How to Back Up a Tractor Trailer - An Aerial Guide

3021 ratings | 253680 views
An aerial view of a tractor trailer backing up was exactly what I wanted when I was struggling to learn how to back in. I hope this helps even just one of you guys get the hang of this difficult and necessary task for this job. #rookieforlife Allie Knight drives a big rig all over the lower 48 states. Spend time on the roads of the United States with this weird chick from Boston and her ridiculous cat, Spike. Everyday is a little different filmed in glorious 1080p at 60 frames per second. A vinyl version of digital video. See the USA from the driver's seat of a Peterbilt 579 named Lazarus. All music is found on epidemicsound.com or freemusicarchive.org === Post Address: P.O. That is quite unrealistic with that much room might as well do a straight back

The real deal starts at 3:23

Muzak was great! What was the Title and Artist?
Henry Washington (6 months ago)
It would have helped at around 3:50 if you SHOWED WHICH WAY TIRES ARE POINTING AND WHEN TO STEER.

This commentary got me rollin!!! lol I love it. Thank you for sharing

Newbie here, how come they didn't hook up their lines before backing completely in? New trailor designs? Spring brakes?
Dennis Prow (8 months ago)
Nvm he hooked up after haha
Robert L (8 months ago)
Sometimes you don't have all that room to swing forward like that to set up your backing. Sometimes you got to do a straight 90 degree L backing.

when i was a kid there was a guy who lived across the street he parked his Jim Palmer truck in the street every all the time for as long as i can remember

So this is hands down the funniest backing video I have seen. I was looking for a video for my buddy who is just starting out and so happy I came across yours. Thanks for a great video.

You you're not exactly sure that it is a one shot for the tail to clear the hole, DO a PULLUP. Or a Couple of pull ups!
Sunny Island (11 months ago)
This video should have 500,000 views. And that includes 4-wheelers.
Sunny Island (11 months ago)
Nice!! The birds eye view is great! The BEST non-driving instructional tool!! (Aerial overhead bird's eye view).

I’m testing Friday for my license. I wish I could find a yard to get more practice in.

Hey how did you do??
Mr. Ian Fisher (11 months ago)
what would make this video useful is a simple animation showing which way the steering wheel is being turned
Big Fan (11 months ago)
How many people are here because they are a pro at backing? Raise your hand. Lol. Not me. Awesome video. Great job

Hey, still better than me in American Truck Simulator. When I’m on the road in my semi truck I often put the luves of the virtual drivers around me in danger, whilst making drivers in GTA Online seem like safe drivers.
Jae Quan (1 year ago)
I applaud you for birds' eye view perspective. It really gives people a good idea on how the truck and trailer react with each other. Remember guys and gals, you'll actually need to get out and look (GOAL). Also, watch out for yellow deer.

HI Allie - 1- it was totally cool to watch 2 - though not a truck driver, it totally helped me back my rig into a bay on my Scania Truck Simulator :-) 3 - The Muzak.......the muzak. Great video my friend I learned from it and enjoyed it.

Why would you want to do a complicated alley dock backing scenario when you have all that room and could pull up and back in straight?

If there would’ve been another trailer on the left side, he would hit that trailer already. He has a lot of room to backup.

Thank you for this. Having to watch several times but I really like the vantage point.

I ok but I want to know what and where the back half is going. Looks like a tight turn is an ass end donut slightly wider than my engine unit plus 3ft

Well done and agree; it's not a race. Don't care if some Cowboy whips in and gets it done before I do. Slow and easy.

Get out and look saved my bacon last night backing into a spot. I was less than 5" from pining a sleeper with and in memoriam sticker where the trailer would've hit. If you're not sure, stop, pull up a little, park and get out. You'll thank yourself later. Thank you for the vid. My problem is setting up and allowing for trailer swing to align for the spot I want. Working at it every day. Getting better. Cheers.

I think that music should be standard for all trucks when backing, is really cool when you get it right, makes a fool out of you when you mess up
C-GUDH (2 years ago)
Did you use a drone to film
Allie Knight (2 years ago)
Yes, this is filmed on a DJI Phantom 3
Elizabeth Duncan (2 years ago)
LoL... when I saw that pivot point you added to the video I thought, "Wow, that's clever and looks difficult. I wonder how She added that to the video?" then saw the little comment you added that it was hard to do and literally laughed out loud. EXCELLENT VIDEO and I really, REALLY appreciate that you made this and posted it. I was hoping to find an aerial view of turning radiuses and found yours! I was a "wiz" at driving a 40' transit school bus and was asked to join the competitive "roadeo team" by my instructor while I was still doing my behind-the-wheel training. But driving a trailer will be a whole new experience and I'm trying to learn as much as possible BEFORE entering a CDL school. Your video is very helpful, FUNNY and impressive. Subscribed! :)

At first I thought this was a doofus driving around in circles. While I was right, it's actually a lot more than that as well.

When I was a new driver, I really wished that truck-stops offered this view angle from cameras mounted on the parking lot light poles. You could access the cameras with an app on your tablet or phone. But no, I had to learn the regular way. 😜 Great video!!
Paul Yanez (2 years ago)
try making a video with a parking lot full of trailers you know like a real life situation.

it's not a 90° his tractor and trailer was cocked. The test is being perpendicular to the cones/trailer. that was a 45.

ALL these backing tutorial videos are missing several concepts. 1) forward-pulling, reverse-pushing 2) apply laws of physics to ur driving 3) brake straight, then turn
David Fiedler (3 years ago)
You would love the docks where I work. 17 docks, fully inside the warehouse. Oh, they are all 45* to the building, really throws off some drivers .
David Solomon (3 years ago)
why does this video missing a date in the title of it?
chris gast (3 years ago)
It was certainly cool to watch. What I would suggest, is maybe include a view of the steering wheel in a small window while the driver is backing up. Maybe attach a cam to the driver's neck, facing the steering wheel. That would mean syncing (synchronizing) the two videos, but that would be a bit more helpful.
Don (3 years ago)
The overhead perspective of the turning radius with the tandems in different locations was awesome. Well done Allie.
Fred Klonin (3 years ago)
Very impressive. I don't drive a truck but I can see where this video could even help those that pull RV's. Most can't park hence the drive thru camping spot.
