How Drones Could Change The Shipping Industry

Today, container ships transport more than 90% of all goods in the world, but it can take over a month for those goods to sail from Beijing to New York. Cargo drones could be the disruption needed in a global supply chain that has been largely unchanged since the 1950s. By land, trucks move nearly 71 percent of all freight tonnage in the United States, but there's a shortage of truck drivers in the United States. So how do you speed up shipments while keeping personnel low? The future of shipping looks very much unmanned. » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. cargo is where hyperloop will come handy and when the technology is proven and all kinks resolved then start human transportation via hyperloop, last time to rely on small electric vans... too many drones flying on gas is pollution nuisance, aircrafts are the largest polluters most people do not know that, it has much larger carbon footprint per kg transport than land vehicles.

the amount of energy needed to lift a ton of stuff in the air and transport it is far greater than the amount of energy needed to transport that ton of stuff by land/sea. The future needs more locally produced tons of stuff :)

And of course, we are all aware that military drones never miss their intended target and are always on the ball..

All it takes is for one drone to crash carrying a 80 thousand pound container on top of a neighborhood.

Yes, a little drone will fly a shipping container across the ocean...footing dumb

Send those drones thru the desert where wind goes 80 mph let’s see how reliable they are.
Dorian Bernard (15 days ago)
Next day delivery not fast enough , how about we just build a teleporting machine that would zap your package right into your living room. 🤣😂 Thousands of drones flying around delivering packages all day long not crashing into trees or electrical wires , or just malfunctioning or failing in midair and crashing down to the ground hitting God-knows-what sounds like a good idea.🤔 What's the worst that could happen damaging some property or killing someone let's do it. 😂🤣

Great idea for Mexican cartels to ship their goodies. Lol
John Hansford (16 days ago)
There is no truck driver shortage!!!!!!! Another lie the government keeps saying even though people keep proving them wrong. So they can try to justify the self driving trucks/ 80000 lbs weapon of mass disstruction. If someone hacks into one hauling fuel of any kind boom weapon of mass disstruction.

Unmanned electric ships? They would be less vulnerable to pirates, and could be faster with no provision for crew
Jason Ray (24 days ago)
Just use electric cargo planes. What a morons!
batner (24 days ago)
Air freight is much more expensive. Even if drones do it. It's just energy calculation that shows this. Delivery time can be managed by a proper distribution network. The Paretto law rules logistics, most commonly purchased items can be fast to deliver.

The greenies will not like this. They want to ban air travel completely.
charlieboye2009 (29 days ago)
I don't understand. They complain that Cargo jets are inefficient and guzzling gas. Well guess what , that is the Most efficient way of transporting Air freight in Bulk worldwide and this is not going to change. They complain about costs, when that costs translates into time saved, the more you pay the faster it arrives and this works better over longer distances. Getting rid of pilots does not change the fact that whatever they propose uses jet engines, has wings, drinks jet fuel and needs a runway to work to get there faster. I just don't see the point of this.
Fishn Giggles (29 days ago)
You guys are high it costs way more than that

Hey nice Video. In times of climate chance it would be interesting to add, that drones and airplanes need much more energy than ships and truks.
Keenan Centlivre (1 month ago)
Large jet fueled drones may be economically sound, but it's a nightmare for the environment to push that transportation model to a large scale. Idc how many tree fundraisers there are, that would be a step backwards.
Mike Dunigan (1 month ago)
Make better batteries. As soon as we can stop using chemistry and start using atomic structure to store charge the viability will change. If I can cut 80% of the weight and add the 4000% power what we can lift will change. Once I pull electrons right off atoms to power something it's ability will climb. Because then I can make the craft into the battery even further enhancing it's carrying capacity. Ship a cargo container? Possibly, couldn't use drones to deliver a container full of steel, but food and other lighter goods yes. I think ports would change drastically if drones just flew in and picked a ship clean like buzzards.

Truck drivers and pilot shortage can be solve quickly, just raise their pay give them better benefits instead of companies making record profits avert year and billionaires making 1 to 20 billion a year could share some of that with their workers, there u go no need to pay me millions as ceo to solve gas companies problems
John Hughes (1 month ago)
There is not a shortage of drivers that's a lie. Look at truck stops thier always full.companies are losing drivers cause they are dropping pay and as a result drivers are going independent. They dont count independent drivers because they are self employed
Salty man Reviews (1 month ago)
More of that false narrative, there is no shortage of truck drivers, there is however a shortage of trucking companies that pay non starvation wages and with a proper work/life balance. Nobody wants to be away from home for weeks on end and make the same as a Walmart cashier. Shipping warehouses also pay terrible wages with little to no benefits while working their employees into their graves. I'm a trucker and I see it every day, this industry now only hires the worst of the worst there is no future here.

Really what needs to happen is we need to re-elect Donald Trump for the next four years and with that we need to couple up his next presidency with the infrastructure bill that’s worth $2 trillion that’s going to put massive amounts of people to work and rebuild our infrastructure and only at that point should we be thinking about adding all of these other things to our repertoire, only after ours is up and running efficiently at least 90% of the time... But our nation is crumbled our infrastructure sucks our refineries are old and we should already be off the rubber tire and in the Jetsons age, but because of the war on petrol in the petrodollar greed has taken over on this planet Thusly interrupting anything that could come good of rebuilding our infrastructure... Somebody has to put our planet on hold until we get things rebuilt...

Everybody wants to go on the fear of global warming, you have cars on the ground that pollute the skies now you’re gonna put batteries in the sky‘s that need to be charged for machines that are on the ground to fly in the sky‘s within this huge GPS net that is supposed to keep control of all of the people the cargo the planes the cars and the satellites, Jesus Christ our skies are going to be clogged from the ground up... Get rid of all the satellites all the airplanes and you will find that our planet probably reacts better than it does now with all of the reflective Surfaces eating up the energy that is supposed to help this planet spin on the right access and run the way it is supposed to according to mother nature… In another 20 years you won’t even be able to see the stars the skies will be so lit up with traffic 24 seven from satellites to airplanes to drones to smog

Believe it or not ,flying a drone in Egypt is against law and will send you to jail for one year at minimum and 1000 US$ fine, I think using camels for shipping is more safe there.
