat)

I love macrobiotic food, which is Japanese health food - brown, not white rice etc. On the Macrobiotic School farm, we cooked with gluten to make seitan, and they have fu etc from gluten. "It's not the gluten, it's the glyphosate" as the saying goes. Farmers were persuaded to spray their ripe crops with Glyphosate to dry them quicker! Can you believe it! We also made little pickles with rice bran, or proper salt in a salad press, plus we made natto. I loved it.

I'm sorry, but this is a ridiculous pretense and video. You just cannot generalize or compare one of the most homogeneous cultures on Earth to an extremely heterogeneous one. BMI is not an indicator of health, I do track sprinting and lift weights and never been sick in 2yrs, my BMI is higher than average. I've lived in Japan too and people there get sick just like anyone else, particularly your salarymen, they drink like fish, smoke like chimneys and stress till they kill themselves... Healthy? Diet is only a tiny part of the equation.
