THE ENGINEER'S DON'T WAVE FROM THE TRAINS ANYMORE; NOT LIKE THEY DID BACK IN 1954, STILL GET A FARAWAY LOOK IN MY EYE WHEN I HEAR THAT LONLY WHISTLE IN THE NIGHT.(CHRIS)

Too bad this yard doesn't exist anymore.

It's very sad indeed.

25:08 - Do loaded container wells get humped? Or are they flat-switched only?
max shelltrack (29 days ago)
No they don't get humped their no need to switch em.
iceclimber (3 months ago)
Parrot Avenue is the best spot in this video, only because of how the area around Inman Yard is pretty shady. Also I hear that NS police don't like people filming on the bridges across Inman.
mbmars01 (3 months ago)
Railroad police never likes any people near yards - for good reason.
Drums and Trains (3 months ago)
Cool video! I was in Austell this past Friday and Saturday filming trains. I'm gonna have to check out those two yards next time i'm up there.
iceclimber (3 months ago)
@mbmars01 I'm very saddened by it. All I've ever seen of Tilford was a drone view as it was being demolished.
mbmars01 (3 months ago)
Thanks! Unfortunately, Tilford isn't anymore what it was. Hump yard and shops were demolished by CSX last year.

Each loco has driver or only leader loco?
Степан Медведев (4 months ago)
@mbmars01 , oh, 20000 tons! Very, very heavy monsters. Finally, I now have an idea of how locomotives work in long and heavy trains in the USA. Before that, I thought that in every locomotive there is a driver and they synchronize the work on the radio. Obviously, I was mistaken. Thank you very much for the explanation. Please tell us if the locomotives are changed in transcontinental trains or only in case of breakdown, and how they are refueled if not changed. And more interestingly, if a locomotive breaks down in the middle or at the end of a train, does the engineer turn it off remotely and drive the train to the nearest station or stop and repair it? What if a fire in an average locomotive? Does an automatic fire extinguishing system work?
mbmars01 (4 months ago)
Trains weights are typically between 3000 and 20000 tons, depending on length and loads. All locos are controlled from the lead engine; those in the middle or at the end are controlled by radio.
Степан Медведев (4 months ago)
@mbmars01 , I like long trains of 100-200 cars, but I did not see them live, so I wonder how such trains work. We simply do not have such and I compare American and Russian trains. And I like the American landscapes, among which are moving these long trains. Tell me, what is the total weight of loaded freight trains from 100-200 wagons? And I’m also interested in how locomotives are controlled in the middle of a train.
mbmars01 (4 months ago)
Interesting, that's different. Typical trains here have 100-200 cars and typically two to four engines. The engineer drives the train and the conductor is responsible for the cargo.
Степан Медведев (4 months ago)
@mbmars01 , well, thank you for explain. In Russia each train has 1-1.5 engines per 55-75 cars in the head and two engineers.

can anybody tell me what kind of engine is that 1024 at 27:30?
Kevin Baker (1 year ago)
The 1024 is an EMD SD70ACe - the latest (and last) of the EMD SD70-type of diesel locomotive. It is one of the most common six-axle EMD's on the rails today - BNSF, CN, CP, KCS, NS, UP, and Ferromex all have them on their rosters. Alaska Railroad never bought any, and CSX had 20, but they were sold in 2018.
ALBERTO MADEIRA JR (1 year ago)
What is the limited speed in these yards?

Amon Hendrix (10 months ago)
@mbmars01 there is a side road that goes and ends right where that train is sitting. It's used for crew changes
mbmars01 (1 year ago)
Right, but I only noticed it later when I worked on the video. The train was far away and tied down in the yard. I had already seen the Interstate HU before.

Isotec1 (1 year ago)
explain to me why we see the CSX and Norfolk Southern engines hooked up together?I have seen this with other railroads. And is KCS a new railroad company?
mbmars01 (1 year ago)
It’s called a slug. It doesn’t have an own diesel engine, but the axles are powered by electric traction motors. In stop-and-go yard work, tractive effort is more important than horsepower, so the more axles are driven the more efficiently yard jobs can be done.

I wonder if there was ever been a train where all of its locomotives are backwards XD because i always see one or two locos in a multi pull always facing backwards while the main puller is facing forwards and I’ve just wondered if there has ever been a train will all multi pullers facing backwards
mbmars01 (1 year ago)
Not anymore. Lead locos on long-distance trains always face forward. Long hood forward consists only exist on local trains. Long time ago, NS ran trains LHF, but not anymore.

I don't understand why people keep complaining about the radio talk. I understand it fine. It's railroad talk short, fast, and to the point.
Timothy Bogans (1 year ago)
RedneckFreightTrain1 I agree with you I understand these men perfectly it's railroad talk with a southern accent nothing hard about this.
Edward Baggett (1 year ago)
are the voices talk between the trains ?
mbmars01 (1 year ago)
It's communication between engineers and conductors of their trains and between train crews and dispatcher. Crews of different trains rarely need to talk to each other, but sometimes they also do.

