Today's video will all be about the fuel jettison procedure, or better known as "FUEL DUMPING". Why do pilots dump costly fuel overboard, after you´ve just paid for it as a passenger? And what a terrible pollution of the environment! So pilots have to have a good enough reason why they do that? As jets began flying with US airlines in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the FAA rule in effect at the time mandated that if the ratio between an aircraft's maximum structural takeoff weight and its maximum structural landing weight was greater than 105%, the aircraft had to have a fuel dump system installed. Aircraft such as the Boeing 707 and 727 and the Douglas DC-8 had fuel dump systems. Any of those aircraft needing to return to a takeoff airport above the maximum landing weight would jettison an amount of fuel sufficient to reduce the aircraft's weight below that maximum landing weight limit and then land. And in our case, we have a medical emergency just beyond the coast of Scottland which forces us to land at the next suitable airport, which is Dublin. Then we´ll do the math on how much fuel we actually have to dump in order to safely land at Dublin airport below the maximum landing weight to not damage the airplane. We´ll quickly go over the fuel dumping panel and the actual fuel dumping hose of the Boeing 747. I hope you enjoy this basic explanation video on the fuel dumping procedure. BIG THANK YOU to my fellow subscribers who sent in the subtitles in their language, really appreciate your work!!! Because I am a lowly private citizen I will be put in jail and fined huge amounts of money for dumping my lawnmowers gas tank (about a pint) on the ground. However, airlines who pay large sums of money to politicians and other government workers can routinely dump 10's of thousands of gallons of jet fuel without concern. Once again America's Two-Tiered Justice System hard at work!

Technically, the plane burns less fuel per minute as it dumps fuel because it's getting lighter by the second; I imagine that's taken into consideration.
sunny jacob (8 days ago)
A couple of questions Capt. 1. Is it safe to dump fuel while an engine on fire ? and 2. Is it a 'crime' worth an investigation and a show cause notice to pilots if they miss a approach and decide to do a go around and make another attempt? I have seen some reports where pilots have been suspended due to such incidents?
ZK-APA (8 days ago)
For 1 it depends on the severity of the fire For 2 it’s not a crime if you just make a go around and make another approach because it’s normal. But as you said, if pilots are getting suspended, it’s more so because of the incident which caused the go around, rather than the go around itself

Does anybody believe this BS ?? It´s CR@P. It does not make sense just by reading the specs. If the Max Take off Weigh is 254 Tn, the Max Landing Weigh is 192 Tn, the empty zero weigh is 181 Tn, the required Fuel for the Boeing 787-9 is 126,372 Litres = 101,456 kg, 200 passengers weighing 70 kg average + 30 kg suitcase each, we reach 302 Tn before Taking Off. How on Earth is this possible ?? Is it not FRAUDulent Information ? Why to complain about the fuel if it costs so much, your ticket must be pricey, your suitcase strictly weighed and then on landing they tell us they could just dump upto 100 Tn ?? How long does it take to dump that much ?? How long does it take to refuel ?? Have you ever pondered where that vast amount of fuel is kept inside the plane, because if I am not wrong occupies 1/3 the volume of the whole Plane ?? !! Is it not ludicrous ?? For what I know it's all LIES, these planes do not need that much fuel as their turbo engines are capable of running with the electricity they generate through their electric coils. This massive Fraud is to make us think CHEM TRAILS are not real, but they are because they are carried on by empty commercial liners adapted by the military to pollute the air, to dissipate cloud formation and so to reduce the RAIN fall in certain populated areas. Later they have the excuse it is all due to Climate Change when in fact it is CLIMATE MANIPULATION. They are taking us for absolute FOOLS.
shi01 (2 days ago)
@Raymundo Wellington Being drunk is not a medical emergency and i believe you that you never experienced a fuel dump because the chances are rather slim. First of all, only long range airliners are capable of dumiping fuel. Smaller airliners like the 737 or A320 aren't equiped with the necessary system. Secondly even if you are on a long haul flight chances are low to ever experience a fuel dump. And for going bust, well why then is the outcome for airlines so high? Because apparently they don't earn enough money with the tickets to balance their outcome. I mean an aircraft which hardly needs any fuel but can carry 300 or more passangers, especially with buissines and first class, would be a gold mine, wouldn't it? So somehow this aircrafts seem to be very expensive to run. Oh yeah, for where the fuel is stored. Have you ever done a rough calculation of the inner volume of such a wing by's a hypothetical question, i know you didn't.
Raymundo Wellington (2 days ago)
@shi01 It does not make sense even in the event of an emergency. I nor anyone I am aware of have ever experienced that sort of BS when someone was drunk and the captain took the decision to land on. Besides, we are ignoring the issue of Volume. Where the effing is the huge amount of fuel held ?? Companies go bust because they are unable to balance income with outcome. That simple. It's like having a mortgage and you cannot afford any more payments when going unemployed.
shi01 (3 days ago)
Well, if they don't need much fuel, then why so many airlines have gone bust in the last few months? Apparently at least something makes these aircraft quite expansive to run. The max zero fuel weight is exactly what it sais. The maximum allowed weight without fuel but otherwise with everything loaded. That simply means you can't fill up the aircraft to the brim with fuel, which simply means you will have less range. And that is absolutly viable because many routes they fly with such aircraft are far shorter than their theoretical maximum range. Also, they only dump fuel when they need to land much earlier than planed, which can happend due to technical problems or medical emergencies. It's very simple, if you start for instance in Paris to cross the atlantic, but then you have to land in Dublin because of some engine problems, you probably have quite a lot of fuel left.

