Having lived in America and now living in Japan, it's interesting to see how very different these two food environments are. I've seen comments on another one of my videos about low carb saying something like "Oh sure, you can lose weight on low carb, which is why all the rice eating Japanese people are so thin, right?" So with this video (and maybe the last one), I'm hoping to show that the diet over here is more complex than just "high carb" 0:00 - Intro: America & Japan 0:42 - People walk more in Japan 1:35 - Portion sizes are smaller 2:30 - America and Soda 2:40 - Rice vs. Wheat 3:50 - Fermented foods keeping the gut healthy 5:14 - Meat consumption is balanced with Fish consumption 5:54 - Muscle meat and organ meat balance 7:57 - Green Tea 8:43 - School Lunches in Japan A pdf of the transcript with links to my sources can be found here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/17282506 - - - Big thanks to Greg from "Life Where I'm From" for letting me use some shots from his video "Tokyo by Train" ! - https://goo.gl/8EvfNU (They're the professional shots near the start of people walking in Kamakura / around the train station) -Make sure and check out his channel - it's very interesting, especially if you're interested in Japan: https://goo.gl/s1Xfvt - - - Featured Music: Broke for Free - Playground Pigeon Broke for Free - IF For Business inquiries: joseph.everett.wil@gmail.com

Part of it is their common sense culture of treating people with integrity and respect unlike most of the rest of the world where it's the 'every man for himself, shaft everyone you can to get ahead over the next guy' attitude. I currently live in australia, a lot of people are obnoxious assholes here and people's behavior makes a HUGE difference to health.

I just enjoy my life. Eat whatever I want except when not hygienic and do regular workout. I'm not a bodybuilder though but I'm also not a fatty bag. My BMI is around 24.3 and my body fat is 11% of my total weight. Now isn't it cosidered as healthy?😎😎

kimchi is Japanese food. Koreans are trying to steal it. Japanese has been eating kimchi since Edo Era. Korea only started around 1900.

Wish I was a traveler. Must be nice to eat well and have a healthier life overall. This country does not even promote family values anymore. Japan, you are awesome!

One thing not mentioned in this video is how _shameful_ it is in the Japanese culture to be "overweight". There is SO MUCH pressure by society to be thin, for both men and women, and this leads to a country-wide epidemic of eating disorders and depression (of course, there are many other types of societal pressure that contribute to depression in Japan). Yes, the food is healthier, and yes, the proportions are generally smaller, but there are also tons of unhealthy food that you can easily binge on, and you can always eat more of anything... It's just not done in Japan because people think it's unacceptable to be fat.
cokechang (8 days ago)
Also, culturally and socially Japan as well as other East Asian cultures are pretty demanding when it comes to appearances. Unlike the more tolerable west, society is generally pretty harsh on out of shape people.

3682kcal/day? That's close to twice my maintenance calories, and I'm 6'1", 220lb and I exercise upwards of 5 hours a week And let's stipulate: those Yank calories ain't *quailty* calories - you feel me? Even 2726 a day is a shitload. Maybe on a day where I drink more than a litre of wine... which is most days lol. *HAIL KEK!!!!*

The more I learn about this stuff, the more I feel resentment towards my parents. I can't help it.They didn't know any better, but growing up in the 90s as a kid, I ate mostly toast, cereal, and poptarts. 90% of what I ate was a shelf stable processed food. All through highschool I had chips and Dr.Pepper for lunch. I have so much resentment for that lifestyle, and I feel so powerless that there was just no life line back then. I'm almost 30 now, and now I'm in a well informed place. I feel desperate to undo a lifetime of damage.

6:17 Organ meat is common in Chinese cuisine too, traditionally for the same reason as well. Besides chicken & pig liver, there're also intestines and chicken feet, and even pig blood cakes (in some parts of the world). But eating these can raise cholesterol levels too IIRC

I'm really enjoying the information presented on your channel. I love how you back everything with relevant studies and hypothesis of why there are contradicting information out there. Most videos regarding health are targeting fads without support to their claims. Thank you for putting in the time to put together these videos!

