On February 24, 1989, the Boeing 747-122 serving the flight experienced a cargo door failure in flight shortly after leaving Honolulu. The resulting explosive decompression blew out several rows of seats, resulting in the deaths of nine passengers. The aircraft returned to Honolulu, where it landed safely. Thanks for the videos,I believe the parents of a boy who died had a big part in determining the fault/bad design this aircraft type had.

Apparently one of the passengers was sucked into the engine. Yikes!

how many flight cycles aka pressurization cycles? not included right after # flights. At the time of the accident, N4713U had accumulated 58,815 total flight hours and 15,028 flight cycles.

I wonder if they ever found the remains of those Poor nine passengers. I know they were gone but for the families to have someone to bury. What an awful way to go. I hope the airliner at least gave compensation to the families. RIP!

Mama Lilly cat people are practically never found after leaving a plane at 30,000 ft over the ocean

People sometimes complain that airline pilots are overpaid - and these clips show that some ARE. But then along comes a Captain Cronin, who did everything right that night. And he earned every dollar he ever made, just to get to that moment...

Penultimate means next to last, not preultimate

The US more information given about the failure of the company and no information about the sucked passengers????☹☹☹ very weird.

The word is penultimate, not preultimate. It means next to last.

I'm just going to focus, for a minute, on the beautiful looking takeoff starting at 1:10. What a graceful animation.

Wonderful crew.. were the bodies of the victims found?
MWS ICT (3 months ago)
the REAL question is — how many of these flaws still haven’t been remedied??? How many 747s flying today have 20-30 year old wiring that can lead to fuel vapors igniting (as mentioned at the end of the documentary)?
FIDIRONU (3 months ago)
I know more about what happened to the plane than I do about what happened to the 9 poor sods sucked out into the abyss. Can you imagine how upsetting it must have been for them to watch the plane disappear into the night as they fell to their doom? My passport!
Jewlz (1 month ago)
FIDIRONU I read somewhere they were probably unconscious due to the lack of oxygen and cold, I hope it’s true because this would be truly terrifying !

Captain Dave may you rest in peace. You saved all the rest of those passengers on that plane that day. The plane was to blame. I wonder why airports cannot have a catch line up like they have on aircraft carriers to stop jets with literally no runway on which to stop. They must come in fast and hard and without those brake line stops they would just go over the other side of the ship. Couldn't the companies make something strong enough to at least slow down a plane that is landing without breaks, hydraulics, etc. Maybe by 2050 there will be such things.
Vikram Gupta (4 months ago)
Whoa! Electrical problem! I gasped when the flight engineer found several rows of seats missing. Those poor nine people!!!! Great performance to recover the aircraft.

Think about the people in the first row not to be sucked out. They witness the explosion and sit their at the precipice getting blasted with unimaginable wind speeds and pressure differentials.

The figures don't add up. If nine passengers were sucked out, that should leave 368 passengers plus 18 crew. That should leave 386 survivors, not 346. Just curious.

Life is fragile and unpredicatable. People sucked out of a plane because a door was not properly shut close. What a horrible nightmarish way to die. Sucked out of the sky at 25,000 feet to plummet to the Ocean. Never to been seen or found again.
Robert Brown (6 months ago)
I remember Dave when he was at United. He was an above average pilot and had exceeded knowledge of the 747. I flew with him a few times when I was a F/O and I was impressed with his professionalism in the cockpit and his wit and humor off the flight deck. I remember his death at the time and I was saddened to learn that he had passed. He was one of the good guys.

They found small debris of cargo doors at 14,000ft down in the pacific....in the 1980's ? Yet can't find a complete MH370 from Malaysia Airlines ...with 2017 technology and resources?
kilahchris (6 months ago)
The ocean is a huge. Back in 1989 Pilots and investigators had a more better idea when and where the plane lost it's cargo door. Flight MH370 could of disappeared in any part of the Indian Ocean.

What's the disaster?
Levine Levine (7 months ago)
Both US plane makers, Boeing and McDonald Douglas, has a history of bad design and construction of cargo doors. Several plane crashed and passengers died when the doors were ripped open and torn apart while in flight. The sudden depression compounded the catastrophe. I have yet to hear of cargo door mishaps on an Airbus, Embraer, or Bombardier.

Magica Spellman (7 months ago)
Sorry, this may be dumb ( not a specialist just a fan ) but the rest of the passengers were in their seats with a huge hole in the cabin and all survived? Is that possible? Shouldnt they have experienced a huge force? Problems with oxygen? Anything?

no they changed the design of the door, and retrofitted the old ones.
Jennifer Kelly (8 months ago)
I can't stop thinking about those poor people who were killed, what a way to go and all those passengers that saw them being sucked out must still be living with those images in their head. I am never ever getting on a plane after watching this.
gomphrena (7 months ago)
Jennifer Kelly • I’m not sure, but it’s very likely that it happened so fast, the hole tore open and they went out, all in one breath.

9 people is died. (or many people is sucked into engine)
GroomLeader (9 months ago)
That could have been an even worse tragedy. The nine who died, horrible way to be killed. Having such a top crew with that combined hours of flying time really saved so many lives.

One of the Guys that passed away in this accident was a fellow Kiwi Lee Campbell. His parents were relentless in their personal investigation and the final conclusion. Massive respect
Refilwe Pule (3 months ago)
+Bullhorn Twin Jesus, where did you read that? I have seen the documentary with Lee's parents. Very gentle and dignified couple. Lee's mother had a dream the night before that Lee had come to her, and she said she woke up with such a start. A mother's instinct. Very sad indeed😔
Bullhorn Twin (4 months ago)
Yeah. And it was determined that the kiwi was sucked into the engine rather than falling to his death. Rough.

X Pilot is respectable, and he puts out some good ones. But why do you want to come on the man, Allec Joshua Ibay, and run him down? Allec’s videos are painstakingly researched and done. He’s at the top of his game and I’ll defend him tooth and nail. (I’m probably embarrassing him like a mom would, but that’s ok too.)

Omar mohamed (9 months ago)
Allec please, trust my suggestion. using p3d with add-ons like envtex, p3d tweak assistant, chaseplane, orbx world packs, topcat, pfpx, and realism shader pack would make a big difference. And nice PC specs would help you do everything freely on high settings. P3d gonna be more realistic especially p3d v4.
UncleEarl97 (9 months ago)
Horrible way for those 9 to die, but swift decisions by the captain and flight crew saved well over 300 others. So if 377 passengers and 18 crew took off totaling 395 souls and 9 are killed wouldn't that leave 386 that survived instead of the 346 mentioned? Maybe this was already addressed. Great video though, concise, good editing, no sensationalism, just facts, well done.

I got to hear Captain Cronin speak shortly after the accident. When the explosion occurred, he was hand flying the airplane, and he had to apply full left rudder to keep the plane under control. He speculated that if the autopilot had been on, the aircraft would have been unrecoverable. He told us that he always hand flew to cruising altitude, and said that was uncommon. He also said the crew never had time to go through the checklists, and that his habit of practicing for different emergencies, while sitting in the cockpit before boarding, was extremely helpful.

If I remember correctly it was the parents of one of the deceased passengers who pushed the NTSB to revise their conclusions. The father was an engineer and helped prove that it was a defective design that caused the hatch to open.
