Blue footed booby(bird)? From Wikipedia: "The blue color of the blue-footed booby's webbed feet comes from carotenoid pigments obtained from its diet of fresh fish. Carotenoids act as antioxidants and stimulants for the blue-footed booby's immune function, suggesting that carotenoid-pigmentation is an indicator of an individual's immunological state."

Lidia Lidia (14 days ago)
are they kidding?! 😵 they are confusing things that have no connection, pigment and refraction of the light spectrum. if a pigment appears blue, it's because it absorbs all the spectra of color except what we see as blue. It's called REFRACTION! (sorry for my english) bye from Italy
Knut Knusprig (15 days ago)
Am I crazy or did they just claim that colors except for blue are something else than light waves/particles being absorbed and partially reflected to be perceived by color cones in the eye and interpreted by the brain as a "color"? Like.. how is blue a non color and the others are :D Colors are just an illusion that helped our ancestors survive in the wild right - isn't it all just surface structures and materials?
Dhanush Gopal (16 days ago)
Bruh.. the "Blue" Pigment just absorbs the other colors except blue. These animals that are supposedly tricking us are just reflecting blue back. Not much of a difference. Color is just how the living things are perceiving the visible spectrum. How it is being made doesn't make the color fake.

Ephenei (23 days ago)
Something bothers me in this video, they never explain what they mean by "true pigments" or "true blue. I always thought that the phenomenon they mentioned was the explanation for ALL of the colours we see (For example: Something green appears green because it absorbs everything but the "green" rays) and I don't understand why this makes it a "fake" blue. Can someone explain please?

appear, pretend, fake blue... every, really every single animal in the whole world don't bother which color you name it.
Aliyah Abrahams (1 month ago)
I just read that the tree frog has 'layered pigments' that appear blue, rather than blue pigments, of course, in the end, like every other animal mentioned, they reflect blue light, which makes them blue.
Aliyah Abrahams (1 month ago)
Whether it's by pigments (chemistry) or by physics, if it's reflecting blue light, it's blue. That's not "fake" and it's not a "trick" it's just a different way of getting the same result without using pigment. And the fact that the video says that animals cannot be 'blue' (because apparently, being blue without using pigments means you aren't really blue) and then goes on to list two examples of animals with blue pigments... I didn't expect Nat Geo to use clickbait.

Shih Yuin Chew (1 month ago)
For those who struggle for the definition of color: Color, scientifically, is not light we perceived of an object, but light reflected of an object DIFFUSELY. This diffuse reflection is key, because it means no matter from which angle you look, you will be able to catch the color as it is. However, when it’s physical structures that scatter light in a manner to make you see only blue light at a certain angle, we cannot say that the object ITSELF is blue, because it’s more like you see blue FROM A CERTAIN RANGE OF ANGLE rather than it’s blue by itself from all angle. Hope it clears the air. :)
