In the steam train days locomotive crews might toss a few pounds of coal beside the track in poor areas, especially in hard winters. It was against company rules, but it helped poor people heat their homes.

It's interesting to see that pedestrians were almost as casual about walking and cycling in front of moving trains as they are today. I was worried until that idiot stopped his bicycle.

Being a train lover,this was simply awesome.When I saw the criss crossing of tracks, and railroad bridges over other tracks, I thought this was like the interstate highways of the early 20th century.

I love historical footage like this. Thank you so much for sharing. Curious about the water trough between the rails. As much as I have been a fan of steam locomotives throughout the decades, I had never seen that before. Seems like a great idea, though.

I think they were used primarily by New York Central and the Pennsy. Every second counted on their name trains.

What an amazing selection of historic footage; a window into a bygone world. Probably none of the railway rolling stock (carriages or locomotives) will have survived and all of those people in every shot have been dead for many decades. The quality of the films do not prevent your mind from being transported back there.

The sequence from 01:00 looks highly dangerous, a track gang works on the line as a train approaches, warned off only at the last moment by the Foreman's handkerchief?, and the train passes by without even reducing speed!

If trains reduced speed for every person near the track they'd never get to where they're heading. Its your job to get the hell out of the way. I worked on the RR in the 70's...we got out of the way kind of at the last minute just like these guys did. It wasnt that close actually..the film is speeded up. But I will tell you that being inside a tunnel with a passing train is intense...cause tons of steel are rolling just 2 or 3 feet in front of your nose and the ground shakes under your feet. Trust me I don't care how tough you think you are the first few times you have to do it its scary. We worked inside the Moffat Tunnel in Colorado and its 7 miles long. It was built in 1923 when trains were narrow guage and much smaller. But by the 70's trains were much taller and wider and standard guage. Those newer trains filled those old tunnels to the max so when you worked in the tunnel and a train came thru you had find a small man sized cut out chisled out in the rock scattered every so often that was about the thickness of your body as a 100 car freight train rumbled by 2 feet in front of your nose in total pitch darkness. Its quite the experience. No joke.

@ 2:00 the narrator says, "...is shot from the engineer's view". Wrong. The left side of the cab (in the U.S.A.) is the fireman's side. Not the engineer's side.

This was a great look at early American railroading. Loved all the watchmen at the road crossings with white flags and wooden passenger cars with truss rods. All of this footage is so much better than a static photograph. Thank you Mr. Edison.

At about 3:22 minutes the "horseshoe curve" is shown. Excerpt from Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe_Curve_(Pennsylvania) Horseshoe Curve is a three-track railroad curve on Norfolk Southern Railway's Pittsburgh Line in Blair County, Pennsylvania. The curve itself is about 2,375 feet (700 m) long and 1,300 feet (400 m) in diameter; it was completed in 1854 by the Pennsylvania Railroad as a way to lessen the grade to the summit of the Allegheny Mountains. It eventually replaced the time-consuming Allegheny Portage Railroad, the only other route across the mountains for large vehicles

Looking back it seems there was a quality of life that I wish were still available, but of course there are lots of developments that I dearly like and wouldn't want to miss. I know, right. I read somewhere that the avg life expectancy for a guy born in 1900 was only 49 years. Higher quality of life, but comparatively short. Makes me wonder which I'd rather have.

0:32 to 0:56 Elizabeth, NJ . Most of the Jersey Central tracks in this section long since gone although some small sections still exist. The NJT station now sits over the the JC roadbed.

Thats exactly the point - a lap disolve in motion picture taking back then is a fade-out of a scene that overlaps with a fade-in of a new scene, so that one appears to dissolve into the other. It made the tunnel shot appear seamless.

The National Park Service runs the Thomas Edison Center at Menlo Park, New Jersey.  Definitely worth the visit.  You can also see the Edison railroad....

Don't know what they are called, but some of the films show "fringes" of steel rods hanging about 40 feet in front of bridges so that men riding atop the cars will know to duck and not get hit by the bridge.

I live 20 mins from the shot at 4:03 in Sarnia Ontario also I've been near that tunnel many times and it is quite different, Unfortunately the tracks have been torn up.

