Even though Britain gave Hong Kong back to China 21 years ago, today when you walk around the city you can see British fingerprints everywhere. From statues of Queen Victoria to double decker buses, British culture and lifestyle is baked into the culture at every turn.
Both the history and the current-day British influence are visually fascinating stories and in this episode I show it all -- exploring Britain’s imperial history, which includes opioid trade, discrimination and a divided city, and then showing the effects of that history, resulting in a city that is unlike any I’ve visited.

HK can regain their system "1 country 2 system", but I think from now on they succeed or not they will be more controlled and effected by mainland China. The fact that they are not an independent country and must be under control of China is true.
Michael Velasquez (6 days ago)
“I’m in China” No you are not and that is the biggest misconception about Hong Kong.
Goldenblitzer (6 days ago)
I think you’ll find that they only made opium illegal once they found that it was being imported. And there were multiple, so maybe do some fact checking before you put out.

As a Chinese, I am feeling so sad and heartbreaking to watch such kind of colonization and "foreign DNA integration " history again in a video. Any strong country could just conquer another one and change their nature and culture in this way...

@Darren Chan Infrastructure, modern technology and transport, the justice system, law and order. Management, book keeping, accounts, capitalism, trade, business, protection, safety, freedoms, knowledge and education.
These are all features of a civilised society. Britain became civilised, with thanks to her history and geography. When Britain became the most powerful nation in world, she "shared" that power by colonisation.

As far as I knew Hong Kong’s main Island was ceded completely to the British only Kowloon was leased for 99 years. When the 99 years were up the ccp gave the UK an ultimatum for lack of a better word to give all of it back, and all the UK could do was secure a few decades of lessened restrictions on its former subjects.

What this white man does not clearly say is that Hong Kong Chinese have been socially engineered culturally to hate being Chinese and assume a faux Cauc-Asian identity and personality. Hong Kong Chinese wear the white man's names, worships the white man's gods, and venerates his culture especially language. The Hong Kong people hate their Chinese selves, hence their opposition to the Chinese Motherland. Americs and Britain are exploiting this Hong Kong Chinese schizophrenia to maintain their banking hegemony in Hong Kong and Trojan Horse position in China.

Tea to the British Empire is like the Internet to us. Of course, tea is tangible, while the latter is not, but the point is that both are considered cultural necessities. The more we value something, the more we're willing to pay for it. That is the heart of demand in economics.

How did Britain form the identity of the Hongkongers?
Primaski (14 days ago)
China *did* promise 50 years of self-autonomy following the tradeover. The minimum China should allow to a region that is taxed so heavily, is to allow them to do what they want. The UK and US aren't arriving in gunboats telling China what to do. The people of Hong Kong WANT to be self-administrating and not have Beijing interfere in their affairs. Hong Kong has their own identity now. Why the Chinese are so quick to ignore the desires of the people to integrate them into the rest of their society is very disheartening for me.

@William Abbott it's not gonna be fully part of China until 2047 I think and they still have many of their rights. There's a huge riot in Hong Kong right now against the Chinese government and when I say huge I mean bigger than a million people storming Area 51 so I don't know what will happen in the future for Hong Kong at this point. I'm from London and I really want Hong Kong to be an independent state with a good relationship with the UK and I fully support their protests. Right now, its trade deals are gone and I think that it shouldn't be like that. Hong Kongers, I'm with you all the way

TheKingArchon (18 days ago)
Correction Hong Kong was given in perpetuity not 99 years, if that was the case then Hong Kong would of been returned in 1940, not 1997. It was the rest of the territory that was leased for 99 years in 1898. But when it came to 1997 Britain realised that it could do nothing to stop China from taking the whole of Hong Kong so they decided to return it under "One country, Two Systems". Other than that, good video, rather enjoyed !

Thanks for reading.

To be precise, Hong Kong Island itself was ceded by China to Britain "in perpetuity" (forever) whereas the other parts that make up the bulk of the territory (the New Territories and outlying islands) were leased to the UK for 99 years. In theory therefore Britain had the legal right to retain HK island but took the pragmatic view that there was little point clinging on to the island if all other parts of the colony were to be handed back. This informed the negotiations with China which resulted in Margaret Thatcher signing the Joint Declaration in 1984 ahead of the handover to China in 1997.
Today's upheavals stem from the view amongst many in HK that China has reneged on its commitments to preserve the freedoms of HK citizens enshrined in that declaration.
Không Không (23 days ago)

knorpel26 (24 days ago)
There is something in the video that is not correct: Hong Kong island was indeed ceded in perpeuity, not for 99 years and the New Territories were indeed "leased" for 99 years.
