A musical that examines black identity in the 1901 World's Fair | Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin

Visit http://TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, transcripts, translations, personalized Talk recommendations and more. In this lively talk and performance, artist and TED Fellow Amma Y. Ghartey-Tagoe Kootin offers a sneak peek of her forthcoming musical "At Buffalo." Drawing on archival material from the 1901 Pan-American Exhibition, a world's fair held in Buffalo, New York, the show examines conflicting representations of black identity exhibited at the fair -- highlighting unsettlingly familiar parallels between American society at the turn of the century and today, and asking: Are we all still part of the show? The people who are against this amazing idea are just racist bigots. People are getting mad that this information is leftist. However, TED talks are very versatile and objective. These talks are sometimes opinion based, however, TED talks are meant to share knowledge. I like this idea because my history is getting deleted by people who do lot want me to hear about my history. There’s an old saying if you don’t know your history you are doomed to repeat it. I want to learn about my history because throughout elementary to high school my history classes were white-washed and when I got to college and took a Black Studies class I’ve gotten more educated on my culture and who I was in society. I’m just upset that the comments are filled with hatred. When the comments should be uplifting people that we are trying to uncover a dark history to educate people be a there is a lot of people like me who do not know their history and it is sad. I want to learn my history because it matters.

Why is it that black is still being used, as in "black identity"? Same goes for white and once the usage by some with yellow. Based on the ancient ideas/views of whom exactly? Theodorius Ghandeli questions and wonders.

We don’t care about learning history anymore? I thought this was really interesting and taught me a little bit about something I hadn’t heard about before. And I love how they presented their speech in a way that tied in with their theater passion.

I'll tell you one thing...there will never be another world fair...not on this side of the dark age, anyways. And, on the other side, they'll be too busy doing awesome things that are too big for us mere mortals to dream of.
A W (1 month ago)
They never stopped having world fairs? Next one is in Dubai next year! Only difference between now and 20th century is that America hasn't won the competition for holding one in forever.

Instead of feeling attacked or threaten by the history of "black identity", why not try to understand what's being shared? This is actually a challenge African-Americans still face today, within ourselves and within society.
SirNate (1 month ago)
I don't know why people are so triggered by this. I think the story of the World's Fair sounds so interesting and would make a great musical. It's important to understand our history (I don't think people were this upset about Hamilton) so that we can learn from our mistakes and so that we can understand today's events in a broader social/cultural context. And if you don't care about learning from our mistakes or cultivating a better understanding, then why are you even watching TED?

I think this in this TED performance they missed the slogan "ideas worth spreading" because there wasn't even any idea presented here. The question in the end "Are we all just part of the show?" also doesn't seem scientific, because how can such a claim ever be disproven? (Which is a criteria for being scientific).

This is the most uncharitable take of the video ever. The argument is much more: "Here's a thing that will help us better understand the world of 1901. This will help us see the implications that time has for the present day and better understand the world now." I mean, you can't actually think that racial history has no implications for today, right?

Racism is still present. E.g. zwarte piet in the Netherlands. Look it up, black pete, zwarte piet, blackface. Then there is the subconscious racsim almost all of us have, it's disturbing.. Blacks distrusting and hating each other without even knowing it. In the end it's all just a scheme by the real elite. Divide and conquer, divide and rule. Like they separated blacks within the black community, so they do it to the whole of humanity. Put blacks against whites, fat against skinny, blue collar against white collar, etc. etc. We need to realize that we are one! It's all just one big illusion. One of the best ways I find is to raise your consciousness so that you feel that we are one. The two ways I've found to work the best are a raw vegan diet and spiritual practice, mainly yoga, meditation. I suggest everyone to do a juicefeast so you will experience the benefits of a raw vegan diet very fast. Including an expansion of love just as a result of that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD966PN531s&list=PLIWo2dGh9fzlyWqjurCLq-BUAqXAjZXe3&index=1 Only Love!!! <3 :D

The recollection of history is never for nothing. Allowing a version of history to domination our thoughts about how we came to the present isn't always right. There is of course more than one side to any account ever told by a human. When I hear students at the school where I work say, "This that or the other thing is so because my ancestors were slaves." I'll always ask, "Which ones of your ancestors were slaves?" To this day I've of yet not had a student answer with a specific relative in a particular situation. Not surprising is this situation, because most of these students were born 150 years after slavery was abolished. That would make any potential slave relative a great, great, great grandparent. Most people can not readily identify a specific thing in their life that is directly a result of how and what their great, great, great grandparent experienced in life. I know how my life has been influenced by being the second generation born of Jewish German immigrants to the US. I can see somewhere between zero and nil influence of the great, great grandparents on my grandchildren. I would not however suggest they forget how the Holocaust cause by certain German people ravaged generations. For them however it is more of a general history than something that cause direct manifestations in their own life. BTW 1/4 of grandparents were black American.

