How drunk can a pilot be and still fly?!

2703 ratings | 79383 views
In this video I will be discussing a subject witch is a bit taboo in the business. What happens if a pilot gets caught on the influence of drugs or alcohol? What kind of enforcement is there and, at the end, can a pilot get a speed ticket? Enjoy and fly safe!

Love your channel! When I started flying in the 70's (as a passenger) it was more of a privilege than a necessity. Most passengers were in dress clothes and very well behaved. Today? lets just say a lot has changed..

wouldn't advise anybody to fly, go or drive when they have to much alcohol and I would suggest you have 0 alcohol in your blood when you do something commercial, I also would suggest, not to eat to much fruits... they can have the same effect to you, as alcohol would have. lol speeding cause you want to get the aircraft parked, cause you need to go to the toilet very fast - that would be hilarious to explain. but wondering if you have an emergency case on board and the airport already knows about that, would the pilot be allowed to break the speed limit and if yes how much faster is he allowed to go, to meet with the emergency doctor and his crew.

I completely disagree with hair drug tests for pilots. I can understand immediate testing on the job to ensure the safety of that flight, but what a pilot does on their own time is their business. Hair tests are also prone to false positives because it only takes 1 nano gram to trigger a positive result. considering hair tests can look back years all it takes is walking through a single cloud of second hand THC smoke at a concert to ensure your next test will be positive.

Also, being 'fit for duty' isn't just about being being technically sober at the time of check-in. It can take days for the body and mind to fully recover from a night of binge drinking.

What would be the case of say an American pilot with a medical cannabis prescription would that still be 0 tolerance because surely they can’t discriminate against certain medicines as long as you’re not under the influence while you fly?
Joe Kertész (2 months ago)
Great video, informative as always. Question is why would you speed in the first place... in air or taxi? What's the benefit there?
dannydaw59 (2 months ago)
So now that weed is legal in Canada I wonder what the rules are about hair samples. Say a Canadian pilot was on vacation and smoked some weed at a party several days before going back to work. Would they be fired?
GWR Productions 2014 (2 months ago)
6:01 from what I remember a hair sample is only required as a last resort

Being a pilot is a tremendous responsibility I personally would not want.

What if your on prescription pain killers? Like I take tramadol and oxycodone.
Nicholas DeLisi (2 months ago)
I would think that you have to produce the prescription to show that it's legal. It's possible that you would have to retire at that point. I'm not a pilot, but I'm thinking about what every company tends to do in regards to these drugs.

What do you do if you believe you might get accidentally intoxicated, say you buy a pack of smokes and after having tried them are not sure if they weren't laced with something illicit? Does your Airline has some policy for turning yourself in for testing in such cases?

What I dont understand why Alcohol is accepted somewhat. It is the most dangerous drug period and its legal. What about caffeine or cigarettes? Those can heavily impact the pilot especially with their withdrawal symptoms.

Sleep deprivation / fatigue can have an impact on performance similar to alcohol. Do pilots have the chance to try to see how their performance is degrades by this in e.g. a simulator to be better able to judge if they are fit to fly? If the company doesn't have stricter limits and a pilot decides to abandon common sense, which limit would apply for alcohol? That of the country that issued the licence, where the aircraft is registred, the country it's airspace is currently operating in?

Well perhaps all pilots should breath test before getting on the plane as a matter of course. First time I've seen pilot dude rattled. That was neat though
Mark Sketch (6 months ago)
What if you’re a pilot who has been prescribed painkillers from a Dr for an official medical reason such as a broken leg, you’re leg heals but you have been taking opioids whilst getting through your physio therapy then u return to service but you’re test shows that a month or two ago you have taken them, obviously they would no longer be effecting your performance but may still show up??

How do the Dutch authorities deal with marijuana in your hair?
Jay St. Clair (8 months ago)
Cannabis is not a drug and its certainly NOT a hard drug as you mentioned. Do you really feel that way or were you just carried away with the podcast? I totally understand the zero drug tolerance policy for air crew. I just thought you were a little more wordly and educated. You certainly have enough smarts to captain a 737, so your ideology surrounding cannabis is bizarre?

