5 Super Sized Drones You Can Ride - 2016 - Piloted drone

5586 ratings | 1252674 views
Over the past few years, some people have taken drones from small almost toy devices for carrying a cameras to mini aircraft that are capable carrying a single person. http://curious-droid.com/bfah EHang 184 The Ehang 184 created a huge buzz when it was debuted at CES 2016. They claim it is the world's first fully autonomous helicopter drone. The Ehang 184 is a 200Kg, eight-rotor aircraft which the company claims it is able to lift a single 100kg person, up 500 metres into the air and fly them at up to 100Kmph to any point on Google Maps, avoiding objects automatically and safely handling take-off and landing all without the need for any piloting skills from the person being carried. The range is as far as it could fly with the 23 minutes of flight time afforded by the batteries which a recharge time of 2 hours. Ehang is keen to point out that in the event of the drone experiencing problems, human pilots housed in custom built "command centres" will be able to take over and guide you to safety. Quadro UAS In the Netherlands, Thorstin Crijns the man behind Quadro UAS, has been developing an autonomous drone aircraft and has been featured on news and TV programs around Europe. Quadro UAS is primarily a one-man operation and Thorstin started out as a software engineer and gained experience whilst working and a company making Unmanned Aerial Systems and drones. However, he realized that he need to more experience in other technical areas like mechanical stress calculations and circuit design. And has spent a lot of time gaining these new skills in order to make his prototype aircraft. Aero-X The Aero-X from Los Angeles firm Aerofex Inc is a two man low altitude flying vehicle that is sort of a drone but not a drone and a sort of a flying All Terrain Vehicle. One of the major differences between this and the other electrically powered drone type craft is that this is much simpler and uses no electronic stability control systems. It is designed to be ridden much like a motorbike but can also be used as an unmanned vehicle to do agricultural duties like crop spraying or surveying for example. The idea is not a new one and is based on a design from over 50 years ago. The PA-59K flying jeep or Airgeep was created by Frank N. Piasecki, founder of the Piasecki Helicopter and aircraft Corporation. The Airgeep was the winner of a US army completion to make a low flying vehicle capable of traveling over land or water a bit like a hover craft but being able to fly over trees and larger obstacles, it also had speed of up to 75 mph. Flike The Flike or Flying Bike is an electrically powered tricopter drone designed by the Hungarian Bay Zoltan Ltd, a state owned non profit applied research institute in Hungary. The idea of the Flike was Originally conceived in the summer of 2014, when a magazine article appeared that said drones are OK as small craft but would not be able to carry the weight a person. This gave them the idea to make a drone that could carry a person and in the space of a year they took the idea from the drawing board to their first manned flight. Volocopter The German made Volocopter blurs the lines between a drone and a helicopter and is aimed at those who want the flying experience of the helicopter but without the high costs and long training time involved. The layout of the Volocopter is similar to a helicopter with all the rotors fixed in a grid above the main cabin and is similar in size to the swept area of a normal helicopter rotor. The difference between a helicopter is that the Volocopter has 18 electrically powered rotors which means there in much more built in redundancy, you could lose a couple of the rotors and still be able to fly. Oh come on people it's 2017! Nothing is called what it is anymore... Bruce is now Caitlyn. Aircraft Carriers are now Ferryboats. A Sleeping Bag is now a Fruit Roll Up - so if they want to call it a Drone when it's not, let them. We know what they really are :)
Tro Lenyu (6 days ago)
If it's piloted it is NOT a drone. It is no different than a helicopter.

Is it not called a drone if it is a ride on? What shall we call them? Perhaps I could use my soon to be made ebike for a delivery service? There would be no fuel, as heat is its only necessity, and the sun can supply that, and on days with no sun, then alternate heat sources could be used, burning sticks, propane, and the like. The idea I have for a fun e-bike that will propel me across the country will hopefully be achieved soon :-) Calculations show that one idea of the project shows that 180 thermoelectric chips are needed to produce 36 volts at 10 amps. if faster getting about is desirable, then calculations show that if I choose a higher voltage hub motor, that 48 volts at 10 amps can be achieved if I use 240 thermo electric chips, that it should produce 48 volts at 10 amps If still faster motors are desirable, a if I choose a 72 volt power source for a 72v hub motor, then let's see... 360 thermo electric chips would produce a steady 72 volts at 10 amps - this really is getting exciting! I see ebay has the availability of hot water pumps with low 12 and 24 volt requirements available for a small price too. If only I had enough power from the chips to take this project to the skies. Wonder how much voltage and current would be needed to make a flying drone large enough to carry me about? Would be so nice to just float about, and not have to worry about the occasional chuck hole and the like on the ground. Think how much more comfy it would be gliding on a cushion of air - if only - wonder how to calculate how much is needed? I know, i will see how the ones who made them did it. the power source they used can be used as an estimate of what I'd need with drone motors their size, what ever size that is. Lets see what google says about how they went about making those drones that can fly people - youtube shows that there are several versions of ride on drones. I wonder if someone will think of designing one with tilt motors, that way, when altitude is reached, a tilt of the propellers, or are they called rotors? well, if they were tilt-able forward, that might make the drone faster

