Can't the police besiege an embassy, though? Eventually, the diplomats will run out of food and will be forced to leave the building.

I had just decided to publicly comment on a video for the first time in years when I found that you even have references. This is my first viewing of one of your videos. This is easily in the very highest tier of short videos in the pop-continuing-education space. Also, when are we going to see some prestigious Emmy- or Oscar-level YouTube video awards? I nominate this video!

Very interesting video. When I was in college I considered going into the foreign service with an intention of being stationed overseas for most of my career. Little did I know then how totally wrong I was for that job. So glad I wound up taking a different direction. I would never have done well working for the government. Too independent. Also wouldn't have been good at all the pomp and circumstance of diplomacy. Too blunt and annoyed by artifice.

The US does not use its embassies for the purpose they are there for. Look at Iraq, now about 12000 employees...But how many US citizens are there? Embassies are for representation of the nation and for the host country to lodge compaints or to lets say pass message son to the official government of that embassy. Yes for the citizens of the country in that foreign land also. But for example, the case of Iraq, it is clear thet the US embassy is being used for spying and for tactical and warfare purposes. You would have to be an idiot to not see this. With the tensions created by the US against Iran and North Korea it makes sense. And they have CIA operattives housed there to conduct their missions and surveliamnce. The US is not an honest borker and has never been. The sooner people realise this in those weak countries and form other alliances the better. But as long as the money the US provides corrpupt officials and government is enough for them, then things wont change...But we need change...

9:24 i really like your videos but i have to strongly disagree. war is NOT "big business". at least not for a country. the only people who make big money off of war are companies like Heckler & Koch. Countries ALWAYS lose money on war which is why no counrty (as far as i know) is engaged in an active war.

Nice complete lack of human feelings when you said "war is money" there, dude. No wonder the whole world is in this deep shit. People think they're smarter for not getting "emotional" about "stuff that happens", even when the "stuff" that happens is genocide so a few rich people can get richer. If you're not one of those rich people, and I bet you're not, you ain't that smart, buddy. Nice video about embassies, but would it kill you to show some criticism of the fact that soul-sucking companies are all cowering up together in the Green Zone in Baghdad, bathing in heated swimming pools, while the local population is living in a war-torn hell-hole? No? I didn't think you would.

I used to live in DC (home in L. A. now) it was totally normal to hear stories or diplomats kids getting out of trouble, even a famous case of a drunk driving incident an American was killed in. That was in the late 90’s but the embassies were super bitchen.

It is wrong what you saying about the embassy. If you were clever enough you may think if the police of the country have the right to raid then they WOULD DO and won't wait decades. Even crime happens as you mentioned in the story NO ONE gets arrested because the embassador's government does not give permission for investigation. Well, the rights you have red are explained how europe wants to serve for its own purpose.

Angel33Demon666 (2 months ago)
What about the difference between a consulate and an embassy though?
martin theiss (2 months ago)
consulates are local adjunct embassies for persons who would have the better ability to go there than your embassy in the capital city. staffed by a mix of local and foreign staff personnel they serve as the front line of most contact with foreigners. You wont get to see the consul general or the ambassador unless they are there for an official function to be seen as the local representative of your government at the event. Generally consulates are near the cities of large numbers of your home citizens or major trade contacts.
Dominic Fastbender (2 months ago)
This doesnt actually function in practice. Take Egypt as a perfect example. They have absolutely no respect for the geneva conventions whatsoever. They always review diplomatic pouches. They overtly spy on embassies. They are even trying to get embassies to move to a place created to contain them with surveillance built in. Because it is an Islamic dictatorship opressing their own people and they obviously dont want 110 million people getting ideas that maybe their lives are not great whereas, their ruling elite are living a gilded existence.. which makes Islam a perfect tool.

@martin theiss Bulgaria is part of the EU! Bulgaria is a proper EU country! Swallow it and move on! It is safe and much better organized and functioning in some regards than other members even! Bulgaria has lost 23% of its population in the last 20 years; Turkey and Russia are meddling and trying to own it and it is still better working than Greece or south Italy, for instance! How would your country sustain itself under such attacks?! I thought so! Sheeesh, proper is definitely not how you were educated on the topic!
martin theiss (2 months ago)
not so highly dangerous but still not considered EU proper when it comes to security and health risk.
Luis Lopes (2 months ago)
About the Ponta Delgada : It`s a Consulate, not an embassy (if there is any difference). The actual embassy stays at portuguese capital: Lisbon. And why it`s so important? US still has a military base in Lages since 2nd world war. Look around and see if you can find a more straight path to europe departing from USA :P
martin theiss (2 months ago)
PD has a chief of consulate, close enough to an ambassador, but they report to the Lisbon ambassador administratively and functions as a post people can go to if Lisbon is not as practical for most services. Oddly enough the only USA Portuguese consul and consul general outside of Lisbon.

You should also tell your visitors that nearly all US embassies also host the NSA and other secret services. In Germany, they are located on the top floor of the building. It looks like a fortress and totally makes a mess out of the Brandenburg Gate Ensemble. In 2013, they intercepted Merkel's phone. Security is not an excuse to behave like a conqueror. There was a time, when both countries behaved like friends, and we realy should work on that again. But the intelligence of the current ambassador is rated 0,3 on the Trump scale (a sloth is rated 3,5).
J Blank (2 months ago)
Says no firefighters are allowed to get to the embassy, also says the embassy has a FIRE STATION in it
martin theiss (2 months ago)
not entirely true. The head of station or the chief of the watch has the primary responsibility of safety. when local police fire or medical are needed they will be allowed in. The guy only said the embassy senior staff enjoy the privilege of demanding everyone out to preserve the sense it is your national office and territory.
