Building an Off Grid Tiny Cabin in Twelve Days

14873 ratings | 697165 views
A retrospective look at the building process of our off grid tiny cabin in 2016. See how we built our off grid shelter over 12 drawn out days and raced the winter to create a suitable dwelling for a family of four on our acres of woods and wetlands. music: https://soundcloud.com/travisrinker

Very cool video. Is the camper for reinforcements???
Hay Woods and Wetlands (2 days ago)
The camper was our first dwelling on the property. Fine for summer living, but not suitable for the winter climates of our region. That's why we built the cabin, so we could stay out here comfortably in below freezing temps. The camper now serves as the summer kitchen with it's propane fridge stove and hot water heater and large water storage tank. Also provides a place to shower if needed and a few extra beds for summer guests. Thanks for watching!

So sick of these shitty tiny home stories great now you live in a box the only ONLY reason why you want to live off the grid cause you can not afford to LIVE on the grid
Hay Woods and Wetlands (8 days ago)
We don't live here full time. We spend about 125 days out of the year here as we explore and learn to live differently and more simply. It's an experimental place for us to have some fun and be outdoors. Some day we hope to shed the golden leash of city life and move out to our land, but time will tell.

I really want to do this in Australia. There are so many council restrictions here. Its so frustrating.
Hay Woods and Wetlands (8 days ago)
Tough to navigate some of that stuff. We're fairly free to do practice a lot of off grid strategies so we're pretty lucky compared to some of the states down south, but I hear you. Thanks for watching

My Mom and I built a tiny cabin on our property when I was in middle school. A tip - this dwelling is small enough that the walls and roof can be assembled while laying on the ground, then raised and attached. It makes the job a lot easier.
Jacob Johnson (10 days ago)
@Kanoshe Not talking about framing like was done here. I mean, nearly fully assemble.

So sad that people pay taxes to this sick government, I dont and haven't and there is no law that says you have to pay taxes
Captain Obvious (11 days ago)
Only God's government will fix it. No human way of ruling can ever work. We weren't made for ruling ourselves Mankind in general is being misled by the devil (1 John 5:19). I hope more people learn the truth before it's too late. Write a reply here if you want to get in contact. I always like to share the truth with people. Peace

Awesome video & efficient/gets to pts. Impt question tho; why do Cdns accept communism? It is your land - why give authority for another to tell u u can only have 100sf and not 140sf?? Who exactly says that & why do all accept that??
Hay Woods and Wetlands (22 days ago)
No one said we couldn't have a larger place. It just would have changed the zoning from agricultural land to residential. It would have required development and building permits and then changed the yearly taxes as well. I believe this would be similar in any developed country with rural municipalities. Do you not need building permits for structures over 100 sq ft where you live? Thanks for watching.
Gavin O (23 days ago)
You mention your good friend "Dave" at 3:50 in the video. Did this Dave ever do a season in Whistler? And remember two people called Gavin and Leah? If so we'd really like to get in contact with him! :)

@Hay Woods and Wetlands thanks for your reply, your friend Dave looks very like an old friend of ours we would love to get back in contact with. Great video by the way, hope your cabin gives you many years of happiness.

What is it with americans and Canadians using damned plucky guitar music every time you make videos about camping, wilderness survival, anything about art or creativity. ..etc. I could go on. Be original for a change. MUTE.
Hay Woods and Wetlands (23 days ago)
Didn't think gangsta rap or Choral chamber music fit the mood, haha. What would you have suggested for a soundtrack?
kosmosleha (23 days ago)
What the fuck kind of free country is this? You hve to live in a shitty ass shack to avoid being taxed to death on your own land.
Hay Woods and Wetlands (23 days ago)
This is a recreational property for us so we're not here full time. Currently it's zoned as agricultural land and if we take out a building permit put up a structure larger than this it would trigger a rezoning of the property to residential. That's why the taxes would change so dramatically. So we don't "live" in our shitty shack, we just use it as shelter when we're out on the property enjoying the woods.

What’s that RV for in the final drone image? When it gets too cramped for you, your wife, and children? I’m not saying tiny living is unreasonable. But you paint a picture of 4 people fitting comfortably in that. I can see 2 tops. But 4 is unreasonable. You’re only making it uncomfortable for your children. Although they have plenty of outside space which I believe is important, I believe personal space is also important. And they will not get that there.
Hay Woods and Wetlands (29 days ago)
We don't live here full time. They're fine.

Do you take shits outside in the cold, or what? Maybe i am too much of a city person, needing a bathroom. I mean you are in kanada, you could lose a penis in the cold, that mofo could freeze solid. Cool cabin tho.
Hay Woods and Wetlands (1 month ago)
Yer noodle is kept from freezing from the inside out. That steamy pee keeps things flowing. Yes. We poop in an outhouse all four seasons. biggest concern is yer butt cheeks sticking to the seat and you needing to call for help. Otherwise not such a big deal. Thanks for watching!

Hello fellow saskatchewanner. Looks great but maybe a little tiny for growing family. Im wondering if our land taxes would go up if you built 2 or 3 100 sq foot cabins on same property? one maxed out for sleeping and one for some sleeping sleeping and cooking? does loft count in sq foot?
Hay Woods and Wetlands (1 month ago)
We have a few dwellings out on the property now a days including a large Yurt and a camper trailer as well. I imagine the boys will begin camping out and taking over other shelters as they get older. Shouldn't be an issue building multiple 100sq ft buildings and the loft does not count. Just the footprint.

Nice to see someone building one of these without spending ungodly amounts of money which seems to be the new trend. We used to just call them sheds even though we built them completely livable. Funny how times change, people would laugh at us when we told them about our "house".
