Cow asks man to rescue her newborn calf

67151 ratings | 5250009 views
Flo is a cow who lives on a beautiful farm near Millbrook, Ontario. She spends her days in a lush, green pasture that borders on a country road. The cows have access to a nice pond for drinking and for cooling off in. She shares this pasture with a herd of cows and some newborn calves. Flo delivered a calf herself but it was born on a slope between the pond and the fence. It slid down and under the fence, becoming trapped outside the field. It's not clear how long the calf was lying there, but the fresh umbilical cord showed that it had been born that day. It was also dry, which suggested that it had been lying in the sun for a little while. The calf may have tried to get back to its mother but the electric fence made this impossible. Dave was passing by on the road when he saw the cows enjoying a dip in the pond to get out of the heat. He stopped to video tape the cows as they did so. He noticed a cow to his left that was acting agitated. Dave doesn't know a lot about cows but he knew it was unusual for a female to scrape the dirt and make so much noise. He set his camera on the fence post and watched, confused by what was going on. He could see that her ear tag said "Flo". He eventually noticed that she was looking through the fence and then back at him. She seemed a little frantic as she mooed and he walked closer with his camera to see what she was doing. It became obvious that she had been asking for help. Dave saw her newborn calf in the long grass but he wasn't sure if her behavior had been a cry for help or a warning to stay away from her baby. The calf needed to get milk from the mother and he could also wander out on the road if something wasn't done. There was no gate nearby and Dave didn't want to try moving the calf far away from Flo. Dave decided that the best way to help was to lift the wires and pushh the calf under the fence. The calf seemed to tired to help and there was no way to avoid contact with the fence. Flo seemed to understand that her calf was being moved toward her, but Dave was very aware that only a flimsy fence would be between them if she became upset with what was happening. Dave was getting shocked and the calf was too. He hoped it would not cry out in pain before he could get the job done. Eventually, the calf was on the other side of the fence and reunited with his mom. The two immediately sniffed each other and began walking out into the pasture together. Dave spoke with the farmer and his wife, who did not realize that she had calved. They invited Dave to join them as they tagged the calf's ear and treated the umbilical cord with iodine. They checked the calf and found that it was healthy and unharmed. Dave took his camera along and filmed the two as they mingled with the herd. The calf wandered up to Dave for a curious sniff, as did Flo, seemingly recognizing him. They both wandered off and Flo's little calf was soon happily nursing as if nothing had happened. Although Dave was slow to catch on, Flo was obviously distressed and was aware that Dave could help her. She looked at him expectantly as she paced between him and her baby in a very clear attempt to communicate. We often underestimate an animal's intelligence and capacity for emotion. Flo showed a healthy amount of both in this case. You can't deny the love she felt for her newborn calf. I have had this exact experience many times. Calves need rescue from this or that several times per year, sometimes only minutes from dying

Rescued for a veal crate.  Rescued for slaughter.  Rescued so the mother can panic when they drag the calf away.  She probably wanted Dave to take her calf which she birthed in secret because she probably had 10 before that ripped from her.  The dairy industry is cruel beyond belief.
WildCreatures (5 days ago)
JillM1000 You didn’t read the narrative and you’re completely wrong. It’s a beef farm, and they refuse to raise veal. Aside from the inevitable slaughter, the life they lead is ideal. The whole point of this video is that cows and all animals deserve better treatment. People can go vegan, or they can buy from ethical farmers like this one. Anything at all is better than buying from factory farms.

That calf is going to be killed, like calves do, to get the milk, when the cow is spent for constantly being become pregnant, she will be killed, too. Don't get me wrong, you did the right thing, but all the pastoral, idyllic looking videos can't mask the abhorrent barbarity that meat industry is. So the cows have a nice pasture, a beautiful pond, etc, etc. Film a slaughterhouse (if you can) to show what "humane harvesting of protein" looks like. And yes, when cows are there (and sheep, and horses, and pigs and animals in a fur farm) they know perfectly well what's going on, they smell the blood, they hear the screams, that is what should be shown. Don't hide it behind "cute", show it. Take junior and little princess to see it, too.

should've saved that calf from the veal industry or becoming just like Mom, impregnated continuously for milk, yearning for stolen babies, murdered when her body is "unproductive". Vegan or Ital💚

Linda Sheperd (17 days ago)
Thank you for helping this precious bovine family. Aren't they beautiful! I hope the calf isn't taken from it's mom for a few months at least! It's nice to see the cows out on pasture! I don't consume meat or dairy anymore because of the unbelievable inhumane and barbaric practices carried on in the factory farms!!! Example: cutting off piglets tails with huge scissors, no anesthetics or pain killers whatsoever while the baby is screaming and in the throes of agony from excruciating pain! Or: taking a baby pig, which is small enough to fit in your hand, and holding it upside down by a back leg while it's genitals are savagely ripped from it's body by hand and of course the entrails attached still have to be pulled out which causes further unbelievable torture!!! The tiny helpless animal is screaming and flailing it's little body in agony and I wonder what kind of creature is inflicting this evil treatment in the name of greed or What!!!!! I have not eaten pork for several years since I first learned it contained mercury.

Couldn't Dave have gotten the electric in the fence turned off before transferring the calf to the correct side? Would it have killed him to take a few minutes, find the farmer or the farm workers, and get the power to the fence turned off? Just asking.

People can realize that animals care so much about their children, they feel pain and suffering and yet we eat them every day, 3 times a day. What the fuck is wrong with this society?

so much caring for the animals here but he will go and have a beef stake for lunch. what a hypocrisy this is.

shawnriv9 (25 days ago)
Cows are amazing, and their intelligence level to ask and appreciate help is incredible. Most importantly, the connection the mother and calf have. It's very, very sad that humans purchase dairy products. By doing so, dairy farmers separate a newly born calf from it's mother within minutes. The mother cows never get to experience feeding and connecting with their babies and instead the milk is used for human consumption. It's disgusting.

You animal loving vegetarian ediots. Cows don't have big enough brains to think that way. The cow was just looking at him because because she thought the guy was a potential threat. What do think the cow was pawing the ground for?!? She was trying to ward him off. The calf didn't remember or appreciate anything. It was just getting a feel for it's surroundings.
