In addition to adding bear-proof trash cans, the burgeoning town has also replaced attractants like fruit trees, built wildlife crossings over highways, and provided education to the local populace. Their creative solutions have helped to manage local wildlife while keeping residents and visitors safe to enjoy the beautiful scenery the area has to offer.
See this problem-solving town take action in this short film by Leanne Allison and Front Range Films.

People and Bears Live in Harmony in This Wildlife-Friendly Town | Short Film Showcase
Canada's Bow Valley draws over 4 million visitors every year to its wildlife-friendly town. How do you think other places in the world can achieve this level of coexistence between people and animals?

HELPING SOMEWHAT BUT THE SOLUTIONS ARE NOT PERFECT, THERE'S MORE TO IT, NEEDS LOTS MORE LOVE FOR THE BEARS.
Merry Chase (10 hours ago)
I feel this is a lie because surely people get along with wildlife everywhere except cases where they get eaten. This place is no different from any other places with bears. You are never going to have a purely harmonious relationship because bears like to eat meat and we look like salmon.

I had a dream last night where I was gonna go for a bike ride and there were bears walking around and I opened my garage door, there was a bear, but it didn’t attack me instead it became my pet and it was wild I named him charlie and I pet him multiple times I thought he was gonna scratch me when I saw him for the first time but he put him paw on me, held me down, and he almost died because there was a shooter he lived a happy fifteen years but I died of cancer in my dream
Jeremy Harris (26 days ago)
Stop feeding them for a couple generations and see what happens. Or how about a nice stroll at midnight, like I do every evening in my neighborhood?? You’re completely ignorant if you think we can “co-exist” with all the predatory species shown here. This was a story by journalists and Art/Film majors; DEFINITELY not scientists.. just in case anyone was thinking this was an educational piece rather than just a piece of journalism.
Everybody: Do NOT try and coexist. Think I’m wrong? ..set up a hut in the Serengeti. One of the species should leave, whether forced or willing.

i love bears and i think its richt to like protect both sides and not only humans.

NG you should've selected a different title because people can't exist ANYWHERE on this Earth in harmony. If it this were the case our planet wouldn't be dying.

How stupid. Kill your apple trees instead of shooting the bears. Fruit trees in forests are very rare. If you see an apple tree odds are a human planted it. Good thing people aren't hungry in Canada.
Fergutor (1 month ago)
If you see the video you notice there is a problem with the amount of people entering wildlife spaces and disturbing it. And that number is increasing. They're saying it clearly and explicitly.
So I guess everybody here oppose the globalist plan to artificially increase Canadian population to 100 million by 2100, given the impact it will have on wildlife, right?

Being born and raised in Canmore, I feel like they could do a lot more with the wildlife conservation. Forget the money town counsel, stop expanding and granting people more and more room to build and destroy our once small little mountain town.

I stayed in Calgary Canada for a month on vacation and I remember seeing those wonderful bridges they had made for the animals to cross over to the other side. Never saw one like that here in America. We need to take better care of the animals and the planet before we destroy it all..

Of course, this in an intelligent country: Canada. In stupid America, all the arrogant, macho gun-nuts would just be slaughtering bears right, left, and center! America has the attitude of “people first, last, and only” and we will eventually pay the price for that attitude.
Gavin Stoodge (4 months ago)
I really wish they made areas for the deer and coyotes to cross where I live. They built a toll road through the middle of the hills and it completely killed off the entire deer population. I used to always see deer when I was younger, but now I haven’t seen one in years.
Dave Wave (4 months ago)
It is a shame about the loss of wild habitat but I'm glad they took an approach that considers the needs of the animals that have lived there long before humans arrived. It is probably safer to share space in this manner with large carnivores than to live in some cities.

Yew animal loving hippies! Yew could just get a hunter to go in there and pop all those savage beasts so those innocent folks won't be hassled by them no more. Y'all are creating a Communist super state where people can't go for walks at night, are limited to the trails of the hippie's choosing, and can't even run down a few critters in their pickup no more. <--(Sarcasm) Seriously though, good going Canada's Bow Valley.
Canis Amator (5 months ago)
We need to change the mindset of people who live in cities/ busy urban areas too because wildlife is inhabiting those areas already. Their #1 killer is cars. Imagine how scary it would be to wake up and everything familiar no longer exists and in order to eat you must navigate a busy highway. Love what you people are doing.

FYI Bears don't live in harmony with you. They do whatever they want and don't have any intuition or what we call a "conscious" they operate purely on instinct and see you as either a food source, threat, or non threatening. This is misleading and if you teach kids that bears are sweet and cuddly you should be fined and sent to a gulag.

I like this a lot, more places should implement these safety fences. It won't only save animals but human lives as well.

I believe any towns or cities that are located in these types of areas should have seminars in their city to educate people on all wildlife in their city to protect them as well as the animals! one of the worse things that people can do is feeding the animals, that's all wild animals! that can get people killed! here is something a lot of people don't know is when someone feeds a bear and it for whatever reason kills someone then they have to hunt that beardown and put it down, that is unacceptable period! these bears and all the other wild animals are only doing what they have been taught to do to survive especially when it comes to food, in other words, it is not their fault and they don't deserve to get the death penalty for doing what is natural to them!

Oh look! A valley in the middle of a forest, which is prime animal habitat!, let's destroy it and build a town there! Stupid people.
