I remember that day when Jr was going for the lead. It was so rare for him to not lead the race for that long. I was screaming my ass off when he took the lead. That Caution messed it all up though.

I remember watching this as a little kid, and observing that Leffler made contact on both of his first two pit stops. And then got spun around on his last (before crashing out, not by his own doing.) Not a good day for him.

Crazy how much they were talking about manufacturers even for 2005. They never talk about it now cut they’re all the same.

I miss this type of racing. The gen 4 cars were amazing at super speedways.

I'm a Dale Jr fan since 1998 when he was actually dominating till 2000. I will say I am not a huge Stewart fan but I would have liked to see him push Tony to the win and the return the favor. Anything better then seeing Gordon weasel his way to another win but I got the last laugh as Jimmie Johnson Jeff Gordon's apprentice, who Gordon had half the owner rights at first pretty much backfired on Gordon. Jimmie stole most of his thunder as he never won a championship again. Sure he will say he's proud of Jimmie Johnson after all these years to the media, but u know that's got to bother him inside. What if I didn't put Johnson in a Hendrick car? How many championships could I have won? There's is no debating Jimmies poor stats before Hendrick and I dont think Jimmie would have been as good without Chad. We shall see come 2019 with the split. Dale Earnhardt Jr just didn't care as much after he lost his Dad plus the concussions. Jr will admit only reason he raced was to impress his Dad. I dont care if yall disagree with me but those r mostly facts.
ryan trout (3 months ago)
Sorry how many championships did Jr win?
william carson (6 months ago)
Mostly, so which part is full of crap ?
Jason Robinson (10 months ago)
Dalejr183 , Dale jr was a joke I was surprised he did not die like his dad. He was ok when he went to Hendrick motorsport. Jeff Gordon was way better then Jimmy . Gordon would of had 7 titles is they did not go to the gay chase format.

Good daytona 500 to watch thanks
Mark Raynor (1 year ago)
We wished it was three Wallace and two Earnhardt brothers in this race instead of Kevin Lepage. Poor Kerry he had an opportunity to race in twice but Kenny Wallace snatched the first transfer spot in the first duel as in the second duel Lepage really took it away from him. What do everyone else think?

@Jesse Mullen jr switched because Teresa wouldn't sign the company over to dale sr kids not jr fault at all
Jesse Mullen (7 months ago)
That was partially Jr's fault with the team switch.
Dale Reynolds (2 years ago)
Not just because I'm a Gordon fan but this is probably my favorite 500 finish. You had most or all of the big names right there at the finish. Stewart, Gordon, Jr, Kurt Busch, Johnson, Wallace... Throw in Scott Riggs and a few other good names all fighting for the win.
shawn bishop (2 years ago)
Another race that Dale Jr. should have won. He has several races while his entire time with Hendrick Motorsports that he should have won. Don't talk to me about that 2011 Coke 600 finish.

1:41:08 omg that noise is part of my childhood
Joey Klecka (2 years ago)
It's amazing just how similar the restart crash at 3:17:00 is to the one in the 2002 Daytona 500. Late race restart, couple guys go spinning, and not only that, but Jeff Gordon was the race leader in both instances!
Joey Klecka (2 years ago)
Sorry I take that back. Gordon was not the leader in this race on the lap 189 restart. But he was in 2002.

Longing for the days like these. I remember watching this whole race, start-to-finish, while in 1st grade. I don't care that the Chase was around back then, things were just better.

Good times.
Nick Doneilo (2 years ago)
I absolutely love Larry McReynolds. Incredible enthusiasm calling a race, nothing against Jeff Gordon who replaced his position, but I don't think he can compare to Larry's excitement.

In the debate as to 'What Daytona 500 was the greatest', I'm amazed that this race dosen't show up more often. The closing quarter alone was a virtual name of the 'who is who' of great drivers from the 90's and 2000's. Stewart, Johnson, Martin, Wallace, Marlin, Dale Jr, Kurt Busch. Even Carl Edwards made a show toward the front end of the field in the closing laps. The moves executed at the front of the field were amazing, and expertly executed. In some ways, it was reminiscent of the whole 'Dale Sr vs Everyone' in 1996 and 1993, but with smarter and stronger drivers.
Chris Bateman (1 month ago)
@Falling Pictures Productions Talladega 200 17th to 1st in only 4 laps nobody is as strong or smart as the legend the face of Nascar Dale earnhardt
Falling Pictures Productions (2 years ago)
Dale Earndhart was unable to deliver a Daytona 500 win, the crown jewel of this track and all of NASCAR, in 22 out of 23 attempts, and even excusing his 1990 failure, that's a whopping 21 failures when he need to be clutch the most. Only Darrel Waltrip and David Pearon come close to having such poor stats, but Waltrip had the sad tale of running a large stint of his last years in uncompetitive equipment and rapidly declining talent (all after his 500 win), and David Pearson was running against consistently stronger drivers in the 500, at a much more mechanically atrophic time, then Dale Sr did. Hell, even in 1990 and 1998, Dale Sr needed the race to be virtually handed to him. I'm not saying that Dale Sr was bad at Daytona. He has the most wins at the track for a reason. But when it came to the 500 itself, all his skill seemed to dribble away when he needed it the most.
Nick Doneilo (2 years ago)
I was agreeing with all of your statements until I got to the very last few words. I don't know as if there is or ever will be a driver any stronger and smarter than Dale Earnhardt, especially at this track, Daytona. That is a pretty big insult, in my opinion.

I love how the announcers were all praising Jr and they missed Gordon's winning pass lol

CORF (3 years ago)
Still find it hilarious that the announcers made such a big deal out of Jr's late race pass for the lead, but barely even mentioned Jeff's race winning move lol "Oh look, Gordon made a pass!" *Continues to talk about how great Jr is for 5 minutes Only time I ever disliked DWs commentary
Nolan Cain (4 days ago)
That’s because they were focused on Kahne hitting the wall.

timing of the caution flag?

How were there 11 cars involved in that wreck on Lap 182? It looked more like 9 cars.
Tobi Ojo (4 years ago)
NASCAR should not have thrown the caution flag with three laps to go in the 2005 Daytona 500.

I remember at the end, tony and jimmie were fighting. Anyone else remember?
Evan Williams (4 years ago)
@craig talhelm I recall Johnson and Stewart beating around a little bit after the checkers, Tony just could not stay ahead of everybody at the end, he had no help to stay up there.
Bad Booking (4 years ago)
Racing disagreement. The two touched and it cost Stewart a few spots.
Evan Williams (4 years ago)
This was a fine graduation present, I was to graduate high school that spring and to have Jeff Gordon win this race was the thrill of a lifetime. The only win at Daytona for Jeff Gordon in the flames. But I loved Fox's graphics package and segments at that time, it boggles me why they never kept these graphics.

Thank you so much man!! I wanted this race in full version and now I feel rejuvenated
Chris Kreager (4 years ago)
The most aesthetically pleasing Daytona 500. Cars never looked better, FOX graphics were their best- and it was also unique, for it was the only Great American Race where Dodge Chargers raced Ford Tauruses.
Jack Napier (1 month ago)
I feel the 00- 04 cars looked the best. Especially with the aero package they used in late 00 at Talladega and throughout 01 for all of the plate races. The cars actually had similar shapes that looked like the street cars. These have those big (bumpers) on the front and they kind of look like a reversed snow plow.
Mike Boyle (6 months ago)
the only thing wrong with it is how dirty the Daytona logo looks on the front stretch
