China went to the moon in 3 years ? Wow

I hope SpaceX and BlueOrigin are investing in cybersecurity because the Chinese are master thieves and they will just wait until those companies make a breakthrough and then hack them to steal the tech and leapfrog the process.
JF F (1 month ago)
Bozos and Blue Origin; nothing happening there anytime soon. However, since china - collectively - represents a low-life thief that steals everything, we should put lots of plausible nonsense out there for them to "invent". Fair play IMO..

Rob Fraser (1 month ago)
What has Russia done lately? China has put a man in space and then more people, now they are about to launch their first space station while at the beginning of a lunar program that sees them aiming to put someone on the moon by 2025. I'd say they are far ahead of modern day Russia.

I don't think China is racing to Mars or even the moon. There are not even a single announcement that they are going to build a base on the moon. The recent moon drone is more like a side project that is just doing catch up. Calling this a competition is ridiculous. China real focus now is building infrastructures and Silk Road 2.0.

The market for satellite launches is huge and given the trend towards building cheaper, smaller and low orbit satellites (CubeSats typically are about 3lbs) is only likely to get bigger and more importantly go down market. I.e the trend towards cheaper and less sophisticated launch vehicles. This is where lots of private companies will shine and ISRO targets this segment. These folks don't sell the most sophisticated launch vehicles but the cheapest cost to launch. Hence the trend towards launching over 100 satellites from a single rocket (ISRO in 2017). Again the claim to fame is not by being the best or most sophisticated but the most cost effective and by giving a "good enough" probability of success. Certainly not appropriate for a $200mm satellite but great for one that costs a few hundred thousand dollars (and I'm not kidding about the price point). So I'll say ISROs approach is actually very commercial.

That's odd because the pentagon are currently worried that a large percentage of military hardware is dependent on chips manufactured in China, you're acting as if the fact China makes all of the world's electronic devices is a new thing... You're hardened Motorola or Rockwell semiconductors might be dreamed up in the US but they are built in Chinese fabrication plants and shipped over.

Flash357 (12 days ago)
Because every other Western countries thinks China is harmless. We know that isn't true though. China wants to be the world power. They want to be what US is. Think about it. China is over fishing the world's oceans illegally. They are building bases out in the oceans near or at other country's borders to control the trading routes, and the waters for other reasons. They are stealing tech, and anything they can get hold of with impunity. They are basically raping other country's resources like in Africa, and in South America. Did you know that China let those countries borrow money and when they can't pay, they force them to hand their strategic areas like ports to China? We all know that those Countries can't pay back those loans. Chinese knows that also. Chinese gov't isn't harmless. They are the opposite of that. Believe me when I say this. We will have, in the future, a WW3. It will be a war on resources. When that happens, China will be our biggest threat in the world, not the US, or Russia. Well, Russia might side with China though......

This is so stupid. We should all be collaborating together, joining our resources for these programs. We are talking about the future of the human species here. Think about the endless resources around us just within reach of our fingertips. All of humanity would benefit greatly if we could reduce the price of space travel, use artificial intelligence to mine asteroids and other space bodies. Maybe move industrial production to space and begin to heal our planet from our burning of fossil fuels.
Robert Sutton (1 month ago)
+fireson23 It's claimed the PRC already has Maybe they will hire Harrison Schmidt
fireson23 (1 month ago)
+Firefly 100% agree with you. The US can be so short sighted. They are fighting for control of the South China Sea, a body of water half way across the planet from them because they claim that China is building Islands in that region. Meanwhile 2/3s of the trade that flows through there goes right into Chinese ports. Why in the world would the Chinese blockade the trade that is their economic lifeline? If anything they are trying to secure their own trade routes. Furthermore the US trades with China more than any other country in that region. Why in the world would China blockade their own trade with the US. They should be happy that their second largest trading partner is securing their trade routes with them and the rest of the world. There are a lot of pirates around that area and they do highjack ships from time to time. Meanwhile space is there for the taking and NASA budget is only $20 Billion a year compared with the Pentagon's nearly $800 Billion. That is so ridiculous. These people really have no understanding or idea of the endless wealth and riches around us in Space. The moon alone, which is less than 6 days away from earth is said to have 3 million tones of Helium 3. A substance that just one 18 wheeler truck load of it would generate enough power to sustain the entire US's energy needs for 6 months. You figure that out.

I think there should be a space station orbiting mars and there should be a moon base with a constant presence of people working on them. The moon base could be the start of building a city on the moon. Maybe CERN, astronermy and mining the moon and asteroids could be the start of a work force on the moon. And a space station orbiting Mars could approach work the same way earth's space station does. Personally I think people should be assembling space crafts from earth's space station to make it normal to be working industrialy in space. making space ship the size of container ships for colonisation of the solar system. For a true constant presence of people in the solar system with a work ethic. Maybe Google could create a work force based on maping the planet of the soler system, they created Google earth they could use one of the first ships to start creating Google mars and the other 7 planet based on a work force of people in space on a ship to normalise living in space . .

