FS2004 - Unlocking Disaster (United Airlines Flight 811)

Please support this channel by following me on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/allecibay United Airlines Flight 811 was a regularly scheduled airline flight from Los Angeles to Sydney, with intermediate stops at Honolulu, and Auckland. On February 24, 1989, the Boeing 747-122 serving the flight experienced a cargo door failure in flight shortly after leaving Honolulu. The resulting explosive decompression blew out several rows of seats, resulting in the deaths of nine passengers. The aircraft returned to Honolulu, where it landed safely. Can you do continental Airlines flight 1713 ?
Callum Tanner (6 days ago)
A short circuit? So you’re saying this could easily happen on modern day 747’s?
Jennifer Kelly (6 days ago)
I can't stop thinking about those poor people who were killed, what a way to go and all those passengers that saw them being sucked out must still be living with those images in their head. I am never ever getting on a plane after watching this.

Odd that 2 cargo doors could be recovered in the Pacific ocean but the black boxes at ground zero on 9~11 could (despite intensive searching) never be located....I hate conspiracies but WTF is going on ???

Is it possible that there was a bomb on board?
Pedro Chemim (10 days ago)
Yes I know, but as the airplane landed safely they were able to investigate the 747 with detail and no traces of explosives were found on board.
Ernest Kovach (10 days ago)
Pedro Chemim THAT IS the official version.

No.. it was just a bad door design

9 people is died. (or many people is sucked into engine)
GroomLeader (25 days ago)
That could have been an even worse tragedy. The nine who died, horrible way to be killed. Having such a top crew with that combined hours of flying time really saved so many lives.

One of the Guys that passed away in this accident was a fellow Kiwi Lee Campbell. His parents were relentless in their personal investigation and the final conclusion. Massive respect

Allec, all power to the cabin was lost when the cargo door opened. How come the lights are still on?

I like this channel way better than air crash. Bc Alec just tells the story, interestingly! Air crash takes 1h of ur life, constantly repeating parts, as if I am an imbecile, and boring you to death half the time. lol, just sayin!

Allec please, trust my suggestion. using p3d with add-ons like envtex, p3d tweak assistant, chaseplane, orbx world packs, topcat, pfpx, and realism shader pack would make a big difference. And nice PC specs would help you do everything freely on high settings. P3d gonna be more realistic especially p3d v4.

Horrible way for those 9 to die, but swift decisions by the captain and flight crew saved well over 300 others. So if 377 passengers and 18 crew took off totaling 395 souls and 9 are killed wouldn't that leave 386 that survived instead of the 346 mentioned? Maybe this was already addressed. Great video though, concise, good editing, no sensationalism, just facts, well done.

I got to hear Captain Cronin speak shortly after the accident. When the explosion occurred, he was hand flying the airplane, and he had to apply full left rudder to keep the plane under control. He speculated that if the autopilot had been on, the aircraft would have been unrecoverable. He told us that he always hand flew to cruising altitude, and said that was uncommon. He also said the crew never had time to go through the checklists, and that his habit of practicing for different emergencies, while sitting in the cockpit before boarding, was extremely helpful.

keep the videos coming allec big fan of your work.

If I remember correctly it was the parents of one of the deceased passengers who pushed the NTSB to revise their conclusions. The father was an engineer and helped prove that it was a defective design that caused the hatch to open.

Before you play the video, the photo should show that the cargo door is gone, but it shows that the cargo door didn’t come off and the portion of the fuselage hasn’t ripped off.

Since this was not an act of God, why were those people responsible for this avoidable tragedy not sent to prison? Are they legally protected from their negligent actions. What if I repaired my own car and the faulty repairs resulted in a deadly accident. What would be my punishment?

Saw a documentary on this about 8 years ago. Parent's of one of the guy sucked out from NZ spent all their money trying to find their son but couldn't. Also they used their own money for a private investigation. Was very sad to watch.

You could recreate this one. Very short tragic flight. The veteran pilot let the younger pilot take care of putting fuel in the plane, but he forgot to balance the fuel between the wings. The fuel was 100% in one side, causing the plane to tilt to one side after taking off. The plane hit a house when crashed, killing 6 people. Of course both pilots died on impact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1spv3qmK7-8

A little surprised that United would bother to repair an 18-year 747-100 with that kind of damage, and not just write the plane off.

The cost of repair was less than the value of a new plane; why not repair it?

Off topic question, but as a pilot, can you fly any type of aircraft? I’ve always felt that flying a 747 would be different than a, say, 767. Are pilots trained on specific planes or can you fly whatever is available?
planes spotter and railfanner (1 month ago)
you can fly as many different planes as you want at a time, but depending on how different they are you need separate so called "type rating", basically certification you can fly that plane. but the 767 and 747 are completely different airplanes, so you would need 2 type- rating's.
Leighton Samms (1 month ago)
07foxmulder you need a checkout on each type, you fly , as they ALL are quite different, the exception is if you are checked out in a B 657, or are also allowed to fly B 767, same cockpit, no flight engineer, just a 2 man crew.

As a retired 747 captain I can assure you that that airplane was a handful to fly. Capt. Cronin and crew did everything right. We used to duplicate this incident in the simulator, very difficult profile to fly. Thanks Allec for your great videos.

Shit like this is why I don’t fly. I’m over 50 and I’ve only flown twice in my life. I know I have a greater chance of dying in a car accident but at least I’m in control of the vehicle and if I have a flat tire I don’t have far to fall.
Troodon (1 month ago)
Well that's incredibly ignorant of you, but whatever. I've been in 5 car accidents in my life and 0 plane crashes.

Shifty Morgan Continental, had all new aircraft, but once UNITED took over, they frigging RUINED IT, and they now have the oldest airplanes, with a few maybe hundred A320s junk., I have NOT flown them since 2013.

pre-ultimate flight? 2nd to last flight?
Rob Younan (1 month ago)
Leighton Samms ok i see so on the return flight hed be on it but not fly because he was turning 60 between legs?
Leighton Samms (1 month ago)
Rob Younan no that captain, COULD NOT FLY BACK AS PILOT, as he turned 60 years old, it eventually went to 65 like the BRITISH. The age 60 came from a study, predicated on PRIVATE PILOTS, never mind that being an ATP, mandates a complete medical EVERY 6 months. This flight , and the ‘door’ came out of an engineer, in No whom lost his son coming home on that flight, the NTSB, and BOEING , were shown the problem by this man, whom shipped his own Jaguar to the us to attend the court cases ( right hand drive ). May they all Rip.!
