Tentsile tree tents: floating treehouses mimic spider webs

14255 ratings | 2821268 views
Treehouse architect Alex Shirley-Smith wanted to create a portable treehouse, a kind of ready-made, floating shelter that could be assembled in any backyard, wood or even city streets. In 2010 Shirley-Smith released several tree tent prototypes inspired by spiders' webs. "A spider always uses three anchoring points and the web finds its own position in space that's a circle in between any of those 3 points. So as long as you've got 3 anchoring points this tent will find its own central position to create its own shape inside that triangle. The whole thing is sort of taken from spider's web technology or you know, what exists in nature. Biomicmicry." After refining 11 prototypes, Shirley-Smith and partner Kirk Kirchev finally released a production model tree tent- the Tentsile Stingray. Using just 3 tree straps, 2 poles and one fly sheet, the Stingray will shelter up to 4 people in mid-air. It takes about 10 minutes to set-up and a few minutes to take down. And best of all, it is one size fits all. The tent can be used as a camping alternative- to keep you comfortably suspended above any animals, bugs or uncomfortable rocks-, but the design could also prove the basis for a new type of eco-village. Kirchev dreams of one day creating a community of (much larger) tensile structures where portable villages could be mounted and disassembled in a day, leaving little impact on the forest floor. Best part shall be when you open the exit door and peer down, you see 5-6 bears camping beneath your tent, patiently waiting for you to come down.

Easy to pee yeahh

You need thick strong trees but it looks great and very comfy in a good environment, since the world is getting dodgy it is not for me as it is too noticeable, there must be a way to get up in the trees or tree that is safe and stealth?
Robert Grosser (25 days ago)
Why has everything got to involve sex? Seriously, some people need their dicks cutting off at the base.

Wouldn't want to be the user with the first structural recall...

Put spurs on so you can climb up and put it higher!

Sorry to have to point out but there a loads of flaws in the design. The first being the faff of putting it up. Needing strong trees and carrying heavy tension straps and ratchets. There was a mention of testing it with a lamppost. This is not possible. I did some math. Assuming the tent is flat and equally tensioned on all sides. 4 people of average weight would exert a force on the straps of 2000kg each strap. For a large tree this is ok. However underestimating the force could be deadly. The higher up you put the tent the greater force applied to the root. If the tree is dead or dying you wont see morning. A hammock design even with 4 males of average size would only exert a force of about 668kg per strap. It is also very expensive. Why not just get a good quality Hilleberg tent with a lifetime guarantee and save money, lighter, hassle of erecting, cost, safer. Not to mention the unbeatable warranty. The strap configuration also reduces your camp area. Sorry dude but good idea, wrong application. Perhaps controlled, fixed rented accommodation tents or similar, like airbnb may be better.

This makes so much sense really like the idea.

Wild camping should come naturally to you for you to enjoy all it has to offer. This looks like a lot of hard work you don't need .like the concept but just to much

So good

Go camping watch your kids break there bones fallen out or decapitate yourself. If your getting cold and wet in a hammock your not as smart as your making out! And at that price I’d rather buy several DD. hammocking systems.

Can you trust the material not to rip? At height and when people are sleeping, a sudden rip would mean everyone falls out in their sleeping bag? Bad injuries could occur? Also people can cook in a tent but can't see it happening in this?
Amigo dawn (2 months ago)
The weak points will be the seams wear the ropes tighten from. Will have to be super strong stitching.
ItsCizza (2 months ago)
I see a flaw in this design. condensr is going to build up in this and you will wake up with wet walls. Make a bug proof net interior followed by a external covering u can clip onto over the tent. There is nothing worse then waking up in a tent that's wet on the inside walls.

if the person sleeping in the center of it is too fat. other people will tend to "gravitate" in his/her direction

There is is a 3D printed plastic structure that can be constructed that will roll up when bent in one direction and unrolled and bent in the other direction and it becomes a ridged surface. Be a great addition to those tents. Hang the tent insert floor roll out for a firm surface. 😁👍

Like the idea, but too many dissadvantages to it at the moment? Too many scumbags around in society now if you get my meaning?..To be higher you would have to carry a ladder around with you. Ok for peoples gardens and those lucky enough to have large trees in their gardens!!

"tent architect" means what? he knows how to sew? it"s a temporary job?
Geo H (5 months ago)
he lost me at about 3:10 lol hope this isn't your real job btw : A common misconception is that grizzly bears, unlike black bears, cannot climb trees. While its long claws make climbing more difficult for a grizzly than for a blackbear, a grizzly can get to you in a tree – it will more likely, however, be able to reach you before you reach the tree. but then he is british and knows nothing about bears or tents

Spider tents

That's not a tent it's a bear burrito.
kenalpha3 (6 months ago)
8:42 it should have pouches hanging off the edge or center, to hold your shoes. Bad idea to leave shoes on the ground with dangerous things that can crawl in. It should also have hooks on the 3 main straps, to hold backpacks off the ground.

junk..!! the angel of the trees makes a hug factor.. ur fkd if u cant find trees with the right angel
MIchael C (6 months ago)
great for bear country. bears reach up 10ft..need climbing gear to get high set up.

What about stretching over time and long term use? Like a hammock all fabrics will stretch over time. There would also have to be a weight restriction on them. Other than that, there's a lot of potential in these tents.
John Sunderland (7 months ago)
Looks interesting. Need insulation under your sleeping bag no doubt.
richard hyser (7 months ago)
If you get 1inch tubular nylon and figure 8 knots run between trees you adjust the anchor points. the sky is the limit. love this.
syarizan sulaiman (7 months ago)
Is like having hammoc and tarp together
LJaysPerspective (7 months ago)
These tree tents do appear almost aerodynamic in form even though they technically arent moving. They have a cool factor but i do like the fact that they are off the ground. However unlike the typical tent that is anchored to the ground. You cannot cook in these...thats a down side. Its too jumpy. You can cook and set up a type of stove on a tent pegged to the ground, with this type of tent ur limited so the cool factor is not a sufficient reason to purchase this item. IMO

8:32 Maybe you should have that tent higher in the air, passerbys could be tempted to grab some butt.

Hopefully, nobody in your party ends up with camp gas...which is usually worse that your farts at home due to abnormal food and diet, because it doesn’t look like there is much ventilation.
