How to Ship Ebay Items Using the Post Office

2100 ratings | 372458 views
After shipping over 10,000 items in the past several years I thought I might be able to help those new to Ebay save money and grow a successful business. I sell mostly smaller items and use First Class and Priority Mail through the Post Office. Any item under 13 ounces can be shipped First Class. I seen a scale at Sams club and used for the Post office. about $25 ..its that what they cost? This is a Royal DG1 postal scale...I know they cost more but I am shipping small stuff. The biggest would be baseball bats.

Hi, very good video! Quick question and forgive me if it's been asked before: when the prepaid Ebay labels are printed out and put on the packages, if I decided to ship the packages at the post office, can I simply put them in the mail box or would I go to the counter and give my packages over to be shipped? Does it matter?
Victoria Grace (1 year ago)
Thank you so much for the reply, Ernest, very helpful!

You can put in your mailbox at the house or give to clerk at the Post Office.

After you pay for the label off of ebay and print it, do you just drop it off at the post office with the workers or do you have to pay again at the post office for them to take it.

So I am a final year Product Design student at Bournemouth University. For my final year project I am looking to design a product that will allow you to create your own custom sized packing box for when you are sending out items that you have sold online. You will be able to change the size of the box you create depending on the size of the item you are sending out. I am currently in the market research phase, and if any of you regularly send out differently sized items and are interested in a product of this nature please get in touch as I'd love to hear from you! This will help me gain a better understanding of the market I am looking to target, and hopefully will go towards designing a better product! Feel free to message me about this if it is of interest to you, or even if you just think it's a great idea! Any feedback would be highly appreciated. Cheers, Kav

Hi there, dropping by to let you know great vid! If you don't mind check out my vid as well. I don't want to leave a hyper-link and be rude but it shows how to begin an eBay shop buying and selling from online auctions!
pete smyth (3 years ago)
aint ebay great..they take 10% of your sale price AND shipping cost, then after the buyer pays via paypal, you lose another chunk of change..then you have to shell out for packing, printing labels and then the time it takes to list, take photo's,pack the item, get it posted, deal with questions, slow payers,non-payers,complainers..life's too short.
Ernest Bontrager (3 years ago)

Excellent video, I was looking for this. But I have a question. After scale the box and item I type the total and take print out label and prepare my box to take to the post office, do post office control the weight of box again there? and do we have a chance to pay for shipping using PayPal? or I can pay for shipping in post office? sorry just confuse about it. Thank you!
Calvin Huynh (2 years ago)
+Ernest Bontrager So, once your item sells, you print the shipping label and just bring it to the post office? That's it? Sorry, I'm new to this. haha
Ernest Bontrager (3 years ago)
+Dinazavr Dino You can pay at the post office. You can also set up a PayPal account to pay for your shipping.

Hi Ernie. Starting at the 3:20 mark in this video, you shipped an item via Priority Mail and you charged $6.99. The shipping price listed it as $6.82 to ship to a guy in New York. Did you list the item as calcuated shipping? And if so, how did you increase the amount to $6.99 after the auction was complete? Or did you weigh everything all packed up first, and then figure out how much it would cost to ship the farthest destination from you and just list that as the shipping amount in the auction? Thanks!
Ernest Bontrager (3 years ago)
+Nester I now do all free shipping. I estimate the shipping cost and add it to the minimum sales price. Most of my items are first class so I add $4.00 for shipping in my price. Priority is a lot harder to figure.

Hey nice video! Few questions here, I don't know much about this stuff. 1. Do you have to use stamps? Or do you just stick the ebay sticker on it and you're good? 2. When you mail it, do you just take it to the post office and stick it in the mail box thing, or do you have to wait in line to give to a person? 3. What's the difference between priority and first class? 4. Can you use a UPS drop off box, or would you have to do something else for them to ship it?
J-rod ! (3 years ago)
Thank you sir! I think I'm ready to start selling now.
Ernest Bontrager (3 years ago)
+jthiggs 96 Answer to number 1: You can use stamps or use the built in paypal shipping label on Ebay. 2: If you have the correct postage on package you can just drop it off. 3. First class is only for packages less than 14 ounces. Priority is faster but costs more. 4: You can use USPS not UPS.

One thing I wonder about shipping on eBay is when paying the postage on eBay and then printing the label shipping, taping it on the parcel and then you take the parcel to the post office, or leave it before your home to the carrier, or give it to the carrier directly when he comes. Do you go to the post office to pay postage?

88GmG (4 years ago)
+Bonamana gee gee baby baby So you can't approximate weight? Because if it's heavier, they won't ship it and return it to you since you pay for less weight? I thought you could approximate weight and then loose or gain slighty money from the shipping... So I need to go to the post office, weight my package and pay to them if I don't have a scale?

