This community of divers is reconnecting with their heritage in a unique way. What intrigues you the most about their exploration?
Nerdsage68 (3 hours ago)
When they were instructed to take the sand from Mozambique..from the last place were people set foot before being placed on a slave ship..and dump that sand near the wreck site. That was profound, and touched me deeply.

National Geographic plz tell the truth. Because you missing out very important information and I know you won't tell us where we really came from.

This is very touching and beautiful. A serious question though, I understand that the ships that sank killed all those aboard, and perhaps some of the Africans who parished could've been aunts and uncles, but aren't the ancestors the ones who survived the journey?
Asha Olujimi (51 minutes ago)
This is not true we are Moors, the europeans didn't have the power to transport slaves, they were our slaves in 1555 read the book Moors and Masonry by Abdullah Talib Mosi Bey for the truth,we ruled the sea all 7 of them real history is still not being told.

This is truly a touching and powerful jexpedition. Reclaiming who we are in those who were lost and never acknowledged. We need to educate each other ad cascade on so that generations to follow will understand who they are, not defined by the color of their skin but by the fabric of their culture.

This is a very sensitive subject and it's hard to talk about the fact that everyone who is of dark skin (so called black) is NOT from Africa But Indeed Indigenous to the Americas NOBODY wants to talk about the (Blacks) who where already here but only the ones brought over and then claim Africa but Africa is not claiming their relatives in America!
Bill B. (21 hours ago)
Fake news! We've always been here family.
@Angel TheMUA what SLAVE trade are you talking about cause I never ever seen a so called AFRICAN being brought to the americas and building anything?..and I also wanna know about this boat/ship like was it a wooden or cargo ship?
Angel TheMUA (21 hours ago)
Bill B. I think some of us were here. And some came in the slave trade. It is definitely not the origin story of Africans in the Americas.

These so call Africans that died in the water are Hebrew Israelites. Native Africans are the ones who sold or traded the Hebrew Israelites to the Englishman. They really not telling the true story. There is a difference. You know Native African women don't grow Afros and the men don't grown beards. Black Israelites meaning, most of the Black Americans. Because if where the descendent of Jacob and Jacob is a Hebrew Israelites, then what that makes us. Ijs people and this is a fact.

Crystal Wingate Stop with that nonsense. WE are not, nor do we want to be Israelites. If you’re from the Ethiopian Hebrews, well, more power to you. Be happy in your history. Now that some of the wreckages have been discovered and we know the names of these ships, will the owners and the families who benefited be identified as well. A recompense should be on all those who gathered wealth from the insurer to the port of delivery.

How could it be their ancestors if they didn’t make it to shore ?
N C (18 days ago)
Tamuhawk It is a symbolic thing that is being done. But, peoples direct ancestors might have been on one of those ships, because families might have been separated at the Moment of their deportation. If one ship sank and the other one made it, the survivors would be the direct ancestors, while the other part of the family is on the ground of the sea.

Wow - 1st.The communal aspect and how they were able to cultivate that: learning; discovering; healing as a community. Self-care is currently promoted but communal care I believe to be vital. 2nd The diverse group of Black divers I found very inspiring, we often are presented with images of archaeologists that don’t look like us uncovering our lost histories.

some years ago i helped out on the trouvadore archeological dig. trouvadore was the last slave ship in the caribbean. we found the boat in 6 feet of water buried under sand. local schools now go snorkelling there as part of their history lessons.
Lesley Steele (30 days ago)
david tunnicliff what did you do to assist on the dig!? I’m a black underwater filmmaker and am very curious!
david tunnicliff (1 month ago)
sharks follow ships also because ships create shadows, and fish like shadows. sharks also eat fish. just saying.
david tunnicliff (29 days ago)
@Lesley Steele it is not my intention to discredit the video or the facts of the story. simply pointing out (as a reply to a previous comment) that sharks follow boats because of the shadows which are created. it is a haven for fish to hide in the shadows. they dont just follow because they think people are going to be thrown overboard. It is purely a comment on an open forum. May i suggest that you 'move on'?
Lesley Steele (29 days ago)
@david tunnicliff this video is not about sharks however or validating their reputation. This video is about recognizing the historical facts of what occurred overseas to slaves during the transAtlantic slave trade. Obviously living in the sea, sharks eat fish...they also eat people. Which are the very people described in the video. Although your point is to validate the nature of sharks, again it’s irrelevant in this context and quite insensitive. Sharks aren’t the subject of the video - the Africans who were killed during the voyage and thrown overboard are the subjects, people and ancestors of African people who lost their lives regardless. The necessity to point out shark behavior is not relevant and translates as if you are discrediting the facts of what occurred.
david tunnicliff (29 days ago)
@Lesley Steele well i thought it was as sharks get a bad rep. they just dont go around eating people.
Lesley Steele (30 days ago)
david tunnicliff not relative to the context here.

None of us are black. That’s one of the many nicknames we have been given since we were gathered to the west coast of Africa and shipped over here. Our people are special. More special than anyone could imagine. A peculiar treasure that will be above soon. We are the people of the book. Our people cry out now and will never be forgotten. They will be avenged. We live in the last days.

For all of those who escaped slavery by going down with a ship, I am relieved that they died before beginning the most humiliating tenure a person can undertake. And for all of those who made it ashore alive and endured that most heinous of institutions, my heart bleeds. RIP to all of you before touchdown and after. I really appreciated this mini documentary! The slave trade is a key piece of our history that connects us to who our ancestors truly are. We have always had our history with us, in our hands, access to it, all the history before the slave trade even the reason why the slave trade happened...just open your Bibles...Deuteronomy 28. Read it and see the truth.

I know who I am and what I look like and like I said before no one is black. Black is not a race. Black is a color and no one skin is black we are brown. You’re in denial if you look in the mirror and you see yourself as black. Before you call yourself trolling statements and correcting someone you need to do your research. To label yourself as black in America means that you have no rights. Do your research.
