So let´s look at the different types of landing gears. The most common one out there is the single axle landing gear with a tyre fitted on each side mounted to a large strut. Mostly used on passenger jets such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. With increasing weight, you need more surface, so more tyres to evenly distribute the weight of the aircraft. So if we look at the main landing gear of the Boeing 757, you have the main landing gear strut, which by the way is filled with nitrogen acting as a spring force and hydraulic fluids for dampening. Then you have the truck or boogie, and four tires in tandem pairs. But more importantly, for today´s topic, you see this little hydraulic actuator right here, the so-called truck positioning actuator aka the tilt actuator. This little actuator is attached aft of the main gear strut and pushes the rear wheels downwards forcing the forward wheels to move upwards as the truck is axially mounted to the main strut. As the plane comes in for landing, the rear wheels touch-down first. The actuator holds up against the pushing force, otherwise, the rear tires could bounce up, slamming the forward tires into the ground. Once the weight of the plane presses the tires onto ground, a pressure relief valve opens up and the actuator collapses letting both tires touch down. This all happens in the split of a second. Once the actuator is fully compressed, so weight on wheels, it triggers the air/ground sensing unit from air to ground before the nose wheel has touched down, automatically extending the ground spoilers and allowing thrust reverser deployment and depressurizing the aircraft etc. But see more in the video Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe BIG THANK YOU TO THE AMAZING SUPPORT BY MY DEAR YOUTUBE COLLEAGUES PROVIDING ME WITH THEIR GREAT CONTENT. Running analogy is false. Mess your heels up doing that
mccloysong (5 days ago)
I never knew. I mistakenly thought it was so the main gear could all touch down at the same time, and to cushion the touchdown as the wing gear would compress. Thanks for the trivia.

All of those automatic functions resulting from the air/ground sensor sounds like one broken sensor away from a crash.

here is another why for you Captain Joe ,,, why does military pilots and the ones flying Air Force One land their planes much smother than commercial pilots ??

It's amazing the engineering that goes into an aircraft. There is a ton of thought that goes into every system. Great FYI!

H Max (15 days ago)
Is it too far off to think that it may be better for less tire wear, that the tires be spinning at the same speed as the plane is landing? Is there such a system? Or am I just some keyboard airplane engineer just coming up with crap?
Emmanuel Addae (16 days ago)
I have a question for you Captain Joe. Please share light on the structural makeup of aircraft wings such that two giant engines are able to be suspended on them and still fly safely?
Brian Percival (16 days ago)
Good info. Also only 2 wheels contacting runway first is less torque stress on the struts. If 2 =XX and 4 =xxxx and 6 =xxxxxx is the amount of rotational stress at the strut and wing beam mounting points. Another is cost in tire replacement, as rears contact first each and every time they wear faster. and are rotated out on a replacement schedule. Vice versa for front wheels down angle.
Remesh Mahadeva Iyer (16 days ago)
Captain I have a question ....on landing gear ...when an aircraft like the 777 moves on the runway a strange noise as if the tyres are hitting a gutter in a spoiled road is been heard. The aircraft should be moving smoothly isn’t it why such a noise from the under carriage. But I haven’t observed it in a 737 or 320. What is that noise ?
bassbuckmaster (16 days ago)
SlipNslide have been around long enough there are millions just laying around... Cover the runway, ditch the wheels on the plane and add a bigger fuel tank. Now Im off to a medical operation video to show them where they went wrong
CoolAsFreya (17 days ago)
So how would gravity extension work on the C5 Galaxy? Or if the gear doesn't deploy and rotate properly are you screwed into an emergency landing?
K. PacificNW (17 days ago)
Does this guy make more money as a YouTube pilot than he did as a regular pilot? And what that accent? South African?
TK 6059 (18 days ago)
But the Airbus A340-600 has gear which tilts in opposite directions. The outer wheels tilt upward and the one on the centerline tilt downward.

krafty777 (24 days ago)
I wish you had shown the C17 landing gear and the B52 landing gear as well. Both are very unique designs. The B52 however is truly a one of a kind, being that the gear can all be steered in such a way as to allow the aircraft to takeoff and land in extreme crosswind conditions with the aircraft actually traveling down the runway at extreme angles. I hope you will consider doing a second video featuring these two unique landing gear designs. As always, love the videos.👍

Captain Joe that is very amazing I love watching your videos I'm from the US not a pilot but I am a fan of yours and watching this about wheels in the plane wow very amazing I love learning about planes I wanted to be a pilot when I was young but I got scared and that was my biggest mistake not becoming an airline pilot not studying it as a kid I just hope all Pilots got this kind of knowledge that you have don't make things better in life and pilots and passengers

I like to refer to the tilted position of the 747's wing landing gears as being in a "wheelie" position, based on how motorcyclists pop wheelies.
Witgang Younotube (1 month ago)
when hydraulics fail in that military plane the pilot still performs a "gravity drop" but instead of doing it on the landing gear he does it on the back door after he putt on his parachute. also the captain will always be the last to leave the plane , he will have to run the most

What If somehow they engineered some sort of lightweight, extremely efficient kind of fins that mount to the side of the rims of the undercarriage and these bad boys kind of get the tires spinning before touchdown to reduce wear and tear on the rubber? I realize they would have to be small because space is a major issue that's why I said they should be incredibly efficient, I wonder if it would be worth or if tires are cheap enough that they don't need to worry about that stuff