Ernest, I would like to know if there are stores (like the online store you use ) for getting bubble wrap, envelopes, etc that are actual stores and not online? Another question: if I want to ship something in a box. Do I get the box from the post office?

Sure your local post office can do that. Just take the buyers address with you. Then pay at post office for shipping.

I have more questions cuz i am completely new to ebay and that online shipping. i have more than 50 small stuffs like jewelry, postcard and etc.when i calculate shipping by post office site or calculator at ebay the price is still significant (10-12$) for less than 500grams. people wont buy my items when they see it is not a free shipping and i do not have any business to negotiate about price. Is there any way to cut shipping costs by post office? I mean when an item worth 8$ but i have to pay 10$ for its shipment so what is the point in selling it? any advice?

Sofia Valdez (4 years ago)
Okay..so I'm a beginner at the whole ebay thing and I absolutely have no knowledge when it comes to shipping- I've never shipped one thing in my life. So I know nothing about the boxes or anything like that.  I have listed four different items. On all of them, I just let ebay calculate the shipping cost. The thing is though, I never even put in the dimensions, they just appeared- did ebay recognize my product and fill in all that information? My product is a backpack and supposedly it weights 1-2 pounds, is 12x9x4 and for the 'type' it has selected "Package (or thick envelope)" I mean, I don't even know if these measurements are even accurate- where did they even come from? I'm so confused right now. Anyways, my shipping cost is supposedly "$5.80- $11.50 (varies by buyer's location)" and for the service it has selected 'USPS Priority mail (1-3 business days)" Okay...so then what kind of box or package or whatever am I supposed to buy to put the backpack in...what if the shipping cost actually ends up being much more than ebay calculated? Sorry, I probably sound so dumb- but I am when it comes to this whole shipping thing. Like I said, I've never shipped anything in my life before, or even gone to the postal office. I'm pretty much clueless in this area. Thanks so much if you can help.  If you want to see my products and the backpack itself my username is vald.sofi Once again, I didn't input the measurements for ANY of my products- they just somehow appeared. Also...how could the shipping possibly cost $5.80 for any location if the priority mail medium box (which I would need for a backpack right?) costs $12?  If someone could just give me clear instructions or a guide or something on what exactly I'm supposed to do, you'd be a life saver!! Hopefully before anyone actually buys my products.
cyc7lops (4 years ago)
Thank you Ernie; this was incredibly helpful.  I've been looking for this type of video for months without success.  There are some other shipping vids out there, but yours is the best and covers all the bases.  Showing us how to wrap and providing visuals of the supplies was exactly what I was looking for. I perused the first screen of questions and didn't see anything about the scale, so I do have one question.  The scale can be expensive, and I want to purchase the right kind.  What brand/model of scale do you have, what is the range (min/max) of pounds it weighs, about how much did it cost, do you recommend a seller, and does it cover all your weighing needs? Thank you!
cyc7lops (4 years ago)
+Ernest Bontrager Thanks Ernie, I appreciate your time.
Ernest Bontrager (4 years ago)
+cyc7lops You can buy an electronic scale on Ebay or office supply store. Mine goes to 3 pounds. I use a manual type scale for heavier items up to 20 pounds.

Can I throw the package in that blue thingy for the mail ?
Oscar Rojas (4 years ago)
So let's say I listed a hoodie and it was sold for 20 and then shipping on ebay was 5 then after it sells I will have 20 plus 5 just for shipping so I print the label that shipping would be for 5 and then put it on the package, when I go to the postal office would I just tell them to ship it and then they wouldn't charge me since it comes with the $5 shipping label?
Pistol Pete (4 years ago)
well if you are talking about ACTUAL shipping price of the item then yes, you could definitely do that. Now, if you charged a FIXED cost, then you will need to make sure that it is the same as the ACTUAL shipping price, or more. Just use a shipping calculator to find the out the right amount.

You mean you don't throw items in with no protection and then when they show up damaged and the seller leaves negative feedback you troll him and call him a bunch of names? Lol. I should probably send this video to almost every eBayer i buy stuff from. I hate when i have to use eBay. Last time i received a damaged item i apparently was a perfectionist because i expected the seller to include protection for the item instead of him throwing it in an old paper envelope. I am such a scumbag! =(

+Ernest Bontrager Yup it's always good if the items never come back to you. :)

I know bubble wrap is expensive but broken items are too. Thanks for watching my video.

Just write the buyers address on the package and take to local post office.

I am trying to sell sports cards in quantities of 10-15 but with the casing i put them in to safely ship they become very bulky. I was wondering if you have any ideas to help me ship them and maintain a worthwhile profit.

Hello, I was wondering when you weigh an item do you weigh the envelope, item and bubble wrap, or just the item and the envelope? I'm pretty sure it's a dumb question. I'm just trying to cover all my bases.

Yes you weigh the envelope, item and bubble wrap. You need to have the total weight of the package and then round up to next ounce to cover the weight of the label.
