One Man’s Fight to Save Traditional Muay Thai Boxing | Short Film Showcase

4809 ratings | 161221 views
Wisarut Wat Suksiriwararak is an old Muay Thai fighter from Pai in Northern Thailand. He now runs his own gym in Pai, passing down his knowledge of Thailand’s traditional martial art to both locals and visitors from around the world. Over the past few decades, the authentic practices of Muay Thai have slowly begun to fade away. This historic martial art now centers around financial incentives and entertainment as Thailand’s culture becomes increasingly commercialized. Filmmaker Marko Randelovic shows Suksiriwararak's fight to preserve the traditional aspects of the sport in his short film Fighter: The Legend of a Muay Thai Boxer. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe ➡ Get More Short Film Showcase: http://bit.ly/ShortFilmShowcase #NationalGeographic #MuayThai #ShortFilmShowcase About Short Film Showcase: The Short Film Showcase spotlights exceptional short videos created by filmmakers from around the web and selected by National Geographic editors. Muay Thai is slowly fading as Thailand's culture becomes more commercialized. What intrigues you the most about this traditional martial art?
John Drake (4 months ago)
@Mike Davis Go to any MMA gym and you will see both a ring and a cage. Israel Adesanya was a top ranked kickboxer before he went MMA. And most MMA fighters will isolate their training, sometimes just doing boxing, sometimes just doing kickboxing and sometimes just doing submission grappling.
EVO6 (4 months ago)
@Mike Davis in his eyes maybe but MMA is the only way muay Thai will grow. And functionally it's almost identical

Culture and tradition gradually change They evolve so why stop its evolution?. For all we know, the so called traditional muaythai may not be the same as practiced before it is termed “traditional”.

Combat sports are on the rise, studies have shown martial arts is the fastest growing sport in north america, there are huge promotions now that you can fight for to make big money.. Its far from the amount you would get for boxing, but its growing.. Fast
daniel280456 (3 months ago)
People can practice the same martial art for different reasons. They choose those reasons. If they want the spiritual part, they'll find it. Maybe the new generation just choose not to look for it. Maybe they only see Muay Thai as a way to escape poverty.

ive been training muay thai since i was nine.. for ten years never had a fight in the ring mostly spars with other students or requested as sparring partners for fighters to prep them for fights, about a year ago i had my real fight not in the ring but out in the streets, i saw three guys fighting this one guy he was keeping them off for the most part and i knew i had to do something i knew with all my experience and training that guy didnt have a chance against us four.

I love & respect the martial art of Muay Thai. But it is a dangerous, deadly combat sport. Any hit can be the last anyone can take. So the fighter should make as much as money as fast as he can. No disrespect, but I'm all in for the commersalization of the Sport

Personally I don't see a problem with people fighting for entertainment, I mean there doing what they love and making a living out of it.
Andrew Choi (4 months ago)
I personally don't think there is much wrong in it either, but I think all he's trying to do is remind people that Muay Thai is ALSO about more than just winning prize money and hitting people.

Training with sandbags, boxing gloves, modern polyester shorts, tank top, ring, very traditional muay thai indeed
Andrew Choi (4 months ago)
"Traditional" doesn't mean no technology. He's referring to the spiritual aspects of the martial ART and its philosophical tenets. Muay Thai has a lot of international exposure but nowadays many people just view it as a mere sport or simple tool for winning prize money. He just wants to remind people what Muay Thai was originally about so we don't just look at it as just another way of hitting people.

Well made short doc! Thank you National Geographic 🙏🙏🙏 ....as part of the new generation of Muay Thai I can say that I have learned and nurtured the art of Muay Thai thanks to my coach. The first day I decided to embark on this journey my coach asked me to bring a notebook. The first lesson was the history of Muay Thai before I even learn how to punch, kick, knee, elbow or even learn my stance. I believe this is the way it should be done ...educate and nurture the student with all aspects of the art so that they can carry on and teach it to the next generation.

This is the way that martial arts need to be presented to the public. Thank you. The next step is to talk about the other styles related to Muay Thai, as well: the sister style taught to the military, the forerunner style of Muay Boran, and the ancient martial art of Krabi-Krabong, which came before that. They all deserve to be preserved.

This kind of thing happens every time that laissez-faire global capitalism is introduced. A big store like Walmart or some other big chain conglomerate comes in and takes a wrecking ball to all of the local small businesses. No one is able to compete and the average worker becomes poorer as they are displaced with cheap labor. Big ugly buildings ruin the landscape and the town, culture, and community are destroyed and atomized in the endless pursuit of profit. The gap between the rich and the poor widens creating resentment from the proletariat and the public begins to demand a communist revolution. This is all according to Marx's plan of course.

Beautiful cinematography, but I'm still not clear how this guy's muay Thai differs from modern muay Thai. What exactly are the differences between his "old" style and what Buakaw and Dani Bill do?
ludlow 889 (4 months ago)
@minecraftliberal2009 Again, what exactly are these traditions? And how are they being lost? How does what Buakaw and Dani Bill do in the ring violate tradition? The mini-documentary is very short on information. Looks great, but doesn't tell us much.
minecraftliberal2009 (4 months ago)
i think it's more about the tradition or the culture? What I got from this video is that Muay Thai is transitioning into a business and he wants to keep it traditional, but I'm not sure how that would alter the fighting techniques.

There are good traditions that should be kept and bad ones that should be thrown into a garbage bin. Muay thai is really good sport and self defence art.

as the martial arts get more popular and offers high amount of money, all of them are loosing their spiritual and cultural traditions to focus only in sportive winning belts and money ... but martial art was never intend to thse modern things .. it was made to protect ones country, to control one´s sense, anger, mind, to give equilibrium, to keep good health, to be always respectfull, to learn the laws of a king etc...nowadays to get to know what martial art is, very hard, only few can teach.

ronki23 (4 months ago)
@Trevor Arlee yeah but you can't control the upper body when you throw; you can only reap the leg or catch and sweep so you can't do any hip or shoulder throws. Benny Urquidez used to do hip and shoulder throws in Japan

When I see comments saying Muay Thai warriors should go to UFC, I want to cry! I adore the Art of Muay Thai! What Muay Thai has is unique! Muay Thai is 20 yo guys with 200+ fights, eating, breathing and sleeping Muay Thai! It's a religion, a tradition, a history, a way of life all in one! And it really hurts me to see awesome Muay Thai fimeu dying to gambling. Next time before comparing it with MMA please consider there are those who understand, feel and appreciate the art as it is. And to us, that comment is as dumb as telling a virtuous pianist to go do some painting. Just don't do it!
