Dried fruit doesn’t sound like anything special, but the magic of Japanese hoshigaki is in the method. While Americans tend to eat Hachiya persimmons fresh, Laureance Hauben of Penryn Orchard in California says, Japanese persimmon lovers reserve the best for drying. The result? Japan’s way of doing it is waaaay better than Korea or China’s. You can literally see the love, effort, and patience the Japanese put into making them and not the rushed manufactured way Korea does them.

Thank you such a lovely reply😉😉
Arashi Kage (30 days ago)
June Francis Perez Sweet and chewy like candy. Expensive af tho. $15 for four dried persimmons. But when you understand the love, patience, and care that the Japanese put into making them, including brushing and massaging, it’s definitely worth it.

I haven't tried persimmon fruit once. I don't even know how it taste. Sour, sweet and bitter or how aromatic it is???.
lexi fern (4 months ago)
@AnnJulee unless you know someone that will pay for my trip I'm too poor lol
AnnJulee (4 months ago)
So do I, Lexi!! :) I LOVE tomatoes as well, especially cherry tomatoes (the size of grapes and come in a dozen different colors), but maybe you and I are describing different kinds of persimmons...because they do vary in size and color. Because the persimmon fruit I’m used to (locally grown and imported), tastes just like I described, while normal sized tomatoes (similar size of persimmons) tend to be much softer in texture and far less sweeter. Hummmmm?! 🤔 I think perhaps you should come visit California this November and judge for yourself, Lexi :)
lexi fern (4 months ago)
Don't be fooled it tastes like a sweet fruity tomato. That being said I love tomatos
AnnJulee (4 months ago)
I’m Swedish and discovered this fruit about 8 years ago and enjoyed it around November/ Christmas time in California since then (both imported from Asia and locally grown in CA), and the taste and texture in NOTHING like a tomato, Rapha :) It’s sweet, juicy and has a crunch similar to apples with no seeds at all and a faint aroma almost like peaches...and if you ripen it for a couple of days in a dry dark place (or in a paper bag) is becomes softer like a mango and much sweeter. It’s too bad that it’s not a year round kind of fruit (on the market for 3-4 weeks tops) and rarely found in a preserved form in a jar (like a jam), but now that I know Japanese enjoy it dry...Amazon here I come...! :)

No wonder why it was so expensive when I brought it at my local chinatown supermarket.
AnnJulee (4 months ago)
Where do you live, Panda?! I’m in California...and when it’s persimmon season here (3-4 weeks around mid November), it’s mostly sold 2 to 3 pounds for $1 (whether it’s locally grown or imported). Maybe it’s expensive at your local supermarket because it’s sold dry, but if it’s fresh you’re shopping for...maybe you should come buy it here...November is almost upon us! :)

I’ve never had dried persimmons and didn’t even know that Japanese enjoy it this way, Verzosa, but I’ve had it fresh for the last 8 years in California (I’m Swedish and never heard of it before that). Its sold fresh (locally grown and imported), and its season is very short (3-4 weeks tops), around mid November. I’m not quite sure dried persimmon could compare with the’s sweet, juicy and has a crunch similar to apples with no seeds at all and a faint aroma almost like peaches...and if you ripen it for a couple of days in a dry dark place (or in a paper bag) is becomes softer like a mango and much sweeter. Its VERY tasty. Too bad it’s not a year round kind of fruit, and rarely found in a preserved form like a jam, but now that I know Japanese enjoy it dry, I’m sure Amazon would deliver...and maybe you’d consider a visit to California this year and enjoy it fresh, Verzosa :)

AnnJulee (4 months ago)
Your profile pic shows the American flag, if you’re close to California you can enjoy it fresh, you know! :) Its season is very short (3-4 weeks tops), around mid November (locally grown and imported), and it’s sold in heaps (2-3 pounds for $1 for a couple of weeks then 5-6 pounds for $1 after that)...and it tastes awesome! :)

Does drying astringent persimmons work? Since i should pick them when they are not ripen. In Iran we call 'em "khormaloo" and write it like خرمالو We have two of them in the yard and i can't find any book about how to prune them for more yield and how rejuvenating them so they don't grow leggy branches.
