A very well done video, so a big thank you to all involved in its production. Captain proved that you can not beat experience. Truly a hero in my opinion. Best to all.

The show "why planes crash" has become redundant explaining the fundamental principles that caused the crashes. Younger pilots are equipped with more auto pilot options and although they are taught how to do everything manually, they don't get much experience with manually flying. Imagine arithmetic before calculators. Math professionals would remain elastic and pathways that are fired while calculating arithmetic stay healthy. This is the pilot who has been flying since Vietnam and is confident with controlling the craft when things get out of control. My uncle flew helicopters in Vietnam and lost count of how many times he had to manually control a crash due to taking fire at very low altitude. Slamming the ground hurt but he lived. He said knowing how to disengage would not be enough when you are just a few seconds above the ground. He said "when the sugar turned to shit, muscle memory is what saved them." Now pilots have been reported bringing the nose up to recover from a stall! When you are decreasing speed as an attempt to assend, you have been on auto pilot too much and u need to take physics

About computer control. It must be programmed in. If a new situation presents itself, that the program is not written to handle, it cannot handle it, and won't. Long after the fact, the programmers program in the change, taking a month to do so in a corporate programming environment. This doesn't help the unfortunates in the airplane. Computers are great, but lack the flexibility of a living organism. They're fast and accurate, but fast and accurate doesn't help if the program doesn't have instructions for the new situation.I was over 20 years in IT, handling decision support wireless networking, and database. "Computers are great, WHEN THEY WORK", is an often told joke, but it's not really a joke.Total automation of the cockpit is coming, as is the self driving car. Can't stop it. In fact, total automation of every work function is coming. Compare the factory of 1920 with the factory of today. Look at the kiosk design McDonalds. One day, humans will not be needed at all to produce, service, or design anything. I don't think I want to see that day, but what I want is irrelevant. The need for MORE drives this, and cannot be stopped. Orwell was too optimistic.

Design flaws bring law suits..cost money. So Pilot error is the scapegoat. After all...pilot's usually dead...who's going to argue!
Frederick Kiel (6 days ago)
I wonder if passengers were told they were returning to airport because of "minor technical glitch" or a "HOLY SH-T! WE MAY ALL DIE" problem?"

Glad all end well. I've seen similar incident with another DC=10 that crash landed in Iowa and some people lost their live but not devastated.

I think any airplane with an engine near those flight controls is just stupid. Who in the hell thought of that, its pure stupidity. IF, you want to put something there, put the flight deck.
Eric Rogers (10 days ago)
people that design and build things, need one more quality control to look at it. Not anyone familiar with aviation, but people from all walks of life, who are just asked, to open and close doors as best they can. WITHOUT any guidance or hints or instructions.

Graphics don't crash; computer programs do though and so do bad representations!
See The Future (10 days ago)
The DC10 is the best example of paper pusher executives forcing a rush job and short cuts taking priority over good engineering. It was criminal how the DC10 was brought into active service with so many critical design flaws.

I have been watching the Channel for quite some time and this is the first time I am disappointed. I am disappointed by the presence of Chinese sub-titles. I've never seen these before. These videos are not narrated and are provided with a written commentary. The Chinese sub-tiles quite often overlap the written commentary such that I could not see the latter. I can read Chinese but I cannot possibly read both the English commentary and the Chinese sub-titles at the same time. I have to choose. I chose the original English commentary for 2 reasons. 1. It is accurate; 2. the Chinese sub-tiles are poorly translated and inaccurate. Whatever the reasons Chinese sub-titles are here, it probably is time to think again whether these should be here. I would want to continue watching the Channel. Hopefully without a distraction like this.

FlightChannel- you put a lot of work into this. I'd be happy to help you remove some of the red flag comments which industry people see as questionable. Unless an airplane is stalled or completely out of control it's descending, not the dramatic "falling" as you state. Transport jets usually descend at 700-800 fpm on final approach but enroute descents often involve 3,000 to 4,000 fpm. There are a few other things that can be cleaned up and bring out the full effect of your effort. Experienced jet transport pilot not looking for compensation. Cheers

In 1992 my wife and I took AA San Jose, CA to Puerto Rico to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the founding of PR. I guess all the problems of the DC10 had been cleared up by then because our flight there and back was in a DC10 and we had absolutely no issues.

4:51, cockpit view, show a/c banking left. 5:02, caption says " The rudder, which controls direction of the jet, is jammed to the right.. 5:09 caption says "Thats why the plane is banking in that direction ".... WTF ??? First of all, ailerons make the plane bank, second, with the rudder fully deflected to the right, there is no way the airplane would be banking to the left, as shown in the cockpit and outside view..

That's why I & Flight Officer always did full detail walk about, after I serviced the L1011 all night, and always on belt, $100 high out put flash light to see clearly to top of tail.
Cargo handlers are the most destructive agents to ever touch aircraft.
Id have to spend many hours repairing nightly what they destroy, just in the cargo bay area.
They are throwing 50_80 lb hard body luggage no different than Samsonite gorilla testers.

Airliner design run like software development. No what-if mentality, time and money pressure as always in capitalism - gotta compete. This was gross negligence during development and there should be lawsuits based on that. There's a process called "verification" that should be standard for development of highly critical things like airliners. It means logically examining systems in order to eliminate all possible problem causes and make sure no mistakes were made. Verification can be very powerful when applied together with solemny devoted amateur professionals who have passenger safety at heart not because of fear of lawsuits but out of conviction. Engineers just 'doing their thing' is a horror, and whenever someone says air travel is statistically safer than car travel, I tell them my expertise falls outside of those statistics. (Although technical and human errors are two different things. But with a car I have more control over maintenance quality, too.)

Great control, having over 29000 hours in the seat I know what this captain went through and it was tough! DC10's always had issues and never liked flying them, will stick with the 747 till retirement, had offer to fly private DC10 and double my salary but turned it down, life is worth living.
