Today's video will all be about the fuel jettison procedure, or better known as "FUEL DUMPING". Why do pilots dump costly fuel overboard, after you´ve just paid for it as a passenger? And what a terrible pollution of the environment! So pilots have to have a good enough reason why they do that? As jets began flying with US airlines in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the FAA rule in effect at the time mandated that if the ratio between an aircraft's maximum structural takeoff weight and its maximum structural landing weight was greater than 105%, the aircraft had to have a fuel dump system installed. Aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and 727 and the Douglas DC-8 had fuel dump systems. Any of those aircraft needing to return to a takeoff airport above the maximum landing weight would jettison an amount of fuel sufficient to reduce the aircraft's weight below that maximum landing weight limit and then land. And in our case, we have a medical emergency just beyond the coast of Scottland which forces us to land at the next suitable airport, which is Dublin. Then we´ll do the math on how much fuel we actually have to dump in order to safely land at Dublin airport below the maximum landing weight to not damage the airplane. We´ll quickly go over the fuel dumping panel and the actual fuel dumping hose of the Boeing 747. I hope you enjoy this basic explanation video on the fuel dumping procedure. This guy just made a video about planes that is 9:11 in length
StarSaphire9981 (22 hours ago)
Wait, is fuel dumping the reason why you see white streaks coming from the wings of the plane when you’re watch from the ground? I always thought the white streaks is a cool pattern made by the wings cutting through the air, creating lined clouds which soon disperse... wow. Life was a lie lol.
Mike P (12 hours ago)
Those white trails are not caused by fuel dumping. They are condensation trails which are produced by aircraft engine exhaust when the water in aircraft engine exhaust condenses. They are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals. Condensation trails have nothing to do with fuel dumping, and fuel dumping is rare because it is only done in an emergency situation, not all the time.

Wow, I’m a 744 pilot and I always wondered why the 800 failed so badly in pax config? Your numbers just gave me the answer!
Dionysios Tz (2 days ago)
Are you thinking that all pepole are so stupid? Dont tell bulshit! You are long time already dumping the CHEMTRAILS !!!!
Hoodiez (3 days ago)
Anyone else realize how long the video is and he's talking about planes
Henry Discipline (3 days ago)
It's often done through vanity, an airline that is able to demonstrate fuel dumping as it comes into land is considered especially solvent and viable.
maht abdullah (3 days ago)
Captain you gonna make university professors losting their job! I learned more in this 2 minute then in my last2 years of the class room.. Thanks captain!

Wait a second “make sure your not over your maximum landing weight” did he just fat shame me???????!?!!!!??? 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Blue Fluke (4 days ago)
i noticed the only potential downside mentioned of an overweight landing was to the aircraft. Nothing mentioned about the pax. Collateral damage?
Peter O'Neill (4 days ago)
Glasgow GLA/EGPH is nearer than Dublin. Just saying.
A ANTICASTROS (4 days ago)
OmegaLuL (5 days ago)
Not rocket science, high fuel = more weight = damage to plane or even explosion Low fuel = less weight no damage to plane and everyone is safe That's why they dump the fuel
Rafael Almeida (5 days ago)
Why don't they make a stronger plane?
Mike P (5 days ago)
Weight is the reason.
Matthew Alanis (6 days ago)
Did anyone notice this video is about planes and it’s 9:11 long ?? 911 ✈️

Anyone here after Delta dumped fuel over some innocent playground kids?
Sandro A (8 days ago)
The kids will be fine
Vishu A (8 days ago)
Why didn't they make planes which can have same landing and take-off weight ?
James Woods (8 days ago)
Planes should be banned from flying. And ones flying should be shot down.
ツRoyalPillows (9 days ago)
Is it only me that thought those were rockets when I was younger?
MrAnakin1996 (9 days ago)
Some call it "fuel dumping". Professionals commonly refer to it as "The Delta Procedure".

What are the odds I just happened to be watching this, then all of the sudden a plane just did this over a California elementary school as I was watching lol I was well informed on what was happening when I saw it though thanks to your great video!

I'm here because Delta dropped fuel on a city on school zones
Sandro A (8 days ago)

Paul Halmel (17 days ago)
The plane isnt actualy dumping fuel, its spraying chemtrails XD
c0mpu73rguy (17 days ago)
I wish there was a way to dump the fuel and recover it later on. But I don’t think that’s possible sadly.
kuru Seikatsu (18 days ago)
Why don't they just dump pax.

Captain JOE, greetings ! Great one thanks for sharing your wonderful vid
Teresa Martins (20 days ago)
It's so much fun listening to actual pilots explaining everything you should know about planes.
Louise M (22 days ago)
It's an aeroplane and it's maths not math.
mai2myaccount (19 days ago)
You are absolutely wrong with the reason for fuel dumping. You better do your research first before you explain nonsense to the public. From a certification point of view any aircraft must be capable of landing with its takeoff weight. Have you ever hearted anything about (missed) approach climb gradient? Do you know anything about (missed) approach climb gradient limited weight? Well then go back to your aerodynamics books and start reading :-)
Travis (23 days ago)
Is this where people come up with the concept of chem-trails? Or is a so called chem-trail nothing more than a contrail? I always thought it was just dependant on the amount of moisture in the air but that's just a guess on my part.
Jarrah Jamal (24 days ago)
Your not a captain your a first officer
nicole burke (25 days ago)
Thank you for this video . I have a question .......I have never seen a ugly pilot .....they are all handsome . Could someone explain !
Joshka Kaiser (26 days ago)
That's so ironic! That flight path and situation actually happened while I was flying from London to lax! 2004! An indian woman was about to give birth on the plane and we were over iceland when they turned around and went low and jettisoned fuel all the to Dublin. I spent 24 hours on that plane since they had to refuel and THEN AFTER ALL PREGNANT WOMEN GOT OFF THE PLANE, WE RESUMED OUT FLIGHT PLAN. THX BRITISH AIRWAYS! AT LEAST YOU HANDLED IT LIKE A CHAMP
Bobocean342 (26 days ago)
In the thumbnail he looks proud for dumping fuel

CRAZO R6 (29 days ago)
I absolutely love your videos, but please use decimals instead if commas and your #1 numbers could use some cosmetics as well. A very small tweak but for those not as adequate with math it could be a major difference. major plus your #7’s!

