Why Spam Calls Are At An All-Time High

20693 ratings | 1431018 views
Robocalls are at an all-time high. On average, Americans received more than 2,000 robocalls every second in October, up 25% from the previous month. With 49 billion robocalls so far this year, all four major U.S. phone carriers now offer some form of blocking or screening service, such as T-Mobile's well known "Scam Likely" label. Congress and state officials passed new robocall regulations in recent months and have seen an uptick in successful cases against the scammers. Meanwhile, hundreds of tech start-ups are developing new ways to tackle the problem. » Subscribe to CNBC: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC » Subscribe to CNBC TV: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision » Subscribe to CNBC Classic: https://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassic About CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. But it’s not fair that we have to pay for this feature. Also Do Not Call List DOES NOT WORK! I STILL get calls.
Kandice Klein (8 hours ago)
Don’t answer the phone is the simplest thing and get the call block from your provider and you’re done !!! they don’t call me anymore ever I might get one a day instead of 50 a day now ....it works!

How can I whitelist a few numbers with the US carriers like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T & T-Mobile? So those numbers can't be flagged as a "Spam likely"! Can anyone share the instructions, how doing it, please?!

They call you and you answer and follow through. Shows how stupid the population is. Why would you receive a call and give out your ssn or any detail about you is beyond idiotic. So yeah, if I was a scammer I’ll continue calling.

I read them John 3:16 and message them back Christian tracts....a friend from church sings Amazing Grace to them.

Thank you. I used to love it when I got a call about my credit cards, car warranty or student loan debts. I have no credit cards, my car is very old so no warranty and I never had a student loan. This video tells me I should not even tell them to take me off their list - as it is almost certainly an illegal robocall - by talking to them (and telling them nothing they can hurt me with - I thought - except I just proved it was an active number) just gets my number sold to other robocallers. So just refuse the call then block the number.
mick mccrory (11 hours ago)
Just keep saying "Yes" every time they ask a question. After a few minutes, they will figure out you are f**king with them.

I keep getting a Chinese voice scam and I have no idea what it's saying. I keep blocking the number and they have like 427 other numbers to call from and they do.

Apple used my label "Scam Likely" when I had to block all these incoming combination numbers, still using my iPhone 5. I put that as a custom label when nothing more at the time could take place. Don't know if that's since Apple can use real time data to analyze. But I did custom label those numbers to block.
Carlos Spears (10 hours ago)

I spend about $85 a year printing business cards to get calls for work, so I have to answer most phone calls or I will lose business if I don’t! I am a sole proprietorship...Robo calls literally keep me from getting my work done and they keep me from getting in contact with legitimate customers. So, I add every scam call that I can verify as a scammer to the same contact in my phone, every time a new scammer calls I update the same contact with the new number...the name on that contact is Scam so once you’ve blocked that one contact overtime you will eventually see all the scam calls end up in your blocked list automatically, it’s the only solution I’ve come up with personally.

Sometimes its not all about selling the individual something, but used as a new form of fear based harassment with a series of untraceable numbers. Voip callers can use make a numbers based from any state.

If the call gives me the option to speak to a live rep, I usually play along for a while to waste their time then ask, "What are you wearing?" in a creepy voice.

Elvira Florence (4 days ago)
It's not only on phone. On mails, newspaper, seminar, or telephone or ads tv, they are scams everywhere. You just need to be with your friends and family all the time so they can stop you panicking over scams.
Daniel B (5 days ago)
okay someone please inform me about this. When you get a suspected spam/scam call that you decide you're not going to answer do you immediately press the red reject button or do you let it just finish ringing and go to voicemail etc. Is one option better than the other for purposes of giving the impression that the number isn't active? Is it best that I don't even have a custom voicemail message with my voice on it? please help because i just started getting more spam calls today i think i tipped them off in some way that my number is active

Legitimate telemarketers? WTH does that mean??? 🤬🤬🤬
montydesijokes (5 days ago)
Very easy solution to this problem. Instead of going after advertising companies who are making these calls go after the companies that are actually selling the product. The company making these calls could be in a different country and hard to catch but the country which is actually selling the product for example solar panels is locally based go after the company that is in United States who come to your house to actually sell the product. They're the ones who are hiring these companies to call your phone

I use an app called Blacklist plus pro. My phone only rings when the caller is in my contact list. I don't understand why people can't solve such minor problems.

FIRST OFF WHO is getting all the money they are sueing these scam calls for, because I know it isn't me. AND I DESERVE A TON OF THAT MONEY from all the calls I've received in 2 weeks. Where is that money going???? I just got a new phone with a new ## 2 weeks ago, the first day I got 37 calls. I keep blocking but they keep coming. Plus at least 5 spam text a day. Usually between 12 to 27 calls A DAY. SO SICK OF IT.

They call me everyday about my "student loans"... um, I don't have any. When I tell them that, they hang up & call back the next day.. 😡😡 someone once called my grandma claiming they were her grandson and needed bail money. She was scared & thought it was my brother! My brother has a masters degree in banking. Not a criminal at all! Luckily she called family members to confirm, but how many elderly ppl did they get money from like this??
Chris P. Bacon (6 days ago)
I have an idea about this. Whenever a filthy scammer calls you, airhorn them. If a significant amount of people airhorned scammers, they would be afraid to call people.
Hugh Haefner (6 days ago)
I block every robo call and within a few weeks they have almost stopped. Hit the three dots at the top right of your screen and block number option will appear and press block and that number cannot call again. They do have other numbers they can use but keep blocking and eventually they run out of numbers to call you from. I have blocked over 50 numbers and it's now rare for me to get any robo calls or any other blocked numbers.

Scamming the scammer videos are SO FUNNY!
Roxor128 (6 days ago)
Huh. I virtually never get scam or robocalls on my mobile phone. They're all to the landline. Maybe it's because in Australia all mobile phones have numbers in the 04 or 05 area codes and the scammers have programmed their dialling computers to avoid that range so they don't have to pay extra.

They have used my number as the calling number. They had used a friend's VoIP phone number and had to change his numbers. So blocking numbers will not work.

I don't answer the phone anymore. I believe when I signed up on the DoNot Call list they sold my number. Never trust the govt. They owe me $11,000 x 150 robo calls from 5 years ago. I saved the numbers and sent them in. Never trust the govt.

It's good that this clip pointed out who's falling for the scams. It's not just grandma and grandpa. I spend a few hours every year explaining different types of scams to elderly relatives or friends, but it never occurred to me that my gen z nieces might need the scam talk, too. What might seem like common sense to you might not be to someone you care about. And sometimes fear overrides common sense, which is what the scammers are counting on.
Amanda Kay (8 days ago)
What's worse is that I signed up for an app that's suppose to cancel robo calls and it signed me up for more.

I put the scan numbers in my phone book under DONT ANSWER or Scam 1-2-3 etc then I block em just in case they call back.. I’ve also had BSTRDS leave “we’ll involved local authorities of you don’t respond” crap calls .... 🤨 I’m old baby but I ain’t stupid ! 👏🤣🇺🇸👋
