Norfolk Southern Unveils New Locomotive in Celebration of GoRail's Tenth Anniversary

2532 ratings | 292217 views
March 12, 2014 -- GoRail and Norfolk Southern announced the unveiling of its one-of-a-kind GoRail locomotive today to commemorate the 10th anniversary of GoRail, a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to educating the public about the benefits of moving more freight by rail. Founded in 2004, GoRail mobilizes support for policies that would lead to more freight moving by rail and opposition to policies that would limit the freight railroads' ability to meet growing freight demand. The GoRail locomotive will enter into regular freight service on Norfolk Southern's system. "We are honored that Norfolk Southern has commissioned this special GoRail locomotive and excited for its debut," said GoRail President Russell McGurk. "We believe it will help GoRail spread awareness about the many public benefits of rail, including more jobs, improved safety, less pollution and less energy consumption. When the public understands that America's privately owned freight railroads invest billions of dollars each year in the nation's rail network, so taxpayers don't have to, they are eager to get behind pro-rail policies." The SD60E model features a paint scheme combining the infinity lines of the Norfolk Southern livery with the tracks of the GoRail logo. The lines end in an arrow to depict movement, and the GoRail colors carry through the modified speed lines to show the unity of GoRail and Norfolk Southern, creating the look of land as seen from above and signifying freight movement. The GoRail locomotive joins Norfolk Southern's 30th anniversary fleet of 20 non-traditional locomotives painted in the schemes of key predecessor railroad companies and the veterans' locomotive painted to honor those who have served in the military and reserves. The GoRail locomotive was painted in Altoona, involving 14 Norfolk Southern employees using 60 gallons of primer and paint over a 40-hour period. "Our industry has a great story to tell, and GoRail does an excellent job of educating the public about the benefits and strengths of the American freight rail system and the continuing high levels of freight rail investment to drive safety, service and growth," said Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman. "We are pleased to help promote GoRail and their pro-rail mission."

been watching some of your videos. wow painting a loco is very labour intensive. well for 3 to 5 guys anyway. it is very nice to see Norfolk do heritage units for Conrail, first responders.i have never seen the Go Rail one before now. What was it painted up for? and did Athearn do a model of it ?

Looks good a LOT better than your usual boring trash livery. That said I'd have dumped the white and kept the colourful blue/green striping all the way around where you have the coloured and the white striping. The white on black is boring where that splash of colour makes a HUGE difference on that black and adds a lot of eye candy. The gorail graphic is good as is the lime green detailing in the metal.

- CONTINUED - This has been done BUT, there are many steam units not in service, with more coming on line. These engines are proving to be as able to pull huge loads as they were when originally built. How about putting all 8 of the Big Boys and the other heavy haul articulated engines back in service to pull heavy freight over mountains freeing up as many as 4 diesel units for long haul. Also the steam units, when converted to oil, need worry only about water - double tenders can provide for longer runs. where water could be a problem. Americans have forgotten that it costs less to rebuild - especially with new materials, than to replace. Look at the Union Pacific steam program for proof of this. Not to forget other serious restoration programs across the country. The age of steam has not passed. Steam will never lose the power to do work. With research into efficiency, steam units can again return to revenue freight.

While most sane people advocate a return to Rail freight (Railroad Express Agnecy) we must remember that when Rail made the US great it did so because the government had not developed an interstate highway system, trucks were used only for local deliveries from freight depots and the government did not tax the living daylights out of the railroads while giving tax breaks to trucking companies - often started up by returning veterans. The railroads were also taxed on track mileage thus giving incentive to remove as much of the parallel trackage that had been built. We must also remember that this taxation occurred when the engines and rolling stock were worn to the bone by 4 years of intense service during WW-II. Also, while being taxed to the hilt the operating companies, that had made huge investment in new locomotives and rolling stock in the early 1940's began to scrap this investment in favor of diesel. Their big error was not running the steam units until they came up for major tear-downs for boiler service thus minimizing the capitalization for now engines and maintenance facilities and all the cost of retraining the service and operating crews to run them.

How did a bogey with two axles in the workshop change to a bogey with 3 axles out of the workshop??
silicon212 (2 years ago)
Here in the US, we refer to those as 'trucks'. The locomotive, while in the paint booth, was on shop trucks (basically standard railcar trucks), for whatever reason (maybe the locomotive trucks were being rebuilt). They are unpowered and allow the locomotive to be moved from area to area. The 3-axle trucks are the standard locomotive trucks on these EMD SD60 series locomotives.

That was Awesome 😎
