Why Time is One of Humanity's Greatest Inventions

22080 ratings | 1060104 views
Time has a fascinating history. Much of our modern world wouldn't be what it is today without the development of better and better clocks. From clocks that use pendulums, to those that use cesium, this video covers the complete history of one of humanity's greatest inventions. I say that shifting work from results to hours-worked was a travesty. Imagine how much more productive we all would be if we were all paid on results

Eh ehm, we did not invent time we discovered the phenomenon and found a way to measure it

Humans didn't invent time. Time existed way before. We just found out about it.

The GPS device is not asking what time it is....it only receives information from satellites ....imagine every GPS device is sending queries to satellites, and another problem could be hacking the satellites :)

5:04 Atomic clocks don't use radioactive decay or radioactive elements: Radioactive decay is inherently random and would make for an inconsistent clock. Atomic clocks look at the ELECTRONS of specific elements (like the Caesium which is shown at 5:09) and how these electrons change states. Nothing to do with decay.

I wish you had mentioned pocket watches/spring powered clocks. They made clocks portable and more importantly, they worked on ships where pendulum clocks wouldn't as the rocking motion of the ships would disrupt the pendulum movement.

Time itself is not a human construct. The measurement of the observation of time might be, depending on who is observing or how this observation is defined. However time is not a human invention.

👎Your logic is heavily flawed, almost arrogant. To think that we as humans can even think to posit we can apply such explanations to the grandiose scaffolding that is the universe and how it unfolds. What we label as time & space or spacetime (kudos Einstein) initially began with what we call or infer to be the Big Bang, or Genesis (for the religious). We come along almost 14 billion years later whistling dixie, like some omniscient Don Quixote ... and think WE invented TIME as a thought, construct or perception of our mind on how we percieve reality unfolding? It's super arrogant. I don't think it works like that, we don't INVENT the laws of nature, just observe, understand and report. My opinion at least, your welcome.

A nice video, just one thing to point out: the need for the leap days and earth irregular rotation was noticed long before the quartz clock. Even long before Jesus

Its even more interesting that with such percise time measurements as atomic decay, we were able to translate that into percise measurements for things like distance based on the speed of light which is obviously based on time and distance

This video has been poorly researched. The pendulum clock was no use at sea. It was the invention of the marine chronometer that solved the longitude problem of oceanic navigation. Also it is absurdly naive to claim the pendulum clock appeared in every house one hundred years after its invention. There is no way ordinary people of that era could afford such an expensive item.

Worth pointing out that time is one of the few concepts to have a globally agreed-upon unit of measurement. We can't even agree on something as simple as how to measure the distance to the end of the street, but we can all agree on how long it takes to get there.
Quand9 (3 months ago)
Man, this video is full of mistakes. The difference of the length of the day is the measurements when compared to the stars or the sun. Leap seconds are year are to accommodate for the fact that a year is not 365 days. The theres the slow down of Earth's rotation as measured by atomic clocks but that's a tiny amount
lostn65 (3 months ago)
we didn't invent time, we invented clocks.

There is a book written about this. Longitude by Dava Sobel. The guy who won the prize was named Harrison, but I believe he was beaten out of the prize money
David Phipps (6 months ago)
Wendover clearly doesn't understand the concept that 1 rotation of the earth, doesn't equal a day, and never did for any point in history. 1 Rotation puts the stars in the same spot and the earths rotation is very regular, just slowly down extremely slowly, not off by a few seconds like he says. A day is the time it takes to put the sun in the same longitude in the sky and that varies because of the earth's tilt and not perfectly spherical orbit. It doesn't equal exactly 24 hours on average, it a little more than that, so hence the need for leap seconds. Has nothing to do with Leap days.
Tyler Durden (6 months ago)
While I love these videos, there needs to be some accountability for wrong information. Some kid is going to do a project on navigation, get the info here and he is going to fail. How could you research pendulum clocks and not find Harrison.

So cringy calling time a human invention, we didn't invent time, you cannot build time, you cannot make a blueprint of time, it is not something you "invent" lmao time was discovered, fuck what's next, did humans invent the moon in 1969 as well? Or did the Soviets invent space when they launched Sputnik up in 1957?

Wendover I notice that sometimes your voice rises in pitch at the end of a sentence or sentence clause, like 4:38. It's called HRT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_rising_terminal. We could make a drinking game out of it, take a shot every time you upspeak lmfao
majnolajno44 (8 months ago)
Leap days have to do with the Earth not orbiting the sun in exactly 365 days, not with Earth not rotating in exactly 24 hours. You put those two separate issues into one basket at 5:32. Great video otherwise
