Mutant Plant Glows When Attacked | National Geographic

2087 ratings | 51055 views
When plants are wounded, they send out warning signals that spread to other leaves, raising the alarm and activating defense mechanisms for the undamaged areas. Now, researchers have captured this burst of activity in a set of mesmerizing videos that are helping to explain the tricky topic of plant “intelligence.” ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe #NationalGeographic #Plants #Mutants About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. Scientists genetically modified these plants to glow when attacked, revealing the way in which plants communicate danger to other undamaged areas. If you'd like to learn more, you can read on here: https://on.natgeo.com/2NHMLoC

Could this be interpreted as "pain"? Animals would have used sodium levels for signalling in their nerves correct?

National Geographic title is misleading. It is not a mutant, it is a GMO.

Excellent, thanks very much. Now use that to check different environmental conditions (including pollutions, electromagnetic (the complete spectrum), magnetic forces & acoustic waves (complete spectrum) with a large range of intensities. A whole new world will open up. Danger is that for some people the plants will become their friends, LOL.
MrSilvestris (21 days ago)
I would think these are not the pejorative "Mutant", but the more constructive form, "Mutated".

Predatorial insects and animals could figure out where other incects are in the dark when they see plants start glowing like this, if they figure out why the plants glow.

Messege to vegans: Plants are also alive so it would be cruel to eat them. It is much better to not eat anymore and just die because of starvation.
John The Great (1 month ago)
+Phantastic Drago In short they are helpless and they heavily rely on wasps to protect them from caterpillars and poisons depending on the species. If enough leaves were removed from a sapling, it will surely die. In the case of trees, they cannot fight back or run away from loggers.
Phantastic Drago (1 month ago)
Yes plant's are alive but they don't have the capacity to feel pain. There is no evolutionary benefit for plants to have the ability to feel pain as they cannot run away from the cause of it.
RS1 (1 month ago)
It's really creepy when you start thinking that plants are actually alive just like any animal. Anyway what is the defense? Video didn't say... Only thing I can think of is maybe it starts to taste bad.

Plants feel pain
Winslow Wilson (1 month ago)
Back in the 1960's experiments on plants showed that plants can even recognize individual human beings. An experiment where one person goes into a green house and begins yelling and attacking the plants, tearing some of their leaves and pulling others out. A different person goes in at a later time and treats the plants kindly by watering them and talking gently, touching their leaves in a gentle way. As this goes on, the monitoring devices applied to the plants, sensing chemical changes in the plants, showed that when the aggressive person would later come back in to the area, all the plants would go on high alert.

"I had an experience many, many years ago and know it took place and _was not a hallucination, since I've never had a hallucination"_ That really is upside-down logic. Every experience you've ever had was new once; that you'd not had them before was no bar. Clearly you had some kind of episode with your brain, but we have any number of proven cases of hallucinatory episodes, the facility of the human brain for such things is a matter of record. The suspension of the universal laws of the space-time continuum - only noticed by a particular individual - on the other hand has never even once been verified to have occurred. Our minds is where we live; to accept that it can deceive us in such a complete and compelling way is deeply disturbing to us, it places all of what we perceive, all of reality in doubt. So of course there is a strong compulsion to believe that one didn't simply have a minor (if spectacular) brief brain malfunction, and that we can rely on our senses 100%. But we're telling ourselves fairy tales if we believe that. One only has to do a brief search here on YouTube to see how easily the senses can be fooled. And perhaps I should add that I myself came across the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse one time way back in the day. It was indistinguishable from reality. Fortunately however, I was already by that time a seasoned sceptic and rationalist and so I knew that regardless of what my heretofore reliable senses were telling me, reason made it admit of no other conclusion than that I was hallucinating. As you were.
Winslow Wilson (1 month ago)
NoneOfYourBeeswax I haven't read Supernature. I looked it up to see what you were talking about but I listen very little to other people's theories about what's going on in the Universe and what's here or what isn't. I had an experience many, many years ago and know it took place and was not a hallucination, since I've never had a hallucination. I wasn't on alcohol or drugs or anything and was quite clear when it all happened outdoors one evening. To tell you what happened would make you doubt my mental stability, since the incident defied all scientific explanation of laws of reality and laws of gravity while taking place over several minutes. I attempted to tell a fairly close friend at the time and he was worried about me from them on. I tried again several years later with another friend and got similar reactions. But it makes no difference really. In so far as the Universe goes, I experienced something that very few will ever come across and I don't have to show anyone the evidence. The evidence was shown to me and me only. That's all that counts.
NoneOfYour Beeswax (1 month ago)
Someone read Supernature I suspect... For me it was a seminal book and changed my thinking, despite actually being very sceptical of many of the claims. But to me the overriding message was that the supernatural was now defunct, all observable phenomena have natural causes, and that as Billy the Bard said; "There are more things in heaven and Earth... than are dreamt of in your philosophy". I threw my Von Daniken books away and have been a rationalist ever since. Show me the evidence! my battle cry!

NoneOfYour Beeswax (1 month ago)
Responding and reacting to stimuli does not imply "feeling". A neural system capable of the degrees and distinction of pain as felt by human being is a very advanced and sophisticated highly _evolved_ system which plants lack because evolution does not endow such sophisticated sensation in organisms which have no need for it. As Drago points out, plants cannot flee from danger (although some can curl up their leaves defensively). All a plant needs is to recognise it is under attack in order to send the chemical response to trigger anti-bug toxins. Simple signals are all that are required, so feeling pain would be unnecessary and very cruel of Mother Nature.

Ayyyyy. Interesting how some people who don't eat meat reason that they don't like killing living things. They should watch this video. It's a good reminder that plants are also very much alive.

Fresh again! As they continue to grow too sometimes, and replenishes with moisture and water. Cucumbers the same, and much more,.. Put a piece of meat or a steak in or on the ground, water or anywhere? See what happens,..

I guess vegans have to learn how to photosynthesize to avoid causing plants pain now
C J (1 month ago)
Herbert Pocket // Being you do this in spite and all (you should look at why you feel the need to do this), you actually have a point - not the one about “photosynthesizing” though,.. Plants feel and strive themselves - why would a tree otherwise have delicious apples? Or a bush be covered with hurtful thorns? A cactus be covered with all its spikes? Why are they all growing and reproducing? Just like we do? Of course(!) they are all alive and have intelligence within them, striving for something. Eating air no, but fruitarianism might be the least invasive and the least hurtful option to go with. For those who are Christians here (I’m not though), Noah was told to eat only fruits, nuts and seeds after arriving from the flood, eating animals only to the point where they could be self sufficient with these foods,.. Food for thought,..

Carel van Heugten (1 month ago)
No doubt this is an application of CRISPR/CAS9, a nature (ecoli) based gen modification technology. Identified by Doudna and Charpentier in 2012. For this they sequence glowing organisms, find the alleles that codes for these glowing proteins. And then they take those genes and place them in another organism. This is a transgenic mutation and thats forbidden in for instance Europe. This technology will change the world and it is ignorance to forbid it. And we will need this technology, think of resistance for peniciline, deseases like malaria, dengue, cancer. CRISPR/CAS9 is absolutelu vital in those areas. Wake up Europe, wake up!

Is that why the continually trim the weed leaves? To stimulate the growth of the bud?
Sidd Somarriba (1 month ago)
Pruning leaves is important to maintain adequate airflow throughout the canopy and to maximize the nutrients made available to the flowers. Too dense of a canopy will result in poor airflow, which can encourage the growth of fungi and make it more difficult to address pests. Happy planting! 🌱