The worlds highest life expectancy is Hong Kong not Japan !! Hong Kong is very polluted, works all day with no exercise and smokes a lot of cigarettes, lives in tiny apartments and very stressful lifestyle! So it's all genetics I think .

Japan has a culture that enmeshes "shame & honor " in almost every aspect of their lives from grades, to weight, and even what kind of job you have & how much you make . And the endless societal expectations don't just end there as there is always constant reminders to avoid " bringing shame " on your family , and others which in turn continues to perpetuate this deeply ingrained - life long duty to preserve honor , and avoid shame .

L.A. November 2019 (20 days ago)
Yeah, this is kinda misleading. Japanese are seeing skyrocketing type 2 diabetes, and being thin, doesn't necessarily mean you're "healthy". There are all kinds of health problems brewing in Japan, just like everywhere else. And just wait until the full effects of the ongoing nuclear disaster take hold.... And like for like, food is NOT more expensive in Japan, I've lived there too.

The percentage of income spent on food is proportional to the income, though. The less money you have overall, the more of it you spend on food relatively to other things. That’s why we say that sales tax is regressive, as opposed to, say, income tax, because it disproportionately affects the poor.

how did you get to live in japan?
Large Vessel (21 days ago)
No dude i could have saved you a bunch of time. Thank you for the video. But its basically just social pressure. Its acceptable to be fat in america. Not to mention how we were raised on the hilarious fake food pyramid. But i would also have to say not that i agree with the fat acceptance movement however people have different metabolisms because of our ethnicity. Japan is mostly a single race from that exact environment. Im a night owl because my ancestors kept watch at night and im fat because there was a lot of times when there wasnt a lot of food because of the snow. And since im a american i dont eat well. its not a excuse im fat becuase i dont take care of myself. It was easier when i could work out. But after a old lady ran a light and smashed into me it wasnt as easy for me to work out like i used to to regulated my weight. However i still come back to the fact that its just much more acceptable to be fat here than japan. If it wasnt acceptable i probably wouldnt be fat. im just being honest. Thats the difference between a rep and a dem. We accept our failures as our own. we dont look to blame someone else.

‘Why Are People So Healthy In Japan’ - 😂LMAO, what a joke. I was born and raised in Tokyo (池袋 Ikebukuro) in a military family (father). This included my tour of duty with the U.S. Navy (横須賀 Yokosuka) for a total of about 30 years in Japan. Speak the language like a native. Have you ever visited a hospital in Japan? It is an ABSOLUTE MADHOUSE of patients, from dusk ‘till dawn. The doctors there look like ZOMBIES from working so much overtime. Every Japanese friend I know has some kind of health issue. My Japanese friend just dropped dead at 56. Another one is on kidney dialysis at 55. Most everybody I know is on SEVERAL medications. I’m a 60 yr old American and they all envy how healthy I am. The TRUTH is always hiding behind the curtain.
Tykira (22 days ago)
They don't eat too much unhealthy food everyday and they move around a lot. Plus they drink more water and less sugary teas than sodas.

One thing to remember about Japanese food is it generally has a high salt content due partly to extensive use of soya source. Quite alot of Japanese people have high blood pressure.

annie (23 days ago)
To all of those people saying that Japan actually *isn't* that healthy - his point is that in comparison to America, Japan is PHYSICALLY more healthy. It's undeniable that Japan culture cultivates a high amount of stress and thus mental health issues. However, generally speaking, Japan culture promotes activeness, has an easier access to healthier foods, and is also very weight and health conscious. Every country/place/culture has their unhealthy and healthy aspects, this video focuses on the healthy aspects in Japan. We GET THAT THERE ARE UNHEALTHY/HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS FROM BOTH COUNTRIES. You don't have to point it out saying "Well I'm American and I'm healthy" AKJSDKLAJF;LKASDJF; that's not what this is about