The US and Russia got rockets, and to a degree, nuclear weapons from the Germans. You can't complain about IP theft when your country pardons a war criminal in exchange for his research. Shirō Ishii was arguably more evil than anyone in the Nazi regime ever was and the US offered him a complete pardon in exchange for all of his biology research at Unit 731. Vivisecting pregnant women and then their babies without sedating either of them was just one of his many achievements.

The next 20 years are crucial to save this planet. Instead of looking into space for life just look right here and see the species that are going extinct. The plastic oceans etc. I don't think mankind has earned the right to travel to another planet.
Jameel Ja (2 hours ago)
+Ian Wilson I agree the CO2 methane/emissions have nothing to do with the plastics/junk in our oceans, landfills and in space. What I'm saying, by exploring space we might develop spinoff technology that could help us with clean-up our junk.
Ian Wilson (2 hours ago)
+Jameel Ja The climate is fine, the junk in space and on the planet in the form of pollution has nothing to do with climate or CO2 propaganda. The problem is the single use and throw away mindset, without thought to where or who this garbage/pollution will effect. Basically it is a care less attitude which if is not sorted prior to space travel will be taken to other planets and aid in that planets pollution/destruction.
Jameel Ja (1 month ago)
But maybe by exploring and developing technologies for space travel we'll also discover new technologies that can help us save/restore our climate.

Come on, everyone knows that SpaceX got helps from NASA. Stop kidding me.
VitalFir 46 (1 month ago)
+Seastallion Yeah no doubt about that. Probably at the beginning they'll use the NASA designs then their own. Everything has to start somewhere
Seastallion (1 month ago)
+VitalFir 46 Don't forget, that pretty much all of the life support equipment (including toilets) that will be in the Starship will have come from NASA as well. I have no doubt that over time SpaceX will improve on those too, but in the meantime they will have the basic designs to work with. It really is a public/private partnership, where SpaceX as a US aerospace company is entitled to a certain amount of assistance from NASA, yet in return NASA will gain the access to whatever capabilities that SpaceX can develop as well. The Starship will be a perfect example of that. NASA will help with the guts of the ship, but SpaceX will help NASA with the sheer capabilities that Starship offers, and that they independently developed outside of NASA's purview.
VitalFir 46 (1 month ago)
+Seastallion Yeah that much is true. For example i think the PICA-X material that SpaceX uses in their dragon spacecraft originally came from NASA and they improved it a bit for better reusability
Seastallion (1 month ago)
+VitalFir 46 SpaceX does have some technology advisors from NASA, but while they may indeed get some help from NASA there is NO doubt that SpaceX is taking it and improving on it without the governmental red tape getting in the way.
VitalFir 46 (1 month ago)
They got money from them to build the Falcon 9 and Dragon capsules. Nothing else other than contracts to launch sats and resupply missions to the ISS

China is developing a space plane that can takeoff and land horizontally, planned to be ready by the early 2020s, when that happens, space travel will be so much cheaper. Not to mention by the 2020s when the ISS decommissions, China will be the only nation in the world with a permanent presence in orbit.

Rob Fraser (1 month ago)
The only nation developing a space plane is Britain with Skylon and the SABRE engine, and with a 2nd test facility being built in the US and a lot of cash being injected by the US department of defence that places the US a lot closer than China to having one.

The rocket scientists came from many places, (and engineers would be a better term, scientists is a vry broad term). They came from Boeing, Lockheed, Raytheon, General Dynamics, JPL, NASA, USC, UCLA, Caltech and other institutions across the country. (there are no shortages of aerospace engineers in the USA) Musk is a billionair with a fantastic reputation for doing exciting and revolutionary ideas, he had no problem attracting talent. That is why I brought up Elon. Elon WHY SpaceX was able to exist and survive as a PRIVATE COMPANY.

So if spaceX landed on Mars eventually, did they set up a new country there or the US will claim it as their new territory with their flag ? If there's a real outpost in that planet, i hope it won't be tainted by any countries on Earth. China, US, Russia, they're all hopeless, all about competition, war and dominance. To these countries, space race wasn't about exploration for the sake of science and humanity... it's all about winning the competition on tech and resources.

There's an international treaty stating that no country can claim celestial bodies for their own, like the moon, mars, etc. For example the planting of the US flag on the moon was purely sentimental and didn't mean the US was claiming the moon for themselves. Nothing about private companies however
