The pineberry is not an ancient variety of strawberry. It is relatively new hybrid crossed from a Chilean strawberry and an American strawberry that was created in Belgium.

The mahonia (Oregon grape) is growing as weed or ornamental plant everywhere around Europe. The fruit is not very tasty and the presence of toxines discourages from culinary use. We usually leave them for birds.
Renato (1 month ago)
Porcelain berry is not edible. It‘s toxic.

Wait...he said "prevents birth defects". WHY say something so nonsensical? Birth defects are the result of a glitch or inherited malformation of DNA. Eating a fruit will not prevent that. Wow.

The "Oregon grape" is commonly used as an ornamental plant for parks and graveyards. I know it as Mahonia. Didn't manage to harvest some of the fruit since I was preoccupied making Amelanchier and Taxus baccata jam. Both tedious and especially the taxus is extremely time consuming since you have to be very very careful to catch every of the deadly poisonous seeds. I will try Mahonia next year.

Yesss, I'm glad you sung the praises of mangosteen!!! I tried it in Philippines and knew right away, there will never be another fruit as delicious as this one. That's why I couldn't believe it was not showing up back home in Vancouver BC in the Asian market.!! Thanks for explaining why. Yes, I do remember a swarm of ants escaping from the fruit I opened while in Asia. I can't wait for it to become more available in North America as American growers get on board with mangosteen!!

Apple should be the name of one fruit genus, not a default name for every new fruit we discover. The repetition gets old real quick.

Star apple (as it is called here) is grown here, there is one behind my yard. But I think we call it that for a different reason as it is famous for rarely falling off the tree, hence star apple as its always in the sky. We also call it the mean tree (as in unkind)