У всех подобных изобретений есть одна слабость) это неоправданно высокий центр тяжести, на его стабилизацию уходит слишком много энергии. Лучше вертолёта уже не придумать 👌👌👌👋

Great to see these ideas like the air jeep was around in 1957. Piasecki was well ahead of his time for sure. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piasecki_VZ-8_Airgeep The Ehang 184 looks stunning. Some great work on the Quadro UAS, Aero-X and the design on the Flike drone is impressive. I just don't know what to think on the Volocopter. Safety is vital and the Volocopter has plenty redundancy. The sound must be pretty impressive on these.

Some of the older avation requirements were some thing like this . pilot's license not required if it's classified as an ultra lite does not fly above 10,000 ft. not capable of 250 knots in complete nose dive ! hmmm test pilots needed ?

I thought drone batteries suck with capacity, so I tried to be creative replacing drone batteries with same voltage but with much higher mAh. To my understanding mAh is nothing but just the capacity. For unknown reason, the test batteries don’t work. They make the drone spin but never generate enough power to take off and quickly run out of power. To my understanding 6000 mAh is supposed to last at least 7 times longer than 750mAh regular drone battery. This is regular drone battery: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252682980739?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT This is my creative researched battery to do the trick: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111767925522?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Someone please enlighten me.

I suppose huge drones would need lots of energy storage to withstand long and heavy flights(ie currying luggage from one city to another:)) . It would be cool though if the future drones would be automatic or have some short of AI. We did it in cars so why not in drones?

The footage is crude obviously, but with some camera technique and the right music ,,,,this is totally sellable stuff, i spent 30 years in media, this is the infancy of another genre, Can you imagine footage skimming the trees of the forest in this footage,,.... with this Music...awesome....sellable with the right marketing if you have good controlled footage of that kind of thing, landscapes , mindscapes camera work , message me at gamechanger547@gmail.com and lets talk some business. Not a single design that can get certified by the aviation authority from any respectable country.
Dino Alberini (1 month ago)
Mika Kuusela I meant certified as something you can fly in a controlled airspace.
Mika Kuusela (1 month ago)
Mythbusters tried to create their own jetpack. They got it certified, and found out that small enough contraption and it gets classified Ultra Light, which means it doesn't need to be certified neither requires it a pilots licence.
Dino Alberini (2 months ago)
gary63693 it's a provisional certificate. That's because you can not land it safely in case of power loss. Like a helicopter. Or a fixed wing airplane. Or a gyrocopter. Or anything with a permanent certificate. And no, the ballistic parachute doesn't count.
gary63693 (2 months ago)
The Volocopter VC200 has been certified in Germany, just so you know. Go to watch?v=OazFiIhwAEs and fast forward to 24 seconds and read the caption

Jim Barron (2 months ago)
They should name this class the "Deathwish Drones" People (and the aircraft) in fixed wing aircraft can survive most technical problems with result in an "unplanned landing". With a quad, once you're a short distance above the ground your chances of surviving a crash landing would be very poor. You'd at the very least have to hold a gun on me to get me to fly in a quadcopter, and it it was an automated one I'd have be be sure you were a very good aim before even that could get me in. Flying with airlines is as safe as it is only because each carries so many passengers - which has led to a truly extraordinary culture and technology of safety. Single passenger is inherently far more unsafe - much higher cost of maintenance per passenger mile (so far more pressure to cut costs in the wrong ways, no human pilot on board if the technology fails etc. If it's 10 miles or less, I'd rather walk (even taking a heavy load) than fly a single passenger drone. More and I'd find some alternative transportation.