If there is A LOT OF DAMAGE to the plane when landing overweight... just flex tape it.
Milwaukee Brewers (29 days ago)
What about when a plane takes off and within minutes someone catches a stroke or for whatever reason you have to land, are you going to dump a shit load of fuel?
ZK-APA (27 days ago)
Milwaukee Brewers unfortunately yes
Bailey DuBrasky (1 month ago)
so can you dump passengers overboard as well?
Matt Nguyen (1 month ago)
They dump fuel in the air for clouds and for everyone to see the plane
Finn Winter (1 month ago)
Hello Joe I have a question, it wouldn't be better if you push a plane backwards into the parking position at the airport, that it can then roll forward again forward This text has been translated with google translator so it may be the error in it Thank you nice times in advance
Mike P (1 month ago)
That is the normal procedure today. The aircraft is pushed backwards from the gate using a pushback tug, and after that the aircraft uses its engines for taxiing to the runway.

Don't waste fuels the world airline is wasting more fuel than other transport it we need it? ... why do we not trying to another... alternative option
ZK-APA (1 month ago)
Zabiulla Saddham because it’s not a normal routine, but an emergency routine. It’s only done if it’s the only option available.

7:20 Smaller jets like the 737 have to hold a flying pattern to burn the fuel off..... So just fly to your destination!!

Fule dumping is just evil. How does confess allow this. I see those trails over my city all the time!
Mike P (1 month ago)
The aircraft dump fuel only in an emergency situation. You said that you see those trails all the time. If you see them all the time they are the contrails from the jet engines because water vapor condenses from aircraft engine exhaust. Contrails mainly consist of small ice crystals. This is a normal phenomenon. Those trails have nothing to do with the fuel dumping. The aircraft don't dump fuel all the time. The fuel dumping is rare because it is only done in an emergency situation. These are normal contrails from the engines:

So are you guys the ones starting forest fires. That stuff is very flammable.
Dominic Lovato (1 month ago)
@Mike P I get what your saying. I'm not a chemist but water has a lower boiling point I would assume. So if water in a lake would evaporate from the sun at a certain rate. Now from 30k ft for jet fuel to evaporate until it hit the ground or tree or a mountain. Some off it won't touch the ground.
Mike P (1 month ago)
@Dominic Lovato - It evaporates in the air. It doesn't spread on the ground.
Dominic Lovato (1 month ago)
@Mike P its a liquid though
Mike P (1 month ago)
It doesn't reach the ground, it dissipates in the air.
jaue82 (1 month ago)
So when you buy a ticket. Sign a waiver. If you have medical emergency you are screwed. Save one person having heart attack give cancer to God knows how many with jet fuel rain.
jaue82 (1 month ago)
@Mike P still toxic chemicals in the air that weren't there before. Still better to let that person pass than it is to take jet fuel and make it an aerosol over people.
Mike P (1 month ago)
The fuel dissipates in the air before it reaches the ground.
SCU Later (1 month ago)
Is it a coincidence that the length before clicking the video says 9:11 lol?
max mackinlay (1 month ago)
It would be cheaper just to dump every ones luggage and just give them a voucher.
dizzybynature (1 month ago)
depends on who you ask.. Alex Jones says its chem trails turning the frogs gay.. gee, i wonder who im gonna believe; a pilot with knowledge and experience or AJ..

Dumping fuel wounder why people are getting sick or does the fuel land on the ocean and poisen the fish we eat
Mike P (1 month ago)
The fuel dissipates in the air before it reaches the ground.
Ghostgaming (1 month ago)
If the pilot activates the fuel dumping and the fuel is being dumped is the fuel evaporated before it can hit the ground or are there some gemicals that don't evaporate?
Carlos Hernandez (1 month ago)
Dude! How dare you drop math on the unsuspecting masses? Great video. Always wondered who cleaned up the fuel after a dump. Also, in the event of such an emergency (i.e. passenger has medical issue), who pays for the lost fuel?
VikingBiker (1 month ago)
Wouldnt be cheaper to just have an ejectable tank in the plane? The plane pumps all the fuel it needs to get rid off there, ejects it on the ocean and then it can be recovered.
ZK-APA (1 month ago)
VikingBiker no, it’ll be more expensive, as having that system in the first case will increase costs as well as generic fuel consumption
Video just happens to be 9:11 long...
Rolex Kings (1 month ago)
Funny enough I had to perform the fuel jettison procedure earlier today in the PMDG B748...had to circle at fl260 outside KLAX. The good thing is the new B748 displays the time remaining to jetiison fuel.

So..... I could become really rich if I just invent better landing gear??? This whole exercise seems crazy, dumping jet fuel over the general public. Why not work a little harder on the landing gear then its a non-issue.
Mike P (1 month ago)
That will just increase the weight further. The problem isn't so big because the fuel dumping is only done in an emergency situation, so it's rare when it happens.