I love musicals and history, and this looks really interesting. My only response to what's in the comment section is that there are solid points on both sides thus far. Yes of course it's important to aknowledge our past mistakes like this, but it could've also just been for show (considering it was the world's fair and part of it is meant for entertainment). As well, I agree with the comments about how if you were to make say a musical about the racism shown towards irish immigrants throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, or the life of a white immigrant coming through Ellis Island, or say a white kid trying to play basketball and other kids being jerks to him because of his race, people would be mad. So, while this is an amazing idea for a musical and I support it, I can see how some people are mad. Just my thoughts
Tyler Robertson (1 month ago)
@txcwt that is a conpletely fair statement and I have no argument for that. In my experience with Ted, most of these more moral or "woke" questions and talks have been on Tedx, so your statement makes complete sense
txcwt (1 month ago)
It's not like people are "mad" like they were treated unfairly. People are annoyed on how unnecessary this video is on TED, where you expect to learn about "technology, education, design" and not about how "woke" the TED staff is. Is there no single place on earth, where identity politics can be left out?
Stephen Catton (1 month ago)
Just goes to show that it is only the SJW and identity political types who think that the colour of your skin informs you of your life's experience and show that they are so wrong in that there is no blackness or whiteness and only lots of different people with differing cultures. One set of cultures still trading in slaves in one continent and another set of cultures who have outlawed slavery..... I know the one i would rather live in.
txcwt (1 month ago)
Only having read the title: There is nothing like "black identity". I wish the time comes soon, when we look back on identity politics and ask ourselves "what were we even thinking?" like with wearing bell-bottoms ... or actual racism.

@txcwt , embrace the reality. There is no "fixing" things at this point. You will never convince the coastal elites who long for Socialism (as they choose to define it) that the rest of the nation will accept their views. Our best hope, balkanization into a much looser confederation or, sadly, Civil War 2.0 in some sense. Had it not been for President Trump, we would already be burning.

@Bob Frog Trump is not the solution to the broken american system, he is another symptom. If enough people realize this the majority (*cough*) won't vote for him again.

Edwin Brown (1 month ago)
The first commentor and many others in this comment section have directly said she was selected to speak just because of her ethnicity and you are well aware. With no factual evidence it’s being suggested that this speaker having a platform is simply pandering which is outrageous. If anything is divisive it’s accusing someone of being promoted simply because they are of a minority group. Also in response to another commentor anyone from the US should be aware that unfortunately people here are often treated differently and face these accusations based on their physical appearance, regardless of their specific and unique ethnicity. I’m well aware that there is no biological basis for race but Americans still demononstrably treat those who they assume are of a historical group differently based on their appearance, it is still a very real concept to those that continue to mistreat people. Even in this short clip she references modern day movements that are responding to this.
Kivaras (1 month ago)
@Edwin Brown The only person here assuming the message of the content has anything to do with physical appearance is you.
txcwt (1 month ago)
@Edwin Brown ah and a small side note: "race"(skin color) /= identity. second side note: there are no biological races in humans. I always wonder why Americans use this term. It seems to cause a lot of problems because it's so divisive.
txcwt (1 month ago)
@Edwin Brown you say "looks like someone is mad that there is diverse excellency" as if the only reason one could dislike a TED "talk" of a black person is because one is jealous or racist. You are inventing/continuing the problem.
Elektric Skeptic (1 month ago)
@thatguy 00 That's barely it. It's mostly because of intentional segregation of POC into infrastructure & locales which were then subsequently neglected. Including no funding for public pools, parks, let alone up keeping anything which was geographically near. Just because youve not personally experienced targeting and bias doesn't mean millions of people are lying. It just means you've never had it happen to you. This is cos you're white. Its logical. Please don't allow lies which perpetrate hatred any residency in your mind. Peace.