It's hard to believe that there are Comments on YouTube trying to 'normalise' cannabis use for driving, motorbike riding, train driving, flying airliners... "Oh yeah, man, it's no problem, it doesn't affect you, it just relaxes you. I'm a better driver when I'm high or have had a few beers..." Blah, blah, blah. Wrong. You just THINK you're a better driver. And if marijuana 'just relaxes you', it affects you. Yes it does. That's why you smoke it. Relaxed as in dozy? Dopey? Gigglingly disconnected from reality? Slowed reactions? Impaired judgement? That's a damn stupid way to fly a plane, even if the systems are automated. How'd you react if/when they went wrong? You COULDN'T react because you wouldn't be sufficiently connected or concerned. The same with downing booze. Its sole purpose is to affect your senses. People don't drink alcohol to quench their thirst - water will do that - they drink for the effect is has on them. Booze and drugs exist only to derange your senses, to alter your perception of reality. Hey, that's not a problem in your own home - have a ball, have fun, go for it, party-on, knock yourself out - but if you're performing surgery or delivering babies or working in ATC or landing in dense fog at London Heathrow, things are different. Very different. And if you've got my kids on board, watch out, buddy. Look Mr Mentour Pilot in the eye. Be honest with yourself. And BE HONEST WITH THE 200 PEOPLE PUTTING THEIR TRUST IN YOU, YOU STUPID, ARROGANT, IGNORANT, SELFISH B**TARD. :-) Thank you for flying Elli Airways.

I can remember the legendary Flying Tigers. When I was working at Zurich-Kloten airport at the end of the 1970s, there was a weekly cargo charter with a Boeing 747 from Zurich to the USA. When we were finished loading, once a captain waved us from the open cockpit window with a bottle of jack daniels. He took a strong sip, closed the window and then taxied to take off...

I liked this video by 1:30. I have so much respect for this guy. his intullect, his professionalism, his thinking outside the box personality, his care towards others. Such a gentleman.

Ill be honest here. Its no real secre that many pilots dirng like fish and are drug users - drug of choice seems to be coke. You need somthing to get u up and going after a few hours of sleep, Coffee does not work, and sleep meds as your always in different time zones. Ever one has anxiety. I cant say much but many pilots have ways to pass drug testing. They are like eveyr one else. As long as it does not interfere with thee flying I trust they are making a responsible desition. The DOT is a job stopper. Flying under the influence is defiantly a no no. Just do your research. Stop over thinking... With in 1 hour medications can be flushed out of yours system And your safe to fly. When I injured my back I had to take medicine for pain and the DOT did not detect it.. My supervisor actually said oh man no effing way dude ha ha! When I had my divorce and my mother died I was on Xanax. I used it for sleep and nerve close to flying time.. Fly safe and it should not effect your safe flying ability as long as you are taking it as prescribed and far away from flight time.. Oh atterol keeps pilots and crew alert and stimulates brain function so pilots can fly safer and better. It has been proven. The Canadian Carriers allow it. This is a touch subject. I think pilots need to stay healthy and use what ever medication that is needed. If you need to pull the wool ove there eyes they do what you need to do. Good luck
Clyde Ward (1 year ago)
I don't think marijuana should be considered "hardcore", but I completely understand why a commercial pilot shouldn't be allowed. All of those VERY important things you HAVE to remember to get yourself and the hundreds of people in your care on the ground after a problem seems to require an on-point memory, and MJ is known to mess with memory.

Being straight edge completely eliminates these tests, which I am. The only trouble is that my right ear is sensitive to pressure changes and it hurts bad whilst the cabin decompressing. There goes my pilot license...

I think the drug one is a bit harsh. Of course if it’s actually in your system that is a definite breach. Like cocaine etc staying in your system 3 days or so. I think that if you’re on holiday for a couple weeks and take something like that once and aren’t back flying for over a week that should be fine tbh. Or not necessarily fine but not really of any concern to the airline or safety of anyone
Sunny Wu (1 year ago)
So why do older pilots get more drug tests?
Mentour Pilot (1 year ago)
They don’t. At least not here in Europe
Blatherskite (1 year ago)
Yes. They get arrested regularly at Oslo Gardermoen. Idiots.

Wow amazing video. I loved the intro part. I would love to see a cop giving a breathalyser test to a pilot on video! Didnt think they would do it in the cockpit either. I have nothing against alcohol or drugs, but I sure wouldnt want my pilot high or drunk! A car carries ~4, but planes is a different story. Please pilots keep this in mind and keep up the great work you are doing. There should never be any bad eggs among pilots.
Allan Folmersen (3 months ago)
It's not just about the people in your own car. Other people are put in danger too, if you're unable to drive safely, either through intoxication or due to inattentiveness. Imagine you swerve into the path of a bus, loaded with 70 people who then have to deal with the consequences of going off-road.
Grant Rennie (1 year ago)
I have heard of pilots being dragged out of planes twice locally, apparently they had a big drink on Saturday and went to fly on monday, am wondering who decided that they thought they were over a limit...