It used to be fun there! I just uploaded a video to my channel of what it looks like now. They have leveled the hump and have started ripping out the receiving yard tracks. The silence is deafening!!

It's too bad that they are ripping out Tilford Yard as we speak!!
mbmars01 (1 year ago)
CSX has been turned into a strictly profit-oriented business. The land of Tilford Yard is very valuable and will sell very well to investors. Problem is, one can sell silverware only once...

CSX’s Tilford Yard is no longer in service. The yard is completely empty but the mainlines are still used

Ever since Harrison shut down the CSX yard, would you care to see what the yard is like today?!
mbmars01 (2 years ago)
I don't think so. First, this is a two-hour ride from where I live into a traffic-congested area (Atlanta!) and second, it would just be frustrating... I have seen pictures form the Hamlet Yard after they shut down humping there and the empty tracks looked very sad.

I'm from, and live in, Atlanta, and I used to go down with my camera to nearby Howell Tower and Junction. It's a stone's throw from where this was shot. It's a big Atl. railroad junction and I used to like to watch the tower throw those switches. Took lots of pictures ( most of them bad) and even saw Savannah and Atlanta steam engine #750, a 4-6-2, come through there more than once with The New Georgia Railroad dinner train. The dinner train was killed off by insurance costs.
Tommy Thomason (2 years ago)
Yep, we still have that bad traffic, no matter how many additions to the freeways we build - lol!
mbmars01 (2 years ago)
Cool. Atlanta is doubtless a great railroad town. Unfortunately, car traffic is bad at all times. That's why I rarely come to Atlanta for railfanning.
Greg H (2 years ago)
The defect detector announced milepost #8.  I assume milepost ZERO is the one in downtown Atlanta.....near Underground....where the city actually began.  The Vance AL to Brunswick GA autorack train (at 'Bridge') must have been hauling Mercedes Benz's since the MB assembly plant is at Vance, and Brunswick is MB's main US port.  Once upon a time automobiles were hauled 'in the open'.....no protective sides or tops on the rack carriers.  But rock throwing trackside vandals soon made protective covering on these carriers mandatory. I've watched your video several times and always see (or hear)  something I missed before.  Great editing.  Be safe out there.....Perry Blvd , Hollywood Rd., etc. aren't exactly  known to be warm and fuzzy neighborhoods.
Colin (2 months ago)
Greg H I know this is a rather old comment but my dad worked as a quality control manager for a company that supplied parts for the big 3 auto makers, he made several trips to Detroit to the ford plant, Kansas City, Janesville, WI to name just a few and I remember him telling me when I was a kid in the mid-eighties about how they were going to have to cover all the rail cars because of the damage to the cars. Sorry, you gave me flashbacks to my childhood... thanks!
mbmars01 (2 years ago)
Nice that you discover new things the more often you watch it. I typically also see details only when I edit the videos, but not necessarily while recording the material. I know the area isn't great but I rarely go there. It's not close to where I live anyway.

Enjoyed this very much.  Old Atlantan here....remember when this was an L&N RR yard...named for John Tilford, an L&N president.   I believe that Inman was named for Samuel Inman.....Atlanta cotton merchant and businessman....but could be wrong.   Keep up the good work.

Nathan Kayle (2 years ago)
Imagine what this would have look like back in the steam-days. Pity no videos of that! :-(
mbmars01 (2 years ago)
Well, there were times when the administrative power regulated railroads almost to their death, while similar measures were not applied in the same way to other means of transportation that back then were considered modern. Things might change again, but it's to a large extent up to the railroads to create a political lobby working in their favor. BTW, I'm confident that even railfans could help (e.g., by explaining how railroads work like this and other channels do), but the railroads are rather blind on this eye and not very supportive...
Nathan Kayle (2 years ago)
This is sad to hear. I find it ironic that at a time when there is a lot of talk about saving energy and improving our country's infrastructure, it seems that our railroad system is going backwards. I've seen miles and miles of RR track abandoned and no new rails at all. Trains can move freight much more energy efficiently than trucks so why are our highways clogged with trucks?
mbmars01 (2 years ago)
Oh I know. But this video here will soon be a historical document of another, recent era as the announced closure of the hump yard and other facilities will degrade CSX's Tilford Yard. The activity shown in the video might already be a relic of the past in a few days.

Wooden sleepers and not a single electrified line feels a bit old school to me as an European. C'mon America, time to modernise.
FanArtFlan (2 years ago)
These rails are owned by private companies, and electrifying the lines is an unneeded expense for them. it would also reduce the amount of freight they could carry. No one in the government is interested in forcing them to modernize, either. I'd like to see more passenger rail, too, but it might have to be separate from what's seen here.