Interesting that this was taken from "Paper Positives". When they made films back then, as well as the Celluloid Negative and the Positive made from that they were also required to make a paper photograph of every frame which is what we have here. The original Celluloid films of this vid have probably long since disintegrated.

Living in the northeast, I really enjoyed this. Been in some of these places and I live in the Lehigh Valley. First time I have seen a rail trough *after* the train passes - cleaned that out nicely. Awesome that this footage exists.

The first time they tried to fill the tender at that speed it blew up!!!! too much water and not enough air  going out..... boooooom!!!!!! after that they put in special baffles to get rid of the air.... no more burst tenders.

@O.K. Frax Thanks for your comment. I again agree with you on all you stated. I guess my point was that if we understand who God is, that He is The Holy and sovereign creator of all things. When we come before Him in worship and praise we should show reverence first from our heart and that will then overflow to the outside. Hence dressing up as opposed to wearing something that we cut the grass in. I just think some people have swung to far the other way and now show very little reverence when they come into God's presence corporately. In Exodus 19, God told Moses to consecrate the people up to the third day, and stay away from their wives to prepare themselves to meet God near the mountain and also to wash their clothes. Sorry to go on and on but this topic has been bugging me lately. I know the clothes don't matter it's all about the heart. But if God invited me to church this Sunday and He said He would be there, I know I'm not going to show up looking like right after church I'm going to go play tennis. I just think some people show up at church punch their card and get on with the rest of their other important things they want to do. Like worshiping God was a speed bump in their day. I will even throw myself in that group at times, but it's not where I want to be. Thank God for Jesus my great high priest. I now can boldly approach the throne of grace.

Humble Wisdom that’s for your comment, the Old Testament priest represent a different things and what he wore, the rituals he performed, if you read first Samuel the first three chapters you can see those at wore that clothing but acted contrary were detestable to the Lord, he sent a prophet to them the warn them of their unrighteous deeds, judgment followed their unrepentant heart. Jesus is called a High Priest and he’s the only one worthy to open up the Books see the book of revelations

The PRR ("Pennsy") and NYC railroads had them and they were also used in Britain. They called them Water Troughs on this vid but I've also heard them referred to as Track Pans.

Old films were shot at 16 frames per second, modern film shot at 24 frames per second. Old films are played at 24 frames per second, hence they seem to move faster.

@stripervince1 on the very last clip, it replenishes its water supply from the trough in the middle of the track without stopping? fucking ingenius. wish i was born in 1900 like my gandfather, he liveD til 101. there were no airlplanes when he was a kid. he didnt see one til 1915. he got to see apollo 11 land on the moon in 69. from no flight to the moon in 66 years

It's a damn shame what happened to the American railroads. You can blame the greedy bastards for whom a couple million bucks wasn't good enough. Now all we have left from the glory days or railroading are old footage like this, old photographs, and the painstaking labor of love that has gone into model railroads across the country. Nothing is as it once was. They call it "progress", I call it fubar.

The railroads needed to become more competitive with the trucking industry there would be no freight railroads today if it was business as usual.. The decaying railroads of the 60s will prove that point.

CrazyBear65 sir, it wasn't Railroad Magnates that brought the roads down to their present state, but rather the advent of th US Highway System. Meant to provide for movement of troops during time of war, it allowed the trucking industry to grow from very local service to transcontinental service that could go anywhere. Less-Than-Carload service was ideal for trucks, and the rest is history. Mean Gene

David Wayne: Trucks didn't become a threat to railroads until the height of the Cold War and the completion of the interstate highway system. Air freight has always been an extravegence because of the very high cost and weight limitations of the aircraft. When the Jumbos came along weight restrictions came down but rates did not. What hurt railroads more than anything was government regulation and the destruction of railroad infrastructure from the world wars, something the government should have paid for but did not. After deregulation railroads sunk massive amounts of money into modernization in order to survive. The rationalization of the railroads that had been predicted at the start of deregulation did indeed occur and continues. The big railroads that are left are extremely well built and maintained because they have to be in the ongoing atmosphere of deregulation. It's also why there is the movement towards the one-man crew or even driverless trains. It's either highest efficiency (and lowest rates) or die.
