Over the past few years, some people have taken drones from small almost toy devices for carrying cameras to mini aircraft that are capable carrying a single person.

The Ehang 184 created a huge buzz when it was debuted at CES 2016. They claim it is the world's first fully autonomous helicopter drone.
The Ehang 184 is a 200Kg, eight-rotor aircraft which the company claims it is able to lift a single 100kg person, up 500 metres into the air and fly them at up to 100Kmph to any point on Google Maps, avoiding objects automatically and safely handling take-off and landing all without the need for any piloting skills from the person being carried.
The range is as far as it could fly with the 23 minutes of flight time afforded by the batteries which a recharge time of 2 hours.
Ehang is keen to point out that in the event of the drone experiencing problems, human pilots housed in a custom built "command centres" will be able to take over and guide you to safety.

For these to become truly world-changing we're gonna need better batteries than we have currently (no pun intended). Lighter & with a greater charge capacity. It'll come though.

Drone Driving License? . . . or are they too unstable to trust a person to drive?
Johnathan Stephenson (1 month ago)
hate to tell you but if it's got a pilot it's an ultra light aircraft not a drone
also illegal in the USA if you're not a licensed pilot taking off from a runway with TSA air clearance
literally the law says that if it leaves the ground under its own power then its an aircraft
this is why we don't have flying cars

so the first drone cost 100k and can fly 25 min and 100km/h thats 1.6km/m witch is 40 km in 25 min ? thats pritty fast but 40km or 24miles. thats not werry far.

rbaleksandar (4 months ago)
As if having a parachute at 500m will help when that drone leaves your ass in mid-air...According to the US Parachute Association you get a minimum altitude of 2000ft (approx. 61t0m) for experienced sky divers, 2500ft (approx. 760m) for less experienced sky divers and 5500ft (approx. 1.7km) for training jumps).

Perhaps I could use my soon to be made ebike for a delivery service?
There would be no fuel, as heat is its only necessity, and the sun can
supply that, and on days with no sun, then alternate heat sources could
be used, burning sticks, propane, and the like. The idea I have for a
fun e-bike that will propel me across the country will hopefully be
achieved soon :-) Calculations show that one idea of the project shows
that 180 thermoelectric chips are needed to produce 36 volts at 10 amps.
if faster getting about is desirable, then calculations show that if I
choose a higher voltage hub motor, that 48 volts at 10 amps can be
achieved if I use 240 thermo electric chips, that it should produce 48
volts at 10 amps
If still faster motors are desirable, a if I choose a 72 volt power
source for a 72v hub motor, then let's see... 360 thermo electric chips
would produce a steady 72 volts at 10 amps - this really is getting
exciting! I see ebay has the availability of hot water pumps with low 12
and 24 volt requirements available for a small price too.
If only I had enough power from the chips to take this project to the
skies. Wonder how much voltage and current would be needed to make a
flying drone large enough to carry me about? Would be so nice to just
float about, and not have to worry about the occasional chuck hole and
the like on the ground. Think how much more comfy it would be gliding on
a cushion of air - if only - wonder how to calculate how much is
needed? I know, i will see how the ones who made them did it. the power
source they used can be used as an estimate of what I'd need with drone
motors their size, what ever size that is. Lets see what google says
about how they went about making those drones that can fly people -
youtube shows that there are several versions of ride on drones. I
wonder if someone will think of designing one with tilt motors, that
way, when altitude is reached, a tilt of the propellers, or are they
called rotors? well, if they were tilt-able forward, that might make the

The Ehang 184 looks stunning. Some great work on the Quadro UAS, Aero-X and the design on the Flike drone is impressive. I just don't know what to think on the Volocopter. Safety is vital and the Volocopter has plenty redundancy.
The sound must be pretty impressive on these.

I thought drone batteries suck with capacity, so I tried to
be creative replacing drone batteries with same voltage but with much higher
mAh. To my understanding mAh is nothing but just the capacity. For unknown
reason, the test batteries don’t work. They make the drone spin but never
generate enough power to take off and quickly run out of power. To my
understanding 6000 mAh is supposed to last at least 7 times longer than 750mAh
regular drone battery.
This is regular drone battery:
This is my creative researched battery to do the trick:
Someone please enlighten me.

Dino Alberini (7 months ago)
Mika Kuusela I meant certified as something you can fly in a controlled airspace.
Mika Kuusela (7 months ago)
Mythbusters tried to create their own jetpack. They got it certified, and found out that small enough contraption and it gets classified Ultra Light, which means it doesn't need to be certified neither requires it a pilots licence.
Dino Alberini (8 months ago)
gary63693 it's a provisional certificate. That's because you can not land it safely in case of power loss. Like a helicopter. Or a fixed wing airplane. Or a gyrocopter. Or anything with a permanent certificate. And no, the ballistic parachute doesn't count.

Jim Barron (8 months ago)
They should name this class the "Deathwish Drones"
People (and the aircraft) in fixed wing aircraft can survive most technical problems with result in an "unplanned landing". With a quad, once you're a short distance above the ground your chances of surviving a crash landing would be very poor. You'd at the very least have to hold a gun on me to get me to fly in a quadcopter, and it it was an automated one I'd have be be sure you were a very good aim before even that could get me in.
Flying with airlines is as safe as it is only because each carries so many passengers - which has led to a truly extraordinary culture and technology of safety. Single passenger is inherently far more unsafe - much higher cost of maintenance per passenger mile (so far more pressure to cut costs in the wrong ways, no human pilot on board if the technology fails etc.
If it's 10 miles or less, I'd rather walk (even taking a heavy load) than fly a single passenger drone. More and I'd find some alternative transportation.

One motor fails at altitude ..........................your fucked ! I understand that this is in the beginning stages , but still .
BiggityBoggityBoo (5 months ago)
Owen Parsons I think helicopter safety speaks for itself. The rotors don't break they are ridiculously strong. Then as above mentioned if the engine fails you can 'glide' down like a syccamore seed.
I doubt drones can do the glide thing but most have lots of motors for redundancy incase of failure.
Still these things are very reliable, the motors have no brushes and their only failure modes are melted windings (unlikely to ever happen) or bearing failure. Bearings are pretty reliable things on the whole.
The power supplies for these systems are multi-cell li-ion battery packs. If one cell fails the entire thing doesn't stop, it's like nothing happened at least in safety orientated applications.
With regards to the fully autonomous computer systems, being used to maintain stable flight and handle where you want to go...the military have been using similar systems in their high performance jets for years, where reliability is pretty much their top priority. Same with satellite systems and auto pilot in modern passenger aircraft.
I have to admit it'd be quite disconcerting to actually fly somewhere in one, but given the redudency that'll be built into these things, it'd actually be safer than going by car.
Owen Parsons (7 months ago)
