I hope you enjoy this video! One note: the little numbers that pop up in the bottom-left corner are references. By matching the number to the ones at the bottom of the description you can find where a piece of information comes from in the video.

There is a saying on the boat; that you never piss off the DOC, yeomen, and the cooks. I would like to say thank you for the acknowledgement of the cooks, because for the most part we are hardly ever mentioned. We are the heart & soul of the boat and we strive to do our best with what we got. 😎 Respectfully, CS1(SS) retired USN

sonar is old tech . currently , experts will sound off a whale or dolphin sound to detect other submarines . same principle as the sonar .

@10:15 I can't imagine carrying nuclear warheads would have made much of a difference. atomic bombs don't just explode like nitroglycerin. The fact that these are nuclear subs carrying radioactive material is enough to create a mess if the damage is severe enough regardless of whether it is carrying nukes, but beyond that...

Despite better pay and better chow, life on board a sub is still very much substandard.
rejvaik (12 hours ago)
India and Russia also have ELF capability meaning they can send one way messages consisting of 2 characters to a submarine that is still submerged anywhere in the world and at any depth. The US used to have ELF capability until 1980 when they decommissioned the ELF facility because the antenna was over 2.2 miles long and the output power requirements were too expensive to maintain.

Its called a Submarine, not a "sumarine" as you repeatedly say. Take the time to annunciate,
nbookie (2 days ago)
For comms a sub, please tell me they figured out the use of small disposable rov's that will take the days data, travel away & surface long after the sub is gone, burst the data to the satellite and then sink (maybe wait to re surface when a naval vessel is over head and says the password, or resurface to make enemy think a sub is still there as counter intel). I played with idea years ago as part of a signal Symposium at Ft. Gordon Georgia (signal corp). It got lots of attention like no one had thought of it. That was 20 years ago.

Canada almost had atomic powered submarines, until the United States of America used a treaty clause to block the sale of atomic reactors from the United Kingdom and another treaty clause to block Canada from receiving any atomic reactors. Why Canada couldn't have just built its own reactors, I don't know.

The chances of a submarine to collide with another sub is crazy.

There's a B in submarine. It's submarine, not summarine. Also, it's sub-mariners, not submarine-ers.
Rob Xones (16 days ago)
oh my god, i never had any idea submarines can be that GIGANTIC! This blew my mind
Samuel Johnston (17 days ago)
You can deploy VLF at 300 feet, not just 60
smithsway (17 days ago)
It's odd hearing your pronunciation of submariner. It should rhyme with mariner as in the " The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" but with sub in front...

Nuclear warheads have to be “turned on” to be dangerous. A crash would not detonate.
smithsway (17 days ago)
True, but a load of functional warheads scattered across the seabed is not an ideal scenario...

One way to track subs is magnetism. Subs have currents floating in them so when they sail, they disturb the Earth's magnetic lines. A plane or a ship can look for those lines disturbances.
Ictpilot Ictpilot (19 days ago)
@157 239n You have to fly over them and use MAD gear. Magnetic Anomaly Detection.
157 239n (21 days ago)
The disturbances are tiny, absolutely tiny, how can they even hope to pick them up if they're not really close to them?
Sam Neale (23 days ago)
I swear to god, why does our government (Australia) name anything related to water after the prime minister who drowned
157 239n (21 days ago)
In honor of him? I think it's a nice gesture
Connor Skudlarek (23 days ago)
Sadly, this video's title is pretty misleading. I thought you were going to explain how they work, not the battle strategy of having submarines or the life of crew on submarines.
J88go (23 days ago)
Why don't countries just make submarine killer drones that blast sonar all around, so if they find something they shoot if they get shot hey you just found a submarine.

Very good educational video, The US experimented with the use of ELF, which could penetrate MUCH deeper than VLF ever could, but it started killing plants and livestock in Wisconsin after continuous operation. US frequency was operated at around 74 Hertz, with a wavelength about a quarter of the Earth's Diameter. Radio waves CAN be dangerous. Source: AM US Submarine radioman.

I knew a brother of my friend who was years on British Nuclear Subs. Very nice guy, a bit quirky but spoke 5 languages fluently and was very smart. I'm sure he worked in listening and translating but never made him feel uncomfortable by asking any questions about his job. Especially when he was on holiday and stayed at our house for a week or so. He went out on his own to explore the area and our local international big city. We were 2 hours out in the country and I never asked where he went or what he did but I know it was sight seeing and his first time visiting our Country. But not in a sub. Can't reach our local international city with a sub.

We have one such VLF antenna at Jim Creek in Washington state and it is miles and miles long, that's an over simplification because space and time don't allow it here. As with most things, if you're interested, just Google it. It's all there ad nauseatum
