Buckwheat's version is far better than Brooks and Dunn. What a song....
Pat Downs (2 days ago)
Saying Brooks and Dunn is better than this is like saying Joan Baez did a better version of 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' than The Band. Just plain wrong.

Hot summer day, chaise lounge, beach, cold drinks, all my friends hanging out. The hazy, hot halcyon days and sultry nights of my youth. Spent living life to it's full, and music like this was it's soundtrack.
Lance Russ (5 days ago)
If you listen closely thought THAT was Ronnie Dunn obviously it isn't tho
Thomas Giella (6 days ago)
It's a dead heat to me, their voices are exactly the same.
Halimous Bathyal (9 days ago)
"We" know whose song this is. He sings a manly love song for his lady love. As real as that mountain, there.
Viking Power (11 days ago)
The original version, the best as well. This man has the voice of an Angel.
Gary Livick (11 days ago)
My God.....what a wonderful memory from the 70's....the greatest generation of all time!
Anthem 2112 (12 days ago)
Listen to the drumming in this song...wicked!
TC Smith (12 days ago)
My opinion, those other guys (Brooks & Dunn) did a COPY, not a cover. BW or BuckWheat did the original. He wrote it. Had the odd pleasure of meeting him at the Howard Johnson  in College Station 1974 when my girlfriend and I went to Willies 4th of July Picnic at the Speedway. I'm getting old, I miss those days.

Listening in 2020 - and STILL a great song!
Mr GatesDog (17 days ago)
I probably just prefer the B&D version, BUT I love this too!!
Daniel Delaney (17 days ago)
Three dog night has a version and it is pretty good but when I think of this song I will always think of the original one sung by B.W.

People that think music from the 70's was the best music, never listened to music from the 60's !
minggnim (21 days ago)
Both versions are good.
caljn 1 (23 days ago)
Dig this guys voice. So authentic. And real instruments too! We were indeed fortunate...
Sandra Merimee (26 days ago)
Wish my name was Maria!
Brian Goodman (29 days ago)
Saw BW playing solo in a crappy little no cover dive club in North Austin in 1978.  He was sweating profusely, but I do not recall it being that hot. Austin was a great music town then....now not so much.

OMG!!! Met BW at the Holiday Inn in College Station TX in 1974. Willie Nelson's 2nd Annual 4th of July Picnic at Texas World Speedway. This is the original!! some other band covered both his big hits but folks seem to forget the originals.

"B.W." stood for "Buckwheat". Stevenson was born in Dallas, Texas, and died following heart valve surgery after developing a staph infection at the age of 38. "My Maria" reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the week ending Sept. 29, 1973.
Jack Thompson (2 months ago)
Let's get something straight...this is the original & BEST version of this song. Period.
John Smith (20 days ago)
Who put you in charge Bubba ?   Must be from Chicago. Period.
MidwestPatriot (21 days ago)
@Bob Blaszczak I think it's clear why he will never be better than Dunn.
Bob Blaszczak (21 days ago)
You said he never will be better. How can he possibly get better if he is longer on the planet. That's all. And I happen to agree with JT. But again... It's just an opinion.
MidwestPatriot (21 days ago)
@Bob Blaszczak So is Jack Thompson's comment about this being the original and best version. Yet you didn't say anything about him making ridiculous statements. It doesn't matter that this guy has passed on in regard to which version is the best.

Back in the mid-1970's, I had a record player. I somehow accumulated four 45's and this was one of them. Feelin' Stronger Every Day by Chicago was another. Those were the first four rock songs I ever knew.
chuck finley (3 months ago)
with Jim Gordon and Joe Osborn on the back beat how could you go wrong?
Nikki Roeder (3 months ago)
Yes . This is the best. It belongs to us in 1973.

@TBNR Hunter Whats your point HACK poster!
TBNR Hunter (3 months ago)
@NW Fly Guy i want to see you make your own song... if you're not a "hack" that is
NW Fly Guy (4 months ago)
just goes to show most country bands are a bunch of untalented musician hacks who have to duplicate others music. B&D just made the same song identical and claimed it as their own..
aliyamoon80 (5 months ago)
I know, right??? I love this version! B&D sounds like crap!
Hey_ Joe (5 months ago)
When i was a kid living through it, i never liked this. wasn't until decades later the country version of this came out, that i appreciated this. Now i love it and hate the country version.

i hate when artists take a hit record..and remake it cause they cant write songs themselves.[i know record companies used to force artists to do it...and b4 the beatles .even songwriters like chuck berry and buddy holly still filled their albums up with others songs...but to lose the TALENT of 1965 to 1980 is a big tragedy. people could write their own songs...not derivative rip offs but real individual music and hammer it into their style and make it something you want to hear. like wow bw found a way to almost yodle in this song and make it really appealing. and many ''artists'' throughout music did not have a clue and used the same instruments on every album without change...to me rock through 56 to 74 was really great..i was 11 in 74..so im its not my generation at all...perhaps too much lead got in the soil from cars and kids are born dumber than generations ago or their music genes are bad ....but how we did regress from singers being ridiculed for having hits of others 66-75ish to just being normal...i say write your own song and play your own instrument and sing with your own voice or join a band or get of the stage/media ....[one can still play instruments or write songs for others and be in the industry..and i dont mind a hit written bysomeone else..if its never been a hit b4] but dont take my memory of this great..my maria..and record it because you are just a propped up commodity for the industry.......THIS IS WHAT I WOULD OF WRITTEN DECADEs AGO...NOW THE WORLD IS DOWN THE TUBES AND IT DOESNT MATTER..too many sellouts

BJ had it right, Brooks and Donn did a good job. I like this one the most. Listen to them both. Hard decision...
Simon Hitch (21 days ago)
With Buck's vocals and drumming by the legendary wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Gordon_(musician) it has to be this one. B&D too formula.
Edmond Dantes (4 months ago)
Not for me, BJ, hands down

He died way, way, way too ..... Young ! RIP Buck Wheat :-)
Ray Cooper (7 months ago)
This song was released right before I got out of the Army in 1973. At the time I was stationed in northern Virginia awaiting discharge. It was a hit but never got the acclaim it was due. Stevenson was only 24 at the time and when I moved back to Texas he was often playing local clubs in and around Austin where I moved to. My wife and I would go watch him and his voice was perfect. He died way to young at only 38.