what a waste of precious source of energy, does not help our planet, can they not fasten a parachute to the heart attack patient and push him out of the plane at a lower altitude straight into the nearest hospital! carpark where medical staff can deal with the Heart attack passenger. 😁

Guru of Fun (26 days ago)
dumping 77 tons of fuel? wouldnt make much more sense to expel/eject ( parachuted down / eventually piloted to safe areas ) a tank placed in the rear belly if releasing a couple of external tanks attached under the wings ( drop tanks ) or a CFT create too much drag during the flight? The crooked chain of command in the industry dont allow the engineers to develop and implement ideas already used on military aircrafts since WW II
ZK-APA (22 days ago)
That's impractical because the chance of having to do a fuel dump is so low that the added complexity would negate any advantage.
Se7en (26 days ago)

Mike P (29 days ago)
@DrKleiner0815 - Yes, that's what happens. But it is rare when they have to dump fuel because it is only done in an emergency situation.

they dump fuel because the pilot had to make a emergency landing so they dump fuel so pilot can easily land the plane down safely at low speed, instead of landing at higher airspeed.

So, you’re telling me that, for all the times that I’ve seen this, a person is having a heart attack? That’s a lot of heart attacks.. Fym?

Why not build extra H2 tanks, kerosene fuel for the trip plus some extra for emergency, the rest of the take off weight H2, dump steam to reach landing weight? Or make planes run on H2! We have durable materials today, Hindenburg scenario impossible!

Hey Joe, Can you do a cabin procedures video or series, like arm and cross check doors blah blah blah?
wayne Last (1 month ago)
The key question is HOW OFTEN do they dump fuel?
ZK-APA (1 month ago)
wayne Last there is no set answer. Its an emergency procedure, so its only done if its needed (remember even airlines hate dumping fuel because they are paying for it) Moreover not all planes can dump fuel. Narrow body planes (A320,B737 or any smaller) don’t have fuel dumping mechanism. Its just the wide body planes which have it. So if you actually calculate it percentage wise, its close to nil. Ps I am not saying fuel dumping is a good thing. Its not. But its understandable that why its done, and why are there no other alternates.
wayne Last (1 month ago)
ZK-APA what’s that mean? What percent of flights dump fuel? Some types of flights more than others?
ZK-APA (1 month ago)
wayne Last very very rare. Maybe in the low double digits per year.

Just show me you dumping fuel. Because if ime meant to believe its all in the wings I don't buy it . Compressed air gets pumped in not fuel.some fuel is needed.air o plane. Don't buy it.think about it Two tons a minute And F1 car filled in 1.6 seconds do me a favour get a bigger fuel tank for the F1 or stop lieing to the people.and charging dollar
Sexi Grande (1 month ago)
Compressed air get pumped? Not fuel? Fuel can be stored in the fuselage as well not just the wings. Are you one those fuel hoax people? I’ve never seen any reason for a conspiracy and I’m an aircraft mechanic. I’ve worked on fuel systems doing heavy overhaul work on lockeed Martin p-3 Orion aircraft.
